Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six or fewer social connections away from one another. Curious storyteller Sarah Horbacewicz decided to put this theory to the test in the unique city of Ithaca, New York. To explore this idea Sarah picked up a telephone book, flipped to a page, and interviewed a random member of the community. From there, connections developed -- and so did a series.
Days before the last interview was set to air, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and threw everything for a loop. Now, over a year later, WICB's Jay Bradley spoke with me to revisit every degree and tie up loose ends, showing everyone has a story to share-- even the one conducting the interview.
Old friends bring new connections as Sherman introduces us to Bob– a man who has quite impressive manifests and isn't afraid to share everything about them.
Part of the theory of Six Degrees of Separation is never knowing exactly who you'll meet, and this applies just as well to top hit, world-traveling, songwriter Sherman.
From a barber to a wrestler, my next call was with the only author that has a lesson for us all, not in writing, but in living well.
The second degree continues to lead me to interesting people with incredible stories, like Kyle the World Champion wrestler.
Whether a cousin, a second cousin, a friend of a friend, or even a Facebook friend, everyone, according to this theory at least, is only 6 connections away. I wanted to use this theory to connect the people of Ithaca, New York through random interviews. The idea was simple as whatever name I blindly pointed to in the Yellow Book would be my next interviewee. But 'simple' could never describe the journey that this first call would take me on.
