We Are All Enlisted explores scripture and faith from the perspective of a US Army Chaplain who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Episodes discuss readings from the "Come Follow Me" curriculum, as well as interviews with other LDS chaplains, servicemembers, and/or people of other faiths. This isn't a normal "Come Follow Me" episode. Instead, I take a few mintues to talk about WHY I did the podcast last year, what changes will be made for the podcast this year, and what to look forward to. If you don't want to listen, here's the summary:
- Last year's podcast was a lot of fun, but took too much time to be sustainable
- This year I plan to do much shorter episodes about the Doctrine and Covenants - more like a devotional format on one or two ideas I like
- Additionally, I'm hoping to publish some interviews with chaplains who are serving in the military for people to hear their stories
- I may also record some conversations with my wife Dana about General Conference talks, as I think our modern instruction may be some of the most important teachings and guidance that we have in all scripture.

This week we get the last reading assignment for 2020, Moroni chapter 10. We talk about what it means to exhort, and why Moroni keeps using that word. Also, why we're exhorted not to pray and ask if the Book of Mormon is true, but to ask if these things are NOT true. We look at a beautiful duet on the gifts of the spirit between Moroni and Paul, and finish with shoutouts to Mormon, Nephi and Isaiah. After reading again this year, I believe it even more than I did before. I'm betting my soul that this book is the word of God - and I feel pretty great about that :)

This week we get three chapters of Mormon's teachings - a sermon to the believers in chapter 7, and two epistles to his son Moroni in chapters 8 and 9. If you could only pick one chapter to study out of the Book of Mormon, Moroni 7 would make my Final Four, and would have a strong chance at being my final pick. This is where we see the exposition of Jesus' teachings about how to judge (or discern) righteously - by looking to the fruits (or actions) that are manifestations of what lies in the hearts of men and women. Also, one of the best descriptions of faith, hope and charity is in this chapter, culminating in the command to seek charity through prayer so that it can transform us. Chapter eight explains how to confront contention and disputations over doctrine (in this case over child baptism) - with pure truth given through revelation to God's designated messengers. And finally, a terrifying description of a world where people have rejected God to go it on their own. No, they don't end up with the most amazing Babylon ever - they end up with nothing at all. And that's where we'll be if we also try to live without Christ.

This week we get Moroni's last minute additions to the Book of Mormon, including priesthood ordinances like the laying on of hands and the sacrament prayers. We also talk about what happens when the Lamanites win (spoiler alert: they don't stop fighting and celebrate). Also, how do we let the Holy Spirit help us to guide our meetings, and what does it mean to be "worthy" to take the sacrament?

This week gives us one of the greatest sermons ever on faith - Ether chapter 12. I take some time to compare Ether 12 with other concepts from Alma 32, Moroni 7, and Hebrews 11-12 to show what the scriptures are trying to teach us about faith (as well as hope and charity). Here's the TL;DR - start with faith in Christ, and go on from there. Also, Moroni says goodbye to the Gentiles (again?) and asks us to please not make fun of him for not being a better writer. I would HAPPILY take his weaknessess if he would be willing to take mine...

This week time REALLY starts to zoom by, and I think there's a good reason for it - the Jaredite record is a macro-view confirmation of the same patterns we see with the Nephites. It is a second witness that the Lord is no respecter of persons - the same rules apply. And if it applied to them, it applies to us. In this episode we continue the discussion of how the Jaredites journey across the ocean can be like our journey through mortality. We also spend a good deal of time talking about secret combinations, and why I think they are among us (because apparently Moroni thought so too!).
One note - I was pretty passionate and pointed in here regarding some examples of secret combinations. Please know that I'm not trying to offend anyone - I hope you can see that I believe that the secret combinations are everywhere, not just in the enemies of the organizations I happen to favor. In other words, it's not us vs. them and they're the bad guys, we are almost all bad guys who must repent and become good guys according to the source of all good - God.

This week we start the Jaredite record, and now it's Moroni providing editorial commentary to us instead of his father Mormon. We talk about how even though Moroni leaves out the first chapters of Genesis, Joseph Smith gives them back in the Book of Moses, as prophesied. We travel with the brother of Jared (and why might he be called that) through his wilderness to the seashore, and try to figure out with him how to get light and air into his ships. Is this one of the great scriptural allegories about our own journey through the dark sea of mortality to our promised land by the light of faith? And finally...bees on barges.

This week we come to the end of Mormon's mission, but thankfully this isn't the last we'll hear from him. We also get our first words from his son Moroni, who will finish this record from here on out, with some help from his father's writings. We talk about the hope that Mormon has for the remant of his people, all that much stronger in the face of the hopelessness of their predicament at that time. We have Mormon's last testimony to that remnant, that they must come to realize who they are and embrace the faith of their fathers. We also have Moroni endorsing Isaiah's words, and talk about how well those words apply to our day, which he surely saw.

