And it’s not because I got lucky. It’s because I mastered one simple but powerful step most hairstylists rush through (or skip altogether): the initial client consultation.

Welcome back to the HairChairBoss Podcast!
In this episode, Angelina dives into one of the hardest lessons she learned the hard way: caring for clients without setting boundaries.

When she first started, Angelina thought saying “yes” to every request — early mornings, late nights, days off — would make her more accommodating and attract more clients. But over time, this flexibility turned into mismanaging her schedule, costing her time, money, and energy.

✨ Angelina shares her personal story, the real cost of over-accommodating, and her proven strategies for creating boundaries that support both your clients and your well-being.

💡 Key Takeaway:
Caring without boundaries isn’t sustainable. Setting clear limits isn’t selfish — it’s essential for protecting your business, your time, and your sanity.

Hairstylists tend to be on the giving end, not on the receiving side. If you’re in the service industry, giving so much of your time, creativity and energy to make your client feel good and look good, you are the “giving” type of person.

Knowing how to receive takes practice. In this episode, I give you tools on how you can be more on the receiving end so that you are open to receiving great clients and open to receiving great money, without feeling guilt or whatever else may pop up in your mind. In reality, that  just the act of receiving and being comfortable with receiving is going to help you get out of your own way. More at www.Hairchairboss.com

This topic comes from a question I received in the Hairchair Boss Facebook group. This stylist’s challenge and question is wanting to know how to protect their energy against downer clients, catty stylists and micro-managing salon owners.

I like this question because it’s something that a lot of hairstylists face in one way or another. This is a real issue that I know you have either faced or may encounter in the future and I want to be able to give you some tools that will help you navigate any of these situations.

And as a business and life coach to booth renter hairstylists, I hear about these challenges from my students and as a long time booth renter myself, I totally understand these situations because I’ve been in your shoes and I’ve had to deal with every single one these challenges myself.

Being that Hairchair Boss is all about the inside out approach, I’ll be sharing some insights that you probably haven't thought about before. These insights are going to help transform the way you approach your business, your clients, your co-renters, salon owners and life overall.

Because when you’re faced with downer clients, catty stylists and micro-managing salon owners, all of these skills are going to come in quite handy and make your life and business a lot easier and far more enjoyable. And you’ll feel empowered as a result!

Sometimes we just need proof and evidence that we are stronger and more powerful than we think we are.

If you're like me and so many hair stylists around the world, you have found yourself in an uncomfortable situation, whether it's a haircut that isn't quite coming out the way you or the client would like, or a color job that is taking an unexpected turn in a direction you don't want to go! Or maybe you’re engaging in a new client consultation and in the midst of it you realize that you and the client is just not a good fit and you don't know how to get out of the situation. These are all situations that could start a downward spiral if we let it.

It not only happens in the salon, it happens in other situations because life happens all around us. A phrase that has stuck with me for years is, the way you do one thing is the way you do everything. And this holds true for the positive things you do and the negative things you do.

Disempowering thoughts and words you often say or think to yourself and they will get in the way of you being the kick-butt problem solving, resourceful, capable and confident person you truly are. That's why it's so important to catch yourself as soon as possible.

One way to do that is to remind yourself daily. A great practice and habit to create is every morning you look in the mirror and declare all the wonderful characteristics about yourself. But here’s the catch, just saying it is not enough. You must imagine yourself BEING that person and DOING the action and HAVING the outcome you desire.

The more you step into being the person you need to be, you will spend far less time and energy in that disempowering place and you'll soon be able to respond with positive self-talk and inner guidance that will catapult you to the outcome you desire! I’m glad you’re here and I hope information from the episode helps you in a future stressful situation. Stay tuned!

Being in charge of everything means that only you can be held accountable and responsible for the outcome of your business. That being said, freedom in just about every area of your chair renter business is the golden ticket for so many hairstylists and it’s the #1 reason hair stylists, make-up artists, barbers and estheticians choose the independent route.

  • You have the freedom to set your prices and keep more of what you earn.
  • You choose client attraction marketing strategies that actually get clients in your chair.

As you can see, salon booth rental allows you to have tremendous freedom and flexibility in your business and in your life. And that’s the bottom line to remember, it’s a business. If putting on your entrepreneur hat sounds exciting to you and you are more motivated than ever to make it happen, you’re definitely going to want to take a peek at Hairchair Boss Bootcamp so that you have the opportunity to get the guidance you need to set yourself up for booth rental success.

There are a number of reasons a hairstylist might consider going from being a commission-based salon employee to becoming an independent hair stylist or barber and choosing to booth rent, also known as renting a salon chair.

The vision you may have of total freedom is intriguing and it’s most likely the number one reason for wanting to be a booth renter in the hair industry. But that freedom does come with a price. And before you venture out on your own with a business as an independent stylist, there’s a lot of intention, commitment and dedication that you’ll want to be stepping into before you take the exciting leap.

