Here are some verses for this message: Romans 4 Abraham Justified by Faith 4 What then can we say that Abraham, our physical ancestor,[a] has found? 2 If Abraham was justified[b] by works, he has something to brag about—but not before God.[c] 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.[d] 4 Now to the one who works, pay is not considered as a gift, but as something owed. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous,[e] his faith is credited for righteousness. David Celebrating the Same Truth 6 Likewise, David also speaks of the blessing of the man God credits righteousness to apart from works: 7 How joyful are those whose lawless acts are forgiven and whose sins are covered! 8 How joyful is the man the Lord will never charge with sin![f] The Promise Granted through Faith 13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.[i] 14 If those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made empty and the promise is canceled. 15 For the law produces wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression. 16 This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants—not only to those who are of the law[j] but also to those who are of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all 17 in God’s sight. As it is written: I have made you the father of many nations.[k] He believed in God, who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist. 18 He believed, hoping against hope, so that he became the father of many nations[l] according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.[m] 19 He considered[n] his own body to be already dead (since he was about 100 years old) and also considered the deadness of Sarah’s womb, without weakening in the faith. 20 He did not waver in unbelief at God’s promise but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 because he was fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 Therefore, it was credited to him for righteousness.[o] 23 Now it was credited to him was not written for Abraham alone, 24 but also for us. It will be credited to us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered up for[p] our trespasses and raised for[q] our justification.[r] His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature. 2 Peter 1:3–4 If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. In this message Caleb will preach on three 20:21 verses in the Bible John 20:21 (Peace) Exodus 20:21 (Close to God) and 2 Chronicles 20:21 (Victory through worship). Do you have to make a New Year’s Resolution before New Year’s? Well perhaps that is true, but I believe that this is still important to make a goal even if it is January already. In fact, today by the end of this video I want to you have written down three goals. These can be three goals that you want to do this year. For me I believe that it is not too late to start a New Years goal. John Maxwell once said, “A great leader's courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” What are you passionate about? Whenever we see a need for something, we need to see an opportunity. This can be God using us to be His hands and feet. Say this out loud, under your breath, I want a vision from God. When we seek God, we will find Him. When you seek the Lord, He will guide you. You may say, well I’m just not sure what God wants me to do this year. Well just do something until you figure it out. If you don’t know where to work, just work on getting a job or work at a temporary job. Later you can move to a different and better company. Proverbs 29:18 tells us, “18 Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is one who keeps the Law.”Another translation says, “the people perish” without a vision. Make a goal to read the Bible in a year. Whenever I read the Scriptures, I am filled with joy. It is also important to write things down. When we see things written down, we are able to remember them better. Some of the best people that shop at H-E-B are the ones who take a photo of their fridge and pantry. They can zoom in and remember what they need. Having a list will help us keep the vision on our mind. Having a fresh vision is important. I recently order a box of Wheaties to place in the upstairs game room at our church. I figured it would look really cool. I found one with Michael Jordan on it. It was perfect. It was from 1990 and is now 30 years old. When I got it, I noticed it was making some sound when I shook it. Yes it still contained the cereal on the inside. The owner had kept the food in the box. It was never opened. If I were to get a bowl and eat that cereal, It would probably taste horrible. This is a reminder for me that just as we need fresh food, we need fresh vision. This is a Biblical principle as well because this is what happened with the Israelites were given manna. God sent bread from the skies and they would only keep what they needed for the day. In the same way God has grace for us every day. Let us wake up and acknowledge the supply of the Lord. Success does not always happen immediately. It happens through habit and the work of God. When we are with God, we do not have to be afraid. We can enjoy the Lord and how good He is. So begin today to decide that the first week in January will not be the only time that you follow your goal. Take time today to write out three goals. Keep them reasonable, avoid general goals, and make them specific. If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. We are a grace-based non-denominational church. When starting the New Year, some choose to read the Bible as their New Years resolution. Yet some books can be hard to understand. When we read through the Bible we will come across things are relevant for our lives today even if we do not realize it. Leviticus is a difficult Book to read. It doesn’t have any heroic stories like David, Esther, or Daniel. It lists many laws for the Israelites under the law. One amazing part of the book of Leviticus is what is called the year of Jubilee.

