Entertaining & inspiring conversational talks on God, life, scripture & what it means to be human, recorded weekly in front of a live audience of seekers, sinners & maybe even a few saints-in-the-making at the original South Hills Church location in Corona, CA.
At the beginning of every year, we cross our fingers and hope for our best year yet. We imagine the places we’ll go, things we’ll achieve, and person we’ll become. But by the time you hit June, real life has kicked in—things came up, plans changed, you got off track. You still have the same goals; you just don’t have the time to invest in them. Why does this keep happening? Is it possible to change it? If so, where would you start?

Everybody has spent time daydreaming about what they’d do if they suddenly came into a lot of money. We imagine all the ways we could make our lives better. “I’d buy this. Go there. Support that.”. But we’re not entirely selfish. We also imagine the ways we’d make other people’s lives better. We’re big-hearted, generous people, we just don’t have the money to do what we want to do. We definitely would if we could. But would we though?

When everything falls apart, everybody calls out to God. We beg Him for help, guidance, miracles. We promise we’ll do things His way if He’ll just put us back on the right path. But when life is good, a lot of us don’t even think about God. We’re doing fine and don’t really need God. At least not like we used to. But is that true? We’ve all seen stories of successful people blowing their lives up. How do we keep from being one of them?

Did Jesus really spit in a disabled guy’s mouth? It seems wrong on so many levels, I don’t even know where to start. Is Jesus ridiculing or demeaning this guy? If He was trying to help or heal him, couldn’t He have chosen something a lot less embarrassing? Was Jesus just being a jerk? How do we make sense of this?

Did Jesus really call church people “children of the devil”? What did He mean by that?
And why is He getting into a name-calling shouting match in the first place? What did these people do to deserve that? Even if it was pretty bad, couldn’t He have handled it differently? Did He lose control or is He doing this on purpose?

Did Jesus really tell people to hate their mom & dad? I thought we were supposed to love everyone. How does this fit with all that “love your enemy” stuff? Is Jesus really commanding us to hate people? What are we missing? Why is He using such harsh language? And why in the world would you bring this up on Mother’s Day?

Did Jesus really say God might not forgive you if you don’t forgive others? I thought salvation was a free gift from God. Is His forgiveness conditional? If so, how many conditions are there? What if you can’t live up to all of them? Does this mean—if someone hurts you and you can’t put it behind you, you don’t get to go to heaven?

Did Jesus really smash up someone’s business? If He’s so kind and loving, why would He break displays, damage merchandise, and run off customers? Isn’t that vandalism? I thought Jesus was anti-violence. Didn’t He tell us to love, serve, & pray for our enemies? Why would He destroy their livelihood? Is it ok for me to?

Sometimes it’s hard to fully enjoy when things are going good, because in the back of your mind you’re wondering, “How long is this going to last?” You probably shouldn’t relax too much, enjoy too much, share too much. Because something is going to happen and it’s all going to evaporate. Sure, you’re grateful for what you’ve got, but you’ve got to be on your guard. You want to be open, encouraging, and giving, but within reason. Isn’t leaning too far in that direction just an invitation to be taken advantage of?

We all have certain things we have a hard time keeping in check—bad habits, thought patterns, coping mechanisms, unhelpful desires, unhealthy relationships. It’s usually not something we’re proud of. We want to deal with it, but quietly. Which is code for—alone. But somehow, protecting our pride seems to make the problem worse. What do we do with the parts of us that have gotten out of control? Where do we take them? Who do we talk to? How do we get help? Is healing even possible?

Everybody’s afraid of something. For some of us, it is spiders, snakes, or spoiled milk. Most of these things we can avoid. But what about the other stuff? The big stuff. The stuff there aren’t exterminators or sniff tests for. Things like failure, rejection, abandonment. The fear of these things stands between you and everything you want. They deal death blows to opportunities, relationships, and dreams. How do you keep them from killing yours?

Ever wonder if you’re doing the right thing? How do you know what opportunities to take, friendships to pursue, issues to address? And in what order? And what do you avoid? How do you know if what you’re doing is going anywhere good? There’s got to be a better way to make decisions than polling our friends and scrolling TikTok for advice from strangers. What do you do when you’re trying to figure out what to do?

Seems like if you ask most people how they’re doing, you’re likely to get one of two responses—tired or busy. And of course we are. We have so many responsibilities, dreams, demands, and expectations on our shoulders. We’ve got to hustle if we’re going to make it all happen. But should we be this exhausted all the time? Anxiety and insomnia are on the rise. What would it look like to slow down, rest, & refuel (without a tropical vacation)? Is that even possible? How do you find daily peace in such a fast-paced culture?

There are so many things we want, and nonstop advertising makes us want even more. We strive to get what we want and worry we’re not going to have what we need, when we need it. We get nervous over rumors of the economy tanking, our industry shrinking, layoffs happening, prices rising, or disaster lurking. What if we can’t make ends meet? How do we handle the anxiety around not having enough or losing what we have?

We’ve all had a moment where someone pushed our buttons and that pushed us over the edge. We said and did things out of defensiveness, anger, and aggression. We tell people we’re working on it, but we’re not even sure what that would look like. People say it’s all in your mind but if that’s true, why does your blood pressure rise, face flush, and rationality go out the window? What if it’s not your brain getting you into trouble, but your body? And if that’s true, how do you keep the way you feel from overpowering how you think?

we’re constantly being bombarded with stories, images, and online experts telling us we should be dreaming bigger and doing better. We want to have and do it all. But that desire doesn’t match our day-to-day. When our lives don’t turn out the way we hoped they would, or should, it’s hard not to drag that disappointment into our relationship. Is it possible to pursue your dreams while holding on to reality? How do you feel good about yourself in your relationship when it becomes clear you’ll never measure up to everyone you’re chasing online?

We’re all busy. It feels like we’ve got more to do than can possibly get done. The moment you feel like you’ve locked in your schedule, something else always seems to come up. Then you scroll through social media and learn you’re doing almost everything wrong, everyone else is winning, and there’s at least three essential life goals you’re already behind on. It’s hard to know what to do and in what order. It’s easy to live distracted and overwhelmed, leaving your core relationships with whatever crumbs are leftover. How do we keep what we say is most important from getting the worst of our time, energy, attitude, and attention?

Couples fight, relationships become strained and sometimes break apart. That’s clear. The question is—why? Our assumption is we picked the wrong person, don’t have the right chemistry, or have somehow fallen out of love. But what if it’s less about your relationship with them and more about your relationship with stress? The world is moving faster and becoming more unpredictable and pressure filled. Could it be we’re mislabeling and mismanaging the real issue? What if you could get to the root of what’s going on between you? Is it possible that what’s pulling your relationship apart is something outside the relationship altogether?

Of course we care about other people, we’re not monsters. We’ll pray for them; we just don’t want to get personally involved with them. That feels like too much. You’re just one person. You can’t meet everybody’s needs. If you do something once, they’re going to expect it all the time. And that just sounds exhausting. Sure, you want to help people. But how do you know who to help, and when, and how, and how much?

We tend to be drawn to people who seem similar. It’s not hard to like someone who’s like you. But often, our neighbors aren’t at all like us. They look different, talk different, dress different, believe different, vote different. But Jesus doesn’t tell us to show love to those we feel close to, but to those we live next to. How does that work with people you have nothing in common with? Some of these people don’t just seem different, they seem dangerous. When Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, there’s got to be some exceptions, so what are they?

You’re busy. Who isn’t? Your To-Do list grows faster than you can check it off. There’s work and school and bills and goals and kids and…at least seven other things you’re forgetting. Isn’t this what’s annoying about the words of Jesus—He invites us to do things even though we’ve already got too much to do. How do you care about other people when you can barely find the time to take care of yourself? Is there some secret? How do you juggle it all? Is it even possible to live out these ancient expectations in our modern world?