If you are currently booth renting or aspiring to and you don’t become the kind of entrepreneur you need to be in order to build your salon clientele plus know how to sustain it for the life of your business, your vision will remain a distant fantasy.

And there’s nothing good or bad, right or wrong in terms of your decision to booth rent or not,  it’s a matter of being confident with your decision, whatever it is. As with any career move you make, determining whether or not the new direction is a good fit for you, and vice versa, is one of the most important factors to consider.

As is with everything in life, there are pros and cons on both sides. Even for salon owners and managers, there are pros and cons to owning or managing a booth rental salon. This post is written for you as the current booth renter hairstylist or the aspiring one.

I share my personal experience with being a commission hairstylist, admittedly for a relatively short time, and my decision to take the salon booth/chair rental route that lasted nearly 30 years. I hope you find value in this episode. Stay tuned!

So many chair, booth and suite renter hairstylists are constantly facing the dilemma of what to charge for their services. I read a post in one of the hairstylists forums and it really got me thinking about this topic and the challenge of setting prices.

There’s pros and cons to being independent and ultimately, it’s up to you to be responsible for the income you want to be making and this is why knowing how to price your services is extremely important! Your take home pay and what you want your income to provide for you and your family is dependent on you and the business you create and maintain.

In this episode, you’re going to discover what self-worth means to you and how to use this knowledge and insight to catapult you to creating prices that you are confident in and attracting clients who are willing, and happy, to pay you what you're worth. Listen in!

I’ve seen something in our industry that I’ve never seen before and I think it’s a good thing. Many hairstylists have realized that they've been working their tush off way too much, not making enough money, not valuing their time and expertise, putting up with way too much BS from clients, co-workers or salon owners, and are ready to make some significant changes. I’m so glad that you’re realizing that YOU get to make changes.

Some hairstylists are considering getting out of the hair industry altogether. If you find yourself in any of the situations, or having thoughts about making a significant change, you’ll want to hear this episode because I have been in your shoes. Should I raise my prices? Should I move salons? Should I get out of the industry? Should I speak up? I’ve felt your anguish and I’ve survived it all! And you will too!

Stay tuned for some very candid, truthful and vulnerable insights I’ll be sharing with you in the hopes that my worn shoes will help you as you stand at that fork in the road trying to make the best decision you possibly can for YOU.

Indecision is one of the most frustrating places to be am I right? Sometimes I
would say outloud to myself, “Just make a decision already!”

What I’ve come to realize is that for most people, myself included, is that indecision is not the
inability to say “yes” or “no.” It’s more about wanting to make the “right” decision, one that you
feel confident about. The fear of making the “wrong” decision is what seems to be the biggest
obstacle. This dilemma leads to overthinking, which can cause unnecessary stress and then a
whole can of worms opens up! Not pretty.
But here’s the thing, you can quickly make a decision when you know how to bypass the habit
of overthinking. Overthinking can become a negative habit because it robs you of your courage.

There’s a simple phrase that I ask myself EVERY TIME I find myself at the decision fork in the road and 99.99% of the time my decision takes seconds to make. Plus, I feel complete
confidence because I have total clarity when I make my final decision.

Here’s the simple three word phrase that I use: CHOOSE YOUR REGRETS.
Yep, that’s it. And when you try that out a few times you’re most likely going to feel a sense of
clarity, confidence and freedom to live your life by your own design. That’s what being a
Hairchair Boss is all about

If you find yourself at this indecisive fork in the road, you’re going to find this episode extremely helpful. As you listen to this episode, you’ll feel empowered to choose the experiences you want to be a part of and the memories you want to look back on with a smile on your face and happiness in your heart! I reference a past episode (Episode 31), when talking about not living from circumstance. This is a good episode to reference when feeling like things just aren't going right. In my experience, whether it's my own personal experience or as a life and business coach to others, is that too many people, women especially, are afraid of being judged, criticized or talked about negatively. And they don’t want to come across as conceited, arrogant or boastful.

Here’s the reason why: There are so many great benefits to your overall well-being when you acknowledge and celebrate yourself for who you are and what you have accomplished. It’s time that you stop holding back when you want to step forward and shine your light and share that you just did something or achieved something that you’re proud of. Right now, in this moment, you can decide that you are going to be 100% okay with patting yourself on the back with a big ole smile on your face and gratitude in your heart for being the amazing person you are.

Did you know that something as simple as what you're thinking right now is either going to keep you from making more money in your business, or it's going to help you bring in more money. There is so much power in your thoughts and in the words that you speak out loud.

The solution is quite simple and there's good news and bad news to the way you go about it.  There's always two sides to a coin right?

I'll start with the bad news because it can only get better from there. When you think about and talk about things or situations that DON’T serve you, they have a tendency to keep you where you don't want to be. That's where your focus and attention are.

The good news is that when you think about and talk about things or situations that DO serve you, you can be propelled there because you are where your focus and attention is.

In this episode, I talk about the importance of letting go. Every hairdresser that I know did not have a money making 2020.

