In the history of Bristol Motor Speedway, one name stands out from all the rest – Darrell Waltrip. The man they called “Jaws” set the standard at Bristol, winning twelve NASCAR Cup Series races in the 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s. But nowhere was Waltrip’s dominance more pronounced than during the early 1980s when he won seven straight races, including four consecutive Food City 500s.
1981 marked a new era for NASCAR, which ordered teams to build smaller cars with a shorter wheelbase and less rear spoiler. The old master Junior Johnson was among the first to figure out how to make the cars handle and his new driver -- Owensboro Kentucky’s Darrell Waltrip – was already on a hot streak winning two of the year’s first four races.
The team rolled into Bristol that March and set a new track record of 112 miles per hour during qualifying. On race day, DW led 334 laps, including the final eighty. Ricky Rudd, Bobby Allison, and Morgan Shepherd chased him to the checkered flag.
The next spring Darrell had his hands full with Dale Earnhardt but he and Junior still led the last 103 laps to earn the win.
1983? Yep, DW did it again. The spring race was run on a May Saturday night but that never phased DW. He qualified thirteenth and needed the first half of the race to get to the front but once he was there, Darrell turned out the lights on the competition.
How dominant was he? Even fans who liked him started wearing “Anybody but Waltrip” T-shirts!
In the spring of 1984, it appeared the win streak would end. Bobby Allison had the fastest car and led the most laps but when he went to the pits with mechanical trouble, it was win number seven for old Number 11. DW scored seven wins in a row en route to Bristol immortality.

Kyle Busch has won three of the last five races at Bristol. He’s averaging 50.8 fastest laps and 68.8 laps led in that span. He has a 100+ driver rating in four of the last six races, and has led at least 70 laps in those four races.
Kyle Larson is one of the best drivers at steep race tracks, and has performed really well at Bristol in the past. He’s averaging the most fantasy points over the last five races here. He’s also average the most laps led and the second most fastest laps in that span. He’s finished in the top ten in four of the last five races here, and is my early week favorite to sneak out a win this weekend.
Matt DiBenedetto started 21st and finished 12th in this race earlier this season, and ended up being the value driver in the optimal lineup. Over the last five races this season, Matt DiBenedetto has an average finish of 12.8, which is the ninth best among all drivers. He’s my value pick to watch, and I like his chances for a top ten finish.

Martin Truex Jr. is averaging the second most fantasy points over the last five races here. He has an average finish of 7.0 in that span, and he’s averaging 119.2 laps led. He has an average finish of 3.7 on the three flat-track races this season
Ty Dillon is a cheap option to consider this weekend. He has a 20.3 average finish in his three career races at this track. His average finish of 16.3 on flat-track races this season is the best in the value range.

Kyle Busch has six top ten finishes in the last seven races here, including a win here last July. He’s led at least 45 laps in five of the last six races here. Kyle has a 116.9 driver rating over the last five races, which is the highest among active drivers here.
Denny Hamlin has a 4.8 average finish over the last five races here, which is the best among active drivers. Hamlin, Keselowski, and Logano are the only three drivers with five straight top ten finishes. Hamlin has a 10.5 average finish on the six large oval tracks this season.
Alex Bowman finished 10th here in 2016 filling in for Dale Jr, and backed that up with another 10th place finish last season. Bowman has a 86 driver rating with a 12.2 average finish on large oval tracks this season. He’s a really nice value option for DFS, and has scored at least 30 fantasy points on all of the intermediate tracks this season.

Kevin Harvick has won two of the last five races here, and has an average finish of 2.8 in that five race span. He’s averaging 75.8 laps led and 50 fastest laps in those five races. He’s also averaging the most fantasy points in that span.
Chase Elliott has an average starting spot of 22.8 with an average finish of 7.6 in the last five races here. The average of +15 place differential, is the most by any active driver in that span. After showing some speed last weekend, I like his upside for Texas.
Ty Dillon is in his third full-time Cup season, and it’s looking to be his best season yet. He’s finished 17th and 13th in the two Spring Races here, and has positive place differential in four of five career races here.

Kyle Busch has seven straight top five finishes at Martinsville including two wins. He’s led over 100-laps in four of the last six races. He’s averaging the most fastest laps and fantasy points over the last five races here.
Denny Hamlin continues to be one of the strongest cars each race on flat-banked tracks. He’s always a serious contender when at Martinsville, and he has five career wins in 26 races here. He won a stage in both races here last season, so if you play on Fantasy Live, he’s a strong pick to win a stage.
Chris Buescher is off to a strong start this season, and he’s been really good for his price in fantasy. He’s finished 23rd or better in four straight races here, and 13th or better in two of those races. As long as Buescher doesn’t qualify to high, he’s a great value pick this weekend.

As the father and son walked back to the parking lot after an amazing experience at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon, April 1, 1979, the nine-year-old first-time NASCAR fan, still trying to process all the action that had unfolded to him in a whirlwind of colorful sights and loud sounds, quizzed his father.
“Did your favorite driver win today?” the son asked his dad, who was proudly covered from head to toe in green and white No. 88 Darrell Waltrip gear.
“Naw, he didn’t. He had a chance, but finished third,” the father said, dejectedly.
“Well, who was the winner of the race?” the youngster shot back, still trying to piece it all together.
“Ahhh, it was some rookie named Earnhardt,” the dad said in frustration.
Little did the pair know – or really anyone who attended the Southeastern 500 that day – that the race was actually the official launching pad for a driver who would become one of the most dominant, revered and greatest champions in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series history.
The rookie winner that day at Bristol, 28-year-old Dale Earnhardt from Kannapolis, N.C., was a second-generation driver who was able to build his own cars, had cut his teeth on Carolina dirt tracks and was following in the tire tracks of his famous racing father Ralph Earnhardt. That maiden victory led to a championship title the very next season and a hall of fame career that produced 76 wins, including a total of nine BMS trophies, and seven Cup Series championships.
Bristol Motor Speedway officials will celebrate that monumental moment in NASCAR history during the upcoming Food City 500 weekend, April 5-7, the 40th anniversary of Earnhardt’s first Cup Series victory.

Martin Truex Jr. has a 126.6 driver rating here over the last three races, which is 19.4 points higher than the second best driver. He won this race in 2018, and has led 198 of 402 laps in the last two races. He’s finished 2nd in two of the last three races this season.
Kyle Larson has finished 2nd or better in three of five career races here. He’s been really good in his career on these 2-mile tracks, and has four top five finishes in the last six races on them. Larson was really fast in Atlanta, and I’m expecting him to show good speed yet again this weekend.
Matt DiBenedetto is the cheap guy I’m liking heading into this weekend’s race. He had a really good run going last weekend, and late race trouble could lower his ownership for this race. I expect this package to pack these cars closer together, and I could see MDB having a good finish this weekend.

Joey Logano has six straight top ten finishes at Las Vegas. With the new 2019 NASCAR package, I’m looking at more than just past stats this weekend. Logano has one of the best pit crews in NASCAR and he’s one of the best at gaining positions on restarts.
Daniel Hemric was very impressive at Atlanta, and while I don’t want to overreact to one good run, he’s still really cheap for fantasy. Hemric has experience running the package with air ducts for the XFINITY series, and any advantage is important going into this race.