When is the year of Jubilee? It happens in the fiftieth year. Numbers are important to God. Five is the number of grace. God created the Earth, and then on the Seventh day He rests. God institutes a law for everyone to rest on the seventh day. They take seven times seven, this equals 49, then on the fiftieth year they rest. This year is a year of three things rest, restoration, and freedom. This was a time where the land would rest. Land would be restored to the owner. All debts were forgive and all labor was to stop for one year. Slaves could rejoice because they would be set free. This is all an image of our Savior.

Jesus is our Jubilee. He is the one who sets the captives free and gives life to the world. Today as Christians we can be thankful that our sin debt has been paid. We are forever forgiven. This was also a time of celebration. In Leviticus 25:9 says, “You shall then sound a ram’s horn abroad on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall sound a horn all through your land.”

This word for, “rams horn” in the Hebrew is the word, “teruw`ah” which is, “of the Jubile”. The rams horn is a picture of Jesus. Typically to get a ram’s horn, the animal must have died. In the same way, Jesus is the ram that died for us. Because of His death, the death of the ram, we are able to hear the sound of the Shofar.

When this trumpet plays I am believing that this year will be a year where we are refilled and refueled. Hear the Shofar in the air and praise the Lord for our rest, restoration, and freedom. May we all pray to have a year of Jubilee. When we are placing our trust in God we will have a happy New Year!

Recorded on Sunday Oct, 4th, 2020

There are three major ways to understand a passage in the Bible. I’m sure we could list more, but for this sermon, we will just look at just three. In scripture there is a story and there’s a meaning behind the story. Always allow the Holy Spirit to guide your study and teaching. The first way to teach a story is to find one primary overall meaning of the text. This is when you read a passage and do exegesis. This is when you ask the question, “What was the author’s intended meaning?” For example, Jay Smith wrote a summary on BibleHub.com on the book of Jonah. He stated, “The purpose of this book is to show that God is a merciful and gracious God. Although the wicked city of Nineveh deserved to be crushed immediately, God was patient towards them.” When we do exegesis, this can really get us out of our bubble and help us see the perspective of the one who wrote it. The second way to teach a passage is called application. This is when we apply the story to our lives. For some teachers this can be difficult and for others it can be easy. If we are studying the story of Jonah, we could point out that Jonah teaches us that even when we run away from God’s plan, He still has a purpose for us. In the story of David, we can see how God can give us the ability to defeat our giants when we trust in Him. The Final way to teach a passage is the Christ-Center hermeneutic. This is my favorite. This is about seeing Christ through each story in the Bible. Jesus once said, “for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew‬ ‭12:40‬). We can also see this on the road to Emmaus. ‬‬After Jesus’ death two disciples were found walking on the road to Emmaus with sadness. Jesus appeared to them and showed them typologies of Himself in the Old Testament. They began sad, and as they heard the story of Jesus, they were filled with peace. They ended their journey with joy running to tell others about what Christ had done.‬ When we preach with these three methods, we will achieve a one-two hit, with an uppercut to finish the enemy’s plans. There are layers of meaning to each story. So, remember not to diminish any of these. It could be easy to neglect one of these three, but I believe having a exegesis, application, and a Christ-centered approach to the Bible will make our Bible Study powerful. If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. We are a grace-based non-denominational church. In this message Pastor Caleb is going to talk about Proverbs 18. Let us know your favorite verse in this chapter. You can read it below. Proverbs 18 (NASB) Contrast the Upright and the Wicked 18 He who separates himself seeks his own desire, He [a]quarrels against all sound wisdom. 2 A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own [b]mind. 3 When a wicked man comes, contempt also comes, And with dishonor comes scorn. 4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; [c]The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. 5 To show partiality to the wicked is not good, Nor to thrust aside the righteous in judgment. 6 A fool’s lips [d]bring strife, And his mouth calls for blows. 7 A fool’s mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul. 8 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the [e]innermost parts of the body. 9 He also who is slack in his work Is brother to him who destroys. 10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is [f]safe. 11 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own imagination. 12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, But humility goes before honor. 13 He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him. 14 The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, But as for a broken spirit who can bear it? 15 The [g]mind of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. 16 A man’s gift makes room for him And brings him before great men. 17 The first [h]to plead his case seems right, Until [i]another comes and examines him. 18 The cast lot puts an end to strife And [j]decides between the mighty ones. 19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a citadel. 20 With the [k]fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach will be satisfied; He will be satisfied with the product of his lips. 21 Death and life are in the [l]power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. 22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing And obtains favor from the Lord. 23 The poor man utters supplications, But the rich man answers roughly. 24 A man of too many friends comes to [m]ruin, But there is a [n]friend who sticks closer than a brother. Romans 10:5–6 tells us, "For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, 'The man who does those things shall live by them.' But the righteousness of faith speaks." Proverbs 10 is a contrast between the righteous and the wicked. When we follow the Lord, He is going to give us wisdom. This is something we seek after. I hope you make this your prayer request. When you get saved, you pray and speak out what you believe in your heart. What we say is very important because it effects our lives. Begin to read Proverbs for 31 days. Each day take a Proverb and meditate on it. It is not just a good idea or a meaningful phrase, Proverbs is God's Word. Take time to read it out with your voice. Start confessing what God wants you to confess. If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. We are a grace-based non-denominational church. In this message Caleb will talk about how Jesus has redeemed us by being a perfect sacrifice on the cross. God, the strong leader, will lift you up out of sin as you submit to his voice of authority. We will take time to see how Christ is the Greatest Of All Time.