We can commiserate on how bad of a year it was, but that's not going to serve us at all. When you focus and put your attention on what you can and will DO differently, you will have a fruitful 2021, and you'll be on the positive side of that coin. You’ll want to hear this episode!

Today’s episode is such a treat because it gives us all an opportunity to be a part of something that will really make a difference, not only in our industry but for the planet.

If you're like me and thousands of beauty professionals you’re feeling torn about making people beautiful, but in that process, making the planet ugly. I often feel frustrated, guilty and sometimes overwhelmed with how much waste and pollution the beauty industry creates, and I’ve felt at a loss on what to do about it.

Then, I met Ben Hudgins of Novak Hair Studios. He has an 80+ chair salon and has figured out how to help his stylists create success for themselves, while making a big difference in the world we live in. His vision is to create an ethical brand and business model that would serve as a foundation for other beauty industry professionals who are committed to saving the earth.

The call that you're going to listen to was just supposed to be a meet and greet and set up for the actual podcast interview, but we instantly hit it off and our conversation was full of passion, excitement, encouragement and tons of tips. In the middle of it, I decided to make it the actual episode!

Ben shares some really great tips and resources on how to be more of a green salon. Even if you’re renting your space, you can make a difference! We also talked a lot about how to create a better chair renter business, so that you are more successful behind the chair and beyond. You’ll learn what it takes to make more money, increase your confidence, keep your sanity and much more!

I’m sure you’re going to enjoy this spontaneous interview, so stay tuned!

What I’ve come to realize (and you have probably realized this too) is that being successful in life is not just about being your own boss. In fact, there’s so much more to consider if you truly want to live your definition of success.

Creating long-lasting sustainable success is going to require you to take a bigger picture look at your life as a whole. It’s putting on your visionary hat and knowing the right steps to take now that will lead you to where you want to be in all areas of your life.

This is what I love to help you with! As you’ve noticed as you listen to my podcast episodes, my topics are not the typical marketing, social media and business building strategies.

I teach those in my courses because they’re essential. However, I’m more interested in first helping you be the kind of person who can look beyond your chair and see the bigger picture of everything you want to have and then step into being the person you need to be so that you get the outcome you desire.

I always felt that my perfectionism was like a badge of honor. That it was a good thing that I would not settle for anything less than my idea of perfection, because why in the heck would I want to do sub-par anything right?

If you’re nodding your head in agreement, I have news for you. Perfectionism doesn’t exist.

In fact, if you’re anything like me, you’ll soon find out that it’s the thing that will get in your way more than anything. There’s something underlying your perfectionism and it might come as a surprise to you as it did me.

Today’s episode is a totally impromptu episode because I was facing that fork in the road about something that I had to either go wit, in its imperfect way, or get stuck.

It inspired me to jump on my cell phone and hit record because I know that this one insight you’re going to hear about is the one thing that could free you from perfectionism and you’ll be ready to toss that badge out the window for good!

If you like the episode, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave a 5-star review. It helps me reach more motivated stylists like you! Thanks for listening.

There’s so much good stuff happening around you all the time.

I know it’s sometimes difficult to see, hear or feel the good things, especially when you have life stuff happening that doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t sound good and it doesn’t look good.

When you’re in a state where you can’t see, hear or feel the good in your life, you can end up in a bad mood or even worse, end up in a downward spiral that is so difficult to get out of.

I know this because I was once someone who would get into that downward spiral and I know how hard it is to stop that downward momentum. Then, I had one of those “aha” moments that shifted my perspective and I haven’t had that kind of downward spiral in years!

You might be wondering how the practice of gratitude will boost your business. When you know how to shift your energy, your focus and attention on what you're grateful for, you’ll feel more positive emotions so you’ll exude them, you’ll be able to deal with the struggles and adversity, and research shows that you’ll be healthier too.

When you’re being a more positive, resourceful and healthier person, you’ll be able to grow your business a lot easier. Plus, you’ll be more attractive to prospective clients because in general, people love to be around positive people.

In this episode, I’ll share two things that I do every single day that have also helped so many others shift from negativity to positivity, even in those moments where it seems nearly impossible to find the silver lining. Right now, in this moment, I’m grateful that you’re here, please stay tuned.

As you read the title of this episode you’re probably saying, “What?! Of course I need social media to get clients!!” I’m not saying don’t do social media. It’s good for some things. In fact, it’s great for a particular marketing strategy. But I’ll get to that in a bit.

However, if you’re like a ton of other hairstylists, you’re posting your tush off and still not getting enough new clients in your chair. I know this because I’ve been told this by way too many hairstylists. There are much better, more effective, efficient and profitable ways to get those great new clients through your salon door and into your chair.

It’s not rocket science, it’s not hard, yet so many stylists are not doing any of it. Which is why you're still struggling to have a full book. So if you’re ready for a breath of fresh air, stay tuned!

It happens to every single hairstylist, whether they admit it or not.

