It’s almost Christmas time, so what a perfect opportunity to talk about the importance of community and connection. In this episode I chat with Jason Knight, the branding specialist that created the brand for my businesses. However, we are not talking about branding. We are talking about a movement that Jason started in his neighbourhood to foster a spirit of connection and community. ‘The Front Yard Family’ has led to so many positive outcomes in Jason’s local community and the concept can so easily be picked up and applied to our business communities, that I thought it a great conversation to share.
If this episode has inspired you to combine the silos of your life into the one circle ‘the integrated life’ you can check out the special offer that Jason mentioned in this interview here:https://www.askjasonknight.com/onecircle

Did you know that in Australia, over 13 million people have one or more chronic (long-term) eye conditions? And that over 575,000 are blind or vision impaired in Australia alone.
I certainly didn’t.
And I’m embarrassed to admit that until I met Kathryn Collins, a graphic designer that specialises in creating accessible documents, I had never really spared a thought about the importance of making marketing material more accessible.
In this episode, Kathryn talks about what document accessibility is and how we can all start to make our communications more inclusive.
If you are interested in checking out the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines – you can see them here: https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/
Also, if you want to make your Word docs more accessible, if you are using a Mac, you will see a big button that says ‘Check Accessibility’ in the tool bar in when you are in the ‘Review’ tab.

It’s easy for small business owners to dismiss the idea of investing in brand development as it’s a hard one to directly measure the outcome of and it always seems like a hefty investment to make in isolation.
However, it’s honestly one of the most important investments that you can ever make in your business. A brand helps create attention in the short term and build trust and loyalty in the long term.
In this episode I speak with Aynsley Campbell, a branding specialist that has worked with many of my small business clients.

Recently I surveyed 50 small business owners and asked them what the biggest challenge was when it came to creating their content marketing.

Well, we can’t add extra hours into the day, but we can save the amount of time it’s taking you to create this content by sharing the very system that we use to manage the content marketing, for our business as well as our clients. It seems that these days, just about everybody is a marketer.
It’s a broad term and there seems to be a hell of a lot of people who are NOT a marketer, claiming to be one. #justsayin
No wonder it’s confusing for small business owners to know who to listen to, which advice they should follow and who does what in the world of marketing.
So, when it comes to marketing, how do you sort the wheat from the chaff?
Well, one of the ways you can tell a professional marketer is by looking for the Certified Practicing Marketer (CPM) certification.
The CPM designation is the only peak professional benchmark of its kind for Marketers in the Asia-Pacific Region and the title officially recognises both formal education and the successful application of a marketer's marketing knowledge and skills in practice.
Kristie Atkins, Managing Partner at Wink, and I both tied as Certified Practicing Marketer of the Year in 2021 at the Australian Marketing Institutes Awards for Marketing Excellence.
And in this episode, we get together to shoot the breeze about the marketing industry and what best practice really looks like when it comes to marketing.

Have you ever wondered what you need to include in business award submission to make it the winning submission?
Awards are such an important trust point for your business, particularly if you are attempting to differentiate your brand in a crowded market, build credibility, give the media a reason to talk about you or to position your business as providing a premium offering.
However, writing a winning award submission is not all together easy. In fact, it’s a bit of a science.
One person who knows exactly how to write winning award submissions is Heather Marano from Green Door Co, a communications consultancy who specialise in exactly that.
In this episode Heather shares:
If winning a business or industry award is one of your goals for this year, then this is an episode you can’t miss.
If you’d like to get Heather and her team to help you with your business or industry award submissions, you can find her at https://greendoorco.com.au/ or on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/heathermarano/

In the third and final episode in our three-part series on branding, rather than speak with the branding experts, I speak to a fabulous small business owner who recently refreshed her brand.
Liz Dawson is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP), Pilates instructor and owner and director of two businesses; Kids Heart Pilates & Northside Allied Health.
I worked with Liz in early 2021 by creating a marketing strategy and plan for both of her businesses.
In the marketing strategy, I had suggested that the existing branding that Liz had in place for Kids Heart Pilates didn’t seem to accurately reflect the positioning of her fun and heart-felt business. The existing brand, while playful, was not as energising as it could be and frankly, needed to be in order to appeal to the various Kids Heart Pilates stakeholders that included the kids that absolutely love her pilates!!
Find out what happened next by listening to this inspiring story about how branding can truly energise a small business.

