Coach Thomas Alward is one of the four cornerstones of Goodrich Athletics as he has been coaching at Goodrich for over 33 years. Not many programs still have a coach who has dedicated so much of his time and energy for so long but Coach Alward does it because he loves the kids. Coach Alward has been coaching for a total of 49 years, with his coaching career started at Flint Central becoming their Head JV coach then at his alma mater Burton Bendle. Coach Alward has not only been dedicated to Goodrich for almost 33 years, but he was a dedicated sales rep for Jostens for 35 years. Coach Alward is married to his high school sweetheart Darlene, they have two children Trevor and Jennifer. In Coach Alwards free time he enjoys watching the Detroit Tigers, golf, and of course spending time with his 6 grandchildren (Collin, Emma, Luke, Delaney, Neely, and Grady). A little something interesting about Coach Alward is he is a graduate of The University of Nebraska where he played on a National Championship team. Coach Alward was also drafted in the National Football League (NFL) to the NY Jets. He later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Alward was the first player to ever sign a NFL Contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Daily Discipline
Today is the most important day of your life.
December 11, 2023
Imagination is powerful. It colors the mind with vivid inventions, curious scenarios, and possibility beyond reality.
Imagination has no limits, no barriers, no inherent constraints. It has endless horsepower without a built-in governor. It entertains the impossible as if it were possible in one moment and the possible as if it were impossible in the next.
So, when imagination fuels your dreams, creativity, and problem-solving, it is an unrivaled asset.
But when imagination fuels your fears, doubts, and insecurities, it is an unrelenting liability.
It seamlessly switches between these two modes. You’ll imagine a crucial conversation going well and resolving a troubling issue, only to wonder what a particular facial expression meant and develop a discreet anxiety about all the negative things it could mean.
Imagination will lift you above the clouds, then drown you in the bottom of the deepest ocean. It is the light and the dark.
Discipline is the muscle that encourages your imagination to lift you into the light and restrains your imagination when it’s drowning you in the dark.
The time is now. Do the work.

Coach Moffitt is one of the nation’s premier strength and conditioning coaches. The teams he coached were among the most dominant and talented in college sports history.
In a career spanning 34 years, Moffitt has been the recipient of five National Coach of the Year awards. His teams have also been part of:
For 26 consecutive years, all of Moffitt’s teams—between LSU, Tennessee, and Miami—made it to a bowl game. This is a feat that may never be duplicated.
From 2000 to 2021, Moffitt was a fixture of the LSU campus. He is currently the only strength coach in the U.S. to win three national championships under three different head coaches. At LSU, Moffitt coached some of the most dominant teams in college football. This includes the 2019 national champions, who many consider the greatest college football team of all time. During his tenure, he received five National Coach of the Year awards.
Many interns, graduate assistants, and staff members who worked under Moffitt went on to receive opportunities across the nation. Currently, 64 former staff members work as strength and conditioning coaches at all levels of athletics.
Moffitt began his coaching career at John Curtis Christian School in New Orleans, LA. While at John Curtis, he coached football, wrestling, track & field, and weightlifting. During his six seasons from 1988-1993, the football team compiled an 84-4 record with three state champions to their credit. Moffitt’s weightlifting team became state champs on three occasions. He was also recognized as National High School Coach of the Year. This award came from the Professional Football Strength Coaches Association in 1992.
Moffitt served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Miami University for two years. There, he helped Head Coach Butch Davis rebuild the Hurricane program. While in Miami, Moffitt was named 1998 Big East Strength Coach of the Year. He also served as associate head strength and conditioning coach at University of Tennessee from 1994 through 1997. While at Tennessee, Moffitt was responsible for coaching the football and track & field teams. During his tenure there, both teams competed for, and won, an SEC Championship.
A 1986 graduate of Tennessee Tech, Moffitt gained initial experience as a member of the Tech football team. There, he saw success as a two-year letterman on the offensive line. Moffitt earned his degree in education in 1986. He spent a season coaching in the weight room and helping with the offensive line.
Born in Springfield, Tennessee, Moffitt is married to the former Jill Beron of River Ridge, LA. They have three children: Clay, a former LSU pitcher; Aaron, a former LSU tight end and member of the 2019 national championship football team; and Brady, a senior at Catholic High School.

