You know the saying. The cream rises to the top? There are some key members of the Dj and collector community that get recognized more and more as time goes on. Not only for their knowledge about electronic music and their taste in tunes but also their no-frills attitude and focus on DJing as a whole. Estimulo is one of those handful. A former member of the futura event agency and DJ crew from Berlin with a desire to also release music as a label owner with Mixomat Recordings. Heavily passionate about radio since a being young child has led to many variations of shows dedicated to the music he supports and follows. Most recently, a weekly Radio Show (EstimuloShow @ mixomat.org since 2007, also on Cashmere Radio since 2017) kept him busy. Having played many key clubs throughout Europe while sharing the nightly bills with a who's who's list of some of the best underground names in house and techno isn't a surprise. As a DJ, Estimulo is more in tune with the deeper and soulful side of things. He approaches mixing uniquely with no pre-planned mixes favoring an expression of honesty and desire to play what he wants versus a goal of perfect but often stale mixing. Lately, he has taken to many streaming platforms DJing live with other hardcore music aficionados in marathon long mixing sessions. To say Estimulo contributes to every facet of the electronic music community would be an understatement. Search out some recent interviews with him to get more in depth with his extensive background and future plans. With some 30 years' worth of experience, knee deep into the sound of the underground, you can expect his selections to impress even the die-hards. We are pleased to present a 2 part mix for the latest Chubby podcast with Estimulo on the wheels of steel.

Steven Tang on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/obsoletemusictechnology

@emphasisrecordings

There aren't too many names who balance the Detroit and Chicago sounds with as many quality releases as Steven Tang has. Over the past 25 years, it seems that every EP he has put his name on earns hardcore devoted fans. Its a wonder why he isn't more well known then he should be. Bridging the 2nd generation Detroit producers to the new millennium, you wont find a much more beloved producer of the futuristic Detroit sound. Steven started up Emphasis Recordings in 1998. With just under 20 releases in 24 years, one may think the label isnt that productive but that is also the speed in which Steven puts out his own music as well. Quality being most important to Steven. In 2013 Steven landed on the Smallville label with his first full length album called "Disconnect To Connect" to rave reviews. A little more polished and acid sounding then his own labels' music but still representing a great house and techno balance. Steven is pretty low key these days. As Covid hopefully lets up we hope to see more dj gig's in the near future with him. A blind purchase each time you see his name, we hope to see some new music from Steven in 2022 and 2023

The very well-respected and talented producer Deep88, doesn't need or value much of an introduction. Being the founder of labels like "12Records", "Juice Records" and "What About This Love" speaks enough on their own. It seems like everything he is involved in is top notch with a great understanding and respect for the history of Italo disco and deep house music. Owain K (Innate) is a name that is tied to quality. One of those underground heroes who you trust to bring you the goods and take you on a true trip.

Whether as a DJ or a Producer, the experience and knowledge of Electronic music and its past manifests itself into his own next level contributions. This latest Chubby! Mix has Owain in his element for a 75 minute foray into deep house and techno music.

As a producer, he goes back some 15+ years with releases on a range of labels including Dessous, Outland Records, 200 and We're Going Deep among others. His talent for smooth sounds in all he does might just be his trademark. This certainly translates to his DJing. Owain has made his bones up and down the UK with trips into Europe as well. Although Bristol is his home turf, he also has solid Welsh roots having lived and thrown parties in Cardiff over the last 2 decades.

Back in 2014, he started a blog which has turned into a label with www.inn8.net.

This mix is a euphoric trip into deep house, ambient techno, some slight Detroit action and a lot of melodic soul. The perfect armchair listen no doubt but sure to work on a deep dancefloor also.

Dawn Again (Nick Verwey), an in-demand producer with slew of releases the last decade on strong labels like Porn Wax, Roam Recordings, Blind Jacks Journey and Houseworx, the demand is equally as great for his djing abilities. Chubby! is happy to secure his latest for our series. A vinyl enthusiast and raised as a house-head, his sets range from disco, deep house to techno and back again. Inspired by the likes of DJ Sprinkles, Move D, Trinidadian Deep, Joy Parties and spending long hours digging in forgotten bargain bins. His record choices tend to on the warmer grooves yet still challenge the listeners equally, Moving the mind and the feet thru the soul is his goal. This mix is a great example of his ability to do just that.

@chicago-skyway

Long-time Chicago native and house champion Chicago Skyway is the latest welcomed artist for the Chubby! Podcast.

Sean Hernandez has been producing for the past near 15 years releasing EP's on some of the best underground labels around. He has multiple releases on the iconic label M>O>S Recordings, the highly-regarded Uzuri, Emphasis and Eargasmic labels among others.. But these fruitful years were first supported by being a fan of the music for another 15 years prior to writing his own. A solid foundation of learning the history of the genre while being an avid collector and DJ is in our eyes, the best way to come up. Learn what has been done so you have something to say. And to find the inspiration to express your own point of view. Sean has earned his stripes like that. Naturally, being a fan of house and techno will take root and express themselves through the personality of the producer. Chicago Skyway is that outlet's name. The music is energetic, infectious and full of treated house sophistication. A party music for the future that's balanced with the origins of the classics. Sean Hernandez is that ideal balance of being a honed Dj and producer to make an out of the podcast! Here is an example of what he's all about...