Jesus famously told his followers to love their neighbors. It’s a noble idea, but there’s a catch: it’s hard to show love to someone you’ve never spent time with. Statistically, most of us don’t know our neighbors. We’re not intentionally avoiding them; we’ve just got our own stuff going on. We keep our heads down and mind our own business. And so do they. It’s sort of our unspoken agreement. How interested or involved does Jesus want us to be in the lives of those who live next door? Are his expectations even realistic anymore?

Christmas is celebrated as a season of connection, family, and belonging. It seems to be what all the holiday songs and Hallmark movies are promising. But what something is supposed to be, isn’t always what it is. For some, it’s a season that spotlights their sadness. While many of us can’t wait to get together, others are wrestling with the weight of being left out. Maybe you’ve been there. Maybe you’re there now. If you’re not, you know someone who is. How do we turn this into a season of hope for everybody, not just your favorite somebodies?

Of course you want to make a difference. But you can’t do what you wish you could do. Not in this economy. Obviously, you have plans to do more when you have more. What you’ve got available is so little, it’s laughable. What’s the point of giving, serving, or contributing if it doesn’t change much? People say every little bit counts, but that’s just something they say. How do you give hope when all you have doesn’t feel like it’ll help?

Everybody likes guarantees. We want to sample things without getting stuck with them. If it doesn’t fit, I’m sending it back. If it doesn’t work, I want a refund. If it doesn’t pan out, I want out. This isn’t a bad approach to shopping, but it is to spirituality. Faith requires us to step out before you know if things will work out. We’re told God’s taking us somewhere good, but we’re worried about what we may have to go through to get there. How do you hang onto hope when nothing in your story is happening how you thought it would or should?

Ever look at someone else’s life, connections, and resources, and think, “If I had all that, I could really make a difference.”? In other words, you have access to social media, right? It’s not hard to see what’s wrong with the world but setting it right won’t be easy. Our lives, abilities, and bank accounts feel way too small to make a big impact. How do you stay hopeful when it feels like nothing you could ever do would even make a dent?

At least once or twice a year, we all end up around a table with people we might not see all that often. Maybe it’s a holiday, a celebration, a graduation. Part of you probably looks forward to it, and another part of you maybe sort of dreads it because you’re not sure what subjects are going to come up. You’ve seen their Facebook posts. You’ve watched the TikTok’s they share. Some of them know you don’t share their perspective. Others assume you probably do. Either way, you’re not sure you want to get into it. Or maybe you can’t wait for the opportunity to put them in their place. You’re almost obligated to. They need to know how wrong they are. And if you don’t tell them, how will they ever figure it out? Isn’t that your responsibility as a faithful follower of Christ? It feels like your only options are to fight with them or avoid them altogether. Which is better? Or is there a third way?

Leading up to an election, there’s all this emphasis on the importance of voting and who you vote for. There’s this sense that if we could just get this person into office, or this party into power, or this policy in place—that would fix everything. And you were a part of it. And now you’re done. Sure, there are things that still are not as they should be. We’re not even talking about halfway around the world, just halfway up your street. But that stuff’s not your problem. You’re one of the good ones—you voted—and posted about voting. You fulfilled God’s purpose for you. What more can you really do? Wait a minute…

You’ve been there—you thought you knew someone and then you found out WHO or WHAT they voted for. Now you wonder if you completely misjudged them. You thought you had more in common; that they saw the world as clearly as you do. You assumed they were a person of good character, values, & morals. But I guess not. God’s opinions are obvious, aren’t they? How can a person of faith come to completely different conclusions than you? You know YOU’RE not wrong. That must mean they’re not a real Christian. Which is disappointing and confusing because sometimes they seem Christlike. What do we do with these discrepancies?

There’s nothing more nerve-wracking than a looming presidential election. You feel the tension everywhere—online debates, attack ads, opinion pieces, and whole lot of warnings about what will inevitably happen if the other side wins. We’re made to feel like the fate of the universe hangs on the outcome of this election. Everywhere you turn, your fear buttons are being pushed, and so are everyone else’s. The trouble is—no one is at their best when they’re afraid. Fear turns us into someone we don’t want to be and gets us to do things we wish we wouldn’t have done. Some of our fears are manufactured or exaggerated, but others are real. So, what’s the wisest thing to do when we’re made to feel afraid?

Few things are as annoying as entitlement; acting as if you’re owed certain things or are unaware of all the effort that went into getting you what you got. Ever done something for someone who was ungrateful for your effort? Ever given your best to something you didn’t have to do at all, and someone still complained about it. Ever give a little, only to have someone reject it and demand even more. These moments boil our blood. But you’ve done things like this to other people, maybe even without knowing it. In a world that’s always telling us to reach for more, it’s hard to be grateful for what you’ve got. How can we get better at acknowledging and being thankful for everything we have and everything that’s been done for us? And how might being this way change the way we relate to everyone?

We all know people who never seem to apologize for anything, and others who apologize for practically everything. Nobody likes those who can’t admit they’re wrong. It’s easy to see them as self-absorbed, arrogant, excuse makers. At the same time, we can’t always tell when we’re wrong. We’re not always aware of how the things we do impact and affect other people. How do we learn to see our actions through other people’s eyes? How do we know what to apologize for and when? Would leaning into “sorry” make us better or just weaker?

Pretty much every kid is told to say, “Please.” But it may have been a while since you’ve heard an adult say it. In our culture, we tend to think of polite people as pushovers. We like stories about confident, charismatic figures who know what they want, demand what they need, and don’t take crap from anybody. Maybe that’s what comes to mind when you think of a strong leader. But it’s not even close to the picture the Bible paints. Which makes sense if you’ve ever been pushed around by someone with a little bit of power. Is it possible to be successful in our world, have healthy relationships, and be people of “please”? Or is that just silly?

Words carry weight. We know it, but don’t always act like it. We’ve all spent a ton of time carefully crafting the perfect text or email. We’ve all also carelessly said something that came back to haunt us. There are some conversations we wish we could remember, and others we wish we could forget. Certain phrases stick with us forever. They’re part of the reason we are who we are. And what someone else’s words did to you, your words are doing to someone else. What would it look like to be more thoughtful and intentional with what you say?

Keep your hands to yourself. We’re all told this at a young age. Because kids are touchy. Initially, we ignore these instructions. That is—until a stove burns us, a thorn pricks us, or another kid hits us.
Too much touch is a problem, but so is too little. Humans with no physical connections emotionally shut down.
In Scripture we see a faith that’s every bit as natural as is supernatural. God came to us in a physical body, ate & drank with us, worked & walked among us, and suffered & died for us. He could’ve remained at a distance but chose to come touch-ably close. Why? In a digital age where everything can be done online through an app, how could connecting to our bodies, tangible experiences, and physical objects—shift our understanding of spirituality?

We all have foods we like and foods we hate. You’ve gotten into arguments about it before. There are certain meals you’d save up and drive across the country for. And there are other things you still wouldn’t eat even if you were starving. We’re obsessed with food. And so is Scripture. There’s so much talk of eating in the Bible—lists of foods you can’t have; of feasts you should throw; and fasts you should commit to. God rains bread from heaven. Jesus turns water into wine. A bite of an apple ruins the world. And before Christ went to the cross,
He insisted on inviting his friends over for one last supper. What is all this about? It’s got to be something more than just nutrients. Why does what, where, how, and with whom we eat carry so much relational and spiritual significance?

Ever been really excited to walk into a restaurant because of how good it smelled? Ever refused to walk into a public restroom because of how bad it smelled? Smells are signals. But they don’t just tell us what we’re about to walk into. They remind us of where we’ve come from and what we’ve been through. Almost every time Scripture prescribes a spiritual practice, it’s accompanied by a scent. There are all sorts of elaborate descriptions of fragrant oils & perfumes, and burning incense & animal fat. Why does God seem to care so much about this? And what can we learn from His reasoning? How might the scents we surround ourselves with shift our experiences and solidify our memories?

