Stand Up for Yourself – to defend or support a particular idea or a person who is being criticized or attacked

In this episode, I discuss five reasons to stand up for yourself to defend your ideas, rights, & to gain the respect of others, in this podcast episode. Although in the past, I would usually clap-back hard, my methods were not always as constructive as I would like. These were my young and immature days, where I felt everything was mostly “dog-eat-dog”, ready and willingly taking people out verbally (and sometimes physically) just to make a point.

As I matured I learned to stand up for myself in more effective ways, in order to make a difference and to insight change positively. In these 5 great reasons to stand up for yourself, I touch on issues that are far beyond “killing people with kindness”, and learning how not feel regret or guilt after educating people on how you deserve to be dealt with.

Build confidence -
Shed light on injustice & disrespect –
Set an example/ inspire others –
Set a precedent/a bar –
Teach a lesson to the accused –

Show up for yourself! Speak your mind and use your voice. Don’t hide behind the avatars and profiles pictures, but come from behind the screen and keyboard to speak up for a group that is being disadvantaged, not just yourself. It’s bigger than just ourselves when so many of us are experiencing so many defeats and obstacles that in the past we were afraid to change.

The organization caters to women who need an extra push to step their business up to the next level.

We touch about the importance of fulfilling a need in your business in order to be successful. Shantell touches on the different aspects of building an organization that caters to the needs of women of diverse backgrounds, and how helping them helps the overall community. The goal is to transform more women into being leaders in their individual businesses and careers, therefore empowering others to follow their example.

Jill Vanderwood authored a book, “Shaking behind the Microphone: Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking” shares her ten point plan on facing the fear of public speaking and learning to get in front of the microphone. She will deliver the information you need to face your fears and get into public speaking.

Before becoming an expert, Jill was a proud grandmother and mother. Learning to overcome her fears in her fifties, she decided to go to toastmasters to learn how to prepare to conduct her own workshops and train on overcoming her personal fears of speaking in front of people. She credits toastmasters in getting her prepared, as she says the toastmasters programs forced you to “always be on”.

Jill says it’s important to practice public speaking, because you may be faced with personal terror and fear causing you to freeze and forget what you want to say in front of your audience.

Jill credits Toastmasters training for changing her life and keeping her from depending on her notes, which often fell on the floor causing her to lose her page and her place. She has spoken to rehabs, writers, boys and girls clubs, and many other organizations. She says her desire to transform her abilities.

She gave up on music for several years until one day she saw her son making music, and decided to start over in a new studio. With powerful motivation, and a new team of musicians, her 1st album Burn was completed in a few short months and was released 2011, followed by Poison in late 2012, Drown in 2015 and 3 remix albums.

The streets proved to be a greater challenge still and Kent spent the rest of his childhood and young adult life in and out of county lockup until he finally landed a two year prison sentence. From the talent showcase titled Motivate, my previous Flawesome Academy workshop, husband, father, and motivational speaker Joseph Fountain has been an incredibly inspiring man about town in Richmond, Virginia. I had the wonderful pleasure of chatting it up with him before the New Year as he talks about being a motivator for those in the community. It wasn’t until today, I was able to get my hands on the audio file to post this, but I believe it is just as powerful now as it was a few months back.

From his own testimony, he used to work as an engineer. He was laid off before his son was born, and after being rejected by many jobs while trying to get back into the workforce, he felt led by God to use his gifts to work for himself.

Joseph discusses not growing up in the most pristine of environments, describing his upbringing as rough. He was torn as a young man to make money and provide for his family. He talks about learning new avenues in life to provide for himself, his wife and children. He believes that God has better for us all, and that God saved him to go down an enriched path to motivate and help others find better ways to live.