Black Jazz Consortium - Blessings Atjazz feat. Ernesto - Put It On (Osunlade Club Mix) Efde - CMP135 (Original Mix) Skymark - Find a Place in This Crazy World (Ron Trent Mix) Kyle Hall - 4wrd Motion Chateau Flight - Instant Replay Jimpster - Solitude Hipnotic - Naima (Ian O'Brien Remix) Stefan Ringer - SO Aybee - A Novel Gesture Alton Miller - One Way Back

  23. Jaime Read - Summer... the 2nd time (Vinyl underground)

Growing up in UK during the middle of the Acid House craze late 80's, Jaime Read was influenced by the early Chicago, Detroit and New York sounds which his sister would play. The 'Capital' rap show with Mike Allen was instrumental in showing Jaime some of the hottest underground sounds like Cybotron 'R9' & Jam on it by Newcleus mixed with now classic hip hop. Listening to pirate radio stations like 'Friends FM', 'Fantasy', and his personal favourite 'Smart Boys FM' were instrumental in his early days. It was only inevitable that when he got his first bit of equipment himself, Jaime had to have a go at it himself. As the mid-90s moved on, Jaime first released music on strong labels like 10th Planet under the name Wookie as well as his first full length release on Fragmented Records named 'The End of the Beginning'. Around that time, Jaime introduced his own 'Push to Shove' imprint releasing under the name LHAS inc. for which he was a founding member of with Felix Dickinson.

Some say Jaime is the ideal mix between house and techno styles. The perfect blend of two of the most beloved versions of dance music. With nearly 30 releases under this name (and some that are not credited to Jaime - such as the Joe Lewis Story), each release has hit near legendary status. Key releases like the 2010 EP named 'Never the Future' on Elektrosouls Recordings or the unique 'On the Beaches' on the revered Golf Channel label in 2015 which had Jaime showing his versatility with some unique styles. In the past 5 years Jaime's many of his classic material has been reissued like the most recent 'Hevalo 2021 Edition' on Push to Shove. His last all-new material found its way to the Vinyl Underground label just last year simply named 'EP'. The future is looking bright as Jaime assures us that he has lots of new material ready to be released so make sure you follow his Bandcamp page.  You can trust anything Jaime is involved will be pure class. Jaime doesn't get as many opportunities to DJ as some others but if you get a chance to hear him out you are in for a treat. He is one of the UK's best DJ's you never heard of and always rocks a party!!! (As this mix clearly does!). We are glad to have Jaime make a Chubby! podcast exclusive mix for us. This one is guaranteed to get you dancing! It pays respect to some classy sounds of the past while working up some newer and lesser-known futuristic track vibes. Masterfully mixed, it will have you surfing on sine waves.

Kosta Athanassiadis, known professionally as XDB, has grown a well-respected career through a slew of fantastic releases on well admired labels for the past 15 years. Of Greek descent but born and raised in Germany, Kosta has the background and experience to be a trusted figure whether making music or chosing music as a dj.

Having worked in record stores and radio while fine tuning his djing skills thru the 1990s, a new creative seed grew - Kosta started to make his own productions. This led to starting up his own label named Metrolux in 2006 where his music was featured front and center. Quality over quantity was a must for the output of the label and his own release schedule. His debut ‘Jackintosh EP’ and the following ‘Descap EP’ made quite the impression for those that heard them. From there, he's been popping up on some of the most praised labels in electronic music such as Sistrum, Harbour City Sorrow, Echocord, Ferox as well as Francois Kevorkian's legendary Wave Music label.

His music has been described as post-Detroit but firmly european made and devoid of any one genre. A cornicopia of influences that help Kosta's music stand out in a very competitive field. As a remixer, his credits list is long and impressive. This demand from his peers is perhaps the best example that validates his talent. 2020 was a landmark year for Kosta which saw his first full length album that led to rave reviews worldwide. Personality wise, Kosta is low-key letting his music do the talking. His integrity never in doubt and love for electronic music is clear. Keeping his ear to the ground while enjoying his vast vinyl collection. For listeners, it is a true treat hearing Kosta elect tracks for the occasion when he is the dj. Technically and creatively, one of the best whose name is constantly in demand for sets and new music. Whether making new music, remixing or djing, Kosta Athanassiadiska aka XDB is one to follow.

