Join Pastor Stuart for the second sermon in the series, One of Us.

Today, we look at Galatians 4:4-5 to hear a message . . . "Born Under the Law".

In this message, we are encouraged by the fact that Jesus, the Son of God, was born under the law for us.

Being under the law, at the very least, includes the idea that we must meet the demand or face the penalty.

Jesus met all the demands of God's law.

Those who trust in Jesus are freed from the law as law and adopted into God's family.

So let's praise God for the gift of Jesus with our lips and with our lives.

Today, we look at John 1:1-14 to hear a message . . . "The Mystery of the Incarnation".

In this message, we are encouraged to see the incarnation as a deeply profound and unfathomable mystery.

At the same time, we need to understand that the incarnation is foundational to knowing God and experiencing salvation.

The appropriate response to the mystery of the incarnation is awestruck worship.

So let’s earnestly ponder the reality of Jesus, God in the flesh, that we would worship and adore him.

  • We also want to make sure we have a good conscience when we give a reason for our hope.

Join Pastor Stuart for the sixth lesson in our series, Head Full of Doubt, where we seek to answer the question, "What do we do with doubt?"

Today, we turn to Psalm 22 to find the psalmist . . . "Asking God 'Why?'".

In this lesson, we learn:

  • Asking God “Why?” is not necessarily doubt or sin.
    • The “why” of suspicion questions God’s character or wisdom.
    • The “why” of curiosity desires to learn.
    • The “why” of bewildered belief trusts God but admits confusion and ignorance.
    • The “why” of anguish expresses our pain and agony to God.
  • The type of “why” we ask demonstrates what’s going on in our heart.
  • No matter what type of “why” is in our heart, it is good for us to bring our questions to God.
  • Working through our questions with God helps lead us from why to worship.
  • We can do all this boldly because of Jesus.
  • So, whatever “whys” we’re wrestling with, let’s take them to our heavenly Father through Jesus.

  • Unbelief is what keeps people from God’s rest.
  • God’s promise of rest is fulfilled only in Jesus.
  • Therefore, we can and should take our unbelief to Jesus.
  • So, by the work of the Spirit, let’s rely on Jesus to change our unbelief to belief.

  • We need to beware of an unbelieving, hard heart caused by the deceitfulness of sin.
  • Three ways we can guard against unbelief and hardness of heart:

    • Focus on Jesus.
    • Hold fast to our confession of Christ.
    • Exhort each other daily to stick with Jesus.

In this lesson, we learn:

  • Part of the mission of Jesus is to restore people to their God-given destiny.
  • The Son of God assumed human nature to fulfill our destiny so he could restore us to that destiny.
  • Jesus not only restores fallen sinners; he calls us “family.”
  • Knowing our identity and our future destiny in Christ affects the way we live today.
  • Therefore, you can live in light of your destiny in Christ.

In our second lesson, we examine Hebrews 1:1-2:4 as we learn about . . . "The Problem of Drift".

In this lesson, we learn:

  • Give close attention to the message of Jesus lest you drift away.
  • If messages given by angels should be heeded, how much more should we heed the message of the Lord Jesus.
  • There are several reasons why we may drift:

    • Deception.
    • Doubt.
    • Discouragement.
    • Distraction.
    • Disengagement.
    • Therefore, no matter what you’re facing in life, keep going back to the good news of Jesus.

In our first lesson, we turn to Hebrews 1:1-4 as we learn about . . . "The Culmination of Revelation".

In this lesson, we see:

  • Jesus is the culmination of God’s revelation to us.
  • If the truth from God through the prophets is important, how much more vital is the truth found in God’s Son.
  • The Son of God is the apex of God’s revelation because he is:

    • The Creator of all things.
    • The Sustainer of all things.
    • The heir of all things.
    • The radiance of God the Father’s glory.
    • The exact imprint of his nature.
    • The great High Priest.
    • The Lord of all.

Join Pastor Stuart for the last part in our series, Dark Side of the Mind, a sermon series on dealing with the "dark emotions" (anger, anxiety, depression, envy, guilt, and shame).

