In 2013, writer Adrian Begrand (Popmatters) listed the Rush song "Time Stand Still" at #8 on his "10 Songs That Will Make You Love Rush", calling it "Rush’s best pop moment." And I would have to agree… It is truly one of their best.
However, according to many fans the accompanying video might also be one of Rush’s worse visual moments. Regardless on your take of what the infamous TSS video is really getting at…after you listen to this episode of Two Guys Talking Rush you may discover that it could be the most misunderstood during their “VHS years.” As always, we like to deep dive on this show…and this might be our “deepest.”
As we turn the clocks back, and settle into the dark doldrums of winter lets reflect on a time when Rush were both experimental with their music, flying capabilities, and videos… and we have award winning Polish filmmaker/innovator Zbigniew “Zbig” Rybczyński to thank for that.

This week John & Dan continue their conversation with Tim DeLaughter lead singer of the The Polyphonic Spree.
The Spree is a choral symphonic pop rock band from Dallas, Texas that was formed by the former Tripping Daisies front-man (DeLaughter) back in 2000. The band has released six studio albums, along with several live albums and soundtracks over the past two decades.
Back in April the Spree released their first covers album via Good Records. The album, titled Afflatus, included a cover of Rush's The Spirit of Radio. In addition to the Rush track, the album includes covers of INXS, The Rolling Stones, ABBA, and many more. Afflatus can be ordered at www.thepolyphonicspree.com

This week John & Dan do a little chit chattin’ about the boys. We also welcome special guest Tim DeLaughter…you might have heard him before? Tim is the lead singer of the The Polyphonic Spree.

Andre’ is a Asheville NC based musician, sound designer, guitarist, synthesist and founder of Project/Object, longest running Zappa-alumni-based tribute band in the world.
From the early 1980s, Cholmondeley has worked with synthesis in his original music, from early guitar synths and pedals to studying analog synths, musique concrete, tape splicing and world music at Rutgers University. Currently he works with an ever-evolving compact modular & guitar setup.
Andre´ has demoed at trade shows internationally for MOOG Synths, and is usually on tour somewhere as Tour Manager, Tech, or Production Manager for over twenty five years with prog-rock, fusion and blues legends like Al Di Meola, Keith Emerson, moe., Derek Trucks, Ten Years After, Eddie Jobson and YES.
He has toured & performed more than ten countries on two continents with over a dozen of Frank Zappa’s alumni like Don Preston, Ike Willis, Ed Mann and Napoleon Murphy Brock.
Andre´ is an interviewer and show-host for MAKE WEIRD MUSIC, the popular YouTube channel and social media presence that promotes unique and envelope-pushing art and artists.

His career includes a long line of credits for many legendary things including his time with Rush at Le Studio where he directed the Limelight and Tom Sawyer Videos.

This week on 2GTR John and Dan tackle big topics, while massaging each others egos.
No seriously…who hasn’t been ––Rush Shamed––at least once in their life? I have…and at 50 years old I am still poked fun at for digging the best damn band in the universe. It all comes down to science folks …natural science…and it makes perfect sense to me why I love Rush so much…in fact its “quite logical captain.”
But not everyone does, and we want to find out why on 2GTR. Remember, It’s our job to listen to and respect non-believers in this format. As hosts we want to hear everyone’s side of the story. It gets really boring, really fast, when you are in a room full of people who agree on everything.
Now to jog your warm memory chips…Pause: Rewind–replay–
In April 2021 San Francisco based writer Leslie (ooh-lin-nen) Ylinen at McSweeney's Daily Humor website wrote an article titled “An FAQ About Your New Birth Control: The Music of Rush” - a satirical take on using Rush as birth control.
Here is a snippet of the controversial and hilariously funny piece:
“... No one has ever gotten pregnant while listening to the music of Rush. Clinical studies show that when combined with watching a male sexual partner play air bass along to the extended solo in "Freewill," the contraceptive efficacy of Rush approaches 100%. ...”

Beginning in 1968, she worked as a radio disc jockey and music director, and is credited with discovering the progressive rock band Rush while at WMMS in Cleveland in 1974. She has taught courses in broadcasting, media criticism, and media history, and is author of a number of books, including the first book-length study devoted to the history of women in American broadcasting, Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting.

Last year the St. Catharines City Council, with the full support of the community, voted to name the newly rebuilt pavilion at Lakeside Park the Neil Peart Pavilion at Lakeside Park in honor of the hometown icon who passed away January 2020. The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. The city officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and will be accepting submissions through March 29th.

Brad first worked with RUSH for the last half of the Roll The Bones tour. He worked again with RUSH on the Presto tour and has been with RUSH ever since the Vapor Trails tour. Past artists that Brad has worked for include Rage Against the Machine, Jane’s Addiction, Def Leppard, Marilyn Manson, Shania Twain, Queensryche, and Shakira.