@alexattias

We are delighted to present our special host for 083; Visions Inc. label co-founder, DJ/Producer, and vibes aficionado Alex Attias. He's got a special ear for Jazz, House, Funk, and more; with a career spanning back to the late 80s controlling dancefloors. It was during these years and the early 90s that he DJ'd regularly in Lausanne, Switzerland; eventually establishing himself as one Switzerland's most respected DJs with his own exclusive weekly night, The Jackals. From there much success continued in Alex's legacy with several singles, remixes, collaborations, label appearances with a dynamic range of genres and artists. He's worked with artists from Sun Ra and Ennio Morricone to Laurent Garnier, Roni Size, and Madlib, and that's just a small few; so

It was only natural that he have an exclusive label, and in 1999, he and his brother Stephane Attias established the record label Visions Inc., jointly in London, UK and Switzerland. Aptly named, Visions Inc provides a platform where Deep House, Jazz, Breakbeat, Soul- the Organic and the Electronic exist as one Deep Family.

The label made a deep vision promptly with its first release, the excellent Future Jazz EP, produced by Alex under his Mustang alias. Visions Inc continued to establish its name and vision in the 2000s as a successful label - From 1999 to 2007, Visions Inc released music from Alex(Freedom Soundz) and his brother Stephane Attias, Plutonia (with Dego), Nanami Togarishi, Domu, and Neroli Records founder Volcov among others. Expansion also naturally occurred during this time leading to the creation of sub labels and party nights Freedom Soundz and LillyGood Party! respectively. For a few years dedication was placed to both these labels and party nights as Visions Inc didn't release directly during this period. 2017 saw the transition of Lillygood Party! from not only a party night, but sublabel of Visions Inc., dedicated to reissuing fully licensed edits Stephane & Alex made in rare Jazz, Disco, House and any other groovy stuff, several of which they played at the famous and ongoing Lillygood party events. In addition, Visions Inc returned strong with releases from some of the best in Deep House including: Alex Attias himself, Anthony Nicholson, Trinidadian Deep, Lars Bartkhun, Javonntte, Patrice Scott, Hanna, and Kai Alce just to give an idea of the vast quality this label has curated recently, as Visions Inc, continues keep the standard high for over 20 years strong. Alex Attias's taste and demand is still as high as ever, as when it comes to moving the crowd with both vintage and new, he is always clever. He is currently working on collaborative projects with BBE to unearth even more Deep Soul history with the volume 2 of his compilation ...you can expect a taste of this, Deep House, Jazz, and more Deep Vibes so tune into Vol.83 and let Alex Attias take your mind and soul on a ride.

Patrice Scott on Facebook: www.facebook.com/PatriceScottSistrum

@p-scott

Patrice Scott’s roots in the Detroit music scene go a long way back. At the age of just 11 he lived down the road from early DJ group Direct Drive and it was at these block parties that Scott decided that this is what he wanted to do. That his inspiration should be so deeply rooted in live music and the dance floor environment makes sense – he has become known as one of the most innovative and dynamic club DJs from the Motor City with his own deep and textured house & techno sound.

In those early days of the Detroit techno scene Patrice was exposed to legendary artist and disc jockeys like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills as well as radio personality The Electrifying Mojo. Patrice also was profoundly inspired by the Chicago Sounds of Larry Heard, Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles a few hundred miles west. Patrice’s music reflects much of the rich sound palette of deep house and techno from the 1990’s but combines this with a sense of constant innovation which depends less on trends and fashions and more on Scott’s own passion for seeking out an otherworldliness in music.

@miruga

The real name is Yoshiki Tsuchiya.. and he is from Suzaka City, Nagano, Japan. Miruga is man accustomed to remaining in the background like a "Lentigo". He follow's the Underground Deep House Scene like a little shadow maybe because he still believes "DJ must be like a Lentigo." His main policy is a non-musician style. It is true that he have produced music & released some music. But, please bring back to memory of late 70's punk scene. Were there any musician's at that scene? For sure, every punk rockers played their instruments, but It is an entirely different matter than "Was It Music that they played?" This is still no small issue for him. Because an artist must have something to tell someone about something. So he wants to say that there is no importance on skill as compared to "soul & spirit". The importance of expression is still on enthusiasm for expression. He still loves the music made by strong enthusiasm whatever the level of performing technique or skill. So, He loves the music rooted from Chicago & Detroit deeply. He knows one big thing " Soul Is Everything". Enjoy my love for the music ...

Carlo Troja aka Don Carlos hails from Varese, in the North of Italy, and has been active as a DJ from the late 70's. He debuted as a producer towards the end of the 80's with the single 'Alone' on Calypso Records (IMRA), which became one of the cult tracks of the international Deep House scene. His productions have always mixed House rhythms with afro-american jazz sounds, verging sometime towards disco, sometime towards progressive house or electronic soul. In 1992 IRMA USA released his first album 'Mediterraneo', followed in 1993 by the Montego Bay project, produced together with Stefano Tirone (S-Tone Inc.), also on IRMA. He then released some singles on the Chicago based label Guidance under the Aquanauts moniker. He also reached the UK charts with the hit ‘You Make Me Feel’, sung by Byron Stingley, cover of the cult song by Sylvester. In 2000 he released a single on Erik Morillo's Subliminal Soul label and played highly acclaimed gigs at Ministry of Sound and Turnmills in London. In 2002 he released his third album ‘Music in My Mind’ featuring top guest vocalists like Kim Mazelle, Michelle Weeks, Taka Boom and Kevin Bryant. Following two mixed compilations ('Cafe De Paris Saint Tropez' and 'DJ Set') in 2004 IRMA released a collection of his 90's productions titled 'Mediterraneo', like his debut US album.

