On todays episode of the podcast we get to hang out with Kim Ledgerwood. Kim was a police officer for 28 yrs and was diagnosed with PTSD and Anxiety. Kim thought she was functioning okay and had everything under control, not realizing her adiction was controlling her. Kim experienced a significant event that turned her life: professional, spiritual and personal completely upside-down. This caused her to start tackling her PTSD and addiction head on. In the midst of her battle, she found God. I loved my conversation with Kim and I believe you will walk away from her testimony feeling encouraged. Nothing is too big for our God!

Today we get to hang out with Janet Grillo. At 52-years-old, her life shattered as she entered a world that she never knew. She was once an unsuspecting wife and mother who learned about her husband’s secret life after he mysteriously died. To this day, she still questions whether his death was a suicide, assisted suicide, suggested suicide or murder.
Janet uncovered alleged Mafia ties and multiple affairs with other women. After falling into a deep depression with suicidal thoughts, she came to the realization that she needed to save herself from despair and hopelessness. She realized that she was not alone and desires to help others get through their pain.
In her book “God Promised Me Wings to Fly: Life for Survivors After Suicide,” Janet motivates and encourages others to seek help to find their purpose in life, even when things seem hopeless.

She is now a motivational coach who specializes in empowering women, during and after, their healing journey. Many lose their purpose and their fear of moving forward in life leaves them paralyzed. In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we get to hang out with Jennifer Perez. Jennifer shares her journey with infertility which led her and her husband Mace to become foster parents. Through foster care, they were blessed with their first son and then God had another blessing in store for them; Jennifer became pregnant with her first daughter Hannah, which they lost 31 hours after she was born. Jennifer talks about how she walked through grief of losing her first child, how to explain death to a young child, and dealing with the potiential of losing her second biological child Haven. Throughout Jennifers story, you can see how she clinged to her faith, despite everything around her falling apart. I believe you will walk away from her story feeling encouraged and seeing that Christ will walk with you through anything.
Jennifer is a wife to her middle school sweetheart Mace, and mom to 3 beautiful children. They live in Texas

For over 30 years, he has studied organized religion to find the elements that unite humanity and share the message with those who need it. Raised within the Christian church, Juan has turned to teachings about love over the years to find strength, understanding and hope.
As a child, he struggled with an undiagnosed learning disability that made school difficult. While being constantly compared to others, he was unable to identify his strengths.His low self-esteem and fear took away his hope for life. He joined the US Air Force out of high school in hopes just to survive. He found new confidence in service but could not separate himself from his disability. During his time in the Air Force, Juan committed his life to Christianity and sought to utilize the principle of love in his life. Juan is a devoted husband and lives outside of Washington, DC.

Cortney was thrust into the world of traumatic brain injury when her son Toran was severely injured during a football scrimmage. His prognosis was poor and the family faced lifelong disability. Against all odds, Toran recovered. This experience led the Moranic family to start T3 Charities which was established with the primary purpose of providing a helping hand to families suffering hardships, as well as to spread hope and awareness regarding football related traumatic brain injuries. This is an issue very close to his heart, as after losing the ability to walk in 2014 due to chronic illness, he has battled back to achieve a positive health outcome, and is now on the pathway to become medication free.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we get to hang out with another one of my favorite people, my friend Sharla Flood. Sharla is a wife, mom of two, organizer extraordinaire who shares her passion for the Lord through her testimony. She shares about the losses she experienced: parents divorce, loss of her mom. She shares how she did not really walk with God until her early 20's, where God literally spoke to her. Sharla's story shows us what lengths God will go to in order to get us to follow him. She then wraps up her story with a prayer for all of those who don't know Jesus, in hopes that they will follow Him.