In this seventh lesson, we turn to various passages in the Old and New Testament as we here an encouragement on . . . "Minding Our Shame".

In this lesson, we see:

  • In one way or another, shame affects everyone.
  • Shame affects our subjective identity.
  • When we feel shame, we tend to hide and cover-up.
  • We also tend to either shift the blame or take the blame inappropriately.
  • Ultimately, the remedy for shame is Jesus.
  • Therefore, you can:
    • Single out your shame.
    • Huddle.
    • Admit your need.
    • Meditate on the good news of Jesus.
    • Embrace Jesus and all he has for you.

In our fifth lesson, we turn to various passages in the Old and New Testament as we here an exhortation on . . . "Minding Our Envy".

In this lesson, we see:

  • To deal with envy well, it’s helpful to understand a few things:
    1. While often conflated, envy and jealousy are technically not the same.
    2. There is a good bit of complexity with both envy and jealousy.
    3. Envy is often subtle and hidden.
    4. Envy drains joy.
    5. The love of Christ for us is the cure for the sin of envy.
  • Therefore, we ought to:
    • Grant that you may be envious.
    • Refuse to allow envy to grow.
    • Aim for God’s glory and relational peace.
    • Speak truth to yourself.
    • Pray for those you envy.

In this fourth lesson, we turn to Psalms 42 & 43 as we here an encouragement to walk faithfully after God even in the midst of . . . "Our Grief & Depression".

In this lesson, we see:

  • Grief, in general, and depression specifically are not sin in and of themselves.
  • How we handle grief and depression and what’s underneath our grief and depression may be sin.
  • We may not be able to completely control how we feel when we’re depressed, but we can address our thinking and actions.
  • Jesus is the ultimate hope for depressed people.
  • Therefore, you can:
    1. Set realistic goals.
    2. Allow yourself to feel sadness.
    3. Don’t isolate.
    4. Note the how’s and the why’s.

In this lesson, we see:

  • Anxiety is often driven by desires for security, control, and certainty.
  • While these desires are not sinful in and of themselves, they can become idolatrous.
  • Jesus speaks calm and comfort into our anxious minds.

Join Pastor Stuart for the ninth and final lesson in our series, Living on a Prayer.

We return one last time to the Gospel According to Matthew 6:7-13 as we examine the idea of . . . "A Fitting End to Our Prayers". In this lesson, we will answer the question, "Why is the phrase 'For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.' in some Bibles, but not in others?"

  • While the issue is somewhat complicated, it can generally be reduced to different views on how to understand the manuscript evidence.
  • Regardless of what view we may take, the phrase in question has definite biblical support and is therefore an appropriate way to end any prayer.
  • Remember, the Lord’s Prayer was meant to be a pattern for our prayers . . . not a slavish recitation.
  • The good news of Jesus tells us that God allows us to share in his power, kingdom, and glory.
  • Therefore, we ought to honor God by praying according to the Scriptures..

  • Because temptation is always a reality in this fallen world, we pray for God’s intervention.
  • We need to understand that temptations come from both within and without.
  • Satan is an actual, personal enemy we dare not ignore.
  • Jesus is more than able to keep us from giving in to temptation and to deliver us from Satan.

This week, we return to the Gospel According to Matthew 6:7-13 as we examine the idea of . . . "Kingdom Prayer". In this lesson, we see:

  • Our prayers are to be kingdom-minded.
  • Broadly speaking, the kingdom can be understood as God’s reign over creation.
  • In a more specific sense, the kingdom is the renewed order in which God’s reign is obvious and unchallenged.
  • So when we pray “your kingdom come,” we are basically praying for a new creation in which sin and its curse are no more.
  • The good news is that Jesus has already inaugurated this kingdom and will consummate it at his return.
  • Therefore, we ought to pray for the full expression of God’s kingdom on earth.

This week, we turn again to the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 1:15-23 to be reminded of God's . . . "Resurrection Power". In this lesson, we see:

  • God wants us to know that he is powerfully at work in all who believe.