Branding can mean many things to different people. Some people think that a company's brand is referring to its logo and the colours they use in the marketing collateral.
Some people think of branding as marketing.
Some people think brand refers to the reputation of a company.
And you know what? All of these definitions are true. Brand incorporates all of these.
In this episode, I talk with Jodie de Vries, Managing Director of the multi-award-winning branding agency; Tiny Hunter. Jodie describes herself as part creative, part nerd. She has a lifelong love of problem-solving and thrives on the power of design and collaboration to transform businesses.
In our chat, Jodie talks about the difference between branding and marketing, she shares what the foundations of an excellent brand are and how having a powerful brand can financially and otherwise benefit a small business.
Jodie also recommends who in the business should be stewarding the brand as well as some of the elements of branding that can sometimes be overlooked.

Six of the most frequently asked questions I get asked about marketing are: When it comes to marketing – where on earth do I start? Which marketing channel should I use? How can I ensure a consistent source of leads / customers? When is the best time to post on social media? Do I really need a blog – do I really need to do reels? How do I know if my marketing is working?
And in this episode, I answer them all for you!

One of the biggest challenges small business owners face when it comes to getting their marketing done is ‘not having the time.’
A small business owner typically wears many hats and can often feel stretched between pillar and post on a daily basis. And if we are not careful, we can fall into spending our days being ‘busy’ and yet being completely unproductive.
The trouble is, as far as I know, no-one has worked out yet how to fit that additional hour into the day so that we are able to get everything done that we need to.
We are stuck with our 24 hours and our 7 days a week.
And once we accept that, we can start to make choices about how we prioritise our tasks within those 24 hours.
Time management is one of the most important skills for us as business leaders to master if we want to actually ensure that we are working on meaningful tasks.

Running a small business can be pretty challenging. Particularly over the last couple of years where uncertainty has run fairly rife, and we’ve all had to embrace the art of changing plans at the drop of a hat.
Something that Christine Khor strongly believes is that if we are tapped into a strong sense of purpose, a compelling mission and vision or a why, we actually manage to push through the challenges more successfully.
When we can inspire others with our purpose, we tackle these challenges with more support.
In this episode Christine and I talk about how as marketers, it’s our role to communicate this purpose. And there’s a few ways that we can do this, including strategically partnering with another organisation that aligns with your purpose.
If you are interested in attending The Hunger Project Immersion weekend in May 2022, then you can find out more about it and express your interest here https://join.thp.org.au/event/victorian-leadership-weekend

We are doing business differently in 2022. It’s our mission to put professional marketing on the agenda for every small business in regional Australia and I felt that the existing way that we were working with small businesses was not going to allow us to achieve this mission.
So I have a new plan, and you can hear all about it in this episode.

I’ve always been a believer in the power of networking. I’d go as far as to say that I’ve built my business by networking.
However, when I met Rachel Lang from Plan Japan, I was blown away by just how powerful building networks and connections can be in business.
Rachel Lang is an expert in Japanese culture and customs. She is a fluent Japanese speaker who has worked as a professional interpreter and translator. She is also one of the most impressive networkers I have ever met!
Rachel has built an incredibly unique and successful travel business by simply connecting and building relationships with some of the most powerful and successful people in Japan.
As a result, she can now run travel tours that provide her guests with unparalleled cultural and dining experiences that are completely off-limits to the average tourist. Actually they are completely off limits to most people in Japan as well.
If you have ever wondered what you need to do to be able to network effectively, then this is definitely an episode worth listening to!

Do you ever wonder how you can measure the return on investment of the sponsorships that your small business chooses to invest in?
Sponsoring a charity or a sporting club or an event, can be a great branding exercise for your small business if it is aligned correctly and cleverly executed.
In regional areas, it’s often the small businesses that will be the most prolific with their support of local initiatives. And this sponsorship is so greatly appreciated.
So, to ensure that sponsorship creates a win win for both your business and for the organisations that need sponsoring, it makes sense to measure whether your sponsorship dollars are both helping the cause that you are supporting as well as helping your business by positioning you as a community centric brand.
Listen to this episode to learn ten ways that you can easily measure whether your sponsorship is truly making an impact.

DONE Coffee is a coffee company based on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Surfers by passion, their company has a relaxed vibe, but they are serious about the service that they provide for their customers.
DONE Coffee sells coffee and other complimentary products to cafes around the region and beyond. They also provide training and consulting services to these cafes and have always prided themselves on their commitment to roll up their sleeves and support their customers in every way that they can.
Recently, they decided to grow the business by expanding into the retail market. And while they had been doing bits and pieces with their marketing while working in the business to business space, approaching a new market segment was going to need a little more thought and planning.
So, we worked with the DONE crew to put a marketing strategy and plan together and this was the first time they had done this. So, I thought I would chat to Stewie about how he thought that his marketing strategy and plan would now set them up for marketing success.