Mark Grusane on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/markgrusaneofficial

@mark-grusane

1st it’s the People, 2nd it’s the Atmosphere, 3rd it’s the Music, and lastly it’s Presentation. Mark Grusane is a favorite among crowds with eclectic musical taste that party long and hard.

Former co-owner of Mr Peabody Records in Chicago, DJ Mark Grusane has a strong history and knowledge of DJing and Dancefloor culture while being an important go-to-guy for selections amongst a vast pool of international DJ's, Compilers, and Record Labels. Just a little research will instantly show you his influence on DJ Culture, Record Collecting & Digging.

Growing up in Chicago during the early 80’s, Mark - with the help of his older brother - started collecting records and DJing from his pre-teens. During high school he listened to WBMX radio mixes and was producing house tracks inside empty classrooms with his friends during lunch period. By the time Mark was a young adult having music everyone knew and liked was not good enough anymore and so he entered the endless world of searching and seeking music he had yet to discover and his music habits soon reached a level deemed as obsessive. To balance his spending habit, he found himself selling music to older peers, stores and DJs in order to afford more records for himself. This finally lead him into founding Mr. Peabody Records with Mike Cole a fellow fanatic, in 2004, aiming to become a world class resource for all genres of obscure music and indeed Mr Peabody Records became a destination point for many DJ's and Music Lovers. Sadly, the brick and mortar store closed shop in 2012. However we’re lucky Mark still collects and continues to play music to dancers and clubbers around the world.

His style is derived from his unique persona, many years of collecting dance music and knowing how to move people with it. Although totally capable, Mark isn't your typical cookie cutter style DJ. He has his own signature way of presenting records with a focus to play quality, obscure, heart pounding, "Make You Get Up And Move” music.

Allstarr Motomusic on Facebook: www.facebook.com/georgios.boutopoulos

Bookings: www.nakamabookings.com/allstarr-motomusic

@deepartsounds www.deepartsounds.net

George BTP Aka Allstarr Motomusic, (also known as Dan Piu and Zarenzeit)is the founder and CEO of deepArtSounds. As a child, George’s favorite toys were cassette tapes. His older sister’s interest in Disco music also played an important part on his ongoing love for soulful dance music. By 1987, he was influenced by the legendary 'Flamingo' Disco club in Zurich, which it possibly was one of the first European clubs dedicated purely to House music. From that year, George begun to buy vinyl records and today he is well known for his in-depth background and huge knowledge of House & Disco music. George's record collection is extensive with well over 20'000 records to show for. By the late 80´s, already known as a collector on the 'vinyl scene', he started deejaying at different clubs in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Encouraged by the success as a resident DJ in the hottest Zürich clubs ‘2. Akt’ and ‘Toni Molkerei’, he also started to produce his own tracks on his self-founded labels 'No Acting Vibes' and 'Moto Music'. By using a variety of analogue synthesizers and analogue effects, Dan Piu productions were known for its pure and warm sounds. 'The Shine EP' released in 1996, was followed by the 'Limitless Expanses EP', the 'Innercity Terror EP' and the 'Quenchy EP'. These were not only the result of his passion for working with machines, but also a praise of recognized DJ's (Examples such as; Freddy Fresh, Terry Hunter, Jeff Mills, Todd Sines & Carl Craig) who included George’s productions on their Top Charts. In 2003, he decided to close his labels. It was obvious, the analogue sound of Moto Music and the live arrangement character were no longer adequate to the new digital world which became a big boost by that time. Years later in 2006, he created 'deepArtSounds' (a mix-podcast platform for local DJ’s). In 2011, alongside Okan Akpinar and his former Label partner Roberto Pistolese, he launched deepArtSounds as a vinyl label, releasing deep and soulful house music by loads of international artists, as well as his own productions under the Project Name 'Allstarr Motomusic'. In 2014 he contributed with his song 'Little Trinidadian Girl' on Ernie's Top Label Minuendo. One year later in 2015, his debut EP 'Beauty & Simplicity Vol. 1' was released on 'Deep Explorer'. Very quickly it found the recognition of one of his musically idols: Ron Trent, who also released under his label later on, as well as other renowned producers as Glenn Underground and Anthony Nicholson, among others. George is undoubtedly a sound aesthete. His sets are particularly emphasised by long mixes and quick changes through several music styles. They burst with energy and personality and are aimed at the dancefloor without losing sight of their fundamental sound values. George has played since the early 90´s at festivals and clubs such as Rohstofflager, Toni Molkerei, Hive, Limmathaus, Streetparade, Club Q, 2. Akt and 4. Akt. Talking about his latest productions, his recent albums 'Black Inside' as Zarenzeit on deepArtSounds and 'Living in Fears' as Dan Piu on the nice Cartulis Label, underscore his ambitions in the electronic music scene. There will be soon a few Allstarr Motomusic releases on labels like TH Pressing & Bucketrounds. Also a Mini Album on the well known Deep Explorer Label with his 'Beauty & Simplicity Vol. 2' that features the smooth vocals from Sarigna Bonfà and a C.V.O. Remix by Glenn Underground. He recently has finished an all new Album together with Grant from the Lauren Bacall Label which will be released as a 2x12'' later this year. George is also known as Filmmaker. He has launched his Music Documentary about the deep House scene in Madrid: 'Exploring Madrid'.

