The fledgling Thessalonian Church suffered persecution because of their faith and because they shunned the idols that were pervasive in that city. They became known far and wide for the steadfastness of their faith. Despite having little to no persecution in this country, the reverse seems to be happening to us here. We need to return to the foundation of our faith and not let the bread and circuses of this world dictate to us.
In Matthew 22: 1-14, Jesus tells us the parable of the wedding banquet. This parable shares with us how God has prepared for his creation a beautiful feast, but often times we find that we have rejected the invitation to celebrate with him.
In Matthew 21:33-46 Jesus tells us the "parable of the vineyard". This parable is a steady reminder for us to keep Jesus front and center in our lives and of the church. That our lives are to be all about Jesus, and that our cornerstone is to be Jesus, not the things of this world.
In Matthew 21:23-32 we hear Jesus' authority questioned by the chief priests and elders. In response to their questions, Jesus shares with them a parable about two sons asked to go work in a vineyard. Jesus' parable speaks to us today about how we are going to respond to his message: are we going to listen and actually do what God tells us, or are we simply going to ignore the message and go along our merry way following the ways of the world? There is a dire warning for all of us in Matthew 21:43 for those who choose to ignore the message of the Gospel and go our own way of the world: “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit."
Matthew 20:1-16 In Jesus' parable of the workers in the vineyard we learn from Jesus that we are called to be thankful for whatever God has given to us. So often though in our lives, we live lives of comparison feeling as though we do not get what we feel that we deserve. However, our God is a gracious God and he continually gives us everything that we need, and rather than have our eyes fixed on ourselves and what we do not have, we must have our eyes focused on Jesus.
Peter asks Jesus the question that we all want to ask: how many times do we have to forgive our brother? The answer Jesus gives is a challenge, because he shows us through the parable of the unforgiving servant that just as forgiving as our Father in Heaven forgives all of our sins, we must forgive all the sins of our brother. TEXT: Matthew 18:21-35
Matthew 18:1-14 has three different parts that at first glance do not seem to go together. However, they all have the same theme and that is that God values unity in the body of Christ.
Jesus tells the disciples and us that in order to be his disciples, we need to deny ourselves, pick up our cross and follow him. Loosing our lives for Jesus' sake is hard, but the rewards are out of this world! Romans 12:9-12; Matthew 16:21-28
The Apostle Paul writes for us a constitutional and vision document for the Christian church in the book of Ephesians. He speaks to us about how we have been adopted out of our sinfulness and that God has created us to do good works in His Kingdom. However, we have forgotten that the church is not about "our personal desires" but rather about serving God and His people. Ephesians specifically talks about how our role as followers of Jesus is to "Keep unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace." How are we keeping the unity in our church context?
We tend to do a lot of back talk in our daily life in our relationships with people. In our society today, we seem to think we have the freedom to back talk in any way we possibly can. However, we learn from Job that God is God and that we are not. A life following Jesus is not about knowledge in him, but rather it is about our entire heart defying all human logic and recognizing that He is the one we follow no matter what is happening in our lives. Texts: Job 38:4-18; Romans 10: 5-17; Matthew 14:22-33
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells us the parable of the weeds. This parable is one of many "kingdom" parables that shares with us about our world today. While weeds can take over, we shouldn't sit on our hands but rather we are reminded that God has given us an identity in Him and a privilege to shine like the sun in our worlds. Let God take care of the weeds. Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43
In Romans 8, Paul talks about how we have been given a new life in Jesus Christ. This new life is the spirit of Adoption where we are now called Sons of God. So often, we live as though we are not children of God, but rather we walk around with masks on pretending to be someone that we are not. However, because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we can call our God and Creator: Abba! Father once again!
Jesus speaks to us in Matthew 11:25-30 about rest. So often we go through our lives with so many burdens and struggles that we don't know what to do or how to handle them. We enjoy our vacations and our mini-getaways only to come back to the daily grind. Jesus reminds us that the rest that he gives is EVERY DAY, not just a vacation but the rest He gives means fully relying on him for all of our needs.