It sure has happened to me, more than once or twice, and given all the conversations I see happening in the different forums you and I belong to, it happens more times than we’d like but it’s inevitable.

What am I talking about? Messing up a clients hair!

Ugh! Right?

It’s such an icky feeling when you realize you messed up. Whether it’s the cut or the colour, or whatever service you gave, it’s not quite right.

And you start to sweat, you wonder if they noticed that their hair is messed up, you wonder if anyone else has noticed.

You’re trying to keep your composure but inside your saying Oh shiznit, what the heck am I going to do now?

And panic starts to set in.

If you’re like nearly every stylist out there, you’ve had some mess ups, and guess what, you lived!

In todays episode I’m going to share some of my memorable mess ups and how I recovered and not only recover but improved as a hairstylist and colourist.

And you can have a good laugh at my blunders so that you know you’re not alone and you’ll have some great takeaways on what you can do to recover, move on and be a better hairstylist as a result.

So stay tuned!

Captive Communication is an art and skill and some people are naturally good at it, or so it seems, because they’re able to turn on or turn up their charm. They also know how to be captivating and fascinating to their audience, their listener, their customers and clients.

For some of us, it takes a little bit of work. As with any skill, you can develop it and like art, you can create it to be a genuine and an authentic reflection of you.

In the salon setting, the ability to engage in captive communication is essential and something that I’ve found to be the “make or break,” in terms of a client coming back to you or not. When you know how to build rapport and are capable of keeping them engaged and captivated during their service and afterwards, they’ll feel different, in a good way. They’re going to remember how they felt more than what they got. And that is far more important than you may realize.

My 31 years behind the chair has shown me over and over again that a client is likely to return to your chair if they have a good rapport with you from the start. Of course, you have to do good hair! But being the “best” cutter or colourist isn’t the absolute criteria. I think you already know that, but did you know that being good at the art of communication will get you more clients than your hair artistry?

In today’s episode, I’ll be giving you exactly what to say so that you can start exercising your captive communication muscle. As you’re building your clientele, you’re going to want to know how to get more and more returning clients who look forward to being in your chair.

By now you’re probably wondering, what is captive communication? Listen to find out!

How often do you hear yourself say things like:

When I have more time I’ll…

When I have more money I’ll…

I can’t do this or that because of this person, that situation, the economy, that obstacle…

It’s easy to fall victim to circumstance and get in our own way. We all do it from time to time and the key is to catch yourself before you stall for too long and stop taking action.

If you’re like most people, you’re not even aware that you’re living by circumstance because it can be stealth like. So many people give into it that it seems totally acceptable to say, “Oh well, it just wasn’t the right time” or “it wasn’t meant to be.”

Perhaps in some situations that might be true.

But please don’t be so quick to give in to that way of thinking because most often it’s simply that you haven’t stepped into being who you need to be and THAT is the underlying truth to why you are not getting your desired outcome.

The good news is that you can totally shift your way of thinking and instead of giving in to

circumstance you can choose to be a person who is a problem solver, resourceful and resilient. When you do, you’ll discover that most everything in life is do-able. Because I know what it takes to be in this industry, I know that you’re so much smarter than you give yourself credit for.

In today’s episode you’re going to find out how to identify when you’re living from your circumstances and how to shift to being the person you need to be, so that you get more of what you want in life. Stay tuned...

Clients come and go. With most of them you are happy to have them in your chair and you wish they’d stay forever! And some do, and some don’t.

You have some clients you wish would go to someone else, and they might, but then sometimes they either come back or want to come back.

This is where a lot of hairstylists feel trapped and stuck with a client they don’t want in their chair. And I don’t have to tell you that is an uneasy energy sucking situation to be in.

I know this is a common dilemma because a lot of hairstylists have asked for advice on what to do and how to navigate this tough, potentially sticky situation of letting a client go.

If you’ve ever asked yourself “how do I let go of a client that I just don’t want to have anymore?” (for whatever reason), OR if you’ve felt totally drained by a client (even if they’re a nice person) and you wish they’d move on to someone else, then this episode is one that you’re going to want to give your full attention to.

And no, this is not bashing your client, it’s more about YOU taking control before you even get to the point you want out of the hair-relationship! So stay tuned...

019: A lot of times values get mixed up with morals, ethics and principles. Because of this misconception, many people give them a rating, like good or bad, or right or wrong, better or worse.

From my perspective, my interpretation and the way that I teach my courses on values is that values are part of your personal blueprint and they’re based on what’s important to you at a given time in your life.

Your values typically don’t change from one season to the next, or even year to year. They’re with you for a while until something significant occurs in your life and they either move and up down what I call the “values scale,” or go away completely, making room for new ones.

You might be saying, I thought values are morals, so what are they and how are they different?

In a moment I’ll give you examples of some values, so that you can start to identify yours.

First, I want to mention that there are several reasons you’re going to want to identify your personal values.

One good reason is that when you know what your values are it will be easier for you to be happier.