"So this is my first recording I've done, although I've been mixing for the last couple of years now. I feel like the mix is a pretty accurate representation of my taste in house music. A combination of both new and old, some tribal elements, breaks and early morning stuff. I guess I've been lucky enough to see a lot of good DJ's on a regular basis and have a variety of record shops to motivate me whilst having lived in Berlin the last few years, which has definitely helped me progress, as well as being exposed to great local and international artists whilst I was living in Melbourne. I guess the stuff coming out of Norway and Canada (both past and present) has been an influence as well and I guess thats pretty evident in the mix with tracks by artists such as; Bjorn Torske, Erot, Globex and Local Artist to name a few. I try to keep a pretty mixed bag though in that respect and am a big fan of stuff from Italy and France as well as America. I hope people enjoy the tracks as much as I do anyway. I guess I should do some obligatory shout outs to Rich(bringing the enchanted rydims)for letting me use his equipment to record the mix and Mario the Exterminador... "

Derek Carr on Facebook: www.facebook.com/derek.carr.507

@derekcarr

Derek Carr has been producing and releasing Detroit-tinged electronic music for almost two decades. He has released music on labels such as ‘For those that Knoe’, ‘Revoke’, ‘Nice and Nasty’ and ‘Headspace’. Born and raised in Westmeath, Ireland, Derek got an early taste for finely crafted melodic techno through compilations like Network’s ‘Bio-Rhythms’ and Warp’s ‘Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove’. Having been a fan of bands such as Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode through his formative years, Derek felt drawn to this new sound coming from Detroit, Sheffield and Leeds. Recognising the home made ‘punk’ ethos of early ‘Bleep techno’ he began to pick up second hand instruments, initially investing in a cheetah sampler and boss drum machine. Derek then set about creating his own sound, a sound that owed much to the techno pioneers, B12, the Black Dog, As One, Nexus 21 and Rhythmatic to name but a few. In 2001 Derek launched his own label ‘Trident Recordings’ and released the ‘Copper Beech e.p.’ (the only release to date) a collection of deep soulful techno. Only 500 copies were pressed and it has since become something of a collector’s item. Subsequent releases on ‘Digital Soul’ and ‘Geek Records’ further cemented Carr’s place amongst a new generation of techno producers that looked to combine soul and melody with electronic dancefloor grooves. Derek Carr is a name known by few and far between but he has built a worthy, but unfortunately not widely-spread, reputation for putting together stunning deep techno.

@rubsilent

A veteran DJ from Istanbul Turkey, part-time DJ and a full-time vinyl junkie, Rubsilent started collecting records back in 1996 and it has been his obsession ever since. It is interesting to note that he had actually moved to Chicago for University in year 2000, which he notes was partially motivated by his desire to pay a musical pilgrimage to this enormous factory of house music. He moved back to Istanbul in 2007 with a much advanced record collection and inevitably a better knowledge of the rich musical heritage of the sprawling US megacity that is rarely disputed to be the birthplace of house music.

"I enjoy manipulating tracks with longer transitions, taking listeners on long journeys, never limiting my selections to a specific sub-genre. My primary focus is on House and Techno and anything in between, as my mixes contain a blend of new tunes mixed with timeless out-of-print cuts from yesteryear and yesterdecades"

Norm Talley on Facebook: www.facebook.com/norm.talleyii

Born and raised on Detroit's westside in the late 60's Norm's addiction to music began at an early age.By the age of 13 years old Norm's diverse musical outlook consisted of Disco, Progressive, Jazz.

Starting off Norm collected good music (45's-8-tracks-Vinyl) with proceeds earned from his paper route and eventually was introduced to Ken Collier who just happened to live 3 blocks over. Most of the Disco and Progressive Talley was introduced to during this time was through Ken. With one turntable, an eight-track player, a receiver and some speakers, Talley would listen to music with friends.

One of these friends eventually needed a DJ for a backyard party, which Talley played with his one turntable without mixing. After earning money to buy a full set-up, he soon had many requests for gigs, and has launched an internationally successful career as a DJ, producer, and all around musician.

"As a long time Chubby fan I was inspired to create a mix that moved through a bunch of different vinyl textures with a bit of depth and variety throughout. Perhaps it's a bit less focussed on the "groove" as many of my mixes are, and a bit more exploratory rhythmically. Turned out to be one of my favourite mixes. Two hours, all vinyl. Starts with a bit of breaky, lo-fi crunch courtesy of artists such as MoonB and then ventures off into a bit of smoother and deeper vibes from Deep Explorer, Saine & HVL before switching gears a bit in the back half with some Fred P, Linkwood, Mall Grab, Deep 88."