  • There are several reasons why someone may not experience this power:

    1. Unbelief.
    2. Unenlightened.
    3. Unwilling to experience "death."
    4. The good news is that even with our deficiencies, God is able to do immeasurably more than we can imagine.

This week, we turn to the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:25-32 for a grace-filled admonishment that we . . . "Don't Grieve the Spirit". In this lesson, we see:

  • Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.
  • The fact that the Spirit can be grieved indicates he is personal.
  • How do we grieve the Spirit?

    1. Because the Spirit is holy (that is, set apart from sin), there is a sense in which all sin is grievous to him.
    2. More specifically, willful, rebellious attitudes and behavior grieve the Spirit.
    3. Even more specifically, relational sins that affect the church community grieve the Spirit.
    4. Because we are sealed by the Spirit for the day of redemption won for us by Christ, we desire to refrain from grieving him.
    5. Therefore, we ought to . . .
    6. Watch our attitude.
    7. Seek relational shalom – especially in the church community.
    8. Be quick to repent of sin.
    9. In all things, rely on the Spirit.

In our fifth lesson, we turn to the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Corinthians 12:1-11 for a reminder of the nature and purpose of . . . "Spiritual Gifts". In this lesson, we see:

  • The Holy Spirit gives gifts to all who are in Christ.
  • While there are a variety of gifts, they are all given for the good of the church.
  • The Spirit decides what gift(s) each believer receives.
  • At the same time, we are encouraged to earnestly desire what is best for the church.
  • The Spirit empowers these gifts so that we are built up in Christ.
  • Ultimately, the gifts of the Spirit point us to Jesus.
  • Therefore, we ought to be eager for the gifts of the Spirit to be used to build up the church.

  • A preliminary point – The word “spiritual” in Scripture ordinarily means “pertaining to the Holy Spirit.”
  • The Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for receiving all God has for us in Christ.
  • Apart from the Spirit:

    • We cannot accept or truly understand God’s truth.
    • We have no access to Christ.
    • As the Spirit of wisdom and truth, the Holy Spirit not only points us to Jesus,
      he connects us to him.
    • Therefore, you can ask the Spirit to reveal more of his truth to you.
    • So, let’s grow in our relationship with God in Christ by the Holy Spirit.

In our fourth lesson, we return to the Apostle Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 3:1-18 for Part 2 of . . . "The Spirit of Freedom". In this lesson, we see:

  • The Spirit gives us freedom to know and experience the glory of God.
  • To grasp the significance of this Spirit-given freedom, we need to understand the account of the veiled glory on the face of Moses.
  • The veil is a symbol of judgment against hard-heartedness.
  • The Spirit removes this veil and frees us to gaze on God’s glory.
  • When we gaze on God’s glory, we can’t help but be changed.
  • We see God’s glory most clearly in the face of Christ.
  • Therefore, for those who don’t yet believe, ask the Spirit to remove the veil so you can know and experience the glory of Christ.

In this lesson, we turn to three passages of Scripture in Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 9:6, and James 3:7-10 as we learn truths about God's . . . "Valuable People". In this lesson, we learn:

  • People have significant value because God created us in his image.
  • A few things we need to know about being the image of God:
    1. The image of God is not something in us or even done by us; it is our status.
    2. While sin prevents us from expressing the full measure of God’s image, our image of God status is not lost or destroyed by sin.
    3. Jesus is THE standard of the image of God.
  • Since we have this status as God’s images, we value others above lesser goods.
  • Therefore, you ought to
    1. Remind yourself daily about the image of God status of the people around you.
    2. Treat people accordingly.

This week, we turn our attention to the Letter of James 1:2-4 to hear the exhortation to, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds." In this sermon, Pastor Stuart teaches about . . . "Joy During Difficulties "

  • We can have joy even in difficult, challenging, or painful circumstances.
  • This joy isn’t found in the circumstances themselves.
  • Joy during difficulties is found in how we consider the circumstances.
  • God is at work even in our most troublesome moments to make us perfect and complete in Christ.
  • Even though we may be tempted to doubt these truths, Jesus deepens our faith.