When you’re in alignment with your values, life is going pretty good, you’re in the flow, life is easier, and things come together for you.

When you’re feeling out of sorts, out of balance and just not quite right, it’s most often because you’re out of alignment with your values.

Your values become your guide, your personal inner compass that will help you get on, and stay on the path of who you want to be, and what you want to create in your business and your life.

But don’t take my word for it, stay tuned to today’s episode and you’ll start to discover how your values can shape your existence and your outcome.

It’s a normal part of life to experience occasional anxiety, it’s part of being human... welcome to “life school”.

But when you experience anxiety that is persistent, feels uncontrollable, excessive and overwhelming, it can be disabling. I know this because I am one of the nearly 20% of American’s who experience some level, and type, of anxiety.

If you’re like me, when anxiety hits it’s not only incredibly stressful, it’s incredibly frustrating.

And my journey from debilitating anxiety to where I am today has been eye opening and healing. I have far less experiences and “episodes” of panic attacks and it’s been a long time since I’ve been paralyzed for hours on end.

Which is why I wanted to do this episode; if there’s even just a little bit in my conversation with Dr. Melba Stetz that helps just one person, we will have made a difference.

According to ADAA, “anxiety disorders are real, serious medical conditions - just as real and serious as physical disorders such as heart disease or diabetes”.

And this episode is by no means a replacement for medical consultation, diagnosis or treatment. It’s simply a conversation I’m having with my practitioner who has been helping me understand my anxiety as well as sharing some suggestions and insights that might be of some help to others.

I had a couple of take-aways from today’s episode, the biggest one being this: I can change the way I interpret anxiety and call it worry instead.

Because when I use the word anxiety it feels like something outside of me, some trigger beyond my control and that feels disempowering.

However, the word “worry” is something that is happening within me. I am worried about this or that. Hmmm, I can manage my worry. I can manage my worried thoughts and shift them. This feels so much more do-able!

If you’re like me, you’ll have take-away’s too.

And thank you to the listeners who wrote in and asked questions that helped to guide today’s conversation.

Here’s a sneak peak at some of the discussion:

“I seem to have a lot of physical effects, particularly my back. What can be done to keep our bodies feeling better when dealing with stress and anxiety?”

“What are some effective strategies to come down from high anxiety at the end of the work day? Is there a way to neutralize it even if it's just a little bit?”

These questions, plus a few others, guided this conversation.

So if you experience a form of anxiety, I hope today’s episode will give you some sigh of relief, even to know that you’re not alone and that there are some simple, effective and pro-active things you can think about doing for yourself.

So stay tuned...

If you’re like nearly every hairstylist in business, the #1 goal is to be fully booked. No gaps, no waiting for walk-ins, no wondering what your bank account is going to look like.

Consistent and reliable income is something we all strive to have.

And as much as we all would like it to be, new clients just aren’t going to magically show up and sit in your chair, it takes something to get them there.

Sure walk-ins happen. But if you’re like most booth rental salons, or a salon suite owner, those walk-ins are few and far between. Certainly not enough to fill your book as quickly as you’d like.

Being a self-employed stylist, a successful one, requires you to implement marketing and business building strategies to consistently attract new clients and sustainably grow your business (and your bank account).

Because if you don’t, you’ll most likely be stuck in a lower income bracket than you really want to be in. And that would suck especially because you’re so good at what you do and could be making so much more money.

But for some reason, building a clientele takes some hairstylists WAY TOO LONG!

But here’s the thing...getting new clients doesn’t have to be a hard thing to accomplish. In fact, getting new clients is one of the easiest things you can do

One of the best, and fastest, ways to get new clients is to (drum roll please) simply ASK your current clients for a referral!

It really is that simple.

I know, you’re probably saying something like “I DO ask them for referrals and I’m still not getting any”.

OR…”I’m not comfortable asking my clients for referrals”.

And here’s what I know for sure: when you start asking your current clients for referrals you’ll start to feel more and more comfortable and it will become easier and easier to do.

In today’s episode I’ll be sharing tips and strategies you can use right away and you’ll soon realize how much your increasing your confidence and comfort level while asking for referrals.

You’re also going to find yourself having a nice full clientele and those empty gaps in your schedule are going to be a thing of the past.

This episode is Part 2 of The Hairstylist’s Self-Care Checklist, so if you missed part one, go back to episode 14 after you listen to today’s continuation.

As I mentioned in part one, you’re in the service industry and oftentimes, as with most service providers, you’re not so good at taking care of yourself right?

And if you’re like most of my listeners who are booth renters, you can’t just clock in and clock out because you have a lot of business stuff to take care of and that definitely cuts into the time you could be taking care of yourself.

And if you’re like so many busy people, you actually don’t even stop to think about taking care of yourself until the shiznit has hit the fan and you’re in some kind of pain, stress, overwhelm and fill in the blank right?

My husband is an airline pilot and my mind thinks in metaphors so I’ll use this example that you’ve heard a dozen times.