Mike Grant/Moods & Grooves on Facebook: goo.gl/IIyWhD

@mikegrant50

http://www.big50entertainment.com/

At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin.

Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills.

During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open.

During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast. Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance.

In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Additionally, he’s remixed the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” been selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selected and participated in DEMF/Movement, and included in the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

Music has touched Hakim Murphy in a way that made him fall in love with its rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. So in the natural progression dancing took over his body, but yet Murphy's soul craved for more and that is when playing records surfaced. Ah, then the fascination with the fast dance tracks turned into deep House production through friends and experiences, which them blossomed into a Bachelor’s degree in music composition. Liberal arts training allowed Murphy to take classes and learn about human intellect, nature, and essentially his personal definition of art. Synapsis Records and Machining Dreams record labels are born and are currently releasing music by, for, and from the underground. Then after learning the craft, collaborations were born as Murphy is part of Innerspace Halflife, Pegasus Heat, Resonating, Hardware Hustlerz, and Slowmotion.

In 1994 Scott Ferguson was introduced to the House & Techno scene in Detroit, Michigan. By the next year Ferguson began Deejaying and consuming a wide range of vinyl records which included, Detroit & Chicago House, Detroit Techno, Disco, & Funk. On the recommendation of UR founder ‘Mad’ Mike Banks, Ferguson purchased the Ensoniq ASR-10 in 1998. The ASR workstation would become the most intregal part of his sample heavy, filtered down sound.

Ferguson released his first 12″ record on his own imprint in 2001 and since has released records on Kenny Dixon Jr.’s ‘Mahogani Music’, as well as Reggie Doke’s ‘Psychostatia Recordings’. In 2012 Ferguson started two new projects, the ‘Black Boxx’ project using only 3 black hardware boxes to compose simple, yet effective, loop based machine music and JBSF with fellow DJ/Producer Jitterbug.

Scott’s productions have been played and charted by legendary Deejays including Derrick May, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Marcellus Pittman, Rick Wade, and Mike Huckaby. Currently Ferrispark Records is still manufacturing and selling 12″ vinyl records and Ferguson is still travelling the world playing them.

Scott's mix is influenced by Detroit radio stations like WJLB that he used to listen to on the weekends during his early twenties.

Kai Alcé on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kaialce

@kaialce

www.ndatl.com & www.kaialce.com

Perhaps it’s a combination of his Haitian roots, his youth spent in St. Croix, and his New York City upbringing. It is evident when he steps behind the turntables or CDJs, where he is at once clearly comfortable and believe it or not, just a tad bit nervous.

After more than 20 years in the business, yes, “The Kaizer” still gets butterflies.

That’s probably what makes Kai Alcé such a force: He doesn’t settle down, blend in or go along. That integrity comes through in every gig he’s worked – from his early days at Detroit’s Music Institute when he was just teenager, to the 10-year-long DEEP legacy at MJQ that he co-founded, to the production company, NDATL, that he created in 2008.

@7-days-ent-1

Born in the 70’s at the peak of Motown Records, Leonard Strickland Aka Big Strick was heavily influenced by the temptations, Marvin Gaye, 4 Tops and a host of other extraordinary acts that blessed detroit with great soulful music. As a youth, Big Strick started taking it to another unique detroit sound, P-FUNK (PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC), whose style of funky guitar, bass, keyboard, funky synthesiser and drum players led to a style that would change the face of music forever.

As an early teen Big Strick was introduced to house music. At that time The Wizard (Jeff Mills) was the DJ on 92.3 WDRQ. Big Strick recalls “sitting listening in amazement to the radio and would not move until his set was over, saying ‘damn, this guy’s fast’. Spending hours at a time taping him on cassette and walking the 12 blocks till early hours of the morning.

After releasing 2 underground anthems on FXHE in 2009, Big Strick started his own label 7Days ENT in 2011 featuring artists such as Omar S, Generation Next and the return of the legend Reckless Ron Cook, a rare appearance from the former Submerge & Metroplex artist and a true pioneer of the techno movement in the early 90’s. As Generation Next sets the tone for an outer-Galactic experience with Sequence 11 the stage is set for pure deepness only products of Detroit can bring! Alongside Omar S on Family Affair, Big Strick & son Generation Next has orchestrated a masterpiece sure to please the dance floors worldwide.

Specter on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spectertetrode

Andres Ordonez aka Specter developed and crafted his signature style of the Chicago house sound over a span of 22 years. Specter’s ambience-driven, organic touch exudes an infectious groove that is deeply soulful, sensual, earthy, warm and nocturnal with a good measure of sublime disco, acid house, jazzy inflections and pure funk.