Join Pastor Stuart in the ninth lesson in our series about Joy.

This week, we turn our attention to the words of John the Baptist in John 3:25-30 as we are reminded that "He must increase, but I must decrease." In this sermon, Pastor Stuart shines a light on . . . "The Joy of Humility"

  • The way of humility brings us great joy.
  • By contrast, pride ultimately leads us to unrest, dissatisfaction, and misery.
  • Much of the joy of humility is found in thinking more about others than ourselves.
  • This is especially true as we humble ourselves to praise and serve God.
  • Jesus is not only the great example of humility; he humbled himself for our salvation.
  • Therefore, we can ask the Spirit to produce true humility in you.

In this sermon, we turn to Psalm 98 to find our delight in the LORD and all that He has done as we embrace the  . . . "The Joy of Worship"

  • There is a substantial connection between worship and joy.
  • This makes sense because worship gets us “outside ourselves.”
  • Part of the joy of worship is rejoicing in what God has given us in Christ.

Join Pastor Stuart as we continue learning what the Scriptures show us about Joy.

In this third installment, we look to the prophet Zephaniah 3:14-17 to remember God's delight in His People and . . . "The Joy of Being Enjoyed"

  • As believers in Christ, we can have great joy because God rejoices over us!
  • This truth is in stark contrast to the way we are often tempted to think about God.
  • God’s joy over us is displayed in his extravagant love for us in Christ.
  • Therefore, we can "marinate" often in the joyful love of God for you in Christ.
  • So, let’s dare to believe and celebrate that in Christ God rejoices over us.

Join Pastor Stuart as we continue our journey exploring what Scripture teaches us about Joy.

This week, we examine God's Word in Galatians 5:13-26 as we learn about the works of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit and see that . . . "Joy is Relational"

  • Joy is fundamentally relational.
  • Selfishness and self-centeredness are in opposition to joy.
  • God’s design is that joy is to be experienced and shared with others.
  • Jesus frees us to experience and share joy with others.
  • Therefore, relying on the Spirit, we can seek opportunities to experience and share joy with others.
  • So, for God’s glory and our good, let’s share the joy God has given us with one another.

We begin our journey examining several passages from the book of Ecclesiastes (2:24-26; 3:12-13; 5:18-20) as we learn that . . . "Joy is a Gift from God"

  • God is the wellspring of every experience of joy we have.
  • The greatest and most lasting joy is the fruit of the Spirit coming from our relationship with God through Christ.
  • Therefore, we can pray for joy.
  • So, let’s believe that as we ask our heavenly Father for the good gift of joy, he will give generously.

Join Pastor Stuart for the final lesson our series Life Together.

This week, we turn to Hebrews 10:19-25 to hear one final mark of the Church living life together . . . "Encourage Ministry Involvement"

  • Christ-followers are to encourage one another to be involved in ministry.
  • Ministry is basically any good work we do in the name of Jesus that demonstrates love.
  • Rather than being passive observers, we are called to engage in and stir up others to good works of love.
  • We’re enabled to do these good works of love because of what Christ has done for us.
  • Therefore, we can look for ways to encourage other Christ-followers to grow in love and good works.
  • So, let’s flourish in stirring up one another to goodness and love.

  • Christ-followers are called to pray for one another.
  • Our prayers for one another are not limited to one area.
  • God gives us powerful encouragement to pray.
  • Our greatest encouragement to pray is found in Christ.
  • Therefore, we can pray specifically for specific people..
  • So, by the power of the Spirit and in the name of Jesus, let’s abound in praying for each other.

This week, we turn to 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 to see that another distinctive mark of the Church living life together is that we . . . "Invest in Each Other"

  • Christ-followers are called to invest in one another.
  • As a covenant community, we don’t simply share information with one another; we share ourselves.
  • The investment we make in others is an expression of love.
  • Investing in others reflects the loving investment Christ has made in us.
  • Therefore, we can intentionally invest in a few folks for Christ’s glory and their good.
  • So, let’s invest well in others knowing the return on those investments is priceless.

