Confidence is a key requirement for military personnel. Whether they be taking part in humanitarian aid missions, peacekeeping operations, providing assistance to the civil community or evacuating non-combatants from areas of conflict, soldiers need to provide reassurance, leadership and moral support. This can only be achieved if they are confident in their equipment, training and capabilities. In this interview, a female officer discusses with her first commanding officer how her military career carved the way ahead for her role in the very male dominated and dangerous environment of the private security industry in war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. She recalls an incident in 1995 during the war in the former Yugoslavia when as an inexperienced junior officer she thrown into a complex multinational, all arms refugee operation at Tuzla airfield following the massacre at Srebrenica. Her self-confidence saved the day.