Put on your own oxygen mask before trying to help others with theirs. Even if that other person is your child or the person you love the most in this world.

And you know why that is, but I’ll remind you anyway...

When you’re stressed, overwhelmed, irritable, and all those ways you don’t want to be, you can’t be who you want to be for your family, clients, friends, heck even strangers will get on your nerves!

I always say that success, prosperity and abundance are created from the inside out, this is the foundation of Hairchair Boss. So when you think about it, self care is at the heart of your business, think of self care as the foundation for your life. It’s that important.

Because if you are not taking care of yourself first, you being the foundation and heart of your business, how can you expect to have consistent and reliable success, prosperity and abundance in your life?

And I wonder if you have fully considered what your life is going to be like if you continue to put yourself on the back burner.

Because the issue isn’t that you don’t have time, it’s that you’re not making time to make YOU a priority.

And you know what, you’re so worth taking care of and it’s time to do something about it.

So stay tuned.

Here in the US we have had protests across the country that have also sparked protests in cities around the world.

What’s going on in our country is something that many people like you have never experienced and I’m sad to say that this isn’t the first time that I’ve witnessed this kind of response to injustice towards Black people.

But I’m going to keep today's discussion on what we’re currently facing because this time I feel it’s different. Finally.

I feel that here in the US we’ve hit our point of no return. Meaning no returning to the way it used to be. Because we as a nation, as people living in this country, are at a critical point at which the accumulation of injustices towards Black people has become significant enough to cause a larger, more important change.

And a transformation is required if we want to be a nation that thrives because we truly can’t be a thriving nation if only a portion of us is afforded that opportunity. It’s time to live up to the terms “land of the free” and “home of the brave”.

And speaking of being brave, it takes bravery to be willing to be vulnerable, humble, and admit ignorance which means that I lack the knowledge and information that I need to be part of the bigger and deeper conversations that I want to participate in.

So if you’ve had questions about…

  • What the term “White Privilege” means.
  • Why saying All Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter can be a cause for argument.
  • How to deal with a client who’s in your chair who starts talking politics. (And we all remember what we’re told in cosmetology school right? Not to talk about religion or politics in the salon.)
  • What to do when you have someone in your chair who is making racist remarks, being disruptive, rude and inconsiderate of others.

Stay tuned because I've asked these tough question and will be sharing the answers with you.

You’re in the service industry which means that you are in the business of taking care of others, making sure their needs are met, doing your best to make their experience a good one. And as a hairstylist, 99.9% of the time you are a sounding board, an advice giver, a shoulder to cry on and the keeper of secrets.

And if you’re like most hairstylists, you’re ok with this, in fact, you thrive on being part of their support system, it’s like a badge of honor to be all this for your clients.

And what you do does in fact make a difference!

Your clients are making the time for their self-care which has a ripple effect in their lives and in the big picture of things, it helps to make the world a better place. Not just better looking, but better overall!

The problem that often arises is that you’re putting so much energy into caring for others that you’re not taking care of yourself. And if you have a family, a significant other, pets, or another side hustle, you’re most likely not taking any time for yourself right?

I always say that success, prosperity and abundance are created from the inside out, this is the foundation of Hairchair Boss. So when you think about it, self care is at the heart of your business.

Because if you are not taking care of yourself first, you being the foundation and heart of your business, how can you expect to have consistent and reliable success, prosperity and abundance in your life?

Self-care is something that a lot of hairstylists don’t think about for themselves even though it’s at the core of what you provide for others. And it’s time to recognize that not only do you deserve to have self-care in your life, it’s essential that you do.

And in today’s episode, I’ll be sharing my Hairstylist’s Self-Care Checklist with you AND giving you the link you need to get the pdf action sheet so that you have this checklist at your fingertips.

Stay tuned because it’s time to make yourself a priority.

We might be seeing the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, I hope so anyway.

There are a few states that are allowing salon doors to open up and if you’re like most hairstylists around the world, you have very mixed feelings and emotions about this.

In fact, you’ve had mixed feelings and emotions pretty much from the start and you have been through a roller coaster of ups and downs for the past two months... at least.

For weeks now there has been a divide between stylists on a few different topics.

For instance, those who feel that sending colour kits is a good idea, some who feel it isn’t. Some who feel they should help their clients figure out box colour, some who don’t.

And now that some states are allowing salon and barber shops to open, some stylists feel it’s too soon and don’t feel it’s safe just yet, and some who are ready, willing and able to get back behind the chair.

And here’s the thing, wherever you stand, no matter what side of the fence you’re on, your feelings are totally valid, 100%. And you know why? Because they are YOUR feelings.

What I mean when I say your feelings are valid is that they are justified based on your current thoughts, interpretations and perceptions.

And if you’re like most everyone on the planet, you don’t want to be told that you shouldn’t feel a certain way right?

Especially when you’re in the heat of the moment with your feelings and emotions, the last thing you want to be told is that you shouldn’t feel that way.