Specter’s interest in house music piqued in the 80′s, when the wunderkind genre blew up in the city of Chicago. Specter would tape and devour the novel, often raw and eventually legendary mixes from radio stations like WBMX, WCYC, WCRX, WKKC and WGCI. Early influences include DJs like Farley Jackmaster Funk, Edward Get Down Crosby, Mickey Oliver, Bobby Q bobby,Lee Collins, Lil Louis and the inimitable Ron Hardy. Specter started DJaying at the age of 15 playing house, disco and italo . Spinning at basement parties around the city and suburbs.When Chicago’s loft-party and rave scene started to take off in the mid-90s, Specter began incorporating the edgier, minimal heat of Detroit techno into his sound.

By 1999 and 2000, Specter had established himself as a respected DJ through his many mix tapes and playing loft parties around the city, He Also co-founded a production label with Damon Lamar aka Baby pop called Tetrode Music. The first EP release from Tetrode dropped in 2000 and became a underground classic. “For All the Music/Mystery”. Following up with the second release “Mediterranean/Defining Moment” in 2002. Tetrode 03 came out two years later in 2004 titled “The Deep Theory Ep”. and The tetrode sessions in 2009.

Slowburn on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Slowburn/167730576584402

@slow_burn

Slowburn are Phillip Long and David Hargadon, an Irish duo with an analogue sound palette that extends all the way to vintage Chicago, Detroit and New York planes. Much like their alias suggests, the pair are on a measured but magical rise through the underground ranks, and have been since meeting in the booth a few years ago. First introduced to one another in Dublin (at a night where Phil was warming up for Dave), they soon realised their shared plenty of common musical ground, and since then they’ve been churning out an impressive array of productions with considerable success.

Lakuti’s much-revered Uzuri label soon came calling, eventually playing host to Slowburn’s rich and varied sound alongside scene luminaries such as Chicago Skyway, Juju & Jordash and Ksoul & Muteoscillator. A string of releases followed soon after, as the boys followed up on their auspicious start with releases for the likes of Lunar Disko, Apartment,Elecktrosouls, Austere and Appian Sounds as well as on a compilation for the always on-point Grounded in Humanity imprint where they appeared alongside Trax legend, Gene Hunt.

“When we make music, we just try and capture the mood at that moment,” say the pair. “We never set out to make anything in particular and we just jam and take things as they come. I guess we usually try to have a strong sense of melody with our pads and always try to and keep a good flow.”

When working together in the DJ booth, Slowburn also share a fine understanding of dancefloor dynamics and infectious groove, and have brought their intricate sounds to a host of seminal Irish festivals as well as Manchester’s DEAF Institute. Always joining the dots between the old and the new, Slowburn are a duo with a deep understanding of the discerning side of house and techno.

As bright has been their journey to date, Slowburn are only really getting started. A genuinely impressive proposition for fans of connoisseur house sounds, you can expect to hear much more from them over the next few months.

@stump-valley

Pretty mysterious but that’s not the appeal. Super diverse stylistically, but that’s not it either! –
 indeed you’ll uncover little about Stump Valley using the well worn tool of the internet, but what you
 do after hearing all of their tracks on the dancefloor, is chilling out and listen to them again.”`Jordan Czamanski (Juju & Jordash, Off Minor Rec. Owner) -
From an interview for Rush Hour Store in Amsterdam. Raised from the ashes of an old project, Stump Valley is a funny old place in the countryside by the
 forest, where deers and boars run free in the street, that’s the place where the most of S.V. music
 was made.
 After years of djing and producing under different monikers, we decided to move our home studio
and the collection of vinyls to sample, to a place with no internet and no tv. We lived there for 2 years producing music, trying to make something out of time, old sounding but
 modern conceived. When we decided there was enough material, we just put it online and in a
 space of time we would never expect, the most of the material was subscribed to labels. In every release we use to have remixes with the alias Mtrpls, which is our urban side that takes us
back in the streets where we grown up. Spinning records is our main thing, deep into the last 30
years of electronic. For further information: stumpvalleyinfo@gmail.com

Timnah Sommerfeldt has her homebase in Basel near the French-Swiss-German border triangle. Her parents run the sophisticated jazz club Zack, where jazz artists like Maceo Parker, Eddie Palmieri and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins have played live. Thus, Timnah’s relation to music has grown in a natural way, and playing the djembe helped her develop her sense for rhythms and grooves. So she didn’t need much introduction when she got her first mixer and 1200 MK II decks in 2004. Due to her special family heritage, Timnah draws inspiration from handmade and real records. Although she’s only in her mid twenties, her playlists makes you expect an old hand that has been actively DJing since the ‘90s. In 2007 Timnah began moving into music production and her first release will came out on house label Balance Alliance/Enterbt (BA 0006), were in fact produced, pushed and promoted by Chez Damier and Demetrio Giannice.

@darand-land

"1987 was the year I was introduced to the 'clubhouse' sound. I became addicted to this moody, pumping music that my uncle and his friends would bring back from their trips to Chicago and D.C. At this time, I was still in high school, so it was strictly bedroom listening, and weekly viewing of a dance show on public access television. This was long before the days of internet music downloads, and IRC. It was all about tracking down a rare mixtape, or getting one of the handful of vinyl releases. I clamored for anything closely resembling Fingers Inc., Marshall Jefferson, etc.

