To coincide with Black History Month at HOME, our dedicated programme of theatre, film, art and events, we spoke to three guests taking part to talk about their work, perspective and views on the annual celebration.
Joined by film programmer, critic and curator Liz Chege, writer, performer and spoken word artist Ella Mcleod and musician, actor and activist To!u A¡ayi, one half of To!u x Aden. Megan McGurk, part of the HOME team, hosted the podcast.

Jasmine is from Wuhan, originally… Abandoned as a baby in Hankou train station, she was adopted to a White British family and grew up in England. For Jasmine, Wuhan was just a word on a piece of paper until now. Suddenly, since the outbreak of COVID-19, everyone is talking about the place where she was born and she’s no longer able to ignore her past and those she left behind.
Wait I'm From Wuhan is the story of a Chinese adoptee struggling to decide whether or not to search for her birth family told via a series of Instagram and blog posts. Bombarded with images of masked faces and the deserted streets of Wuhan, Jasmine’s head fills with questions about her Chinese family. Is it too late for her to find them?

They talked about everything from the wildest places they've ever watched theatre to how the cultural landscape in Manchester might change, the turning point in their careers to the advice they would give to young theatremakers.

We spoke to George Heyworth & Liv Morris (of Bourgeois and Maurice), as well as director Philip McMahon and actor Lockie Chapman. We talk about first ever gigs, how Insane Animals differs from ‘traditional’ musicals and what audiences can expect from the show.

“Are you a man? Were you born in Manchester? Do you belong here?”
What appear to be three closed questions, requiring a yes/no answer can in fact be unpacked and answered in surprising and even conflicting ways.
Electronic musician Andrew James Brooks used recordings of answers to these questions to produce Yes Man, a choral work that points a lens on gender identities, home and belonging.
The piece uses digital signal processes to remix and unpick traditional binary notions of gender, psycho-geographical recording techniques to explore and subvert feelings of belonging and choral arrangements constructed from the voices of LGBTQ, refugee, homeless, and the diverse population of Manchester. Yes Man attempts to give voice to those who may not be so visible and uses sound to question the listeners perspective on their own place in the city.

Havana, 1994, and Cuba is drowning in hunger, cigars and rum. With the US-imposed embargo is at its peak, the Cold War comes to an end and the Soviet Union disintegrates. But the life of an elderly couple, Candelaria and Víctor Hugo, continues at a slow pace.