Ever been so distracted by the coffee shop conversations around you that you couldn’t think straight? Ever gotten so sucked into the energy of a loud crowd that it changed your mood? Ever decided you couldn’t be friends with someone when you found out what kind of music they liked? Maybe you can’t fall asleep without the gentle buzz of a fan by your side. Or maybe you didn’t notice the weird noise your car was making because you’re never not listening to a podcast. We’re surrounded by sound, but that doesn’t mean we hear it all. What might you be missing? Jesus famously said, “They that have ears should hear.” Sounds obvious. But He’s implying we ought to be listening for something specific. What? How can being more intentional about WHAT we hear change WHO we are for the better?

Ever look right at something but not see it? Maybe you didn’t know what you were looking at. Maybe you just couldn’t focus. Maybe your eyes were on it, but your mind was somewhere else. Ever looked at the same thing as someone else but saw something totally different? How we look at things changes what we see, and what we see changes what we do. So, the question is—What might you be missing? Scripture talks a lot about light, sight, visions, and blindness. How might taking its advice seriously open our eyes both physically & spiritually?

Are you filled with ideas, dreams, and desire to make a lasting impact, but instead of making moves you’re stuck in your own head? Maybe you’re caught up in a daily grind that feels directionless or you’re exhausted because you can’t say no to opportunities that make you feel significant. Constantly searching for the right path or the perfect calling is a prime way to miss the good thing that’s right in front of you. Perhaps the secret to leaving a legacy is less about getting stuff done and more about finding joy in each day.

Are you your own worst critic? Constantly devaluing your own thoughts, words, and actions to avoid judgement and shame. Do you habitually compare yourself to others without even realizing? You probably have a knack for spotting untapped potential and value in others, but are you giving yourself the same opportunity to grow and evolve? Instead of striving for perfectionism, it’s times to consider that sharing your weaknesses without fear is your greatest opportunity for self-love.

Do you ever feel like you’re helping everyone around you win, but you can’t ever seem to measure up? You work hard, achieve countless goals, and exude confidence, but deep down you wonder if people really see your talents and accomplishments. Maybe you grew up in a household where love felt like a prize to be won, and failure was a curse word. You might fear that all your sacrifices will never amount to something significant. But have you considered that true success might be less about getting the “W”, and more about how you handle the process, no matter the outcome?

We’ve all had moments where we feel like we don’t belong, but do you catch yourself consistently searching for acceptance? Do you feel alone, surround by people who love you? Are you constantly trying to morph into what you believe others want you to be? Author Brene Brown says, “True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.” Perhaps it’s time to consider that your “differences” aren’t an inconvenience, but a gift. And sharing them with the people in your life might provide the very closeness you so desire.

You want to make people happy. What’s wrong with that? Sure, when they’re not, you’re nervously convinced it’s probably your fault. Maybe you did something wrong or just didn’t so something right. You find yourself trying to anticipate the needs of others so you can meet them. It’s so obvious to you that everyone wants to be seen, heard and known. Why shouldn’t you do everything you can to make sure that’s true of the people around you? Most of the time you don’t mind, but it is exhausting. And you frequently find yourself over-committing, over-investing, and over-extending yourself. You just wish someone would do for you what you do for everyone else and wonder why they don’t. How do you love people well without feeling used, worn out, and taken advantage of? Is that even realistic?

All of us have moments of stress, but some of us walk around with an ever-present uneasiness eating away at us. Other people say you’re nervous, but you think of yourself as cautious. There is this part of you that feels like you’ve always got to be on guard. When you walk into a room, your eyes dart around, clocking the exits and anything odd or out of place. You’re sensitive and observant. You like having a plan and hate surprises. But there’s an ocean of anxiety swirling inside you. You often find yourself on autopilot, imagining worst-case scenarios and what you’d do in them. It’s hard for you to rely on other people because they’re not as hypervigilant as you. What do you do with that? Is this just the way it is or is there any way to truly settle into a sense of safety, and learn to lean on the people around you?

Ever notice that others don’t seem to get worked up or passionate about the same things as you? In fact, if you’re honest, sometimes the oversized reactions you have to certain situations surprise even you. Ever wonder—Where’d that come from? Why did I do that? At times it almost seems like you’re struggling to feel normal in an area everyone else has already figured out. What’s going on there? What if you could actually get an answer? What if you could figure out what’s driving your most impulsive thoughts, feelings, and actions? And what if you could know that for everyone you share life with? We think you can. And the answer is found in identifying your Primal Question.

We all say the same thing to ourselves when we get hurt, “Never again! I’m never going to put myself in this sort of situation or let someone take advantage of me in this way again.” And we mean it. And we stick to it. For a while. But eventually, over time, we look up and are surprised to find ourselves wounded in the same way. How does this happen? We were determined to be selective with our trust this time. We could’ve sworn we were being so vigilant. How did we miss the warning signs and end up repeating the same mistakes? Is it just inevitable,
or is it at all avoidable?

When we count on someone and they take advantage of our trust, the pain can cause us to want to write them off forever. Are there situations where that’s ok? And if it’s not, what then? Are you just supposed to put your head down, ignore your feelings, cross your fingers, and pray it doesn’t happen again? That sounds stupid. And maybe even a bit dangerous. Is it realistic to think you can rebuild trust with someone once it’s been broken?
If it is, how? And how long does it take? And how do you know when it’s done? What if you want to patch things up, but they don’t? What then? Are these questions even answerable?

Obviously, we don’t trust those who’ve proven untrustworthy. But what happens when someone seems to be trustworthy, and you still don’t trust them? You’ve been there, right? No matter what they say or do, you can’t help but brace yourself for the inevitable let down. There’s something wrong with everyone, but what if your inability to trust is the thing that’s wrong with you? Suspicion was the gear you shifted into, to protect yourself at one time, but even though that situation or relationship is over, you can’t seem to shake it. Once you’ve been burned, how do you learn to trust again? Can you? Or are you doomed to always be this defensive?

We all know what it feels like not to trust someone. But is that all trust is—a feeling?
Where do these feelings even come from? Are they ever wrong? What is it that makes someone trustworthy?
Is it a matter or faith or proof? How transferable is trust? If we trust someone with one thing, does that mean we should trust them with everything? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to map trust & objectively measure how trustworthy someone is in any given circumstance, including yourself? We think there is. And so does God, it seems.

We’ve all heard someone say, “I don’t trust people.” And they probably have pretty good reasons for it. Maybe when someone says, “Trust me”, there’s part of you that bristles. When someone violates our trust, instead of just seeing them as untrustworthy, we can assume—maybe everyone is untrustworthy. We become suspicious of the motives & actions of everyone around us. Which is understandable, but not all that functional. Life requires trust because it involves other people—they prepare our food, handle our money, and build our freeways. Without trust we’d live alone in a bunker. The question is—why did God make us so dependent on one another? And why is making an effort to try and trust again ultimately worth it?

Ever wonder why other people just don’t get it? The truth is so obvious. And you know what you’re talking about. You’ve looked into it. You’ve done the research. You’ve analyzed what’s out there. And you’re pretty sure you see things clearly. Why can’t everybody else just get on board? It’s up to you to show them where they’re wrong and tell them how to make things right. Have you gotten a little heated, aggressive, condescending at times? Sure. But it’s ok. You’re right. The truth hurts and it’s supposed to.

Ever had an issue you just couldn’t seem to escape? Maybe it was a bad habit, negative thought process, destructive impulse, or unhealthy relationship pattern. Whatever it is, you don’t like that you do it. At times you thought you were over it, but reluctantly crawled back to it. Is this just the way you are? Is there nothing you can do? Do you find yourself feeling annoyed a lot—about all sorts of things, large and small? You’re not a hateful person, you just want things to be right. And when they’re not, you can’t help but see it and be frustrated by it. Sometimes it feels like other people aren’t even trying. And the more you think about it, the more upset you get. People have started walking on eggshells around you. That’s not what you want, but you also don’t want to lower your standards. What do you do with all the frustration you feel and how do you keep it from ruining your relationships with others?