Religion is the thing that you do. Church is community and life changing. In Matthew 10, Jesus continues to share with the disciples that life of a follower of Jesus is going to be hard and life changing, and it will mean that we will be carrying burdens to follow Jesus. TEXT: Matthew 10:34-42
There are many things that cause us to be afraid. We become afraid anytime we perceive our sense of security is threatened. This can be a perceived physical, financial, intellectual, relational, or spiritual threat. In these last days, these threats may only appear to be real or they may actually be real. No matter what it may be, our security and our strength lie in our God, who is our refuge and strength. In Him we put our trust. TEXT: Matthew 10:16-31; Jeremiah 20:7-13; Romans 6:12-23
Teaching. Healing. Proclaiming the Good News. Like a compassionate Shepherd longing to gather His scattered sheep, Jesus came to RECONCILE people to His Father. When Jesus sent His disciples as laborers into His harvest field, He guaranteed that his RECONCILING work would continue even after he physically departed the earth. TEXT: Exodus 19:2-8; Romans 5:6-15; Matthew 9:35-10:8
Jesus gave the church a responsibility that we call the Great Commission. Jesus’ Great Commission is to the entire Christian Church. It is also the bedrock for Trinity Lutheran Church’s vision: A united vital force in our community sharing the love of Jesus. TEXT: Matthew 28:16-20.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is one that has been given to everyone in the church. The Holy Spirit is the vital force of the church and moves us into action in our communities. Jesus said: Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them, and that living water is the gift of the Holy Spirit! John 7:37-39; Numbers 11:24-30; Acts 2:1-21
In John 17, Jesus prays for the the church and he prays that we would be united and be ONE as He and the Father are ONE. In our world, being united has its challenges, but with God at the center, we can overcome all those challenges. John 17:1-11; 1 Peter 4:12-19; 5:6-11 with the Holy Spirit we can live out our vision as a church to be a united vital force in our community sharing the love of Jesus.
Wrapping up the Believe series we end on Faithfulness. The Holy Spirit has given us Faith. What does it mean for us to be faithful to God and others in our daily lives? Today is also Confirmation Sunday at Trinity where 5 young men and women confirmed their faith in Jesus Christ! Proverbs 3
The Greek definition of Gentleness: Not being overly impressed by a sense of one’s self-importance. How does this translate into our daily lives? How can you live out the mission of God by living out this Christian virtue?
Jesus the good shepherd is kind and good to us and therefore we can mirror that same kindness and goodness to others.
Through the power of Jesus Christ, we can control ourselves in a world of many temptations
Patience could be one of the most difficult virtues of the Christian life that we struggle with as we deal with the pressure of daily life. However, when we demonstrate patience in our daily walk we become silent witnesses for Jesus Christ everywhere that we go. The reality is that patience comes nothing from this world, but from Jesus. James 5:7-12
Jesus Christ has won for us victory over sin, death and the grave. He as given us a sure anchor in him. That is our identity. We cannot forget our anchor. Hebrews 6:19-20
When a king descends his throne to serve those he rules and to risk his life, it is the best picture of the meaning of humility. This is what our King Jesus does for us. How can we practice that same kind of humility in our daily lives?
How can you live at peace and free from anxiety? Start by shifting your identity. Jesus never shared that our world would be free from trouble, but he did share that when our identity was rooted in Him, his peace would come over us.
The church is amidst an identity crisis. We have forgotten who and whose we are. Because of that, we have lost our joy. We search for identity and joy everywhere. When our identity is rooted in Christ, joy is the result. Philippians 4; & John 15.
In the third part of the Believe series, living the story of the Bible to become more like Jesus we now begin to learn about the virtues of the Christian life. We start with the Virtue of Love. As followers of Jesus, we know that we are supposed to be sharing faith with the world around us. How do we do that when our world and culture is changing so drastically? Jesus' example is fairly simple and straight forward for us. He simply wants us to enjoy the people around us! John 4:27-37 is the text for the message.
In 2 Corinthians 8 Paul talks about excelling in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love but also to excel in this grace of giving. In Week 17 of the Believe Series we learn that God is a gift-giver and He has equipped all his people with spiritual gifts to benefit others and advance His Kingdom by way of expressing love to one another. Eph 4:1-16; Rom 12:3-8; John 14:15-31
Acts 2:42-47 describes for us Biblical Community. The early Christians gathered in fellowship or koinionia and the church multiplied. Is that same Biblical Community possible today?
Our response to God's relentless love for us is to surrender our lives to God’s purpose for us. Looking at Romans 12:1, we see how God defined what the Christian life should look like. Jonah 1:17-2:10; Romans 12:1-2; Luke 9:23-26
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:25-34 tells us not to worry or be anxious about our lives because he provides for all our needs. However, there is one thing that we often overlook in this passage when it comes to our discipleship journey, we fail to seek the kingdom of God. How do we seek God's Kingdom?