A little bit about Greg White:
I am excited to be in Elkins, working in a great community with this fantastic radio station. I started in radio in 1983, as a high school kid. I have been part-time, and full-time, in radio since that year. I’ve worked in Beckley, Mount Hope, Oak Hill, and Charleston. There’s really nothing in radio I haven’t done. As much as I enjoy playing music, my absolute favorite thing in radio is Play by Play. I’ve been doing High School and College football and basketball play by play since 1990. As part of a team in Charleston, we won the “Best Play by Play Broadcast” award 6 years in a row… and I won the individual “Best Play By Play Announcer” a few years ago. I’ve done high school sports in Beckley, Shady Spring, Charleston, and most recently, Tygarts Valley. For two years, I was the play by play guy for WV State University, and am part of the MetroNews Sports Team for the annual Mountain East Conference Basketball Tournament.
I am also honored to be a Retired Senior Master Sergeant from the US Air Force, with nearly 28 years of service. I served part time for a few years and ended my career an active duty capacity with the WV Air National Guard. I was fortunate to maintain my part-time radio career during my military service, and am proud to have served this state and country.
I have been married to my amazing wife, Diana, since 2019. We are die-hard WVU Mountaineer football and basketball fans, and I’ve been a fan of the New England Patriots since 1975. So you’ll find us watching sports in the fall and winter… and spending our summers out by the firepit.
I’ve lived most of my life in Fayette County, but moved to this area about a year ago… and am loving every minute of it. It’s beautiful here and the people are some of the nicest I’ve ever met. I will be here every weekday morning from 6am until 10am… and will even visit with you on the weekends… playing Elkins Greatest Hits on 94.7 WELK.

BUCKHANNON, West Virginia – West Virginia Wesleyan College’s new director of career services and experiential learning discovered his own passion in helping students navigate their next steps.
Dr. Justin Bowers recently came to the College from Upshur County Schools.
“For a long time, I have wanted to connect to higher education,” he said. “I was teaching at the high school last year. I loved the opportunity to teach, but really got passionate about helping upperclassmen think about next steps – whether that was higher education, employment or enlisting in the military – that was the most fun I had.
“When I saw the position of director of career services and experiential learning was open, I felt like it was a great fit. Being a community member, I have floated around the outskirts of West Virginia Wesleyan College, but to be a part of this community in this role is really, really exciting to me.”
The Office of Career Services and Experiential Learning has also moved. Students will find Bowers on the second floor of the Benedum Campus Center in the Student Development suite when they return in August.
“My primary roles are going to be networking to make sure we have strong internships and experiential learning opportunities for students,” Bowers said. “I will also be developing career services to help students with building effective resumes and cover letters, interview skills, finding the right job or grad school after college.”
Bowers views his office as a campus resource center for students as they look at their next professional steps.
“Everybody comes to college thinking about what they are excited to learn, what they are passionate about, what career they want to pursue,” he said. “I think having a resource with very practical steps they can take to move toward their goals is very helpful.”
Bowers grew up in Buckhannon and moved back in 2012. He earned a Ph.D. in organizational leadership and has spent the last 10 years pastoring a church locally and working in the school system while building a business for leadership developing and coaching and consulting. He and his wife, Carrie, have four daughters.

M.O.D.O.
M.O.D.O. is a non profit I started back in 2019 that is dedicated to providing youth opportunities they normally would not get. A big part of M.O.D.O. is the weekly dinners I do with my players. We put on our shirts and ties and go to dinner at one of the nicer restaurants in town. M.O.D.O. is not limited to that as we have events such as our 2020 trip to see Broadways Hamilton. As well as College Campus Tours. Ultimate goal of having a Community Center and Indoor Athletic facility available for the community.