Cathy Burke believes that leadership potential rests within every person, every community and every organisation. It just needs to be activated. Cathy works with people in organisations throughout the world to help them develop a leaders mindset.
In her previous life as Australian CEO and Global Vice President of The Hunger Project, Cathy transformed mindsets and developed leaders as the foundation of her work in villages around the world. Even in the most difficult conditions, time and again people without anything were able to tap into the power of their mindset to achieve remarkable outcomes in their communities.
In this season where we are revealing what goes on behind the scenes in the work that we do, I thought it pertinent to talk about some of the personal development that I have done recently that supports my growth as a human but also as a business owner and of course within my profession as a marketer.
Recently, I have felt that any stagnation, or any hurdles that were facing me in my profession and in my business, were not necessarily due to a lack of business and marketing skills, they have been due to a lacking mindset.
I recently completed Cathy’s Rising program and I am now aware of the significant role of mindset. In fact, I’d even go as far to say, that in hindsight, if I knew then what I know now, I would not even bother spending any money on any of the many other professional development programs I have done, until I got my mindset in the right spot.
In this episode, Cathy beautifully explains the role that mindset can play to help you lead a bigger life.

There’s been a couple of times this year when we have had to prepare a communication plan for two very unfortunate situations. One was a shock passing of a client’s team member. The other was managing customer expectations for a hospitality venue as they prepared to switch from allowing everyone in the community in, to only being able to allow vaccinated community members in as part of the COVID Roadmap to Recovery in NSW.
When emotions are running high about a topic, it is so important that you approach your communications with empathy, clarity and confidence.
In this episode, I run through four things that you can do to ensure that your communications around a difficult message manage to deliver the news professionally and empathetically.

In my experience, the importance of a small business website is often severely underestimated by many small business owners. I believe that your website is like the engine room of your marketing eco system. It should play an active role in your marketing and plug into your business at a strategic level.
However, when it comes to creating a best-practice website, a lot of non-webby people simply don’t know what they don’t know.
So, I’m chatting with the ever-delightful Simon Bank from WebStudio in this episode. Simon is one of the marketing experts in the How To Do Marketing Academy. He has been in the web industry for over 17 years and he shares the same opinion as me – websites are way more than a nice design and a bit of code.
Simon is going shed a light on some of the webby stuff that you may not know that you don’t know. So as always, grab a pen and paper and get ready for some useful info about how to create a best-practice, small business website.

One of the most effective ways for me to implement a new habit or to achieve a big goal that I set is to ensure that I have some sort of accountability framework supporting me.
Whether that be a person, or people, formal or informal or it might be an App that I need to report into every week. Having these points of accountability helps to keep me on track.
So it’s little wonder that when Nic McClanachan told me about her business; The Accountability Circle, I was there in a heartbeat.
The Accountability Circle is a framework that allows female business owners to connect, challenge themselves, make a commitment and get support.
So why is the notion of being held accountable such a powerful tool when it comes to helping us achieve in life? Find out in this episode with the lovely Nic McClanachan.

The definition of marketing success is getting the right message in front of the right customer at the right time.
So how do we know what that message should be? How do we know what the right customer looks like? And how do we know the right channel and timing to use to place our message in their path so they notice us?
We ask our customers of course.
Your customer has thousands of messages and businesses and people and news and content that’s dropping into their brain each day and forming as their own private perspective based on their lived and learned experiences. In order for your marketing message to make an impact in their already overwhelmed brain, we need to be able to gain a better understanding of their world view and how we can position ourselves within this.
Customer research is a non-negotiable in my marketing planning process. For every marketing plan that I develop, I ensure that we have gone out and asked our customers the right question in order to the insight that we need to effectively plan our marketing.
While every business and every situation differs, there are 10 common questions that we will generally ask in every customer research project.
These help us define exactly how we get the right message to the right person at the right time. Grab a pen and paper, because if you don’t know how your customers would answer these ten questions, then I’d suggest that you plan to go out and ask them if you want your marketing to truly succeed.

Facebook Groups can be notoriously hard to manage. They can be such a powerful tool to engage with your community and provide a really valuable brand touchpoint, however they can be a lot of work.
This is an area where I personally have struggled, so I went on the hunt for someone who was doing it well and who would be willing to share any hot tips!
Found her! Rebecca Bodman (aka Bods) has worked at Business Chicks for ten years and is the Head of Community Engagement. There are many amazing feathers to Bods cap, but one of her amazing feats at Business Chicks is the management of their community 23.4k strong Facebook Group.
So in this ep, Bods talks about how they use their Facebook Group successfully as an extension of their incredible brand.