I attended college outside of Detroit for a few years. There was nothing like the dose of detroit techno and acid house I was receiving. I always gravitated toward the darker, more laid-back tracks from the likes of UR and others. Some of my most memorable experiences are being at random warehouses down in the city until sunrise. I eventually made it back to Buffalo.

In Buffalo, there was a small, but tight-knit group of folks that promoted the sound. It extended to the kids at the various universities, many from the five boroughs, that were looking to hear house. Strictly and Nervous set the sound at most of the functions. If I wasn't at a private party, I would end up at places like 'The Icon', and 'The Difference' (which happened to be named after a Strictly Rhythm track!).

While I was completing my degree, I told myself that there would be writing and production of house in my future. It took until 1998, after a career pit stop in Boston, and a move to California, to actually start writing songs. I was fortunate to draw on some key influences to develop my sound. Musically, my main influences were Wayne Gardiner, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, and Jesse Saunders. Other powerful influences were my exposure to city life in Buffalo. The classic architecture, the strong arts scene, and the struggles of the inner-city live through my music.

In 1999, I met Chris Gray (from Deep4Life) online. Here was a person who had a different path to the house sound, but I related to him like no other. The rest is history..."

Solson on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sol.son.58

Solson's backgrounds as a drummer and jazz enthusiast have given him the distinct gift of being able to select great works of music, and to work with the people who play it. The direction of his life was changed the first time he saw Theo Parrish play in Chicago. That moment is when he decided a goal in his life would be to turn people on to good music.

This passion has seen Solson become a hard-working force in the underground and led him to organize some of the most memorable events in recent years that have featured some of the most talented and discerning DJs. “Disco Juice” featured Zernell and Rahaan, which led to the creation of the “A Love Supreme” loft parties who saw the likes of Sadar Bahar, Sean Sounds, Kon, Jamie 3:26 and Lee Collins.

He has organized the “Phuture” parties whose emphasis was House and Techno and had Hakim Murphy, Steven Tang, Chicago Skyway and Traxx as guests and has hosted a “Downbeat vs. Tetrode” collaboration party twice with Specter and Damon Lamar when the Downbeat label DJs visit from Spain.

Most recently he founded the “Disco Illusion” Rare Groove/Deep Disco parties with DJs Darryn and Tone B. Nimble. This life-long student and lover of music is very grateful to have rubbed elbows with some of the best in the field and we can only expect great things from him and his sets in years to come.

@ernie-minuendo-recordings

Influenced by electronic music of the late 80's and the Old School hip hop culture since he was young, it was in '95 when he got this first contact with Madrid's underground scene, where he got a huge dose of it and new electronic influences as an attendant. This has generated a big interest for him and he decided to take part of the scene himself.

While all these years performing in a great amount of clubs, festivals and museums across Europe and South America. His sessions are plenty of a big sense and strong personality, he is lover of vinyl and beatdown sounds, his sessions likes from Dub techno, Deep house, Detroit house, Chicago to Disco & Funk.

In 2004, he created Minuendo Recording with C. Gonzalez, one of the most multifaceted and alive in the actual electronic underground scene, putting together in the same label a huge variety of styles, IDM, Deep House, Techno, Ambient, Electro… Joining in their 12" artists such a Antonelli Eclectr, Oscar Mulero, Arcanoid, Juju&Jordash, Patrice Scott, Jus-Ed, Xpansul, Dubbyman, Ricardo Miranda, Lady Blacktronika, Bjak, Cesar Ramirez, Brian Gardner, Satore, Above Smoke, Deymare, 2Deepsoul, Chicagodeep, Taelue, Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana… In this season Minuendo is deeply centred in the black sounds, Deep house & Disco music.

@zeus383

I’m Zeus. I play records.

About the mix: "The mix was recorded in my bedroom on 2 turntables, a shitty mixer and with my collection of records. No real preparation – just going off the vibe of each record and how I felt during the recording. Its more of a recorded session rather than a typical podcast/mixtape - It’s meant to be rough around the edges and not ‘clean’. I normally don’t do mixtapes/podcasts but since we have all known each other for such a long time I made the exception for you guys haha."

Track-List: Jump Cutz – Deep Introspection (Edit) [Luxury Service – 1996] Lady E - Seems To Me [Thug Records – 2013] Murat Tepeli - The Jazz Funk (Damiano von Erckert Remix) [ava. -2013] Levon Vincent – Rainstorm II [Novel Sounds – 2013] ? Kerri Chandler – Mommy Whats a Record [Downtown 161 – 2010] New Musik – Warp (Ilo Edit) [White Label] Third Side & ND_Baumecker – Burning [Restoration Records – 2011] Amir Alexander – The Realest of the Real [Vanguard Sound! – 2013] Sand People – Brandy Station [Sand People – 2013] ?

Enjoy :)