This week we finally get insight into the man whose name is on the cover of the book, Mormon himself, as he starts telling us his own story, and it's not a pretty one. If he wants to show us the contrast between good and evil so that we can learn to choose for ourselves, we are now seeing the evil side so quickly after 3rd and 4th Nephi and the beautiful ministry of the Savior. This is one of the most important sections in the book for me, because we see in Mormon himself one of the best examples of Christlike love and charity in the way he serves his people.

This week concludes the personal ministry of Jesus Christ among the Nephites, and gives us both the greatest period of peace and prosperity experienced in the whole book (in less than a dozen or so verses no less), as well as it's eventual downfall and the reason for it. Let's talk about conversion, consecration, and what our "works" have to do with our faith and God's judgements.

This week, we get the best Sacrament meeting ever - one you wouldn't be tempted to fall asleep in :) See what we can learn from it about how to have our meetings be more inspiring. Also, the Savior teaches us about why the promised land was given to the gentiles - spoiler alert, it isn't their exceptionalism - there's nothing exceptional about our pride or righteousness. We talk about how the mission is what makes the gentiles special, and if they don't carry out their mission, the Lord won't keep paying the bills. Also - the Savior expounds all the scriptures and explains the history of everything to the Nephites. Is it possible for us to know those things as well?

This week we see the fulfilment of the Lord's promise to heal those who come unto him - physically as well as spiritually. We talk about how the Savior feels about sin (spoiler alert - he doesn't like it), and how much he wants to bless and heal us if we'll let him. Fire and angels surround and purify not just the children and the disciples, but are also promised to us if we will believe the words of these scriptures. And once we believe them, what lengths will we go to in order to spread the word to the whole world, to gather the descendants of Israel to Jesus Christ, that we may be like him when he appears, purified even as he is pure, one with him and the Father? Only a few chapters, but incredible blessings promised to us.

This week we get the Sermon on the Mount - Book of Mormon style. Let's talk about WHY the poor in spirit are blessed, and HOW to comfort those who mourn. The reason why we're doing something in some cases matters as much or even more than the obedience itself. Speaking of obedience, the Nephites can finally stop practicing the Law of Moses, but the Lord's covenant with Israel continues to our day and beyond.

This week we have the terrible destruction that takes place in the land of the Nephites and Lamanites as a sign of the Savior's death in Jerusalem. We talk about some similarities between living in that day and living in our day, so close (as we assume) to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (see the article by President Nelson linked below). How can we listen to the prophets to be conducted safely through the calamities that will befall our times? What does it look like to have a broken heart and a contrite spirit? What hope is there for people who live in fear and darkness - will the light ever come? And most importantly - how can we be healed in this life? Jesus Christ invites us, as he invited the survivors in this section, to come unto him and be healed. Isn't it time we let him?

This is one of my FAVORITE sections of the Book of Mormon, because we get the contrast between incrdedible highs and lows. Listen as we talk (again) about how signs make terrible foundations for lasting conversion, how consecration societies have different origins but share the same characteristics, and the dangers of being divided up into classes and into tribes. And above all - how to fear God instead of man, and how to fight in His strength.

This week we wrap up the Book of Helaman with Samuel the Lamanite preaching to the Nephites in Zarahemla. Talk about role reversal! One of the things that sticks out to me here is how much Samuel's teachings reinforce the concept of agency, something that hadn't been that evident to me before this time through the passage. Also - again, seeing why signs make a really poor foundation for a real testimony. And finally - is it ever too late to repent? What does it look like to everlastingly procrastinate the day of our repentance!

Continuing through the book of Helaman, this week we get Nephi giving a prophetic play-by-play of the chief jduge's murder, receiving full access to the Lord's power, and using it to smite the land with famine to encourage people to repent. Listen to find out why I think the famine is one of the great examples of charity in the Book of Mormon - sharing the fate of the people you lead. This week we start the book of Helaman, and there is a TON going on in here, including the introduction of the Gadianton robbbers and their secret combinations, the largest expansion of the Church during a Nephite golden era, the Nephites subsequently getting pushed completely out of the southern lands (incuding Zarahemla), and the most incredible missionary effort yet (and that's saying something). Also, come listen and learn about the Mahan principle and how it continues to threaten us today.

Once again, I totally geek out on Nephite tactics and try to draw spiritual lessons from physical battles. I've been waiting all year to get to the war chapters, and we're finally here - and we have TEN chapters to go through! Accordingly, this is the longest episode yet, but I hope it's worth it for you. I try to describe some of the Nephite and Lamanite tactics through the eyes of a career Soldier, and why those details only reinforce my testimony that the Book of Mormon is an authentic ancient document about real people. Even more, I hope that some of the principles illustrated in the Nephite wars can help us understand how to strengthen our own faith and determination in fighting a relentless enemy who wants to see us destroyed.