And to make matters worse, they now want to tell you how you should feel!

Oh boy, stand back when that happens right? And at this point, you are not in a mindset to hear anyone out and you will either react (and most likely not in the best way) or tune them out.

I’m spot on right?

By now you might be asking yourself why, or how is this relevant to me stepping back behind the chair?

Because it might be the right time to let go of a lot of those feelings and emotions you’ve been experiencing for the last two months because they simply may not be serving you any longer and they could very well be keeping you from stepping back into the salon being the best version of you.

And in today’s episode, I’ll be giving you some insight on why it’s a good idea to release some of those feelings and emotions that have been with you, and the easy way to make it happen.

Spoiler alert, this topic is not a business skill, it’s a life skill.

Stay tuned...

Being a booth renter has a lot of advantages and the bottom line is that most of the hairstylists who chose to booth rent are typically after one major thing: Freedom.

Freedom to be your own boss, to control your schedule, take the clients you want to have in your chair, set your prices, choose your product lines and ultimately the freedom to create the income you want.

Most booth renters are in shared spaces and when you are in a shared space of course you all want to get along great because it’s best for everyone from you the stylists, to your assistants and clients.

When there’s no drama, no competitiveness, and no cattiness, the energy and environment is so much better to be in. And when you help to create a supportive, cohesive environment everyone thrives.

I’ve seen first-hand the difference that it makes when stylists either work together to create a space that everyone loves to be in and when they don’t.

In fact, the salons that had stylists who were not cohesively honoring or engaging in some sort of booth rental etiquette, had super high turnover rates with their renters and their clients. And although everyone in your shop is rental, it is still in your best interest, in everyone’s best interest to be a team player.

And what if I told you that when you are a team player and have booth renter etiquette you could make more money?

Here’s a peek into The Hairchair Boss Booth Renter Etiquette Guide:

1-    BE a good neighbor

2-    Help your clients be good neighbors

3-    Contribute to creating a positive salon image

4-    Be a good host

5-    Be a team player

In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about these spoken and unspoken booth rental etiquette tips that will help you step into being a better team player, a sought-out stylist and a darn pleasure to work alongside.

Don’t you just love a good before and after story? They are so inspiring.

Before and after weight loss, the person doesn't even look the same and the smile on their face makes you want to give them a great big hug. Before and after makeovers and how their features just pop and you can see their aura brighten up. Before and after financial wreckage...crumbled marriage...home remodel...from living on the streets to a job and a home and a family (that one ALWAYS makes me cry!).

Before and after scenarios are uplifting, inspiring and encouraging because they help make you feel like if they can do it, I can do it too.

Right now, we are still in the midst of the coronavirus and if you’re like most hairstylists across the nation and in most countries around the world, you have not been able to work in the salon.

You’re going on a couple of months of forced down time and there is a lot of financial stress you’re facing, and the unknowns and chaos are making it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I get that and I hear you.

And at the same time, I would be doing you a great disservice if I didn’t interject and help you see yourself from another perspective.

And this outside perspective is that there ARE opportunities to find the silver lining and I believe it is in the form of your own before and after.

After talking with a heck of a lot of hairstylists, I see a few patterns developing and I’m hearing a lot of comments and conversations around aha moments, realizations and doses of boldness, excitement and courage.

And it made me realize that now is a great time to re-evaluate the way you have been showing up for yourself, your clients, your family, friends, and in life overall.

In today's episode I’m going to talk about your inspiring, uplifting and courageous before and after that awaits you.

All you have to do is be open, willing and ready to create your own version.

Because of the Coronavirus, it’s  likely that your salon is closed up and your income has halted for the time being.

And the reality is that you still have expenses and bills to pay and your thoughts are consumed with what you don’t have or the money you’re not making right now instead of being mindful of what you do have.

And that’s totally understandable. It’s very difficult to think about what you do have when it feels like so much of what you have, or had, is diminishing and disappearing before your very eyes.

But now is a really good time to put your attention on the abundance you do have so that you continue to attract abundance in your life.

Having an abundance mindset will serve you well because when you put your attention on what you do have, your attitude greatly improves, your optimism level substantially increases and your overall outlook on your business and your life as a whole will catapult you to even more abundance.

In today’s Hairchair Boss episode, I’ll share two mindsets that are going around, scarcity and abundance, and you’ll have an opportunity to identify which one you’re currently in and explore areas of abundance in your life so that you can put yourself in a mindset that will serve you now and in the months and years to come.

Don’t take my word for it, listen in, keep an open mind, and consider what you can attract when you’re open to it.

During this time where we're faced with the current Corona Virus, a lot of hairstylists around the world are asking questions and expressing concerns such as...

my clients are cancelling what do I do? Should I cancel clients... how will I pay my rent... take care of my family... what kind of risk am I putting myself and my family in... what am I going to do if I get infected... and so many more questions that don’t have great answers.

