Missing in the Carolinas
More than 600,000 people go missing each year in the United States. Luckily, many missing adults and children are quickly found. But tens of thousands of people remain missing for more than one year, eventually becoming cold cases. This podcast highlights just a few of the missing people in North and South Carolina, and is written and produced by Renee Roberson.
The Missing in America Project helps provide the remains of veterans with honorable burials, but it takes a team of volunteers to do so. We share some of the recent stories from the nonprofit. In 1980, Jeffrey Mays and Ted Wall set out on Jeffrey's boat off the coast of Cape Hatteras. No trace of the men or the boat was ever found, but Jeffrey's family believes he could still be alive. Another Concord, N.C. man disappeared off the coast of North Carolina while on a fishing trip. What happened to Bill Hollingsworth? Despite their best attempts, police could not figure out who would have wanted to murder her. In 2008, 52-year-old Bonnie Lou Irvine went missing in Cornelius, N.C., and police soon learned she had arranged to meet a man she met on Craigslist before she disappeared. In 2020, 39-year-old Andy Banks set out for an appointment to sell his Range Rover, and quickly dropped out of sight. In 1992, 23-year-old Michael Hunter was found deceased in his northwest Raleigh apartment. When police take a closer look, they realize a lethal injection of Lidocaine caused his death, and his roommate, medical student Joseph Mannino, admits to injecting him with antihistamines to ease migraine symptoms. But the investigation reveals a motive for murder within a contentious love triangle. Brian "Neil" Hooks went missing from Florence, S.C. in 1988 and his family is still hoping for answers. Andy Tench disappeared from Belmont, N.C. in late March of 2024 and while his car has been found, there is still no sign of him. Charlotte, N.C. resident Mary Collins was brutally murdered by two people she called friends in March 2020 and one of the accused is still out on bond. Four-year-old Jeremy Grice went missing from his home in South Carolina in 1984 and his family believes it was a non-custodial kidnapping. Crystal Faye Todd was murdered in Conway, S.C. in 1991, and when DNA evidence pointed out that her killer was someone she trusted, her community was stunned. Ann Fox Smith was a beloved middle school teacher who was killed in her home in 2008, and her killer remains at large.
Fresh out of medical residency, Dr. Benjamin Gilmer joined a rural North Carolina clinic only to find that its previous doctor shared his last name. Dr. Vince Gilmer was loved and respected by the community—right up until he strangled his ailing father and then returned to the clinic for a regular week of work. Vince’s eventual arrest for murder shocked his patients. How could their beloved doctor be capable of such violence? He was later found deceased in the woods after a tragic accident, leaving many to wonder what he was hoping to escape. On Feb. 3 of this year, a 12-year-old boy who had arrived at the program only 24 hours before was found dead early in the morning. His cause of death is still being investigated, and the school has been ordered to temporarily shut down. Charlotte native Mary Shotwell Little mysteriously vanished from the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta, Georgia on Oct. 14, 1965. A city-wide search turned up no leads, but gas station receipts showed she may have been in Charlotte and Raleigh in the hours after she went missing. Eighteen months later, a young woman named Diane Shields was found murdered in Atlanta, and her ties to Mary led investigators to believe the two cases might be related.

In 2003, a young woman named Scarlett Wood from Wilmington, N.C. went missing. While her remains were discovered a year later, investigators soon realized her death was also tied to a series of murders committed by a long-haul trucker with victims in at least two other states.
In September 2018, 42-year-old Dean Hair sent a text message to his mom that he was taking a job cleaning and painting apartments in Greensboro, N.C. That was the last time his family heard from him, and when his parents went to visit him at his apartment in Raleigh in October 2018, they discovered no one had seen him for weeks. At the time he went missing, Dean didn't have a phone, and his belongings and car were left behind at the apartment complex. His family is still searching for answers and hopes that someone can give them a definitive answer on whether or not Dean is okay.

4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered in the United States each year. Approximately 1,000 of those bodies remain unidentified after one year. Thanks to advances in genetic genealogy, more and more of these unidentified people, often the victims of homicide, are getting their names back. Author bios: Charlie Ryan and Pamela Martin Ovens previously collaborated on The Pullman Hilton, A Christmas Mystery and My Life with Charles Fraser, chronicling the recollections of the men and women who worked for and knew Fraser, the iconic founder of Sea Pines Plantation.
Charlie Ryan was, over a span of eighteen years, a radio and television news director and anchor, Associated Press state broadcast editor and newspaper columnist. He reportorial years were spent in West Virginia and St. Louis. In his journalism career he focused on politics and interviewed notables including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Eleanor Roosevelt and Robert Kennedy. He is a recipient of numerous honors and a member of the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
Following his broadcast career, Charlie founded and grew four media firms in West Virginia, Virginia and Washington, DC. After 35 years he sold the firms and became the founding dean of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Charleston in Charleston, WV.
Charlie and his wife Becky moved to Hilton Head where he served three years on the board of directors of the Sea Pines Plantation Community Services Association as chairman and the Association of Property Owners. They now reside in Charlotte, NC.
Charlie has also written Dead Men’s Clubs and Alacrity, his memoir.
Pamela Martin Ovens has lived on Hilton Head Island for almost 40 years. She and her husband, legendary boat captain Peter Ovens, are widely known for their charter sailboat business of 16 years, hosting hundreds of tourists on the 62-foot yacht Schooner Welcome. Pamela is the chief executive and owner of Single Star Publishers. She was a radio and television professional in Cincinnati prior to her move to Hilton Head Island and hosted an island radio show on WHHR. Today she is an accomplished “voice over artist” for radio and television commercials.
