"Every 60 seconds an animal is abused, so instead of hearing the facts and doing nothing, we need to educate ourselves, educate others, and make a proactive change." -Jackie and Hannah
Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! Following our One Year Anniversary episode last week, we wanted to continue providing quality content starting off with a dive into Animal Cruelty. This episode takes a different approach at some of our former episodes such as our Meat Industry episode with Maya Eisengart. After a riveting and high energy icebreaker question on which animals represent each other, we define what animal cruelty actually is. We also discuss a few statistics that really put the entire topic into perspective. For example, did you know that every 60 seconds an animal is abused? Did you know that 95% of a circus animal's life is spent in a cage? With the numbers in mind, we talk about animal cruelty by commission vs. animal cruelty by omission. Another vital part of Animal Cruelty is really breaking down how it can manifest and the ways Animal Cruelty is ever-present. We touch on this for a minute as we speak on types of cruelty. Another key aspect of Animal Cruelty is learning why animals are exploited and what they are exploited for. To end on a high-note, we talk about how we can help this cause and some action steps we can collectively take against it. A reminder that if you are personally triggered by the conversation of food or diets, please skip this episode. We hope you all enjoy the episode, and please wear a mask!
Love,
Jackie and Hannah

"Many people see the Hijab as just a head covering but it's really much more. I feel like I'm in a little safety bubble when I have it on." - Raya Al Weshah
Welcome back to another week of Dive Right In! In honor of our one year anniversary of Dive Right In Podcast next week, we have been working hard to put out a newsletter discussing our journey, what we have learned, and what is to come in the next couple of months! Please be sure to text, email, or DM us your email so that you can receive it in your inbox! This week, we speak with Raya Al Weshah, a Hijabi born in Jordan and now a sophomore at Beachwood High School, to talk about her experiences with Islamophobia and why she is passionate about being Muslim. Before we get into the interview, we address Yom HaShoah which translates to "Holocaust Remembrance Day", and it is when we take some time to remember each and every one of the lives lost during the Holocaust. Transitioning off from that important discussion, we acknowledge how even though Jews and Muslims are often pinned against each other in the media, this is definitely a stereotype and we are still able to learn about and celebrate the Muslim culture. We then welcome in Raya to introduce herself and talk about her story and heritage. She mentions that while she has never been a victim of outright Islamophobia, she has definitely heard micro-aggressions targeted at her because of her religion and because she wears a hijab. We then make sure to talk about the recent French legislation which prevents Muslim women and young adults from wearing a hijab and participating in basic activities and services. Raya talks about how this made her feel and the toll this took on the Muslim community worldwide. Thank you all for joining us this week, and we are excited to see you back next week for our One Year Anniversary!
Love,
Jackie and Hannah

“We don’t need to feel guilty for our privilege, but we need to use it to help others." Natalie Carnoy
Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we wanted to do a deep dive into the ways in which the pandemic has affected so many aspects of society that often go unnoticed. We start off by talking about the recent Atlanta shooting which targeted the AAPI (Asian American, Pacific Islander) community. The unjust treatment of the AAPI community has directly been correlated to Former President Trump's perpetuation of Xenophobic rhetoric following his proclamation blaming COVID-19 on the Asian community. Seeing how unfair and unjust this is, we wanted to talk about our responsibility as allies to stand up against Xenophobia and work to #EndAsianHate. We also talk about gun control and the importance of speaking up for more understanding, love, and community. Shifting our perspective, we define our terms to gear up for a conversation with Natalie Carnoy on Food Insecurity and how that has become more prevalent during the pandemic. During the discussion with Natalie, we talk about what a Food Desert is and who it disproportionately affects. We look into SNAP and WIC benefits and also learn about what we can do to address the issue. We want to encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on your situation and educate yourself on ways to help. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode, and stay safe!

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." -Martin Luther King Jr.
During this week's episode, we shed some light on some of the scariest and darkest political ideologies of our time: Extremist Groups. After referencing Fascism in E. 38 about the Capitol Insurrection, we wanted to take a step back and work on defining our terms. Through our icebreaker question and current events update, we discuss the mindset and thought process that many Extremists have and how scary the rash and unknown are. We also touch on Environmental Warfare in relation to Middle Eastern politics. Stay tuned for more to come on this topic! Following this interesting discussion, we transition into talking about Fascism and its history. Additionally, we touch on what Fascism advocates for and how their extreme actions lead to more conflict, especially by counter-protesters such as Antifa. Focusing on Antifa, we discuss the role it plays in furthering violence and how it correlates to Anarchism. We discuss the sad reality of doxxing which both ends of the political spectrum partake in, and we highlight the ways in which the media perpetuates violence. Moving into discussing the QAnon Conspiracy group, we talk about what QAnon is, its origins, and their methods for drawing in supporters. Through learning about the role idolizing Former President Trump plays in QAnon conspiracy theories, we move into highlighting other popularized political conspiracies that have swept the media. To wrap up the episode, we talk about the threat Extremism puts on democracy no matter which side of the political spectrum it comes from. We urge everyone to remain educated and alert and to work to combat these violent organizations. Throughout the episode we emphasize that violence does not put an end to violence, and it ends up creating more conflict than there was prior. Thank you all for tuning in and for sharing this episode with your friends and family!

