Theology at the Eucharistic Table: Recent Episodes
Mount Angel Seminary
Abbot Jeremy Driscoll, OSB, has been teaching theology at Mount Angel Seminary for over thirty years. From 1994 until 2016 he also taught at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant’Anselmo in Rome. In 2002 he was named as advisor to the Vox Clara Commission for the Congregation for Divine Worship at the Vatican. In 2004 he was named a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology. In 2005 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as Consultor to the Congregation for Divine Worship.A much-beloved professor at Mount Angel, Abbot Jeremy has a gift for guiding his students systematically into the deeper mysteries of the Trinity, especially as they are unfolded and made accessible to man in the Liturgy. His students often refer to his theological lectures as retreat experiences. One pupil affectionately remarked, “Abbot Jeremy could read the side of a cereal box to you and you would feel edified.”After taking Abbot Jeremy’s Introduction to Theology, a few seminarians began to meet with him to further pursue some of the class topics. The conversations that followed were edifying to such a point that the students felt everyone should hear them: Theology at the Eucharistic Table Podcast was born. Loosely following the structure of his book by the same title, Abbot Jeremy and four seminarians discuss God and the Trinitarian life within the context in which it was – and is – primarily made accessible to us: the Eucharistic Table.

On April 12, 2025, Abbot Jeremy Driscoll, OSB, preached this homily on the occasion of the funeral Mass of Abbot Nathan Zodrow, OSB, the tenth abbot of Mount Angel. Abbot Nathan served as abbot from 2001 to 2009. He was first professed as a monk of Mount Angel on September 8, 1974, and was ordained to the priesthood on April 16, 1988. He died on April 8, 2025.

What is the greatest Eucharistic miracle? More than what we commonly know as “Eucharistic miracles,” the greatest miracle is that we are transformed into what the Eucharist signifies: the true presence of God. But how does this come about and where is the place where this transformation occurs? This presentation will examine the key notion of desire – often misunderstood in contemporary society – and its transformation and purification within the liturgy, the place and the means by which we “put on Christ” and become what we were destined to be.

In this lecture from September 14, 2024, Sister Gertrude Feick, OCSO, a Cistercian sister of Redwoods Monastery, spoke about Cardinal Basil Hume and his reflections on the Eucharist. The full title of her talk is “Cardinal Hume on the Eucharist: Did not our hearts burn within us as we listened to him speaking?”
Sister Gertrude earned her Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, writing her thesis on Cardinal Hume. That thesis later became a book called, 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘭 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘦: 𝘈 𝘗𝘪𝘭𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘮’𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘥, published by Gracewing in 2019.

Sponsored by the Mount Angel Institute, artist Tomasz Misztal shares how art and its creation has transformed and affected his life. Focusing on the sacred and incorporating figurative and abstract elements in his pieces that express the human condition and spirit, learn how his artistic approach has transformed and evolved over time.
Misztal was born in Poland and currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He earned his Master of Fine Arts and PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland, and taught as a faculty professor there from 1982 to 1993. He has also taught art privately throughout his career.
Misztal has worked in many international museums and institutions, including Sachseln, Switzerland; Lisbon and the Azores, Portugal; Berlin, Germany; Warsaw, Gdansk, and Warka, Poland; and most notably, the Vatican Collection.
Misztal’s talent has been recognized numerous times, including with a silver medal in the category of Work on Paper at the 2011 International Biennale of Modern Art in Florence, Italy. He has also had several solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad.
Because of his focus on sacred art, Misztal has created artworks for many commissions, for private and public entities, including many churches and monasteries. You can find his Last Supper sculpture in our guesthouse dining room. His piece in the Vatican Collection was commissioned for the Solidarity Movement on behalf of the Gdynia dock workers as a gift for Pope John Paul II in 1987.

In March 2024, Dr. Maryanne Wolf gave a talk at Mount Angel Abbey on "Reading in a Digital Culture: The Beauty and the Challenges to Empathy, Critical Analysis, and Contemplation." Focusing on research in neuroscience and education, Dr. Wolf looked at the effects of digital mediums on the development and the sustaining of deep reading processes, particularly empathy/perspective-taking, inference, and critical thinking — the precursors to the contemplative function and our deepest insights.
Dr. Maryanne Wolf, author of 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 (2018) and 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘥 (2007), is a scholar, a teacher, and an advocate for children and literacy around the world. She currently serves as the Director of the newly created Center of Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. She was made a permanent member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences by Pope Francis in 2020.