Ever been told you’re hard on yourself? Ever have trouble believing the nice things people say about you? When something doesn’t go as planned, do you assume it’s probably your fault? It’s easy to assume Christian maturity is following the strictest rules, memorizing the most verses, and meeting the highest standards. We can tend to think the less joy we exude, the more spiritual we are. But Jesus didn’t seem to share this perception. He was less concerned with the rules people followed then the health of the relationships they were a part of. He believed if God was truly working in you, it would positively impact everyone around you. He was convinced that if your life wasn’t becoming more peaceful, patient, kind, and self-controlled, then you weren’t really living life His way. What would it look like to take Jesus’ definition of spiritual maturity seriously? And how would we implement it?

Christians have a reputation of acting as if the world is doomed and their main objective is to complain about it, survive it, and eventually escape it. They seem to believe hope is reserved for heaven, and the only thing available on earth is pessimism. Jesus called His followers the “light of the world”, but many people experience them as a dark cloud of discouragement. But what if hope wasn’t something reserved for later, but something we can access here and now? What if God’s expectation isn’t that we escape the earth, but that we bring heaven to earth? If we could, how would we do it? What would that look like? And how might it change our outlook on life if we truly believed it were possible?

Many people walk away from church because they felt as if they were surrounded by hypocrites—people who said one thing but did another. And honestly, they’re not wrong. The church IS full of hypocrites because it’s full of people, and people are often inconsistent. The problem we have is not that people make mistakes, it’s that they won’t admit to and own their mistakes, while coming down on others for theirs. That’s what we can’t stand. And as it turns out, Jesus couldn’t stand it either. But His solution wasn’t to lower God’s expectations, but to invite people to look in the mirror and start with themselves. But to do this, they’d need more than willpower. They’d need the power of the Holy Spirit to help them face the worst parts of themselves, something many of us still aren’t willing to do.

If you ask an outsider what they think of Christians, they’re likely to say, “They’re judgmental and think they’re better than everyone else.” And there’s a good chance their answer is based on personal experience. Some won’t set foot inside a church because they’re convinced all eyes will be on them, staring them down as if they don’t belong. They’re convinced the only way to fit in is to fix everything about themselves first. Interestingly, this isn’t the experience people had with Jesus at all. The most notorious sinners felt comfortable sitting, eating, talking, and laughing with Jesus. And many of these people made radical changes to their lives without being called out, condemned, or shamed for their sin. Jesus was focused on building real relationship, not getting people to behave according to the rules. What would it look like to make His way our way?

We’re told that what God wants to do in the world is for everyone everywhere and we’re all part of His plan. But, ever feel like that can’t be true of you? Ever feel like you have nothing worthwhile to offer or contribute? Ever feel like when God built the kit to rescue the world, He threw in a couple of spare parts for good measure…and that’s you? We all have moments where we feel this way? Why is that? What is it that God wants YOU to do to build His Kingdom here on earth? What does that even mean? And why is it so essential that we understand and act on what He’s asked us to do?

Everybody knows that just like a road trip isn’t complete without music, a church service isn’t complete without worship. We may not know why that is. But we know that it is. It’s obvious there’s something powerful about music, but why do we need to huddle together and sing love songs in the dark to someone who’s invisible. It’s weird. Why has this been a staple of religious gatherings since humans started having them? Does God require it? Are we obligated to do it? Is it how we prove our worth and earn His blessing? Or is it about something else altogether? How might knowing what God intends it to be change how we approach it and how fulfilling we find it?

Life is busy and shows no signs of slowing down. That means doing a lot of our life on-the-go: looking over a proposal while in another meeting, taking a phone call at your kid’s soccer practice, eating alone in your car. A lot of us have a hard time being fully present with the people in front of us—not multitasking, thinking about what’s next, or wishing we were somewhere else. We get a lot done but end up feeling disconnected from ourselves and others. If there was one thing Jesus was famous for during His life, it was slowing down, sitting down, and sharing meals with people. So many stories in the gospels are just Him eating. Then He tells His followers to carry on His tradition. What’s going on here? And what do long, meandering meals with others have to do with faith?

The last thing any parent wants their kid to be is a spoiled brat. But, in today’s culture, that’s tricky to avoid. It’s hard enough for adults not to become preoccupied with their own wants and desires. Especially when we’re all told that we deserve better. We’re entitled. How do we keep from being demanding and dissatisfied? Is it something we can sustain long-term? The early New Testament church seemed to have found a hack. What was it? And is there any proof it’ll still work today?

So much of what we think we need is dictated by what those around us have. We feel the pressure to keep up with and occasionally one-up our neighbors. But social media has expanded our community of comparison to everyone in existence. Which is a little overwhelming. Why is so much of our self-worth tied to what we have, and why do even those who have a lot often feel worthless? How do we break our addiction to more? And how do we teach our kids there’s more to life than having the best stuff?

Statistically, most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, barely making ends meet regardless of how much they make. It’s easier to make money than to make a plan for your money. We tend to just spend what we get on whatever we need in the moment, not realizing that some of our needs may just be wants in disguise. How can you tell the difference? Is it the same for everybody? Is it even realistic to stick to a budget in a modern age? If so, how?

Most families don’t talk about money, especially to their kids. Which is a shame because money is a big part of life. A lot of us leave home without much of a financial compass. What we do know we’ve cobbled together from peers, commercials, and social media. Most of that advice leads us to crave what we don’t have and spend what we haven’t earned. Few people have taken time to think about their philosophy of money, but Jesus talked a lot about just that. He seemed to think the way you spend has a lot to do with what you value and that you could redirect your values with the way you handle your money.

Getting started with something new is tough enough but sustaining a habit long-term is even harder.

It’s not enough to know what’s most important; you have to say no to what’s not. Most of us are aware we should say no, and maybe even what or who we should say no to. But we’re nervous about the repercussions. So, how do we courageously navigate no with the least amount of collateral damage?

Whether you laugh or cringe, we’re all familiar with fictional NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby’s prayer to “Dear 8lb, 6oz newborn infant Jesus.” When he said “I like the Christmas-Jesus best,” he said out-loud what many of us think internally. Christmas-Jesus is adorable, cute, and easy to imagine. We keep the Jesus of our faith small and contained, like an ancient fairy-tale we recite to get warm feelings. While we should embrace the wonder of God-made-flesh, we also need to remember that this infant is our King, and he calls us to follow him with our whole lives. We’re in danger of exchanging a child-like fiath for a childish faith.

The gifts that the wisemen gave Jesus were deeply meaningful, symbolic and extravagant. Those gifts, according to many, were the impetus for the Christmas tradition of gift-giving. While there is nothing wrong with gift-giving, gift-buying has become an increasingly large focus for many. Christmas for many just means consumerism, debt, and wish-lists. Is it possible to spend less, but give more? Or will we spend every Christmas climbing out from underneath this pile of stuff?

Every nativity play we’ve seen has the grumpy innkeeper who turns Mary & Joseph away. We imagine a heartless man slamming the door in the face of a pregnant woman. Scripture actually says almost nothing about who this person was, or why they turned the young couple away. But what we do know is that, whether it was intentional or not, there was an unwillingness to make space that first Christmas. Still today, many of us have no room left to experience the beauty of Christmas – and a tangible experience of God’s presence.

Because of his murderous campaign to kill every boy child under 2 years old, Herod is the obvious villain of the Christmas story. He’s also the easiest villain to look down on, because his actions are so evil we can only compare them to something from a movie. But, while his actions are unimaginable, his motivations are much more familiar to us. King Herod’s grasping for power led him to commit one tragedy after another. For many of us, our yearning for power is a threat to Christmas still.

There’s nothing like the feeling of finally getting on top of something you’ve been battling for a while. Compulsions are hard to kick. And our tendency, when we get a taste of freedom, is to boldly announce, “I’m never going back there! I’m not going to let that have a hold on me like that again!” And we mean it. But for most people, freedom from our addictions doesn’t seem to last. How many of us know someone who worked unbelievably hard to crawl out of the hole they were in, only to find themselves back in debt, gaining all the weight back, falling for the same sort of guy they swore off last time? Why do so many of us relapse? Are we doomed? Is it possible to get free and stay free or is true freedom a pipe dream?