In his book The Ultimate Sales Machine, Chet Holmes published a ‘buyer pyramid’ which suggested that at any one time, only 3% of your target audience will be ready to buy.
The remaining 97% fall into the categories below:
6% to 7% of people are ‘open to considering such a purchase’.
30% of people are not thinking about it at this time.
30% of people don’t ‘believe’ they are interested (based on the info they have at hand).
30% of people are definitely not interested.
In order for you to convince the 3% of people who are purchase ready, plus the 6-7% of people open to considering such a purchase you will need to ensure those touch points are present by taking a persistent and consistent approach to your marketing and advertising.

Despite what it seems, not everyone is a marketer. While there are a lot of people out there claiming to know boats when it comes to this hugely important pillar of your small business, the reality is, they wouldn't know your positioning statement from your pricing strategy. So as we draw to the close of FY 20/21 and plan for cost efficiencies in our next financial year's marketing investment, I recommend adding an additional layer of scrutiny around who you turn to for marketing advice. This simple exercise could save or make you a fortune!

When you are looking at marketing tactically, not strategically, it’s very easy to assess achievement with output as opposed to outcomes.
It’s not hard to post something on Facebook. It’s much harder to drive bottom-line results using Facebook as a channel.
When you are planning your marketing and certainly when you are measuring it, be sure to measure the right activity; i.e. outcomes instead of output.

A common question that I often get from small business owners is:
"How can I ensure that my marketing is attracting the right type of customer?"
This is a great question because your business is not for everyone and the wrong type of customer can be a very expensive drain on your business.
I recently realised that one of my marketing channels was generating the wrong type of customer. This meant I was spending a lot of time talking on the phone to people who were simply never going to buy from me. This is not a productive way to spend my time, so I immediately worked out a way to tweak this marketing channel so that it communicated more clearly which clients we are best suited to.
And in this episode of #snacktime, you can find out how I did just this.

How does what you wear affect your daily interactions with the people you do business with?
How you present yourself contributes significantly to people’s first impressions of you. It tells people a visual story about you. How you dress and style yourself can be seen as an expression of your inner being and in business, your personal brand.
In this episode I speak with the fabulous Vanessa Lawrence from The Style Vibe. Vanessa is a personal stylist who works predominantly with corporate and professional women to help them feel more confident and empowered within themselves by developing their personal style.
And she is amazing at what she does. She has helped so many women (and a few dudes) identify and then really own their unique sense of style so that they can worry less about what they look like, and more about creating successful outcomes in their professional and personal lives.
Vanessa has some incredibly helpful and practical tips about how you can create and nail your personal style so that you feel more confident and content.

If I was to ask any of your customers which organisations that your small business sponsors, would they be able to tell me the answer?
One of the best things about small businesses based in regional Australia, is that when it comes to supporting local charities and fund-raisers, you are by far the most generous!
However, what I see happen way too often, is that business sponsorships and donations often happen sporadically and spontaneously. From a philanthropic perspective, this is fine. However, from a strategic business perspective, there are really smart ways that you can leverage your generosity so that it strengthens your brand.
Find out how in this episode of #snacktime.

Clinton Griffiths is a physio. He is also a small business owner. He runs his own physio practice in Southern Sydney in a suburb called Cronulla.
He runs a fabulous practice with a great team, and one of the most amazing things he has achieved as a business owner is the relaxed and friendly culture that he has built.
This culture runs strongly throughout every touchpoint of the business; including his team, and the overall vibe within the practice itself. A great team and a great level of service has meant that Clinton has always experienced a really healthy and steady flow of word-of-mouth referrals.
However, while Clinton thought this was great – he wanted to be a bit more in charge of his own destiny when it came to marketing.
Word-of-mouth referrals are always fantastic, however he knew he needed more than that to grow his business further. He knew that there were still plenty of people outside those that were being referred that could potentially be perfect clients for his clinic.
Plus, he was always just a little bit nervous about what would happen if the word of mouth referrals dried up? He just didn’t really feel that he had as much control over that form of marketing that he would like to have.
So, in June last year, Clinton jumped on board with our How to do Marketing Academy. Since then he’s grown his revenue by 30% using a marketing system that allows him to have much more control over his own destiny than simply relying on word of mouth.
Listen to this episode to find out exactly how he has achieved this.

Customer testimonials are an incredibly powerful piece of content that can often be underestimated by small business owners.
They help to build trust by providing a third-party perspective about your business. You can rave on about how wonderful your business is until you are blue in the face, but if other people can rave about your business for you, it's infinitely more powerful!
So how do you manage to get a really powerful testimonial from your customers? And once you have them, where do you display them?

