Hasbro, the Providence-based toy maker of the Star Wars action figure line, has announced mass layoffs due to inflation and sluggish sales. Is that the only reason for the downturn in business? Could it be the constant barrage of repacks and repaints on multiple toy lines in an effort to keep costs down? Is the reliance of consumers buying without thinking about the price tag really the best strategy? On this episode of the Smugglers’ Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason dissect this news and try to decipher its meaning. Nearly a year ago, Hasbro announced a new strategy to push prices and double their profit margins - was that a step too far? As they discuss what this means, it’s important to remember 1,100 people are losing their livelihood. Several toy lines do it. Hotwheels, Funko, and Jazwares all participate in the practice. They developed a toy line for the masses, but then make a limited number of items that collectors must discover, by chance, by being at the right store during the right time. These are called chase items - items that could require multiple store visits to track down. With many people chasing a limited item, it gets tiring fast. Toy company’s say that this makes their toy line more collectible - but is that an accurate description of their practice? If you’re like the hosts of the Smugglers’ Galaxy Podcast, you may find the practice to be more frustrating than beneficial. The end of Disney+'s latest Star Wars show, Ahsoka, left characters with unfinished arcs. Ahsoka and Sabine are trapped on another planet, and Baylon is still searching for a raw power trembling through the force. Baylon is shown standing on the outstretched hand of a mountain-sized sculpture, gazing into the distance. Fans of the Clone Wars recognized the face of the statue as The Father, a force god who controls the balance between his son and daughter. The Haslab Ghost funded within days of being announced. With a 45-day window to back the project, it only needed five of those days. With such a successful start to the project, it begs the question - was the Ghost a good Haslab project? Haslab was created to provide fans the possibility to own dream collectables. For some, The Ghost is a dream vehicle to add to their collection. But if enough people support this right away, shouldn’t this just be a normally released vehicle? And if so, was the Rancor a better Haslab project because it didn’t get funded?
Glen and Jason discuss this and more on this episode of the Smugglers’ Galaxy podcast. It's a great day to celebrate on the Smugglers' Galaxy Podcast. First of all, San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) is happening and there is a ton of Star Wars collecting news coming out of it. Hasbro will release a The Vintage Collection Salacious Crumb on card back. That's right! They're going to rerelease VC66! Jason takes a moment to celebrate before moving on with the news and discussing the latest Haslab project, Hasbro's campaign funded toy. The Vintage Collection Ghost promises to be the largest vehicle produced by Hasbro since The Sail Barge. The Ghost, as seen in Star Wars Rebels, could come with four The Vintage Collection figures. Glen gushes his love for this project and hopes all tiers become unlocked.
Over the past weekend, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors (Gaswc) held it’s annual summer social, a 3-day event akin to a family reunion. Collectors, who see one another (maybe) once a year, get together to catch up, share a laugh, and talk Star Wars collecting. This years event was held a super-collector, and generous spirit, Narayan’s house. Glen and Jason, fresh from the event, discuss the games, toys, special guests, and tireless nights, that went into this event! Friday started with a group dinner with dessert. Saturday was the action-packed social, with a special presentation from a toy creator, room sales and more, and Sunday was the Kennesaw Run, a collection in three houses about 10 miles from one another. Glen, Tim, and Jason open up their collection so people can check them out at their pace during the morning hours! In addition to that, they talk the Ahsoka trailer, latest pickups and so much more!
Hasbro teased new images this past week to suggest that the next Haslab is a Vintage Collection Ghost, a vehicle seen in Star Wars Rebels and the upcoming Ahsoka series on Disney+. Glen and Jason discuss what they want to see with this vehicle and what should be included in the tiers. Jason also picked up the Micro Galaxy Squadron version of the Marauder from the Bad Batch. In episode 13, season 4 of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger entered a new dimension in the Star Wars universe - a world between worlds. This is a land with portals that Ezra could view into. Ezra was not only able to see the future and the past from this new place, but he seemingly could make changes to the things that have happened. One common interpretation of this is that Ezra is able to time travel through these portals. On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason talk about this controversial piece of Star Wars lore. Jason doesn't like the idea that time travel has been added to the Star Wars canon, but perhaps that interpretation is incorrect. Dave Filoni, showrunner of Star Wars Rebels, has recently commented on the intent of the world between worlds and how it should be viewed as a Star Wars fan.
In addition to this, Jason returns from a trip to Walt Disney World and shares his experience. Glen and Jason share their spoiler filled thoughts on the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride. They also share their recent pickups and go through the latest Star Wars news!

On episode 121 of the Star Wars: Prototypes and Production podcast, host David Quinn provided an overview to the state of the Star Wars franchise. In it, he talked about the current struggles Hasbro has been experiencing and wondered how it might affect their 2023 bottom line. This, mixed with recent articles about a weakening Magic: The Gathering secondary market and how that could potentially lead to a weak primary market for Hasbro, made the Smugglers wonder how strong the secondary market is for The Vintage Collection and the Black Series.
On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, hosts Glen and Jason welcome David Quinn as they continue the conversation, do their best to decipher the clues, and determine the current state of the modern Star Wars collecting hobby. They use data from late 2021 and combine that with the present day to understand how things are going.