For the most part, our mindset is, “I should be able to do whatever I want, as long as I’m not hurting anyone.” And most of our indulgences don’t seem to be. Who cares if you add more clothes you don’t need to your closet, or sneak an extra piece of cake in the breakroom, or lose sight of your other obligations during NFL season? Although, if what we were doing was hurting someone, would we even notice? Is it possible that some of our pursuits are doing a disservice to our bodies, budgets, or relationships in ways we don’t even realize? Saying ‘yes’ to anything means saying ‘no’ to something else. Could it be we’re saying ‘no’ to something ultimately meaningful in pursuit of something temporarily enjoyable? Are their costs we’re not calculating? And if they suddenly came into view, what would you do?

Ever have something you don’t like about yourself that you wish you could change? And you think, “I’m just going to do this on my own. Nobody needs to know about this. I can figure it out.” But it ends up being WAY more difficult than you thought. You start to think you might need help, but you hate the thought of asking for it. Others may not feel this way, but for you, confessing this is too embarrassing. What will they think of you? How will it change your relationship? Shouldn’t you know how to deal with this by now? Why does getting better have to involve other people?

We all have little things we can’t imagine life without—online shopping, Monday night football, after dinner ice cream. They’re bright spots in our day; stuff that makes us happy and enables us to push through. But sometimes we come to lean on it a little too much. We move from liking it to needing it. In fact, we get really upset if we have to go without it. When does a hobby or habit become an addiction? Would you even be able to tell if it crossed that line? And if it had, would you be willing to face it and do something about it?

Family members aren’t always going to get along. That’s a given. With different personalities come different preferences and perspectives. We’re bound to disagree and get on each other’s nerves. Obviously, we can overlook the small stuff, but what about the big stuff? What happens when someone says or does something deeply wounding that they can’t take back? The type of stuff you can’t undo, or fully make up for. What then? Are there certain levels of hurt relationships just can't recover from? How do you make peace with people who don’t seem sorry and may never change? You don’t, right? You can’t. Or can you?

We all know people who didn’t grow up in a great family but made their way through life leaning on their “chosen” family. These are people they’re not biologically related to, but who love, support, challenge, and encourage them to be their best selves. They needed these extra influences because they didn’t have access to a built-in family. But does that mean that those who do, don’t need additional help from the outside? If a family was completely healthy and godly, should they be able to meet all of each other’s needs on their own? Can you become who God has called you to be without the involvement of anyone but your family?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Family first!” What does that mean though? Is the family unit more important than the individuals in it? Does being a part of a family mean letting go of your personal identity? What if what’s good for them is bad for you? The Bible seems to talk a lot about sacrifice. Is that God’s expectation—that give up our goals and dreams for the sake of our family? What if you’re giving so much it’s making you unhealthy? Most families say they want to support each other, but if that’s true, why does it feel like some are doing all the work and others are reaping all the benefits? Is that just the way it is?

We all have a high need for belonging; to feel like we fit with a group of people. We want to be known, loved, and accepted for who we are. But when it comes to family, it can feel like we have pick one or the other. Like we can either be honest OR accepted, but we can’t be both. Why do some of us feel least comfortable with those we should have the closest connection to? Can you ONLY truly belong with people who see eye-to-eye with you on everything? Is diversity possible in a close-knit family? Or is “my way or the highway” the only way?

We all want to be happy. We design our lives around it. We want to have fun, be carefree, and enjoy our day to day. And obviously, we want the same thing for our family. Few things make us sadder than seeing those we love unhappy. But sometimes they are. Happiness is a hard state to sustain. Expectations go unmet, preferences clash, and feelings get hurt. What then? Do we ignore it, try and fix it, change the subject, force everyone into alignment? If someone in my family is unhappy, what’s my responsibility? Isn’t making each other happy the whole point of family? If not, then what is?

Nobody likes feeling out of control, but for some of us, uncertainty keeps us up at night. It’s our constant preoccupation. We want to know that everything is going to happen the way we want it to when we want it to. Almost at any cost. The issue is—there are so many uncontrollable variables in so many areas of life. We end up deciding, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” But then we find ourselves overcommitted and overextending, burning ourselves out trying to hold everything together. And our obsession with control not only fries our nerves and robs us of sleep it drives the people around us crazy and sometimes wrecks relationships altogether. What do we do with this need to have a handle on a life that constantly feels like it's slipping through our fingers?

Ever fantasize about having enough money not to work? You could just relax. That’d be the dream, wouldn’t it? Work sometimes feels like an annoying interruption to what we want to be doing and the life we wish we were living. Ever just wish you could walk away? It’s hard to hate your job but need the money. Life can start to feel like a survival cycle of gritting your teeth, grinding it out, and daydreaming about your days off. And it’s not always because your job is hard, sometimes it’s…bland—pointless, meaningless, monotonous. Then again, there are people who seem to love their work, even some who have low status jobs we’d never want. What have they learned that maybe we haven’t? And what does Scripture have to say about the purpose of work and how to make your work situation work for you?

It's natural to want to be liked, fit in, and feel like you belong. But is it possible to become too preoccupied with the opinions and approval of others? What happens when your worth feels directly tied to being understood, admired, or respected by certain people? When any sort of disagreement or rejection feels like a death blow? When you find yourself wondering if anyone truly wants you for you? Sometimes in our pursuit of being liked by others, we lose sight of who we are and how to care for ourselves. We feel like we have to constantly strive and perform to earn acceptance and we project neediness on those around us. Why does this happen & how do we break free?

It’s easy to look around our nation (at all the disagreement, debate, angst, and anger) and wonder: Is it all hopeless? The chaos of our current political climate can make you sick to your stomach. And before you know it, you find yourself in a full-on panicked fight for your side—because what’s at stake feels way bigger than a single election, candidate, policy, or party. It feels like hope itself is hinged to these things. And there’s not a more desperate feeling. Where does it come from? What does it look and feel like? What produces it and what does it produce? What if the issue isn’t that it doesn’t exist, but that we’re looking in the wrong places for it?

When our values feel threatened, our impulse is to fight back. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that, but does it ever go too far? Where are the lines? Are there any? Some of us get so preoccupied with defending our politics that we end up driving people from our faith. Our loyalty to Jesus takes a backseat to our loyalty to a party or policy. If you’re honest—which are you more interested in winning people to—your political views or your spiritual beliefs? Do your words & actions reflect your answer? And if not, what might it be costing you, your neighbors, and Christianity itself?

We’ve all looked at someone with an opposing view and wondered, “How could they think that?” We’re genuinely baffled. We’re become even more confused when the person who came to such a different conclusion claims to be a Christian. How is that possible? We assume it’s not. You can’t be a Christian and think like that, vote like that, or support that candidate! They’re clearly wrong. How can their faith have informed their view when your faith is what informed your view…and you have the OPPOSITE view? Are half the Christ-followers you know idiots, or could it be that everything isn’t as cut-and-dry as you think it is? Can we hold different political views and still be loyal to Jesus? Is that even possible? If so, how?

We might expect God to speak through a Bible verse, worship lyric, or sermon quote. These things feel sanctified, sacred, safe. But where else might we find the voice of God? What about a romance novel, superhero comic, R rated movie, or explicit song? Should we look for God in these places or avoid them altogether? Are there certain things God never speaks through? Is it possible for something to pull one person closer to God while pushing someone else away? How do you know when to look closer and when to look away?

Most of us aren’t great at stillness. We’re always on-the-go, multitasking, earbuds in, distractedly doing one thing while worrying about not having time for the next. A lot of us can’t stand silence. Even more of us can’t sit still. Our lives are busy and noisy, our minds even more so. Ever have someone nudge you and ask, “Did you hear me?” And you wanted to say, “yes”, but you were so distracted you didn’t even realize they were talking? What if God was speaking, but the pace and noise of our everyday lives prevents us from hearing Him? Could it be that God whispers more than He shouts? And if that’s true, what do those whispers sound like and how do we still our souls long enough to sense them?