She had always had marketing in the back of her mind as she was working on her business, but there had never really been a catalyst or a compelling reason to invest in it. Fast-forward to today and Leonie has a fantastic content marketing system in place that truly leverages her strengths and her passions.

One of the single biggest challenges that I see small business owners facing when it comes to publishing thought-leadership content is fear.
Fear of saying the wrong thing Fear of being judged by your contemporaries Fear of seeming to be unprofessional Fear of looking like a shameless self-promoter Fear of ‘annoying’ people by showing up in people’s feed too often Fear of creating too much work for yourself by positioning yourself as the key person in your business Fear of no-one responding to your content
I see you and I get it. However, there are things that we can do to ensure that your greatest fears about getting yourself out there on the public stage that is social media, are not realised.
In this episode, I address all of the above fears and how you can overcome these with a switch of mindset, a reality check or actions that will ensure your content marketing only helps to position your business and your personal brand in a positive light.

Hilary O’Dwyer is a Virtual CFO. She is a numbers ninja and is founder of Titian Consulting and in mid 2020, Hilary realised that if she wanted to grow her business and her brand to extend beyond her natural network, she was going to need to do some marketing.
At this point, Hilary had already secured some great client retainer work and was receiving some word-of-mouth referrals from this work as well as her existing business network. However, Hilary’s plans for her business were to increase the work she was getting so that she could perhaps look at employing one or two more team members.
The problem was, when it came to marketing, she just didn’t know where to start. When she started to think about the idea of getting herself out there using social media, she became quite overwhelmed at the thought.
Fortunately for us both, Hilary attended the Marketing Masterclass that I presented to the Business Chicks network and within a week, she had signed up to my How to do Marketing Academy.
So for the past 9 months, Hilary has been planning and implementing the marketing for her business, and listeners, she is absolutely rocking it!
With a small budget and limited time to spend on her marketing, Hilary has been focusing on the marketing activity that will help her to become more visible online, including some killer content marketing which she is publishing out via LinkedIn…

In 2019, Ross Cargill, Managing Director of a traffic control and labour hire business based on the Mid North Coast of NSW, had a problem.
He had noticed that recently, there had been an increase in his traffic control staff coming to him expressing concerns for their safety.
Too often now, they were working on road sites where drivers, on their mobile phones or simply just driving way too quickly, were failing to notice safety signs on roadworks and as a result, they tearing through roadwork sites at dangerous speeds, causing near fatal accidents.
The traffic controllers had multiple stories about having to jump into the verge of the road to avoid a speeding car who was travelling too fast to control their vehicle through the site.
To help solve this problem, Ross set aside a portion of his small marketing budget to help get a safety message out to the local community that would help the drivers in the local community understand the importance of practicing safe driving around road sites.
With a short emotive video staring one of Men at Works much-loved traffic controllers and a tonne of support from the Men at Work crew, we managed to get one Facebook post to reach over 100,000 drivers on the Mid North Coast.
From this post, we gained media coverage that helped to amplify our message and as an additional benefit, Men at Work grew their digital presence by 50% and were also able to pick up a new project that saw them achieve a return on investment for their marketing of x 9.
Find out how we managed to achieve all of this (and a small budget marketing award to boot) in this episode of the How to do Marketing Show.

Content Burnout: When you have an overwhelming desire to stop producing content that promotes your business.
In this episode I share a story of my own content burnout experience. There were a few factors that led to this for me, but this is certainly not a unique situation. I see this happen in small business all the time.
Ensuring that you deliver a consistent stream of marketing is really important though so it’s never a good idea to just stop. And there are a few things that you can do (and that I did) to ensure that experiencing content burnout doesn’t prohibit you from achieving marketing success.
In particular, we address the following reasons for content burnout: Getting busy in your business Getting bored with your content Running out of things to say Not seeing the results of your content Comparing yourself to others
All of the above will happen with your marketing at some point or another, but I share some suggestions how to not let these derail your efforts.

If you were to ask any member of your team what your brand stood for, or who your perfect customer is or even what makes your business truly different to your competitors, would they know the answer? And more importantly, if you were to go and ask several of your team these same questions, would you get a consistent answer?
Ensuring that your team both knows and understands and is also really passionate about your business is one really cost-effective way to help create a solid and successful brand.
If you are investing into marketing to external stakeholders and customers, it makes complete sense to market to your internal team.