Out of all the holy days under the old covenant, Yom Kippur is one of the most important days. What is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement? It begins at 6 PM. It is taken place on the 10th day of the seventh month of the Jewish Calendar. Aaron takes a bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering. It was a 24-hour period of prayer and fasting. It is also called Yom Kippur. Yom in Hebrew means day. Kippur means to cover. Yom Kippur means to the day to cover your sins. Out of all the feast this one is the holiest The Jews celebrate it now as a time of Fasting and Praying. They do not have a temple; they do not sacrifice animals. This is because their temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. this was their Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

Fasting has an important place in our life today. Remember Fasting reminds us that our belly is not our God. We should not let people that we are fasting. The only time you know someone is fasting should be if you are a close friend or family member. Other than that, the only time people should know is if it is with a corporate fast. One thing you can do is fast a meal to save money and donate that money to a Church or charity that you love. Take the money you would have spent on a meal and give it away.

During this day, there are two goats. One is sacrificed in the temple by the High Priest and the other is used as a scapegoat for people to see. No one can see what takes place with the first goat, but the second goat is used as visual illustration for the people.

In Leviticus‬ ‭16:21‬ ‭we read what God told Aaron to do on this Day of Atonement. We read, “Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness b the hand of a suitable man.” When people see this goat leaving, they are seeing their sin leave. The goat carries their sins, so they can walk in freedom.

Today we can walk free because Jesus became sin on the cross. When we think of the empty tomb, we can see a reminder that our sin is gone. Remember what Psalm 103:12 tells us, “As far as the east is from the west, so far had he removed our transgressions from us.” Jesus became the scapegoat 2,000 years ago. He was sent outside of the city to a place called Golgotha. He died so that we might live. After the Cross, “He entered the most holy place once for all, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.” (See Hebrews 9:11-18) (HCSB). Our redemption does last for a moment or a short period of time, our redemption is Eternal.‬‬