If you’ve ever visited a place where you don’t speak the language, having a reliable interpreter is a lifesaver. You need someone to translate what’s being said into words you can understand.
But everyone’s who’s gotten a message through an interpreter has also wondered, “Is that really what the other person said?” Trusting someone to translate takes a lot of faith—because what if they get it wrong?
Then their mistake becomes your mistake. And what if they’re translating for God? Ever had someone tell you what God wants you to do and wondered, “How would they know?” How do you tell the difference between someone pushing their own agenda and someone trying to help you hear God’s voice for yourself?

Some people say the Bible is the ‘Word of God’; like it’s somehow His way of speaking to us. But it wasn’t written to us. It was written to people who lived a really long time ago, in another part of the world, and spoke different languages. And yet, some people read this ancient book and say things like, “that spoke to me” or “that was just for me”. What does that mean? How does God use all these old stories and sayings to guide us through our current situations? Does God say specific things to specific people through Scripture? Or is everyone just seeing what they want to see to justify doing whatever they want to do?

We all know stories or have seen documentaries about people who claim to have heard from God. Most of them weren’t just convinced God wanted them to know something, but DO something, and the ‘somethings’ are all over the place—adopt a baby, launch a non-profit, fight an addiction, pass a law, start a commune, or bomb a building. Most of us have our fair share of suspicion. Did God really tell these people to do these things? That can’t be true. But I guess it’s possible he said something to some of them. After all, the bible has stories about people hearing from God. How do you know if something is from God or not?

Everyone eventually asks themselves, “What do I do with my life?” And a lot of the cultural answers to this question don’t end up being all that satisfying. We all know people who have made lots of money, acquired lots of power, and had lots of sex, but feel hollow and unhappy. It turns out, humans aren’t content to simply be alive, we want something to live for. The obvious Christian answer might be, “Just live for God.” But, how? What does that mean? How do I channel who I am and how I’m wired into something that matters? Do you ever wish you could have something inside you that would lead and guide you to do what’s ultimately best for you? Interestingly, God had that very same idea. Everything after the Gospels in the New Testament is the story of God enlightening and empowering us to discover our true selves and partner with one another to bring heaven to earth. So, what was this big idea and how exactly is it supposed to work?

There are few things as painful as feeling like nobody gets you and there’s no one you can turn to. We are meant and made for relationships—with each other and with God. The people part can be difficult but is somewhat intuitive. But a lot of us don’t think of God as relational. And to be fair, through most of human history, He wasn’t. For the most part, people didn’t walk and talk with God. They connected with Him from a distance by carrying out various rules and rituals. God was present but not close, real but not relatable. That is until God picked a point in history and inserted himself into humanity. God closed the gap between us, not just by coming near to us, but by becoming one of us. And this mind-blowing move changed everything about everything…forever. This is the story of the Gospels, and it reframes everything that came before. But what exactly does that mean for us and our everyday lives?

Ever felt like there was something between you and someone else? Like something was off between you. Maybe you weren’t even sure what it was, but it was clear there was something there. Almost every relationship has these moments. But it wasn’t meant to be that way. Something happened in the story of humanity that got between us and each other, us and God, us and ourselves, God and His creation. Something went off course. Something got in the way. And our entire existence afterward has revolved around us trying to work through it or work around it. This is what the Old Testament is about. And when we see it through this lens, it reveals why so much of our lives and our world doesn’t work the way it should. The question is, what do we do about it?

Knowing where you came from brings into focus who you really are and how you got that way. Our culture is interested in this, maybe more than ever. When we meet people, we impulsively ask them where they’re from. We love movies that revolve around the origin story of a character. We map our family trees. We ship our spit off to companies to tell us the ancestry of our genetic code. When you open the Bible, the beginning of Scripture is about how we began. It’s our origin story. But maybe not in the way you might think. What does this ancient piece of poetry that opens the story of us and God tell us about the bigger picture of who we are and what we’re made for?

We’ve all seen stories of people doing things we thought were impossible. They made a massive change, turned their lives around, overcame an addiction, or overturned an entire industry. The reason we’re in awe of these people is that most seem to come from humble beginnings. We’re not impressed that they did something they ought to be able to do, we’re impressed they did something we weren’t sure anyone could do. What’s truly unbelievable is some people do it more than once. Are these just special people? Or do they know something we don’t? Can anyone become better, stronger, and more successful in any area or is that just an American myth? How are those with multiple successes doing it?

How can two people with similar skill sets look at the same situation and come to vastly different conclusions? It would make sense that both would have the same shot at success. But we’ve all seen prepared people fail, and those nobody would bet on succeed. Is it pure luck? Is it circumstantial? Or is there something happening on the inside of them that’s influencing what’s happening on the outside of them. We’re told that the mind is pretty powerful. Is that just something people say? How much does outlook effect outcomes? How much are our experiences impacted by our expectations? And if so, can you change yours?

The plot of most inspirational stories boils down to someone with everything stacked against them, who, through sheer will and determination, conquer seemingly insurmountable odds & rise to the top. We love the self-made success story. There’s just one catch: that’s not really how it works. Noone who survives, overcomes, or achieves anything unbelievable does so by themselves. We’re social creatures, significantly shaped by our surroundings. Could what’s holding you back be more of a “who” than a “what”? How much do the people you do life alongside determine what kind of life you end up living?

When there’s something we can’t seem to make ourselves do or stick to, we assume it’s because we lack inspiration. We go on the hunt for an uplifting story, an encouraging word, or motivational quote to get us going. But all of us have things we feel inspired to do but never quite get around to. Is it that we don’t want it bad enough, aren’t focused, or don’t quite see its significance? But some of what we’d argue is most important, we still can’t seem to prioritize. So, what’s the problem? Is it that we need more or different inspiration? Is that we need a better, more compelling “why”? Or is there another ingredient we might be missing? What are successful people not telling us? Is there a magic recipe for resilience? If so, what is it?

Almost everyone’s heard the statement, “God is love.” If that’s true, why do so many of His followers seem so unloving? How important is it to reflect the god you believe in? Are most Christians just hypocrites, or are they a reflection of who they think God is—condescending, self-protecting, and punishing? Is Christianity about you living a certain way or you getting everyone else to live a certain way? Some people say becoming a Christian changes everything. Does it? How? Are Christians supposed to live like Jesus or is it more about praying a prayer to get into heaven? How does trust in Jesus affect how you treat other people? Should it?

Christians are nice enough, as long as you fall in line, fit the mold, and don’t ask too many questions. But if you have your doubts or disagree with someone in authority, you’re out. Does having faith mean playing along with everything you’re told & keeping your mouth shut? Is God as annoyed with our lack of certainty as other Christians seem to be? Is what you say you believe more important than how you behave? Is it possible for a thriving spiritual community to be full of people who aren’t on the same page?

We get that it’s a good thing to be a giver. Maybe generosity is even a goal of yours. But where do you draw what lines? If you gave everything away—you’d end up naked and penniless, living on the streets. That can’t be what God wants. You don’t want to be a miser either. How do you know what to give and what to keep? There are needs and needy people everywhere. What do you say YES and NO to? How do you use what you’ve got wisely, not wastefully? How do you pursue selflessness without starving? Will you eventually just arrive at a certain sweet spot, or is this an area you’re going to have to constantly wrestle with?

Most of us view ourselves as relatively ethical people, especially those of us who call ourselves Christians. I mean—we don’t deliberately do anything that bad. And yet, all through Scripture—God’s desire doesn’t seem to be to just get us to avoid doing the wrong things, but to proactively do the right things. He tells us that not doing a good thing we know we ought to do is sin. Then he goes as far as saying not giving regularly is the equivalent of stealing—which sounds sort of shocking. Was he serious? What did he mean by that? What would you do if you suddenly realized you’d stolen something unintentionally? What if you’d done it more than once?