I can’t recommend measuring your marketing efforts rigorously and regularly highly enough. There is so much data that is easily available for us to access and review so that we can make better decisions about our marketing – it’s just a matter of knowing what metrics to look for and where to look!
Kate Cook; otherwise known as the ‘marketing attribution gal’ is a marketer who specialises purely in marketing measurement.
In this episode we talk about the scope of marketing measurement, and the challenges and the opportunities that analysing data can bring to a small business.
This discussion will give you a good idea of what we are trying to achieve by measuring your marketing and some of the reasons that you should absolutely incorporate this into your small business operations. In fact; Kate recommends that you adopt documenting marketing measurement as seriously as you document your monthly accounting numbers. I couldn’t agree with this more!
We talk about how you can keep track of short term results that are driven by your marketing as well as how you can track longer term objectives such as marketing that is designed to build your brand.
So if you are all about making smarter marketing decisions in 2021, then I suggest you take a listen to this great episode with Kate Cook from SPT Agency.

It's easy to beat yourself up for not getting everything on your marketing to-do list. Particularly at a time of year when everything gets a little crazy. Truth is, if you miss posting to social for a week or skip an email newsletter once in a while, it's not the end of the world. In fact, your tribe may not even notice - because they're pretty busy too.
But if you consistently fail to show up, you drop out of sight. And that can be dangerous if you are looking to grow your business.
Here are some tips to keep you on track to remain consistent with your marketing efforts.

I’m a total fan girl of my guest today. In my opinion, her marketing is some of the best out there. For years, I have watched on in awe as Pip Brett, the creative mind behind popular homewares and clothing store Jumbled, has grown her amazing business both online and off.
Every marketing and brand touchpoint that I have with her business inspires to want to be part of her tribe. And because she has such amazing marketing, I buy stuff from her all of the time. And that, my friend, is exactly what great small business marketing is all about!
As her business has evolved over the years, Pip has cleverly introduced different marketing channels and innovative approaches to her creative. And every time she does, she nails it! Pip has amassed over 126 thousand Instagram followers, she sends bi weekly emails, she produces a podcast, her website is amazing and she is also a huge fan of creating marketing and business partnerships.
In this episode she generously shares her approach to all of these marketing channels.
What I love most about Pip’s marketing content that she creates for Jumbled is how much energy and passion it exudes. It’s infectious. Pip also lets us in on how she manages to create this and how it has ultimately led to her building one of regional Australia’s best retail success stories.

Great copy can convert a website visitor into a sale. A humming headline can stop people in their thumb-scrolling social media tracks.
And bad copy can be down-right disastrous. Long winded, ill-considered copy runs the risk of boring the pants off your reader, and let’s face it, it’s pretty easy for people to click out of your website and into the next one if you have failed to engage them or if you have confused them with your words.
Marketing copywriter Jody Carey joins me today to share her top, very awesome tips for writing copy for some of the typical small business marketing touchpoints; websites, blogs, social media and video scripts.
Jody is a marketer turned copywriter who helps small businesses promote their brand through effective marketing content.
Jody worked as a communications project manager at 3M in the United States where she was responsible for sales campaigns and product launches of international brands that you’ll likely find at Bunnings. Brands such as Scotch brand adhesives, Post-it stationary products and Scotchgard cleaning chemicals. Since moving to Australia six years ago, she’s turned her attention to the copywriting and content writing side of marketing.
She believes that everyone has a story to tell and customers are ready to listen.
And when it comes to copywriting, she has some easy to follow and practical advice for small business owners that you can start implementing right now.

Inspiring your customers to not just talk about your business, but to RAVE about your business is something that we can influence both by the way we do business and how we apply our marketing.
The difference between a raving fan and a somewhat indifferent customer can be the difference in some serious bottom line revenue. But how do you know if your customers are talking about you. And if they are, what they are saying? There are a couple of ways we can tell. Listen to this episode of #snacktime to find out. :-)

I’m a HUGE fan of events. I love attending them, I love organising them and most of all, I LOVE how they can bring together businesses and their customers to experience a really rich and engaging interaction.
Events will feature in most of my marketing plans for clients. Whether they be information seminars, industry conferences, networking sessions or annual VIP days where a business takes a bunch of their best clients for an afternoon at the local races, events can be a really powerful way to create engagement and build relationships.
But due to social distance and travel restriction, the events we once knew and loved have transitioned from offline and in-person to online.
This creates tremendous opportunity as it opens up the attendance of events to people based anywhere in the world. It also presents a few challenges – like how do you create the same level of energy and engagement with an online event?
In this episode, we speak with the CEO of Icon Corporate Events; Eyob Yesus. Eyob has been so busy this year working out how to transition his business from providing offline events to virtual events. Eyob has a career spanning more than 15 years in the events industry. He and his team at Icon Corporate events provide corporate event management services for businesses that want to deliver powerful, meaningful and engaging experiences to connect with people.
In this chat, Eyob shares what events look like right now and how they will likely progress into the future. He shares how we can ensure that we are still leveraging events to achieve our marketing goals, even if we are executing these events online.