And I get it, as a chair renter you have so many financial and business responsibilities and this is all overwhelming and stressful.  All of a sudden you’re being required to juggle so many things at once and the loss of income is big and it’s real.

Today I’d like to share a perspective with you that I know may be difficult to find in times like this. And the reason I want to share this is because shifting your perspective in a few areas might prove to be a very healthy thing to do right now because shifting your perspective may be the thing that gets you through a crisis like the one you’re facing today.

And once you know how to make these shifts, you will be equipped to handle any unsettling and challenging situation you may face in the future, no matter what it is.

007: How To Attract The Clients You Want To Have In Your Chair

Imagine this: you have a booth rental business, or aspiring to go rental, and you have a full clientele and they are people you love to have in your chair, you look forward to seeing them every few weeks, you enjoy the conversations you’re having, you truly like spending time with them because it doesn’t feel like a job, it feels like you’re hanging out with friends, and at the end of your busy day you’re tired but you don’t feel drained, in fact you reflect on your day and grateful for the clients you have, because, as Marie Kondo would say, they spark joy!

The plan is to have these clients in your chair for years to come because when you can create great relationships with your clients they will become raving fans and loyal customers.

If you’re not there yet, don’t worry, you can get there and because you’re here listening today, you’re going to be well equipped to get there faster and easier.

I first want to bring your attention to the mistake I see many hairstylists make when it comes to attracting, building and maintaining your clientele.

The mistake is taking anyone who will sit in your chair. At just about any cost.

You’re often told that you need to sit around and wait for walk-ins and take anyone who will come in. You’re also told that even if a client is difficult or challenging, that you just gotta deal with them because it’s money in your pocket. So if you want to build, you just have to suck it up buttercup, get thicker skin and do your best.

I’m here to tell you that’s terrible advice. And if you’re telling yourself this is what you have to do in order to build your clientele, you can stop giving yourself terrible advice too.

In today's Hairchair Boss episode, I’ll be sharing five key areas you want to be super clear about so that you attract, build and retain clients that you’re going to love having in your chair every time.

The foundation of Hairchair Boss is to help you, the booth rental hairstylist, create a successful and thriving business and an abundant life by taking an inside out approach.

An inside out approach means not living from circumstance. It means not relying on your outer world to get what you want, like relying on your social media, your networking or your clients.

An inside out approach means starting from who you are from the inside, because who you are BEING at your core is going to determine what you do or don’t do, and eventually what you have, or don’t have.

Think about it this way, what are you trying to have right now? Is it to have more clients, to have more popularity and social media following, to have more money, to have more organization, to have more confidence or more efficiency in your services?

If you don’t have the things you hoped or thought you’d have by now, or if you’ve hit your goals and have new ones to reach and not sure how to get there, you are most likely going about it backwards. It’s not your fault, because there aren’t many people talking about this model and way of thinking.

And this way of thinking that I invite you to consider is the Be Do Have model.

The premise of this way of thinking is that you first have to BE it before you can Have it.

It’s not a fake it til you make it model, the "BE. DO. HAVE." approach is a lot more effective than that.

And when you take this approach and live this BE. DO. HAVE. way of thinking you will begin to change the way you show up in your business and in your life overall, because you’ll start showing up in a way that empowers you, that helps set you up to have everything you want.

In today’s episode, I’ll be uncovering the backwards thinking that so many hairstylists (and most people in general)have...and today you’re going to be ahead of the curve.

In this episode, I answer a question that someone in the Hairchair Boss Facebook group asked, which is: “How do I enforce my cancellation policy?”

This is a great question because it’s never easy to have that discussion with your guest who is habitually late, cancels at the last minute, or no shows on you.

Even though it's totally on them, if you're like most hair stylists you hate having that conversation, so more often than not, you let them slide again (and again) because you like them or because you feel like you need the business.

And there is an underlying fear that they will get mad at you, so you don’t enforce it and you tell them it’s ok when you know it’s not. And I know you just wish you would never be put in that situation. But unfortunately, it is your reality and if you don’t know how to create and enforce your cancellation policy, you’re going to end up with way more last minute empty spaces in your book than you can afford.

You may not be aware of it but the reason why you'll avoid this conversation is because it feels confrontational and most people don't like confrontation.

It doesn't look confrontational on the outside but it feels like it on the inside, and this feeling is insidious in the way it robs you of your power and in today's episode we're going to take an inside-out approach to your cancellation policy so that you confidently take your power back.

There is a big misconception too many hairstylists believe and it's that creating success and building a full clientele is going to come from social media and getting better at your artistry and waiting for walk-ins and referrals to stroll in the door and sit in your chair.

And success, the sustainable kind, isn't going to come from you being a superstar behind the chair.

Real, sustainable and life-long success is going to come from YOU being confident, savvy, courageous and successful from the inside out.

In this very first episode of Hairchair Boss, you're going to get a glimpse as to who Angelina is, why she started this podcast as well as Hairchair Boss Bootcamp, and what she boldly shares about what it really takes to thrive in this wonderful world of hair.