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
This week, we dedicate the entire episode to discussing Black History month and giving a platform to Black historical figures who have and have not been given the recognition they deserve. We want to emphasize that as two white females, we are not at all trying to take the spotlight away from people of color to share their stories, but rather to amplify their voices and the voices of those who are unable to speak out and raise awareness. Before jumping into Black History, we talk briefly about National Eating Disorders Awareness Week which spans from February 22nd to February 28th, 2021. Additionally, we discuss celebrating Purim during this time and how important it is to seek out joy in our everyday lives. Transitioning into the (beyond) meat of the episode, we touch on historical figures such as Audre Lorde, Amelia Boynton Robinson, Fritz Pollard, Jesse Owens, Alice Coachman, Garrett Morgan, Claudette Colvin, and Ruby Bridges who have all made such a positive impact on the world we live in today. While these are some of the Black historical figures who have had a big impact on today's society, these are not nearly all of the people who deserve recognition for the brave work they did and continue to do. Please make sure to continue your own research and learn about people you have never heard of before. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode, stay safe and wear a mask!

"The idea of representation stems from allyship, but more importantly, giving Black people the space they need to fulfill their potential." -Traci
Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we start off the episode by discussing Black History Month and how important it is to have minority representation in all walks of life. We then welcome Traci back for a third time on to the podcast to discuss how her experiences as a Black person have affected her outlook and her activism. One of the main points of our interview with Traci is discussing the differences between Tolerance and Acceptance. We discuss why being able to see people without bias is important and ways we can combat internalized biases. Furthering this, Traci brings up how BIPOC portrayal in children's books is lacking and highlights Little E: the Big Misunderstanding by Dr. Eddie Moore. This book speaks about diversity and acceptance in a way that is comfortable for young people. Furthering this discussion, we talk about racial inequality as a whole and how the Black and BIPOC communities are disproportionately affected by police brutality. Wrapping up, we touch on the role that social media has in suppressing diverse voices and the importance of combatting that. We are so appreciative of the time that Traci spent speaking with us; make sure to tune in next week as we will be dedicating the entire episode to discussing Black History month, why it is important, and historical Black figures who have and have not been given the recognition they deserve. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode, stay safe and wear a mask!

"As opposed to tearing each other down, we need to be surrounding ourselves with kind and diverse friends to help build each other up!" -Jackie and Hannah
Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we start off the episode by discussing what we look for in a friend and how to best look out for each other in these trying times. We also define our terms by elaborating on what toxicity means. Despite the importance of fluidity in definitions, we believe that education is the key to informed activism! We then dive into the bulk of the episode by discussing what toxic masculinity is. It's important to be able to both identify toxic masculinity, and be armed to address it in a safe and effective manner. We further this discussion by touching on "mansplaining" and discuss how prevalent it is in today's society. Moving onto how friendships can become toxic, we encourage everyone to find ways to spread positivity, yet be able to recognize the harmfulness of toxicity in others. Mindsets can also become toxic, so it's important to reach out in times of need and locate mental health resources. We conclude the episode by talking about positive goal setting and reminding ourselves that healing doesn't come overnight; it is a journey that takes time. Stay safe and wear a mask!

"The world around us just needs to realize the power that we hold to create inclusive environments for everyone." -Loralei Cook
Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we start off the episode by defining our terms and explaining some of the common definitions associated with the LGBTQ+ community. We believe that education is the key to informed activism, so by providing definitions, we hope to spread more awareness and inclusivity for the often marginalized Queer community. We also touch on the origins of the word "Queer" and how it has been reclaimed as a force for good. Jumping into our interview with Loralei Cook, an LGBTQ+ activist and one of the founders of the Queer on Campus organization, we discuss how being a Queer woman has impacted her. We then dive into discussing her organization, Queer on Campus, and the positive change it has had on people around her. It is amazing to see how young people are changing the world and we further this by discussing how to become a better ally and the importance of promoting equality for all. We also focus on representation and how the LGBTQ+ community is affected by the U.S. Healthcare system. We conclude the interview by discussing the hope and improvement the Biden-Harris Administration will bring in the upcoming months and years. Following our interview with Loralei, we wrap up by discussing the ideas of appropriation versus appreciation and the steps we plan on taking to address internalized homophobia. Thank you all for tuning in, and we we will see you all next week!

"It's just about knowing that you have value as a person regardless of how you look and how other people see you." -Fern Cooke
This week, we take the time to discuss a common struggle amongst many teenagers and young adults, body image and learning to love yourself. After defining our terms and discussing what body positivity is, we invite Fern Cooke to come and share her story of activism, pride, and love. Fern Cooke is based in Manchester, U.K., and she spends her time creating artwork on her body that spreads messages promoting body positivity, environmentalism, LGBTQ+ rights and equality for all. We discuss injustices that many young women face, in addition to her own personal story. We are honored that Fern took the time to speak with us, and we are incredibly thankful for the messages she spreads. You can find her website, which includes her virtual portfolio and Instagram handle linked below. After our interview with Fern, we reflect on her words by sharing our personal struggles with body image, in addition to discussing media portrayal of bodies online. Throughout the episode we emphasize that there is no "perfect" body type, and the first step in being able to help others is to conquer your struggles and learn to love yourself first.
