In this episode, I explore what attracts narcissists. Despite common belief, narcissists are attracted to everyone - not just empaths. Empaths are often groomed to normalize and accommodate narcissistic people. Therefore, it's not surprising that they often find themselves surrounded by more toxic people. Romance scams are rising through the use of online dating apps and social media. People are being targeted for money, sex, resources, and affiliations by people who they fall in love with but have no idea who they really are. The scammer lives multiple lives and often discards one victim after the other, leaving a trail of destruction. You often find out how much they don't care for you after they are long gone and have ruined your finances. By the time you wake up to the scam, they are already on to the next victim. No one is exempt from this scam, and people who are vulnerable, elderly, successful, and celebrities are often targeted.

In honor of National Pride Month, I explore how toxic homoerotica shows up in heterosexual female friendships. Women who develop a romantic attraction towards their friend, become obsessed with their friend's life. They are jealous of their friend's romantic interest, and other friends. They want to keep their friend all to themselves, and will lash out towards their friend if there is a threat of anyone else becoming the priority. A good movie for reference is Single White Female.

I share some of my general thoughts about Dr. Sherrie Campbell's book. If you are healing from toxic parents (emotionally abusive or narcissistic), I recommend adding this book to your library.

It is a quick read, very user friendly, uses layman terms, and is relatable to anyone who grew up in a toxic or abusive family!

In this podcast, I discuss the difference between no-contact, low-contact, and grey rocking with a narcissist. I take a deep dive into when it's appropriate for you to go no-contact versus low-contact. I also discuss the parameters around grey rocking and why it shouldn't be used long-term unless absolutely necessary. None of these methods should be used to punish the abuser or to get them to contact you more.

In part 2 of the podcast with @ Dr. Virgil Zeilgler-Hill, PhD. we discuss a previous study done on rates of narcissism. He discussed possible higher rates of narcissism in the Black community, and also discussed the limitations of cultural norms on the assessment measure and the study. The implications of the study suggest the need for further studies, diversity in the panel of researchers, and further development of cultural norms on the assessment.

Today’s episode kicks off the first in the Kiss of Death series. I discuss the seriousness of when a partner makes the statement “if I can’t have you, no one can.” Veiled threats are a serious matter and are indicative that you are in possible danger if you are on the receiving end of it. When a person views you as an object that they are not willing to part with unless it’s on their terms, the potential for violence increases drastically. I offer some tips and suggestions if you are in a relationship with someone who delivers this veiled threat to you.

Laura K. Connell, Trauma-Informed Author & Coach, and I sit down to discuss her family trauma, which led to her passion for coaching around the dynamics of the dysfunctional family. She and I explore what roles family members play within the broken family. The broken family may be filled with challenging dynamics including abuse, codependency, addiction, estrangement, or high conflict. The dysfunctional roles are the scapegoat, mascot, hero, lost child, and the enabler; and we often vacillate between these roles. Lastly, Laura and I reflect on the impact that family dysfunction has on a person over time and generations.

D.A.R.V.O (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim Offender), is what frequently happens when you get into an argument with a narcissist. It is gaslighting at its finest. The narcissist will deny a specific event happened, attack your character, and then reverse the situation to make themselves the victim. It encompasses victim-blaming, shaming, denial, and manipulation and is very dangerous to a victim of abuse. Because of D.A.R.V.O., victims can question their own reality and internalize blame.

When we find ourselves in relationships that don't serve our needs or may be abusive, our partners can have attachment wounds. Shena Tubbs, creator of Black Girls Heal joins us today to discuss love addiction, love avoidance, and love deprivation. If you find that you fall in love fast with potential or fantasy, and create stories of living happily ever after before truly knowing a person - you may struggle with love addiction. If you experienced relationship trauma that causes you to fear love and relationships, thrive in independence and freedom, you may struggle with love avoidance. If you struggle with shame, self-rejection, unworthiness, and tend to push people away; then you may struggle with love deprivation.

Dr. Donna Oriowo, PhD, longtime friend of A Date With Darkness and owner of Annod Right and I discussed the Lovers and Friends Podcast episode titled I Baby My Man. This podcast set the internet abuzz as it was controversial. If you have not heard this podcast, be sure to check it out as it is the reference point for this episode. In it, the guest Ms. Jasmin Brown stated that her relationship is one in which she is submissive to her man all the time. Britt Frank, LSCSW, SEP and I sit down today to have a candid discussion about trauma, feeling emotionally stuck, and emotional incest that adult children experience from growing up in a family with parents who don't respect boundaries. Britt Frank, LSCSW, SEP and I discuss why adults who experience emotional incest from their parents may stay stunted in their emotional growth. Independence and learning healthy boundaries can be much more challenging to develop when your parents want to control your life as an adult.

Cameka Alexander, a behavioral counselor and owner of Fasttell non-profit joins us today. She and I have a candid conversation about misogyny and how it show’s up in the relationship dynamics between fathers and their daughters. Ms. Cameka Alexander, a behavior counselor, offers her theory on why fathers “hate” their daughters and how this affects their safety and security throughout their lives. She and I also discuss the impact of how this has affected her personally through her own relationship with her family and her personal values. Lastly, she shares her thoughts about how giving a child what they want instead of teaching values, may cause more trauma and problematic behaviors down the road.

Dr. Fanike-Kiara Young, LCSW joins us today to have a candid conversation about intuition. Your gut feeling about a person or situation is often your first indicator of a red or green flag. Instead of paying attention to how we feel about a person or a situation, we attempt to play things safe or small by giving it the "benefit of the doubt."

In this episode, I provided tips and suggestions to a listener's question about how to co-parent with a narcissistic ex. If you are just tuning in for the first time, I clarify how important it is not to pathologize or diagnose the other parent without being well-informed. Being able to normalize your emotions, decompress, find emotional support, and making efforts to inform your child without putting them in the middle of a volatile situation are recommended tips.