The group started out writing and recording in the basement of Banditville under the label of VaRioTeam, which was the label that they were under at the time. After recording their first album at Banditville with the Young City Bandits in 2001, the group then called Extreme Caution, was forced to break up due to the incarceration of Oh! After a 7 year lapse, Extreme Caution advanced to Da 5yve Footaz adopting a new member. During that 7 year period of not recording as a group, Jus B. Chill continued writing and recording in honor of Oh!, keeping it trill. Da 5yve Footaz are now affiliates of Divine Sonz and its movement. They are now a part of that same movement, Charged Up Ent. Da 5yve Footaz have been a group since July of 2009 and the group consists of Jus B. Chill, Oh! aka U.D.K. and new member Young Yankee. They are all under 6 feet, hence the name. Jus B. Chill and Oh! are the two original members who have been rapping together since they were teenagers. Young Yankee, the youngest member of the group, also produces tracks for the group. Together they have written over 50 songs. They bring a mixture of that VA and New York swagger. With their dedication, enthusiasm, love for music and love for entertaining, this group is sure to be around for a long time. They now share the same dream as Charged Up Ent.

Marcus Campbell was born and raised in the Highland Park, Northside neighborhood in Richmond, Va. He and his younger brother of six years were raised in a single parent home by their mother. But unlike most single parent homes their father was always around and in their lives. Growing up he was involved in a variety of different things from cub scouts to playing little league sports for Hotchkiss Field. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1993 where he was a standout baseball player who made it to play American Legion baseball. After graduating he soon fell into the trap that so many of our young black men fall victim to, by getting in trouble and being incarcerated. While incarcerated in 2002 after reading a Zane novel he decided to write a similar book but from a male from the hood point of view. After being released in 2008 and not being able to find a job because he's a convicted felon and not being able to find a publisher for his book. He decided to do it himself, he wrote, typed, printed, edited and binded the book with no help from anyone. He also wrote a second book titled 'Thoughts of A Young Black Man" while incarcerated and he hopes to have that published by the end of the year. Mr. Campbell loves sports his favorite teams are The Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Lakers, and Atlanta Braves. This year he even began coaching little league baseball for North Richmond. Mr. Campbell currently lives in Richmond has two kids and is engaged to their mother.

Due to my recent decision to rock my natural locks for a while and still maintain DIVA status, I've been getting many questions about my confidence level and how I'm holding up.

First of all, I wasn't in some horrific accident that left me deformed and mangled. I just took the weave out! Damn, is it that bad? Don't answer that because I don't really care.

I wanted to have segment where I asked people about their opinions on their own body image and how they perceive women with different characteristics than themselves. I want to know is all the "accepting my flaws and just being me" a hype or are women really down for the cause, and if so do they apply those same policies towards other women?

J’Lee is of mixed heritage and was raised by a single mother. Growing up was no easy task for J’Lee so she turned to school, basketball, music, singing, and writing poetry as therapeutic outlets. J’Lee has stated that “a song is just a prayer waiting to be spoken and a prayer is just a song waiting to be sung,” having gone through life with this belief in mind, J’Lee maintains that the ability to be creative has kept her grounded throughout the trials and tribulations she faced during childhood and adolescent years. J’Lee graduated from Skidmore College in 2005 with a B.A. in Government/Law & Society and more recently graduated from VCU in Richmond, VA (where she currently resides) with a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work. While she is passionate about helping the likes of all people and animals (more specifically pit-bulls), J’Lee considers herself a “contemporary ghetto fabulous hippy” – a compassionate humanitarian who believes that we need to “be the change we seek in the world.” Despite academic accomplishments, J’Lee feels as if something is still missing, as if she’s losing her creative self and true purpose in the day to day hustle known as life, work and bills – and no longer wants to ignore her passion for music.