In plain terms, Wisdom is the ability to make godly choices in life. Wisdom Literature is filled with God-given principles. In this message Pastor Caleb will talk about wisdom and what it is. “To know wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding, To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity;” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭1:2-3‬ ‭NASB‬‬ “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭1:3-8‬ ‭NASB‬‬ If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. In this short message Pastor Caleb talks about three stories of the old testament. Technology has sure advanced. When we think about the old west, we may think of Jesse James, Dodge City, ranchers, boots, and duals. Yet one thing we may not consider is the fact that they didn’t have the comfort that we have today. Their houses had no indoor bathrooms, running water, or a/c units. They longed for what we have today. In a similar way, the people of the old testament, desired what we have right now in the new covenant. Pastor Andrew Farley once said, “We have a better deal than any Old Testament believer.”  Psalm 51 is what David prayed to God after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin. In a way, Psalm 51 is us listening into the room of David as he is sorrowful and prays to God. David cried out, “10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10). David’s cry is our truth. God once spoke through Ezekiel saying, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26). God has changed our hearts today. You have a new heart. He can restore my desires and point them in the proper direction. The railroad was a great option for the people of the west. It was a way to get information, people, and items to another location. It was, in a way, a mediator between two towns. A man named Job was once going through the roughest part of his life and said, “For He is not a man, as I am, That I may answer Him, And that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay his hand on us both.” (Job‬ ‭9:32-33). What Job wanted to happen took place, God became a man. Hebrews explains how Jesus is our High Priest and can understand what we deal with on a daily basis because He lived on this Earth as we do. Paul told Timothy, “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” (I Timothy‬ ‭2:5-6‬). ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬Jesus is our mediator today!‬‬ One day a young man ran to Moses and told him that two elders of Israel were prophesying in the camp. He wanted Moses to forbid them. Moses replied saying, “Oh, that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:27-29). This was only a sigh, a wish, a desire. Today we can have a heart full of faith knowing that because we believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is with us. He doesn’t wait until the third or fourth song at church. No as soon as you walk through the doors of your church, He is there. He will be with you always! When I think about the old west, I’m thankful for the technology that we have today.  Likewise, when I think about the new covenant, I’m thankful for what we have. The moment we get saved; God performs a heart transplant. He gives us a new heart and new desires. He is our mediator and gives us the Holy Spirit. David’s dream, Job’s desire, and Moses’ sigh is our reality.    Thank you so much for listening to this sermon! If you are ever in Bay City, TX, make sure to check out High Five Church. 2 Peter 1:12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you

To rewind a tape is to go back and remember what happened. Our goal in this series is to rewind the tape of the Bible and find what we have missed.

One day, God took the Prophet Ezekiel to a valley of dry bones. He walked with him back and forth. Then He asked Ezekiel, “Son of man, can these bones live?” He replied saying, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know” (Ezekiel 27:3). The Lord told Ezekiel, “Prophecy to these bones”. These bones were so dry vultures probably weren’t even looking at them twice. When we go through a valley, we can either give up or start speaking. This is what the Prophet Ezekiel began to do. As he began to speak, he began to hear a sound, these dry bones began to become connected. God then told him to Prophecy again and speak breath into them. They received life and these dry bones stood up and they became a vast army!

This vision was given to show Ezekiel how the people of Israel were at this time. They were in a way, lifeless. They needed someone to prophecy life into them. In a similar way, we are called to encourage those around us. We can either copy and paste our surroundings, or we can write a new story.

Simply because you are going through a storm does not mean it God who sent the storm. Philip Yancey talks about this when he says, “Sometimes we confuse life with God.” Not everything that happens to us is directly God’s will.

Maybe you are in a valley and asking God, “Why is this happening in my life?” I believe there are many reasons we are going through something bad. Here are three reasons we are in a valley. The first reason is because of our choices. Psalms 23 tells us how God was leading him by still waters, guiding him by green pastures, but then David says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…” (Psalms 23:4). Notice how he begins by being led and then he starts walking his own path. The next reason is because of someone else’s decision. Israel was in bondage because of their mistake and another nation had taken them into captivity. The third main reason is because God needs us to reach someone. God sent Ezekiel, not to stay in the valley, but to save people out of the valley. We need to be like this great prophet and speak life to people around us. Sometimes God wants us to be the shepherd, leave the 99 and find the lost sheep.

Sometimes we allow the valley to define us. Don’t make the valley, your home. Don’t let your current situation become your permanent destination. Andy Stanley once said, “If you are where God wants you, Fulfilling the responsibilities He has given you, you are successful!”

When Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary climbed to the top of Everest at 11:30am they were only on the top of that mountain for 15 minutes. That is a small time to be at the top. Had these men not shared their experience, others would not have known how to climb this mountain. You see, Jesus went down the mountain of Heaven to bring us up.Through His sacrifice, we can leave our valley and go meet God at the mountaintop! Maybe you are in a valley but I am believing that God is going to bring life to your situation.