Facebook Advertising is an awesome tool for small business. It's hugely cost-effective and more importantly, it delivers results!
The trouble is, not a lot of small businesses know about it. While boosting your Facebook posts is one form of Facebook advertising, it's only a scratch on what's actually possible using the platform.
We use Facebook Advertising a lot, not only for our business but for our clients as well. Some of the outcomes that you can achieve with Facebook Ads, are to gain email subscribers, drive online sales and of course increase the awareness of, and the engagement with, your business.
In fact, I think you can pretty much achieve success at all levels of the marketing funnel using Facebook advertising.
To help tackle the Facebook Advertising topic is a fabulous Facebook Advertising expert; Karyn Parkinson.
Karyn started her first business when she was 24. As a young, enthusiastic and inexperienced entrepreneur she wasted over $80,000 on mainstream advertising in her first year! So she first discovered Facebook as a way to keep promoting my business when she ran out of money.
Now, through her business Unstoppable Ecommerce, she helps businesses, big and small, to run Facebook advertising funnels to grow traffic to their site and increase their bottom line.
In this chat, Karyn shares some valuable tips around how you can avoid some of the costly mistakes that she did and also how you can really optimise your use of the Facebook Advertising platform to drive big results for your business.

From the moment I landed on this Instagram grid, I was captivated... The images alone just transported me immediately to the remote far west corner of Tasmania where this beautifully renovated little shack is located, Captain's Rest.
I then learnt more about the owner, Sarah Andrews. Sarah purchased the shack years ago and transformed it into this magical space. And now, this remote little shack on the edge of the earth is one of the world’s most sought after Airbnb accommodation listings.
As a result of her success with Captain's Rest, Sarah soon had enquiries flooding in from other aspiring Airbnb providers, wanting to know how she created this amazing business.
Sarah now runs 'The Hosting Masterclass' showing people how to achieve this. And boy has she achieved some phenomenal results.
She has an incredible story with such a diverse background of experience, including a stint running her own marketing agency. But I want her to tell you that so please sit and listen to the incredible Sarah Andrews.

What would you do if one day, you received a cease and desist letter in the mail telling you that you could no longer use your business name as it was trademarked to be used by someone else?
You would have no choice but to change your business name and all of your branding. All of that investment into your brand would be lost. More importantly, you’d have to think of another name!
And if you have your brand on vehicles and signage and uniforms etc. that’s a bloody expensive exercise to replace all of that.
To avoid that nightmare scenario coming true, you may need to consider trademarking your brand. And in this episode, we speak with Binh Rey; an Associate Trademark Attorney with Baxter IP who will talk us through this very exercise.
Binh is known in the industry for her brand marketing and protection knowledge. She works with many branding and advertising agencies, helping to research and establish brand name availability to determine which can be easily registered and effectively protected both now and in the future.
I ask Binh loads of questions around what a trademark is exactly, what do they protect and what don’t they protect. Who should get one, who shouldn’t?
If you haven't protected your brand with a trademark yet, then this episode is definitely worth a listen!

Out of all of the marketing and advertising channels that small business have available to them, social media is the channel that I geek out on the most.
There are so many reasons why I think social media is such a high performing, cost-effective communication channel for small business. There's so much that you achieve with it.
And while the good majority of small businesses are using Facebook and Instagram to some degree, there are few who are leveraging the full power of these channels.
AND there are some seriously underutilised social media channels such as YouTube that small businesses could be leveraging.
So to help motivate you to really explore what else you could be achieving in the social media space, we are going to delve into the opportunities that social media marketing presents for small business with James Fitzgerald, the Executive Director of Programing and founder of SMK: which stands for Social Media Knowledge.
SMK is a specialist learning and development organisation with unrivalled expertise in assisting companies with digital transformation. SMK exists to help businesses use social media, mobile and digital channels more effectively.
Leading over 100 full day social media, mobile, digital and content marketing training courses in Asia Pacific every year, SMK courses are attended by thousands of senior marketing and communications professionals from the world’s leading brands, agencies and organisations.
James is like a walking and talking social media fact machine. He literally knows everything about social media and boy-oh-boy does he share some nuggets in this interview so make sure you grab your pen and paper.
Topics that we talk about include; which social media channels present what opportunities, the difference of results between posting videos on Facebook versus YouTube, why YouTube is a social media channel that may actually be a very relevant consideration for small businesses. We talk about the importance of diversification of your digital channels and what marketing objectives you can be achieving using the various channels.