Last week, Glen and Jason wondered if modern collectors are leaving the hobby. After a week of feedback from collectors, it seems like the cost of Star Wars action figures like The Vintage Collection and the Black Series has indeed added stress on the hobby. This week, Glen and Jason, along with their friend Jordan Ghastly, further discuss how costs effects how we collect, debate if Hasbro will ever lower prices, and wonder what the road ahead might look like if nothing changes. They also talk about what they're looking forward to with the upcoming ToyLanta show, what they picked up this week, and a whole lot more.
When talking to modern Star Wars collectors, a new sentiment starts to emerge about the hobby; prices are getting to high and collectors are having difficulty seeing value in the items they buy. A regular release of a The Vintage Collection figure is pushing $17, and a Black Series figure is $25. With the increase in prices, a lot of collectors are slowing down and buying less. On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy podcast, Glen and Jason discuss this (possibly) emerging trend. How much is too much for a TVC or Black Series figure? What makes a figure a good value? Is the number of collectors dwindling from where it was in the mid-2000s? How much life is left in the modern Star Wars action figure market? Glen and Jason discuss these points and more.Additionally, Hasbro held a fan channel Q&A and Glen and Jason walk through the points brought up in these sessions. They also cover the Bad Batch, Willow, and possible movies in the works at Lucasfilm. All this and pick ups of the week! Download and Listen!

On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason are fresh from their local meetup and they share all the fun stuff that went on at this GASWC event. They also talk about how GASWC meetups might be less about the action figures. From there, they talk a little bit more about grading action figures in the hobby. Grading action figures itself is a hot topic. Some people believe it's a good thing, while others believe the process of placing action figures in acrylic is a scam. They go through the pros and cons of grading, weigh the impact of companies buying other companies, the difference between grading companies, and voice concerns about how grading could manipulate prices and impact the hobby. The sequel trilogy introduced us to a new kind of villain never seen before in the Star Wars Universe – the vile Kylo Ren. What makes Kylo different is that, unlike the cold and calculated Emperor, Kylo was fueled by rage and anger, and, at times, he would let his anger make choices for him instead of deciding with a level head. He would display temper tantrums when he didn’t get his way. He would hurt people to prove a point out of a sense of entitlement that he could do so.
On this episode of the Smuggler’s Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason dissect this character to better understand where he is coming from? Might he suffer from a mental disorder? Is all of this fueled by his inability to completely fall to the darkside? Tune in and listen!

In 2019, Hasbro distributed a press release that said the company planned to remove plastic from its packaging by the end of 2022. For some Vintage Collection (TVC) collectors – this is a problem. In a recent poll, nearly 45 percent of the TVC collectors said they keep their action figures on card and in the bubble because the plastic bubble in the packaging harkens back to the original run of Kenner action figures. Nostalgia is part of the appeal. Without plastic in the packaging, that entire aesthetic will be gone. Additionally, Hasbro has made their intentions clear – they wish to recreate every action figure Kenner offered between 1978 and 1985 in TVC. On this episode of the Smuggler’s Galaxy Podcast, Glen and Jason look at all the characters who have not been represented in TVC and wonder if Hasbro will be able to meet their corporate mandate to remove plastic form packaging by 2022, or will TVC be the exception since plastic in the package IS part of the appeal?

On this episode of the Smuggler's Galaxy Podcast, we interview Rich Alot and D. Martin Myatt, two of the authors of the new The Vintage Collection Archive Edition Book. This book, which was Kickstarter in 2019, is now in the process of being shipped to Kickstarters across the globe. Inside its pages are a wealth of knowledge about Hasbro's Vintage Collection (TVC), and the authors graciously gave us some of their time to talk about the process of writing this book. This interview was conducted over multiple nights as we packaged books to be shipped out to Kickstarter backers. Our interview provides some of the behind the scenes strategy when composing copy, why the TVC was chosen as the focus of this project, how things were made, and why there was such a long delay in getting these books out to people. In 1996, Lucasfilm experimented with telling a complete, cohesive storyline across multiple mediums without releasing an actual film. Shadows of the Empire started as a book by Steve Perry, but the story was not limited to the 340 pages contained in the novel. The scope of the story grew through videos games and comics, and our imaginations could do more with the action figures and toys released to coincide with these stories. It’s a common challenge in the collecting community - price gouging. Most of us are tired of empty pegs at the store, and it’s frustrating to find those items at toys shows or Facebook groups for a 100 percent markup. We might not have known it in 1977, but the Star Wars Saga had as much to say about family as it did about the force. The small band of rebels stuck on the Millennium Falcon as it was pulled into the Death Star were as much as a family as our own. And that bond between that band grew as the entire saga expanded. This week on the Smuggler’s Galaxy podcast, Glen and Jason have an organic conversation about Star Wars and how it relates to their family.