The PDSC Backstory...
The Port Dalhousie Supply Company is a lifestyle apparel brand based in Niagara, Canada. We connect people to place through our works. There is a real “sense of place” in Port Dalhousie. Neil described that in Lakeside Park the song.
The O’Connor Initiative is a non-profit organization that runs community events and special projects in Niagara.
In partnership between our two companies we designed the Lakeside Park T-Shirt to honour the Art and Life of Neil Peart as he grew up in the area and was inspired by some of his surroundings. We didn’t plaster Neil’s name or face all over this shirt as we feel he would not have appreciated that, instead we made a classy ode to him through our own imagery. Willows in the breeze!
What we hope to accomplish is to firstly connect people to the upcoming commemoration to Neil in Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie. RUSH has a global fan base and they want to see Neil commemorated. Our shirts allow them to connect directly to the project, wherever they are! And hopefully bring their shirts when they make Port Dalhousie a travel destination.
The City has struck a Taskforce to manage the project. Secondly, the proceeds from the t-shirts will directly benefit the project through the City.

They also bring back Canadian music journalist, critic and author Martin Popoff! Martin is known for his prolific body of work. He has written many books that both critically evaluate heavy metal/rock and roll and document its history. He is the senior editor and co-founder of Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, and has been referred to as "heavy metal's most widely recognized journalist" These two captivating hosts zero in on his latest work ~ Limelight: Rush in the '80s ~ the second book in his 3-part Rush Across the Decades series. Popoff lives in Toronto, Ontario and is a huge Rush fan.

When Neil finally retired from Rush in 2015, citing tendonitis and shoulder issues, he said “It does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to … take yourself out of the game,” he explained at the time. “I would rather set it aside than face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’” …Even so, we somehow knew we might never see him again. Yet not in this way. As dedicated fans, we mourn his loss. Collectively we feel for his close friends and family. It helps to talk about it.
Have a listen with hosts Dan, John, and special guests/super fans/organizers Lance “The Shred” Kasten and Mike Rosenthal. Both are carrying on the legacy of NEP with a “Night for Neil” through their organization Overtime Angels.

This series focuses on how Rush have become influencers on other musicians' work like artist Jacob Moon who is no stranger to the world of Rush. Jacob is a solo Canadian folk singer/songwriter and guitarist based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He has an extensive repertoire of songs, with nine albums to his credit. He has won many accolades and has been invited to perform for and with some of his heroes, including Rush, Marillion, Ron Sexsmith and Gordon Lightfoot. Moon's famous YouTube cover of Rush's Subdivisions went viral in 2009 and has earned him many fans around the world. For us, admiring such a geeky band has come with much ridicule. Perplexed, our friends couldn’t understand rock songs about fantasy, religion, libertarianism, and philosophy. For a time, it felt like Rush were a band that we could embrace as our own. Yet, with the groups rise in fame and broader audience appeal, they were no longer the biggest cult band everyone hated. Suddenly it became cool to love Rush. After over 40 years Rush released a total of 20 studio albums, 11 live albums as well as numerous compilation albums, of which 24 have gone gold, and 14 platinum. And it has only been a decade or so that they have become a household name. So why did it take Rush this long to become mainstream?

This episode three is part one of a series of shows on Rush production called: “Behind the Lighted Stage.” This episode John and Dan interview former Front of House (FOH) sound engineer Robert Scovill for a behind the scene look at Rush sound.
Robert Scovill is a 35-year veteran of professional concert sound and recording and has mixed over 3,500 events in his career. His engineering and production talents have been enlisted by a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of marquee music acts including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Matchbox Twenty, Jackson Browne, Def Leppard, Prince, and Rush specifically on the Presto, Roll the Bones, Counterparts, and T4E tours.
His body of live sound and recording work has garnered numerous industry accolades including 6 TEC Awards for technical and creative achievement in sound reinforcement and 3 Parnelli Awards for live sound engineer of the year! At the time of his NAMM Oral History interview, Robert held the position of Senior Specialist for live sound and recording products for Avid Technologies and served as a principle designer and contributor for their VENUE line of live sound consoles. He is regarded as the pioneer of the virtual sound check and multi-track archiving workflows for live sound.

Donna Halper Guest! Donna L. Halper (born February 1947 in Dorchester, Massachusetts) is a Boston-based historian and radio consultant. Beginning in 1968, Halper worked as a radio disc jockey and music director, and is credited with discovering the progressive rock band Rush while at WMMS in Cleveland in 1974. She has taught courses in broadcasting, media criticism, and media history, and is author of a number of books, including the first book-length study devoted to the history of women in American broadcasting, Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting.