In June 2024, Christin McIntyre, MD, PhD, spoke at Mount Angel Abbey on St. Thomas Aquinas’s insights into the human person, created in the image and likeness of God, and how those insights offer hope for true healing amid the mental health crisis in our world today.
Christin McIntyre, MD, PhD has been in outpatient practice as a psychiatrist in the Portland area since 2002. She continues to see patients in Oregon and Washington by telehealth since relocating to Idaho in 2021. Psychotherapy continues to be a main focus of her practice, and to better serve a growing number of Catholic patients in recent years, she has pursued training in Thomistic Psychology as well as with the John Paul II Healing Center. She and her husband are oblates of Mount Angel Abbey, where she offers periodic retreats that draw from her experience in clinical psychiatry, spiritual healing ministry, and the Catholic faith.

Abbot Jeremy is the 12th abbot of Mount Angel Abbey, elected by the community in March of 2016. Abbot Jeremy made his first profession in the community on September 8, 1974, and was ordained a priest in 1981. He holds advanced degrees in theology from the Augustinianum Patristic Institute and the Pontificio Ateneo Sant’Anselmo.
Originally from Ukraine, Bishop Benedict is bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Chicago. He is a former hegumen of Holy Dormition Lavra and holds degrees in medicine, business, and a PhD in theology from Lublin Catholic University. In this lecture from March 9, 2024, Fr. John Paul Le, OSB, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, explores monastic spirituality from the perspective of prayer and how this prayer can enrich the life of a Christian living in the world. The first part of his talk focuses on lectio divina, the ancient monastic practice of prayerfully reading the sacred Scriptures. Throughout the centuries, monks developed this method of reading the Scriptures which can be broken down into four steps: reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation.
The theme of the second part of the lecture is the Liturgy of the Hours (or Divine Office), the prayer of the Church. St. Benedict calls this rhythm of chanting the psalms and other Scriptures the “Work of God.” Through the Liturgy of the Hours, we unite ourselves to Christ in his eternal prayer to the Father.

She focuses on five themes within the Holy Rule: prayer and work (“ora et labora”), obedience, humility, stability, and hospitality.
Dr. Patnode is a Benedictine oblate, wife, mother, grandmother, and director of the Catholic School Leadership Program at Saint Paul Seminary in Minnesota.

In this second lecture from February 10, 2024, Abbot Peter Eberle, OSB, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, explains how monastic community life is structured, its purpose, and how learning about the spirituality of community life can help lay people live out their Christian vocation.
He bases his presentation, in part, on chapter 72 from the Rule of St. Benedict:
“… This, then, is the good zeal which monks must foster with fervent love: They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other (Romans 12:10), supporting with the greatest patience one another’s weaknesses of body or behavior, and earnestly competing in obedience to one another. No one is to pursue what he judges better for himself, but instead, what he judges better for someone else. To their fellow monks, they show the pure love of brothers; to God, loving fear; to their abbot, unfeigned and humble love. Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may he bring us all together to everlasting life.”

This is the first of four lectures on monastic spirituality in the winter/spring 2024 Christian in the World lecture series. In this first lecture from January 27, 2024, Br. Ambrose Stewart, OSB, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, focuses on the Desert Fathers – those 3rd and 4th century monks who first fled to the Egyptian desert in search of God.
The first half of the lecture considers the life of Saint Antony, “the father of all monks,” and the collected Sayings of the Desert Fathers. In the second half, we look at Saint Pachomius, the father of cenobitic (communal) monasticism, along with Saint John Cassian, whose Institutes and Conferences synthesized the wisdom of the Egyptian desert and transmitted it to the Latin West.
The unifying theme in all of this is Scripture. The desire to radically embody Scripture in their lives consumed these early monks. This desire is just as relevant for Christians in the World today as it was for the 4th century desert-dwellers.