September is a special month in my book. For one, it's the gateway to Fall, my favorite season of all time. My second reason for loving this month, it's my mom's birth month. I lost my mom to cancer ten years ago and my mom would have been 63 this year. In her honor, I am featuring stories from a few awesome cancer survivors that I have met from my own journey with cancer. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we get to hang out with my friend Pam. Pam wanted to remain anonymous for this interview but graciously shared her story of coping with anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. We talk about what to say and what not to say to someone going through mental health crisis. In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we get to hang out with Althea Richardson. Althea is a fellow podcaster; she is the host of WOVE Inspiration Podcast. She is the CEO/Founder of WOVE which stands for Women of Vision and Excellence. Althea has been in the ministry of helps for over 25 years. In her past, Althea’s life story included rape, molestation, divorce, domestic violence, abortion, and a long list of other tragedies. Despite these obstacles, she became qualified to share hope, inspiration, and encouragement when at the age of 41 she received a Bachelor’s in Psychology with cognates in Crisis Counseling, Biblical counseling, Life Coaching as well as a Master’s in human services, both received from Liberty University. Althea’s mission includes a women’s ministry, biblical counseling and life coaching services. Her mission is simple; help women to establish a firm foundation, operate in their purpose, and use their voice to help others by sharing their story of victory.
Althea currently resides in Houston, TX with her two teenagers, Joshua 17 and Victoria 15.

She sought help and by renewing her mind and working hard to capture her thoughts, she was able to conquer her eating disorder. Britney and I talk in-depth how powerful our thoughts can be and how important it to be in the word to guide us to have good thoughts.
I so relate with the struggle to take my thoughts captive and have seen the damage an out of control, negative thought life can cause. Britney's interview and book bring hope to those of us who struggle with negative self talk and negative thoughts.

April is the author of the book, No Message, Message where she chronicles her experience with her first born son Tyler being diagnosed with cancer before he turned 2 years old. April is very real in her book and shares how she truly felt dealing with getting pregnant for the first time, her sons diagnosis and eventual amputation of his foot. Despite these things, April has so much hope that spills out in her story. You will walk away from her interview knowing that no matter what mess you’re in, God is right there with you. And even if you think your story doesn’t matter, it can bring encouragement and hope to someone else.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we meet Kevin Hofman. Kevin is the author of Growing up Black in White, where he details at length what it was like growing up as a transracial adoptee. Kevin was the result of an affair and was nearly lost to abortion, but God had other plans. Kevin talks about what it was like reconnecting with his biological siblings on both sides of his family several decades later. He also discusses how his adopted family dealt with racism and how they did everything in their power to make sure he connected with others that were like him. I loved getting to connect with Kevin as we talked openly about racism, abortion, and how our past trials can truely be blessings in our future.
Kevin presently works with k-12 and universities in the area of inclusion. From such a unique worldview Kevin works with schools to create a place where ALL kids can thrive.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, I sit down with Sherman Burkehead. Sherman is the senior pastor and teacher at First Baptist Church of Boron. Sherman’s story is an interesting one as he was a former atheist. Despite that, God was able to reach him in the most unique way- through an anti abortion billboard on the way to work. From that day forward, Sherman dedicated his life to God.
Sherman is the author of the book, Distracted, finding God in a Chaotic World. Distractions is something all of us face and his book identifies several distractions that we encounter and how to tackle them head on. We also talk a bit about evangelism and fear.
I left my interview feeling so encouraged and ready to take on my distractions. I believe you will feel the same.
Pastor Sherman holds a degree in religion (Biblical and Theological Studies) and church ministry from Liberty university, and he is currently pursuing his master of Divinity at Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary. He is husband to Kimberly, who serves alongside him as the children’s director at First Baptist Church of Boron, and he is also a father of 5 and a grandfather of 2.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we continue to hang out with my friend, Danielle “DQ Quiroga. One morning while on her way to the office the unexpected happened and she found herself in the middle of a terrorist inspired act. She became one of the five victims of the UC Merced stabbings in 2015. I am blown away by all DQ has done since the incident, including becoming a Congressional award winner for the National Crime Victims caucus in 2017.
DQ continues to share details of the event and how it has changed her life. She struggled to have medical issues from the stabbing months prior that left her with some unexpected complications. She talks about recovery and living a new normal. As she was healing, several CA leaders and media reached out for her to share her story of survival with others. Although the circumstances were horrific, her attack led her to become heavily involved in victim advocacy rights and an encouragement to all those around her.
Heads up, there are graphic details regarding the attack and medical talk. If you have children or have difficulty with acts of violence or medical procedures, you may want to skip through some of this episode.
DQ is now an advisor at Fresno State. She is a dog mom to Oaklee. She is currently completing her Masters in Criminology.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we meet Ginny Wagner. Ginny is a mom of 4 and an entrepreneur. Ginny is a team lead and a consultant for MaskCara, a makeup company. In this episode, she talks about the myth of balance. She discusses being a planner and acceptance when our plan does not work.We dive into perfectionism and finding freedom in failure. In this episode ofThe Brave Podcast, we meet Tami Altice. Tami dealt with an illness that no doctor could truly pinpoint as a young mom with three littles. Tami had days of crippling fear due to her illness and not being able to properly care for her children. Doctors gave her the worst possible news; total disability by 40 and possibly not living much longer after that. Through years of suffering, Tami takes us on a journey of surrender. Tami shares what it is like to completely trust God, even when her body has failed her. If you’ve ever dealt with chronic illness, this is the episode to hear.
We also dive into spiritual warfare and knowing when the battle is yours and when the battle is Gods. Tami said something that really struck with me; sometimes we engage the enemy and it isn’t our battle. God fights for us. We also dive into abiding and resting with God. Her words were so helpful for me; I am a big doer and struggle with resting. If you relate to this in anyway, you don’t want to miss our conversation.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we continue our interview with Alena Orwin-Rogel. This is the final episode in my series with Alena. Just to recap, I’ve known Alena since elementary school. Through social media, we’ve been able to keep in touch and encourage each other as sisters in Christ. In 2018, Alena and her family were torn apart when her husband, Omar was deported to Mexico.
In our final episode, Alena talks about coming to grips with relocating her family to Mexico. She speaks honestly about her fear moving to an unknown place and leaving behind everything she ever knew to to reunite her family. I love the honesty and bravery Alena shares in this interview. Towards the end, you'll learn about a new opportunity for Alena and Omar, and how you can offer support.
I was nervous to share this story as immigration is a hot topic in our country and the views on it can be very polarized. But, when God tells you to do something, you must obey. I hope you will be encouraged listening to Alena’s story; her bravery amazes me and it was such an honor that she allowed me to talk to her.