This episode covers two weeks of reading, and includes Alma's parting instructions to all three of his sons. Although I didn't intentionally plan to put these two weeks together into one episode, I'm glad it worked out that way, because some of the themes that came out with Helaman carried over all the way through Corianton in ways that were meaningful to me. In any case, this week we learn a little bit about how the structure of Alma 36 means that the Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF) DOESN'T actually come first, it comes in the middle of the passage. But the first AND last word is still hugely important in understanding the blessing and curse that are on everyone, not just the people in the Book of Mormon. I muse about why Shiblon might not have been overlooked by his father, and then spend some time talking about Corianton, idolatry, and us, as well as how true doctrine, understood, can help us repent and change. After all, it worked for Alma and Corianton pretty well :)

This week we get to see Alma in a mirror match against his evil alter-ego, Korihor. I think it's worth looking at the parallels between the two to understand that we could all go down either road, and it's our choice. Then, Alma assembles the missionary dream team to go lay the smackdown on the Zoramites, and he's almost speechless when he sees just how far they've gone down the apostasy rabbit hole. And yet...they're still his brothers and sisters, so he digs in and gets ready to preach the word to them.

This week the Lamanite converts change their names to the Anti-Nephi-Lehis (who are not anti-Nephi or anti-Lehi at all). This week we get Ammon's disarming ability to preach the gospel :) And we get one of my favorite scriptures, Alma 17:31, that represents a collection of symbols that help encapsulate missionary work as a whole for me. Be patient, it takes a minute to lay it all out. Also, some of the most beautiful examples of conversion found in the scriptures, complete with losing consciousness (your results may vary).

This week is a double-episode: we're covering two weeks of Come Follow Me readings by looking at Alma 8-16. That way we get the whole story of Alma and Amulek in Ammonihah. The conversion of Zeezrom (or "Z-money" as I will forever think of him now) echoes Alma's own conversion, and is evidence of the hope of salvation that the Book of Mormon witnesses.

This week we get one of the most famous sermons in the Book of Mormon - Alma 5 is the "have ye received his image in your countenances" message. But before we Alma can throw down against the pride of the Nephites at Zarahemla, we have to look back at chapter 4 to see what the problem was for them, and how it's the same problem with us (hint: it's pride). Come listen to how the three keys to better understand people of different faiths can teach us a way to humble ourselves when we're tempted to criticize people who believe differently from us (especially if we go to the same church!).

This week brings us to the end of an era as we get ready to say goodbye to Alma and King Mosiah, and begin the transition to the ministries of their children. Again, we get some great conversion stories this week, including the best story never told - how did some of the children of AMULON end up getting baptized by Alma in Zarahemla??? And why doesn't Mormon tell us more about it? At least he tells us plenty about Alma and the sons of Mosiah, as we continue to learn that we all must be born again through Jesus Christ to enter into His kingdom.

This week we read about Ammon and his elite group of Soldiers as they set off on an epic recon mission to find a lost colony of Nephites. They get more than they bargained for when their mission changes from recon to rescue of Limhi's people. This week we get the conclusion of King Benjamin's address and see one of the most amazing mass repentance and conversion examples in the Book of Mormon. This is a great illustration of the first principles and ordinances of the gospel: faith leading to repentance and culminating in covenant. Also, King Benjamin agrees with President Nelson on the importance of the name by which we call ourselves. It's always comforting when the prophets agree :)

This week we hear from King Benjamin (even though it's the Book of Mosiah, and he's the son of King Mosiah, and also the father of a King Mosiah...but yeah this doesn't really have anything to do with any Mosiah). He presents his take on the great paradox - we are unprofitable servants, but Heavenly Father keeps trying to hire us. We also get a beautiful verse about the two great commandments - when we're serving each other, we're really serving God. So a way to show love for God (the first great commandment) is to serve each other.

This week Enos finds hunting to be SO BORING that he takes up prayer instead :) Just kidding, this is a fantastic story about how Enos discovers for himself that the testimony of his father is true, and in the process learns to love his enemies. Jacob quotes Zenos to try and explain how the house of Israel will go from rejecting Jesus to being gathered back to Him. How does reading this passage looking for the emotions of the Master help us to be converted to His plan? Come see how Zenos and Enoch both describe a God who, albeit omnipotent, still weeps over our suffering when we ignore his invitation to experience joy with Him. Finally, Jacob wraps things up with a warning and says goodbye, only to come back and give us a perfect example (Sherem) of what he was warning us against.

This week, Nephi finishes up the prophecy/sermon that he started with his quotations of Isaiah last week. President Nelson has asked us to strengthen our testimonies of the Restoration in preparation for this April's General Conference, and Nephi helps explain how in that Restoration, Joseph Smith has to learn the gospel line upon line and precept upon precept (and so do we). He gives us his best intelligence brief on how Satan will try to either fill us with rage, lull us to laziness, or convince us he doesn't exist at all. And in doing so, he (mostly) convinces me not to hate the University of Utah anymore :)

This week Lehi gives his "last lecture" to his family before he dies. One of the all-time best sermons in the Book of Mormon. I'm mostly focusing on chapter 2, because his explanation of why the world has opposition in it is a major part of my beliefs.