In 1993, she packed her bags, AGAIN, and transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University where she FINALLY graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies with a focus in Child Care Administration in 1997. While at VCU, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the spring of 1995. She also gave birth to her first daughter while in school in 1996. After graduation, Ryshonna held several jobs ranging from customer service to assistant director at a franchise child care center. Ryshonna realized the need to have a “fall back” during transitions to new jobs, so in 1999, she went to school to become a Certified Massage Therapist. She completed the program in 2000 and worked in various country clubs and spas as a part-time therapist and has personal clients as well. In 2002, Ryshonna gave birth to her 2nd daughter. Not long after, Ryshonna and her fiancé ran off to Cancun to get married in 2002 and returned with a special souvenir. In 2003, her 3rd and FINAL daughter entered the world! Ryshonna has always had a compassion for working with children and taught 6th grade math at an inner-city school in Richmond for three years before discovering her entrepreneurial spirit. In 2003, she left the school system to co-own and operate a group home for pregnant/parenting teens in the foster care system. Since then, she has owned and operated a child care center and a consultation firm; helping other caring individuals open their own group homes and assisted living facilities. GaptoothDiva gets it in with rap phenom and lyrical professional Joshua Reed aka Freeze, one of Richmond's hottest MC's from Charged Up Ent. In 1992, Joshua’s family moved to Denver, CO, opening his eyes to a world of gritty street life, gangs and “the grind.” The appeal of the streets called and Joshua answered- Freeze was born. After threes years of Colorado life, Freeze moved back to a middle class suburb in Richmond, but the influence of the streets stayed with him. Graduating high school with a 3.2 GPA was matched by his graduation in the criminal underworld; from petty crimes to nickel bags, and eventually large quantities of hard narcotics. A 2002 acceptance to V.A. Tech was quickly put to halt with his first drug arrest. Linking up with fellow Tech dropout and M.C. Renazance, Freeze recorded his first album Freezer Burn. After selling 1000 units, Freeze began working on his next project. Tha Introduction, a mix-tape with many local artists, generated a buzz amongst the underground Tri cities area. With upgrades to his personal recording set up, he continued to record music and perform at area shows, planning to drop his second album A Cold Night late 2006. Along with help from Vellians consulting agency, Freeze achieved wide success with his single “Mistress”, getting added to many radio station rotations and interviewed in two national magazines (The Connex List, Right On). On November 21st, 2006, at the pinnacle of his rapping endeavors, Freeze was indicted on five counts of felony possession and distribution to wit cocaine. Sentenced to 25 years with 23 ½ suspended, he spent his time incarcerated finding himself and his God. February 19th, 2008, Freeze was released with a newfound introspect and outlook on life. Hopping right back into the local music scene, alongside Charged Up Ent., Freeze has solidified himself as a heavy hitter in Richmond, VA. V(associated with Chasin Money Squad Ent.) and her mother, Poet and Writer Wilma Fleming (also known as “Black Pearl”). Vileeta, who has been singing since she was four at Fifth Street Baptist Church, developed a talent for turning her emotional struggles and circumstances into music. Much like her mother, Wilma Fleming, who turned her experiences of love, loss, pain, and learning into poetry, the two illustrate a dynamic support system that could inspire any mother/daughter team. We discuss the difficulties of pursuing your dreams and raising a family, having motherly support and input, and how life experiences and trials and tribulations can result in creative poetry and genuine music. GaptoothDiva chops it up with Lez, Author and Publisher of “A Lesson Learned”, a life-like illustration of a young woman from Richmond, making hard life decisions on quest to support herself and her child. GaptoothDiva picks her brain on the self-publishing process and ask how new writers embark on the process of putting their first book on the market without the need to submit to small and large publishing houses. Lez is a native of New Jersey who currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. Her life experiences and observations of others have provided her with the realization that drama is worth learning from. “A Lesson Learned” is Lez’s self-published debut novel, which is a compilation of her own personal lessons creatively intertwined with those of others that ultimately created a page-turning depiction of life’s harsh realities, complex conclusions, and enough humor to make you laugh. Lez’s inspirations include the works of others such as J. California Cooper and Sista Souljah. She is very compassionate about reaching out to women who may have struggles in their lives that can be turned into positive experiences. As a result of her outreach, she founded a women’s networking and social group named Shades of Mahogany in Richmond, Virginia. This group provides an atmosphere of trust, community service and positive energy. The proud mother of two continues to work on many novels to come.