This week, we turn to the Apostle John's First Letter 1:5-10 for an exhortation reminding us that . . . "Truth is to be Practiced"

  • The truth about truth is this: Truth is to be practiced.
  • Three significant ways for us to practice the truth:
    1. We embrace our identity as those created to reflect God’s goodness and to have fellowship with him.
    2. We are quick to confess how we fall short.
    3. We cling to Jesus as our only hope and submit to him as Lord.
  • Therefore, we ought to practice the truth.

Join Pastor Stuart in our seventh lesson about The Truth About Truth.

This week, we turn to the Apostle Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 2:11-19 to see that . . . "Truth is to be Handled with Care"

  • The truth about truth is this: Truth should be handled with care.
  • This is true about all truth, but it is especially true when we are handling the truth of Scripture.
  • We need to handle the Scriptures carefully because it is too easy to twist them to say what we want them to say.
  • If we fail to see how the Scriptures point us to Jesus, we have failed to understand them correctly.
  • Therefore, we ought to endeavor to know and understand God’s truth.
    • Ruminate on Scripture, especially on how it leads to Jesus!
    • Ask questions in community.
    • Pray.
    • Trust those who teach faithfully, but verify what they say.
  • So, Let’s make every effort to handle God’s truth with the care it deserves.

This week, we turn to the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Romans 1:18-32 to be reminded that . . . "Sinners Suppress Truth"

  • The truth about truth is this: Sinners Suppress Truth
  • Sinners tend to deny God and his truth while making something other than God central to life.
  • This suppression of truth leads to all kinds of deviations from what is truly good.
  • Christians are not immune to the truth suppressing effects of sin.
  • All of this emphasizes our great need for Jesus.
  • Therefore, we ought to AFFIRM the Truth.
    • Admit how you personally suppress God’s truth.
    • Face the truth of your need for Jesus.
    • Find truth in Christ.
    • Internalize the truth of Scripture.

  • This is because God is the God of truth.
  • Whatever God reveals to us through the Scriptures or the created order in general is always true.
  • This means we can trust God in all that says . . . even the extraordinarily staggering and mind-boggling promises in Christ Jesus.

  • Connecting with others well involves:
    • Genuine love;
    • Honoring others;
    • Empathy.

This week, we turn to four passages in God's Word to learn about . . . "The Heart of Hospitality".

  • "Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality (Rom 12:13, ESV)."
  • "Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach (1 Tim 3:2, ESV)."
  • "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares (Heb 13:2, ESV)."
  • "Show hospitality to one another without grumbling (1 Pet 4:9, ESV)."
  • God calls us to be hospitable to others.
  • At the heart of hospitality is love.
  • We demonstrate hospitable love to others as we welcome them, share with them, and connect with them.
  • We are enabled to show loving hospitality to others because of the loving hospitality God has shown us in Christ.

This week, we look at Psalm 4:5-8 and John 15:9-11 to hear God's enduring call to . . . "Joy".

  • God wants his people to overflow with joy.
  • To embrace this truth, we need to address some of our distorted views concerning joy.
    • Distortion 1: Joy is not an emotion.
    • Distortion 2: Emotions (even emotions like joy) are irrational, childish, unreliable, and can lead to problems, so it’s best, or more godly, to be stoic.
    • Distortion 3: Happiness and joy are two different things.
    • Distortion 4: Enjoying ourselves too much is sinful.
    • Distortion 5: God doesn’t really care about your happiness; he only cares about your holiness.
    • Distortion 6: If God wants us to be joyful we should never feel or express sadness.
  • The fullness of joy is found in Christ.
  • Therefore, we ought to overflow with joy as we
    • Rely on the Spirit,
    • Enjoy God’s good gifts,
    • Jesus is your highest joy,
    • Obey Jesus,
    • Identify distorted thoughts,
    • Celebrate what is good often,
