In this episode, I explore the pressure of expectations in the workplace and how to cope with professional stress. We all face stress at work, but unlike stress in other areas of life, professional stress is often based on the expectations of others. It's essential to find healthy and productive ways to channel that stress and lower it in the first place.

I discuss the importance of focusing on your career goals and not getting caught up in office politics or gossip. By setting a good example and leading instead of following, you can cut down on stress, encourage a more positive environment, and even advance in your career. I also share practical tips for managing stress, such as deep breathing, taking breaks, and getting exercise.

I emphasize the importance of moving away from stress and toward peace and joy in your workday. By keeping your thoughts focused on the things that matter to you, you can get more accomplished and feel less stressed. I also discuss the value of taking time for yourself and doing things that you find relaxing to de-stress outside of work.

Ultimately, the key to coping with professional stress is to keep things simple, focus on solutions instead of problems, and respond calmly and effectively. By doing so, you can increase your productivity and feel more in control of your work life.

This episode discusses the advantages and disadvantages of applying for a new position at a company where you already work.

Before the interview, it is recommended that you review your company's hiring history to see how many managers started in entry-level positions. Be selective in choosing the opportunities you pursue and inform your current supervisor of your plans, as their advice may be helpful. Consult with coworkers to gain insight into the job description and responsibilities.

During the interview, it is important to be professional and dress appropriately. Ask plenty of questions to clarify expectations and responsibilities and explain your qualifications and what makes you different from other candidates. Manage your reputation by being candid about past errors and how you learned from them.

After the interview, respond graciously and thank the interviewer and anyone who helped you during the process. Plan for your transition if you are selected for the position.

Applying for internal job openings can provide a smart way to advance your career while still enjoying the benefits of your current workplace. By following these steps, you can position yourself competitively and increase your chances of success.

A workplace survey conducted by CareerBuilder found Seven out the top 10 productivity killers involve too much socializing. Is there anyone that springs immediately to mind - a ’Chatty Kathy’? Maybe it’s the receptionist who describes her new diet each time you pass through the lobby, the manager who dominates weekly staff meetings, or the sales rep who stops by your cubicle for an hour at a time.

Which is absolutely fine if it’s work related for the most part, but if it’s just to shoot the breeze and share a story with you for the umpteenth time – then it’s starting to be a problem. Especially if you just want to scream at them “you’ve told me this story several times before”.

It's important to make smart decisions when faced with a job you hate and avoid the temptation to just quit.  Here is some of what I share in today's show:

  • Try to find one thing you like about the job and focus on the positive aspects to help get through tough times.
  • Understand why you don’t like the job, and see if there is anything that can be changed.

  • Develop any skills that can be gained from the current position, and exercise caution when considering an exit strategy - some short-term pain might be part of making the smartest career decision.