The marketing eco-system is what we use to plot out our client's marketing activity once we have developed their strategy. Just like any eco-system, the marketing eco-system comprises of many different elements that all work together.
The ecosystem that we work to is based around the marketing funnel that steers your target audience on the journey from becoming aware of your business, all the way through to purchasing from your business and then going on to rave about your business to their family and friends.
So it's important for the marketing eco-system to have elements that drive awareness, consideration, conversion and word-of-mouth.....

There are many small businesses that have had their plans interrupted this year by COVID. Printhie Wines, based in Orange NSW is no exception. Not only have they had to deal with COVID this year, but they were also coming off the back of dealing with severe drought that had lasted for a long time PLUS the bushfires that engulfed parts of New South Wales over the summer.
Emily Swift joined her husband in their family business in 2018 as their Marketing Manager. Having worked as a strategic marketer in the agribusiness and utility sectors for over 20 years, she made the leap into small business, just in time to have to navigate possible one of the toughest years that the winery has faced.
In this interview with Em, we find out all about the world of wine marketing. We talk about the power of harnessing strategic local partnerships AND about how some quick thinking in the COVID crisis produced some amazing marketing results for Printhie Winery.

Your database of email subscribers stands to be one of your small businesses' biggest digital assets. These are people that have opted to hear from you. They want to be part of your tribe. An engaged email subscriber base will engage with your content and there is a good chance, if they are opening your emails regularly and value the content, that they will buy from you. Multiple times even!
Given the value of this asset, it makes sense to keep it clean and current so that you are not wasting your precious time and money talking to people who are not reading!
I explain exactly how you can do this in this ep of snack time.

Have you been wondering about how you can use social media a little more creatively? Do you have an appetite for extending your content marketing beyond the content that you publish via your own channels?
Well, dare I say it, but influencer marketing may be just the marketing tactic to explore!
Now, before you default to 'No, my product or service does not need to be sold by beautiful bikini babes on Instagram,' I encourage you to listen to this episode featuring influencer marketing specialist; Neal Schaffer.
Neal is a leading authority on helping businesses with digital marketing - including social media marketing strategy, influencer marketing, and social selling initiatives.
He is the author of four books, the latest dedicated to the topic of influencer marketing. It’s called the Age of Influence.
Neal provides a perspective to influencer marketing that shows that this tactic has a far broader and more powerful scope than beautiful people on Instagram selling tanning lotion.
Influencer marketing can be used really effectively by B2B businesses AND for small businesses. As you will find out, there are in fact many influencers that we may be able to tap into, sitting right under our noses.

When I asked the How to do Marketing Facebook Group if they had any questions for Cristian Trujillo before I interviewed him, there were plenty!
How long should our videos be?
What equipment do we need?
Is there a formula or framework for the content in the video?
Cristian answers all of these and also tells us:
how to plan for your video production,
what the three essential ingredients to a quality video are,
how to bring out the best in the people that you get to star in your video
and much, much more.
Videos are such a great way to help your audience get to know, like and trust you. And the stats really back up the need for video to be a huge contender in your marketing arsenal. For example, did you know:
53% of customers engage with a brand after watching a video on social media
68% of people prefer video over text when learning about a product or service (Wyzowl, 2019)
Product videos can increase purchases by 144%. (Neil Patel, 2017)
Cristian runs video strategy workshops (that's how I met him) and they teach you everything you need to know about this medium. You can find out more about Cristian's Video Workshops here. Or you can connect with Cristian on LinkedIn here.

A beautiful product that fills a gap in the market is always going to be much easier to convince people to buy. Ensure that product is priced correctly and it is easy for your customer to get their hands on and it becomes even easier to influence people to not only buy the product, but to start talking about it.
When your product hits the spot with your customers in this way, the promotion (marketing and advertising) that you invest in to tell people about this product is going to be significantly more effective.
Conversely, if your product or service has not been created with your customer in mind, it is over or underpriced and hard for customers to get hold of, your marketing spend will be incredibly expensive and most likely largely ineffective.
Sarah Shepherd launched women’s sleepwear brand Hybernate in late 2018 with her business partner, Abby Badman. Before this, Sarah was working in corporate marketing. Growing up with entrepreneurial parents, she always knew she wanted to start her own business one day. Now Hybernate is only 18 months old and is experiencing fast growth and an incredibly loyal customer base.
Her success can be put down to the meticulous planning that she and Abby devoted to getting the product, price, place and promotion just right.
You can find Hybernate on Instagram here. Or the website is here.