After a mighty victory Samuel did something special. 1 Samuel 7:12 tells us,  “Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”” He took this stone out into the battlefield and set it as a reminder of their victory. Today we have victory in Jesus because He is our cornerstone.

This message is about two men who went through adversity. Jonah and Peter both were held in chains. One had physical chains and the other had emotional and mental chains. One was set free while another needed the love of God.

This past weekend, our church teamed up with Discover Life Church and churches around us to help put on an event called LIT Fest. The word LIT is an acronym which means Leaders In Training and it is a free three day event for Junior High and High School students. During this event we get to be a part of a team where we play volleyball, basketball, obstacle courses, water balloon fights, and stuff like that. When my team went to play volleyball, we had lost the first match. I really wanted to win the second match. We we were neck and neck and finally won the match, I was so excited and happy to win just one game. I was celebrating, jumping, and high fiving! Yet that was really a small victory compared to most things. How important is a volleyball match in the grand scheme of life? Not to much, but if we can get excited about the small victories, how much more should we celebrate what Jesus accomplished on the cross?

In the Bible Jonah preached one of the shortest sermons ever recorded in the Bible. In the Hebrew language it is five words. He told them that if they did not repent, they would be destroyed for their horrific sins. The city had a change of heart. They realized that maybe, “Who knows” God might have mercy (Jonah 3:9). God gave Jonah a second chance at his call, and God was now giving the city a second chance. As God saw this once ugly city turn from their wicked ways, God has mercy on them, and concerning the destruction of Nineveh, “He did not do it” (Jonah 3:10).

What was Jonah’s response? Was he happy or joyful? No, it greatly displeased him and he became angry. He knew this would happen. This was why he never wanted to go and it took a great fish to send him here. He told the Lord, “Isn't this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. Iknewthat youare agracious and compassionateGod, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” (Jonah 4:1-2).Jonah knew the heart of God.

Jonah went out of the city and simply sat down. He made a shelter and sat to discover what would happen. God used a plant to explain His love for Nineveh. As Jonah was in the hot sun, a plant grew quickly to give Jonah shade. Jonah loved the plant. Later a worm ate plant and cause it to wither. Jonah began to burn under the heat of the sun. Here Jonah loved and cared for something that was small and really insignificant, God was in a way saying, “if you care for this small plant, how much more should we care for others?” God can use simple things to show us truth. God is not defined by wrath; He is defined as a gracious and compassionate God. We can be happy for a simple volleyball game or a small plant, so let’s celebrate the victory of Jesus even more!

No we didn't spell that title wrong, in this message Pastor Caleb will be talking about many of the great Psalms during this Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday celebrates the triumphant arrival of Jesus and it is a reminder of the victory of Jericho which was called, "the city of palms". This message highlights the importance of knowing that our victory over sin is found in Jesus.

God wants to be your friend. In all our conversations with God we should always have reverence. Our relationship with God has multiple layers. He is our Lord, Savior, Redeemer, and Father. He is whatever you need Him to be. Some days I need wisdom and He is my king. Other days I need forgiveness and He is my savior. And for some days I need someone to lean on and He is my friend. Rick Hawkins once said, “Happiness is living with Passion.” - Rick Warren once Said that before he gets out of bed in the morning, he will just sit there for a split second and say, “God if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to love you more and know you better.” Time and trust is the difference between an acquaintance and a friend. Psalm 8:4-8 New King James Version (NKJV) 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit[a] him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than [b]the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. In this Star Wars themed sermon Pastor Caleb talks about the importance of meditating on God's word. This message is about the word of God and how it is alive. It gives us the ability to stand our ground and defend ourselves from the enemy.

Meditation is like rumination. After you read the Word of God, bring it up and chew on it again and again.