Here is Josh's bio from WCHS:
Hi there!! I cannot tell you how happy I am to be here at WCHS/WVAH! To cover sports for a living has to be one of the greatest jobs in the world. Like every other kid growing up, I wanted to be a pro football or baseball player. You know, the next Bo Jackson. But I soon found out I wasn't big enough, strong enough or fast enough. You don't have to be Mel Kiper, Jr. to figure out that's not your meal-ticket. So what's the next best thing? Without question-- what I do now.
I love West Virginia and now consider it my home, but I am not a native of the Mountain State. The frozen tundra known as Minnesota is where I am from. Prior to moving to West Virginia, I worked in Minneapolis as a production assistant at WCCO TV. I am a big Vikings fan, as well as every other Minnesota sports team, and part of my duties included covering Vikings practices. The first person I'd ever met from West Virginia was the Valley's very own, Randy Moss.
I came to West Virginia in the fall of 2000. My first on-air TV job came at WVVA TV in Bluefield where I served as the Sports Director for two years. The primary objective at WVVA in Southern West Virginia is the same as the number goal here at TV 8 in Charleston-- LOCAL SPORTS. It's hard to pick a favorite time of the year. March is great-- I love tournament time.. but fall is also a wonderful time of the year with the high school football and college football seasons starting.
What I also love about my job is all the great people I get to meet. I am truly blessed to have been introduced to some of the folks in this state the past few years. I also love getting feedback, so drop me a line atjolewis@sbgtv.com if there's something on your mind!! Take Care!
My name is Andy McPherson. I am from Hurricane,WV. I am 36 years old and have been officiating football for half of my life. This is will be my 18th season. Officiating football is something I grew up around. My Dad is entering his 40th year. Being on the same crew with my Dad allows us share in something and have a great time doing it.
Mark Martin has served as sports director for both WCHS-TV and WVAH-TV in Charleston/Huntington since 2000. The Fairplain resident has been a broadcaster of games telecast on ESPN, has won an EMMY, was named Sportscaster of the Year in West Virginia in 2002 and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Associated Press in 2009.
Coach McFarlin is entering his 9th season as the head football coach at Blessed Trinity and his 38th year of coaching high school football in Georgia. He holds an 18 year head coaching record of 172 - 52 - 2 and is 90 - 18 - 1 in his eight years at BT. While at Blessed Trinity, Coach McFarlin’s teams have won 5 Region Championships, 3 Region Runner-Ups and have played for the State Championship three of the last four years. In 2015 the Titans played for the State Title where they came up short in an overtime loss to Westminster. Blessed Trinity claimed the 2017 title by defeating rival Marist, and then returned to the championship game this past year to defeat Cartersville giving the Titans their first “Back to Back” State Football titles. It marked the eighth consecutive year for BT to finish their GHSA season ranked in the Top 10. BT finished the 2018 campaign ranked #1 in AAAA, #3 in all classifications in Georgia and #61 overall in the nation. Coach McFarlin was selected the GACA and AJC AAAA Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and named the 2018 National Catholic Coach of the Year by Global Football and Catholic Athletes for Christ. Coach McFarlin and his wife, Kay have been married for 36 years. They have two children. Their daughter, Courtney Lott, and her husband, Jim, have one son, Taylor. And, their son, Will McFarlin, is the Assistant Men and Women’s Golf Coach at the University of North Georgia. The McFarlins consider Blessed Trinity their second home and look very forward to the 2019 season.

Coach Jeff Herron is a highly decorated head coach with a 312-54 record, winning five state championships and the only Georgia prep coach to win state championships with three different schools. Martin is a special teams coach at Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he works with place-kickers, punters, and kick-off specialists. He's also the author of the forthcoming book, 30 Days with America's High School Coaches.
Through interviews with coaches across the nation in a dozen high-school varsity sports, this book peels back the many ways that coaches shape the characters, work ethics, and morals of the young men and women they’re charged to work with in five key areas:
1) How coaches relate to their players.
2) How coaches approach their craft.
3) How coaches build programs.
4) How coaches improve themselves.
5) How coaches affect their communities.
Learn more about the book and when it will be available for purchase here.
An excerpt of the book is running July 27 in Read the Spirit magazine. Read all my writing for RTS at www.readthespirit.com.
