Page 1 Obituary 222www.thelancet.com Vol 387 January 16, 2016 Alisha Lee Teenager with congenital muscular dystrophywho advocated for the rights of adolescentswith disabilities. Born on Jan 16, 1993, inToronto, ON, Canada, she died there fromcomplications of her disease on July 24, 2015,age 22 years. “What’s important to me in life is trying to be as regularas I can be, do everything I can, and don’t waste time or sitaround moping”, Alisha Lee wrote in a Personal Accountin The Lancet for a special issue about disability in 2009.Lee, who was diagnosed with congenital musculardystrophy as an infant and had many operations—forclub feet, to have rods placed in her back, to receivea tracheotomy—fought for her right to be a regularteenager. “She was hard-working, courageous, plucky—all of those words used to describe disabled people. Butshe was also pissed off by the system. It really bugged herthat she had to spend her precious energy fighting forher rights”, says Miriam Kaufman, Head of the Division ofAdolescent Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children inToronto, ON, Canada.Like most adolescents, Lee had a close crew of friends. She argued with her parents, had crushes, and wasobsessed with pop stars. A devoted fan of the JonasBrothers, Lee and a nurse who cared for her once travelledto Detroit to see them perform, pausing at the US–Canadian border to call her lawyer over a concern thatas a minor she would have trouble crossing. For severalyears she lived at Holland Bloorview Kids RehabilitationHospital in Toronto. Lee campaigned to get access tothe Internet in her room there and within days has usedup her data limit downloading videos and movies of theband. It was typical teen behaviour. But Lee’s days were far from normal. Thoughtful andinquisitive from a young age, Lee attended a regularschool, always in a wheelchair, and sometimes on aventilator, accompanied by a nurse. Her friends knewhow to operate her ventilator and suction. As she grewolder and the disease progressed, she encountered a hostof challenges related to her care in a school setting. Shelonged to eat lunch with her friends in the cafeteria ratherthan in her classroom and fought and won that right.During her last year of school, she was told she wouldn’tbe able to take an English course required for graduationbecause there was no educational assistant available tohelp her during that period. With the help of a lawyer, shewas able to get the decision reversed and graduated. “The disability was her world. To her, the real disability was theworld”, says Kaufman.Lee dreamt of being a lawyer or a graphic designerand was accepted into York University in Toronto butshe was unable to obtain the full-time attendant careshe required. Until her death.