Part of growing up is getting a job. Everyone’s eventually got to think about how they’re going to make money. You’ve got to pay rent and buy groceries, clothes, and a car. Then there’s insurance, utilities, subscriptions, and shampoo. And savings, obviously. If there’s anything left after, you can finally have a little fun—a vacation, an upgrade, dessert. The more you make, the more you get to move from simply meeting your NEEDS to grabbing hold of your WANTS. And that’s what we’re all working for. Is that enough though? Is getting what you want all there is? Does is work? Is it fulfilling? What else is there? What does God have to say about the point of making money and do we really care?

If you were to ask all your neighbors for the first thing they think of when they hear the word “Christian”, how much you want to bet “hypocrite” comes up more than once? That stings a bit.
But is it an incorrect assessment? And if it is, are you contributing to or countering it? A lot of people call themselves Christians, but how many actually live like one? What does it mean to fully follow Christ?
Which of his instructions—on everything from ethics to economics—are we tempted not to take seriously? And what’s the cost of doing so—for us, our families, and our communities?

Kids complicate relationships. Some of us aren’t sure we want to have them. Some of us accidentally had them. Some of us inherited them. Some of us are absolutely obsessed with them. Maybe you thought you met the love of your life, but then you had a kid. You don’t want to say you love them more, but you definitely love them differently. You’d sacrifice anything for them. And you have. Including your health, your sense of self, and every ounce of romance remaining in your relationship. Is that just how it works? Or are we doing it wrong?

Falling in love with someone is the easy part. Learning to live with someone is the hard part. All romance starts with a spark of chemistry, but over time, some couples really complement one another, and others seem to want to kill each other. Is it just dumb luck? What separates those that crumble after seven months from those who end up celebrating seventy years? It’s either a complete fluke or they’ve figured something out. And since nobody looks forward to starting over again, what could we learn from them?

Like it or not, relationships define us. But it’s in different ways for different people. Some of us are preoccupied with finding our person. Some of us are wondering if the person we’re with is worth staying with. And others of us are actively trying to avoid being pinned down by anyone. What we all do have in common is we don’t want to do life alone or be stuck in a bad relationship. But are you being unrealistic? Does what you want even exist? And if it does, how do you find it? How do you know when you’ve found it? And how do you hang on to it once you have?

Sex has never been more openly talked about or easily accessible. We’ve got apps for hook ups, websites designed to help us have affairs, and endless pornography at our fingertips. Plus, sex is dripping from our music and movies; cleaver ads and clickbait articles. Words like “thirsty” “ghosted” & “cuffing” are all part of our cultural vocabulary. And yet, for as free as we all seem to be, fewer people report having and enjoying sex than ever before. How can that be? What do we all need to do to have more and better sex?

Ever known someone who was almost impossible to read—one minute you’re best friends, and the next they won’t even return a text? It was hard to tell if they wanted to hang out or not. They’d excitedly make plans. Then randomly break plans. No one’s ever made you feel more special and then instantly unsure of yourself. They’d pull you close and then immediately push you away. Maybe you’ve been told you’re like this. You hate being alone, but it’s hard to shake the sense that you’re too damaged, annoying, and in the way to experience anything but rejection. Are comfortable, stable connections even possible for you, or is every relationship an unpredictable roller coaster?

Ever been around someone who came off a little calloused? They were focused and reliable, but you could never seem to get below the surface. You think they liked you. They never told you, but they did a lot for you. In fact, they never really slowed down. They always struck you as strong and confident. Sometimes you imagine they don’t need anything or anyone. You’ve joked, “It’s like being friends with a robot.” Maybe you’re a little bit like this. You like sharing life with people as long as you don’t have to share your feelings with them. Something about that just doesn’t seem safe. But are you missing something by never fully revealing what’s going on inside you to those around you? What might happen if you did?

Ever been in a relationship with someone who came off a little clingy—always needing to know where you were, what you were doing, what you were thinking, how you were feeling? They seemed to read into every look, gesture, text, and conversation. They clearly cared about you, but always acted as if they were afraid to hurt, frustrate, or lose you. Maybe you’re this person. How do we end up this way? Is it possible to trade your relational anxiety for a sense of confidence in the midst of closeness?
Ever struck by how confident, connected, & comfortable certain people seem, and think to yourself, “That’s not how my life & relationships feel at all. Are they really as close & happy as they appear, or is it all for show? And if they are, why aren’t I?” Is there something wrong with you? And if so, what & why? Are you destined to live a life of disconnection, or can you experience the closeness you crave?

There’s a difference between looking at a picture the Mona Lisa and standing in the Louvre alongside others. There’s a difference between a video of a meteor shower on youtube and looking up at the night sky to experience it yourself. There’s a difference between reading about travel and getting on a plane. Nothing can be truly known through observation, only through participation. The magi knew the Messiah was born, but they wanted to experience it. Similarly, everyone observes Christmas, but how are you participating in the Christmas

Myrrh was from a plant that had various uses, but primary ones were for healing wounds and embalming the dead. While this may seem like an odd baby gift, it was symbolic of the role Jesus would play as a prophet who would say and do things that would create tension – ultimately leading to his death. Jesus’ actions, teachings, and way of living always stirred up controversy, because he gave voice to the silenced, healing to the sick, valued the outcast, and challenged the comfortable. The gift of myrrh was an ancient way of saying; “buckle up – it’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

Frankincense was burned as incense in a temple, a way to shield the priest from the direct presence of God. When the magi gave this gift, it was symbolic of Jesus becoming our High Priest; no longer a distant human surrounded by ritual and untouchable by the masses, but a baby, born in a manger and surrounded by both family and strangers alike. Through the vulnerability of Christ, we can be fully vulnerable in our relationship with God.

Gold has always been linked to royalty; the ultimate symbol of kings. So when the Magi brought gold to honor Jesus, they were proclaiming him king. King Herod was “disturbed” when he heard about this newborn king of the Jews, and Matthew tells us that all Jerusalem was disturbed also. Herod was paranoid about anyone taking power from him or challenging his throne, but he couldn’t even begin to imagine that Jesus was not only king of the Jews, but ultimately the King of Kings. While we can all agree that Herod was evil in many ways, he was right in understanding that the arrival of this new King would change everything.

Like it or not, the way we approach money is way more emotional than it is logical. A lot
of our budgeting is an attempt to access one feeling or avoiding another. We think—“If I lease this, I’ll look good.”
"If I save that, I’ll feel secure.” “If I invest here, I’ll have influence.” We don’t all have the same impulses, but we are
motivated by the same mechanism: fear. We’re afraid if we took advice from God about money, He’d eventually
ask us to give in ways that threaten our sense of security. And He probably will. So why would listening be worth it?

Ever looked at something someone bought & thought—I would never pay that for that! Different people value things differently. So, why do you spend the way you do on what you do? Most of us use
our resources to reinforce our identity. We put money into what we think will help us be (or at least be seen as)
who we want to be. And while it’s fine to aim our finances in different directions, all spending isn’t equally satisfying. Jesus told his followers to leverage their resources in ways that maximized fulfillment & minimized regret. But how?

We all develop various rhythms & routines to hold our lives together. Some we design, others happen by default. In short—We all have certain things we do a certain way. A lot of things just work better when you do them in particular order—like putting on socks BEFORE shoes, or buying a house BEFORE you move in. These things seem ridiculously obvious (to most of us). And the reason the Universe is like this is that God is like this. And that brings up a pretty important question: Could the reason we don’t feel blessed be because we’re living our lives or organizing our resources in the wrong order? And if so, what do we do about it?
What pops into your head when you hear the word “blessed”? Maybe a social media post of someone enjoying something expensive or exclusive? Is that the best Biblical definition? When Jesus spoke about being blessed, he outlined circumstances & scenarios most of us actively avoid. He acted as if it had less to do with how much you have than how well you live. What did He mean by that?