Welcome friends! In this episode of the Brave Podcast, we get to chat again with my good friend, Katie Joy. Last week, Katie shared some intimate details about her past regarding brokenness. This week, Katie dives into marriage, and gives us a glimpse into her married life. She tells us how she met James, their struggles as a couple and where they are now after 18 years of marriage.
After we turned the microphone off, Katie and I talked about being creatives and some of the fears that come with putting yourself out there as a creative. Katie requested that we turn the microphone back on, and she shares some wisdom that you don’t want to miss. One of my big takeaways from our conversation was this: asking God not to have disdain for what you create. As creatives, we can have a lot of uncertainty and doubt regarding what we make. But when we ask God that we have a love for what we’re putting out there, it makes all the difference and allows us to be more free in our creativity.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we meet Nicole and Michael Moses. This interview was especially special to do as this would be my first couple interview! Michael (who we all call Moses) happened to be there during the interview with his wife Nikki and when he started giving input, I decided to pull him into it! I love how open and willing they both were while we chatted. In this interview we talked about grief, loss, faith, marriage and parenthood.

In this episode of The Brave Podcast, we meet Samantha Glenn. Sam is one of my favorite people. We met about 4 years ago at the Revival Center in Clovis. She has the biggest heart and brings joy to every room she enters.
At the time of this interview, Sam and I are attending our church’s women’s retreat: Queen Camp. She is my first live guest and I was so honored to have her on my show. When preparing for this interview, God said: “just let her talk!” I was a bit nervous doing that, but I am so glad I did. I hope you love my conversation with Sam as much as I did. I loved her vulnerability and willingness to share everything, even the hard things.
Sam has the gift of giving and is a major part of why this podcast exists. During our time together, Sam gives us a brief glimpse into her life: How she met her current husband Devin, how the birth of her daughter helped her return to God, her journey with Church of Christ and how she got involved with our current church the Revival Center.
Sam is a mom of two kiddos. She’s been married to Devin for 13 years and they are enjoying their new home in Clovis, CA.