Ever suddenly realize someone in your family doesn’t share your core values? You thought everyone was on the same page, but it turns out, you weren’t. Or maybe you got this vision of the kind of family you want to be—so you share it with them & set goals & everyone nods in agreement, but as time drags on,
nothing really changes. Why is that? Why do our default settings consistently overpower our dreams? How do we move from WHERE we are toward WHO we want to be—together? Is it possible to change your family dynamics?
If we throw ourselves into helping our family flourish—we draw out & cultivate the uniqueness of each person, unite around a common vision, schedule first what we value most, and everyone’s soaring toward wholistic health—what else is there? Is there a bigger purpose to family than simply making sure
its members are somewhat emotionally, relationally & financially stable? Does our family have any responsibility to other families, or to our overall community? Does a healthy family have a larger purpose, or is it an end unto itself?

A lot of our families feel like they’re moving in a million different directions, all at once.
In a noble effort to support each other’s individual interests, goals, and dreams; we shuttle everyone around town, eat on the run, and reshuffle schedules so everyone can go & be & do whatever they want. Which is amazing.
But it invites an interesting question: Is a family about anything more than the individual success & happiness of
its members, or is there a bigger, deeper, broader reason God puts us together? And if there is—What is it?

We love seeing members of our family succeed. And every family has certain things
they celebrate more than others. In some—it’s excelling in academics or athletics; in others—maybe it’s an entrepreneurial mindset or extroverted personality. It’s great if you fit the mold, but what if you don’t? Ever get
the feeling you’ll never be good at anything your family values? What then? Do you walk away from them &
make your own way? Is that the mark of maturity—not needing anybody? Why would God put YOU with THEM?

Our family is who we came from. And for a lot of us, it’s also who we’re running from.
We don’t want who they are to limit who we can be. Sometimes the people you expected too have your back feel more like they’re in your way. Family is supposed to love you for you & support whatever you want to do, right?
We think—If I had a good family, they’d make me happy, celebrate me, resource me, and ask nothing of me.
Is that true? What if yours isn’t like that? What is the point of family? Do you have to leave them to find yourself?
If you were to imagine what’s most important to God, beauty probably wouldn’t make the list. Dostoevsky said beauty will save the world. Jesus seemed to agree. What does that mean? Why would Jesus assign so much power & priority to something most of us see as surfacy? Could it be we don’t understand God, or have we incorrectly defined beauty? What if it’s a bit of both? What if beauty can save the world? How would that work?
A lot of people think the point of life is to try to be a good person. But what does that mean? Is it about DOING the right things, or BELIEVING the right way? And how do we know what’s right? Jesus argued with people He believed were right, accusing them of not being good. So, they’re not the same? Jesus taught one was more important than the other, the result of which got Him killed and saved the world. What was it?
Most people want to be told the truth. But what does that word even mean anymore? Is it all relative? We heard—Just live YOUR truth. Is there such a thing as THE truth? If so, where does it come from and how do we measure it? Jesus was asked these same questions and His answer is nothing short of astounding.
When someone hurts us, our impulse is to get them back. We want to get even because even feels fair. But it doesn’t end up feeling good. In fact, it doesn’t end at all. We get sucked into a never-ending cycle of retaliation. Jesus did His best to give grace to those who treated Him the worst. What made Him think this counter-intuitive strategy would make a difference? And why did He encourage us to do the same?
The way we approach a conversation transforms what we get out of that conversation. This is true with other people, but it’s also true with God. Most of us passively learn to pray by mimicking the religious figures around us. We can fall into patterns of talking with God that feel formulaic and leave us wondering about their effectiveness. Are there ways of talking with God that are better than others? If so, what are they?
We talk to each other about each other. It’s a natural and normal part of being a social creature. At times it’s helpful to process with someone about how to deal with someone else. At other times, talking about someone becomes a substitute for talking to them. In an effort to avoid conflict, many of us find ourselves talking more behind people’s backs than we do to their face. We attempt to work out our frustrations with everyone but the one they’re with. It rarely works out well. Why do we do this? How do we stop? What other options are there?
We all develop our own particular way of communicating. We don’t necessarily set out to do it, it just sort of happens. We not only pick up words, phrases, body language, but also tone, volume, and intensity from the people we’re raised by and the circles we run in. The way we say things is as impactful as what it is we’re saying. And different people prefer to be communicated with in different ways. How do we know if we’re communicating in a way that’s working for the people around us? Are they hearing what we’re trying to say, or something else altogether?
It’s Kid Take Over Sunday! We’re so excited for you to be a part of this unique Sunday Experience as we show you all the fun we got up to during Xtreme Week, and dive deeper into the lessons we learned.

All of us are on the lookout for a little bit of wisdom; a way to make the most of our relationships, work, life, circumstances and surroundings. Interestingly, in the most famous sermon of all time, Jesus spoke directly to these things—in surprising new ways. What exactly did he mean by it? And what was he hoping we would do with it? Is it possible to truly trust Jesus without living the way he taught? What if we allowed Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount to move beyond a something that simply sounds familiar to something that realigns the way we approach everything.

Did you know everyone talks to themselves? We all have an inner dialogue, debating issues in the back of our minds at all times. Why is that? Where does it come from? Why is it so loud and convincing? What do you do if your inner voice is negative, angry, judgmental, or self-loathing? Is there a way to override or uproot it? How?

Jesus appeared to several people who knew him really well right after being raised from the dead, but no one seems to recognize him. What an odd detail. Why is that? And what might the answer reveal to us about the reasons we find it so difficult to fully embrace God’s grace? When most of us in the modern West think of Christmas, our first thought is usually something connected to indoor trees, twinkle lights, shopping sprees & sugar cookies. But in the ancient East, this season was one of Advent. It’s an old word with Latin origins that we don’t really use much anymore. It means “coming”. It was about anticipating the anniversary of the moment Divinity made itself know to humanity in the most earth-shattering, story-changing, category-exploding of ways. It reminded the people of God to turn down the volume on the chaos of life & prepare their hearts & minds for God to reengage their stories in surprising new ways with a fresh sense of Hope, Peace, Joy & Love.
Have you noticed that we can get fixated on wishing for a time in our past when we were happy, or believing that if we can finally just get that thing in the future, we'll finally be happy? What if our perspective is the thing holding us back from real gratitude?
How many times a day do you say "Thanks"? Probably a lot. But do you mean it? Why is it so hard for us to be really, truly grateful? Why is it so easy to grow frustrated with what we have, disappointed in those around us, and discouraged about where we’re at in our lives. We all want to be thankful, so why do tend to have No Thanks?
We all have a desire to be right, to win. But it seems like Jesus was more concerned with us loving those we disagree with than proving we are right. So as Christ followers are we willing to sacrifice our need to be right for following the example of Jesus?
Most parents (leaders or mentors) tend to error on one side of over-connecting OR over-correcting. We become a dictator or a best friend, neither of which serve those we’re raising all that well.
It’s hard to mature without the right mentoring. INSTRUCTING someone to DO & MENTORING them to BE are two very different things. So what do we do?
Today, the culture around us often pulls us in the opposite direction we want to go. And it’s hard not to give in. How do we seize control of our stories? And how do we empower those around us to take the same mature steps?
What does it look like to build a healthy relational dynamic that actually rubs off on your kids? Find out how. Join us Sunday as we wrestle through these questions together as we begin #FamilyMonth
There are certain bits of our story we’d all prefer to bury. But what if someone needs to hear how you got here, what you went through, what it cost you? What if someone else’s salvation is somehow connected to your storytelling? — Join us Sunday as we wrestle through these questions together in final installment of our #StorylineSeries.
When we don’t get what we want, we tend to assume it’s because God messed up, life is out of balance. But what if not getting what we want is God’s way of gifting us Grace?
We all have a story, and at the same time we all are a story. When we read our past well, it guides us as we co-author our future with God. When we can be honest about our experiences, we discover our strengths. When we tell our story, we tell the greatest story.