Sharpen Your Sword There was once a strong man who got a job from a timber merchant to chop down trees. The boss showed him the axe and the area where in the forest where he was to work. The first day, the wood-cutter cut down eighteen trees. He did a great job. The wood-cutter tried even harder the next day, but he only cut down fifteen trees. The third day he tried even harder but only cut down ten trees. He worked harder, skipping lunch breaks. He thought to himself, “I must be losing my strength.” When his boss came out to fire the man he had one look at his axe and said, “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” “Sharpen my axe?” the wood-cutter replied. “I’ve been too busy trying to cut down enough trees .” What happened? He never sharpened his axe. My friend sometimes we need to take a break and sharpen our axe. As we apply this to the Bible we can see that this happens a lot of believers. They have read the story of Jonah, they know who Joseph was, and have studied about the life Paul. The reality is that there is always room for growth.

When we sit down and wake up with the Bible, we can learn more things than we did the day before. It’s easy to quickly read through a passage of Scripture, but it is critical to study each word to find the correct meaning.

In whatever job you do, there is always room for growth. There is something beautiful about excellence. When we take the right time to sharpen our axe, we will begin to see our work improve. It’s not about sweating and working long hours, it is about using the time we have effectively. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Take time today to sharpen your axe. Take a Scripture and meditate on it. There are more parts of the story and more parts to each book of the Bible that we have not found. Yes, you may have read that Scripture before but there is still much more to learn.

Who was Paul? He was by birth a Jew. By conviction a Pharisee. By citizenship a Roman. By education a Greek. And by grace a Christian. We can first begin learning about Paul originally when his name was Saul. He was a pious Jew and followed the law devotedly. Saul did not believe in Christ and persecuted those who did. While Saul was traveling towards Damascus a great light flashed around him. The Scriptures tell us, “4 and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, 6 but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.” 7 The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the [c]voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he [d]could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.” (Acts 9:4-8). For three days he could not see. God then sent Ananias to go visit Saul. Ananias was a bit skeptical at first. Saul had just recently approved for the killing of Stephen, one of the first deacons in the early church. When Ananias went to see Saul, he laid his hands on him and said, “’Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit’ 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized.” (Acts 9:17-18). The name of Ananias in Hebrew means, “grace.” A person’s eyes will only be open when they have an encounter with grace. What are you seeing today? We all have failed and need a savior, but our sin does not stop us from being able to used by God. Your past is your past, but if you continue to look back at all of the negative, you will never see your future. Saul was able to use his Roman name, “Paul” to reach the Gentiles with the gospel. Many people had duel names during these times. According to GotQuestion.org, “Using his Roman name was fitting for the man who proclaimed that he would become “all things to all people,” a Jew to the Jews in order to win the Jews, weak to the weak in order to win the weak, etc., all for the sake of the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:19–23). It is truly the grace of God that can take a man like Saul and turn him into one of the most influential Christians to ever live. Without his life and work for Christ, much of the new testament would not be in the Bible. I think the words of Paul are enough to answer the question, “…But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,” (Romans 5:20). God gave much grace to Paul. God is giving you much grace to you as well!

For everyone there is going to be a last meal, a last breath, and a last statement. When you look at someone last words, you can see an insight into their life. The movie, “The Greatest Showman” is a story about the life of P.T. Barnum who was the founded of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. The final words of P.T. Barnum were, “What were today’s receipts?” Baseball player “Moe” Berg’s last words: “How did the Mets do today?” Everyone will give their last words. What will yours be?

When we think of the life of Jesus we can find seven final words that Jesus spoke out. Each of these sentences carry deep meaning because they give us a glimpse into the heart of God. Jesus only did and said what He saw His father do and say.

It is not easy to talk when you are dying. To be crucified on a cross was by far one of the cruelest ways to die. Death by a cross was not just a crucifixion but a death by suffocation. To speed up the process of death many of the soldiers would break the legs so that they could not pick themselves up to breathe. This is why Jesus having no bones broken is amazing. Each breath was painful and each word spoken took effort.

When Jesus was headed towards the cross He was mocked by so many people. Even both of the men he was crucified with mocked Him. Mathew 27:44 tells us, “44The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.” In life we cannot control many of the situations we go through. Bad things may happen out of our control and we go through a trial. Yet we can always control how we respond. I love Jesus’ response to the mockery. The Scriptures tell us,“34But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing...” (Luke 23:34).

Jesus had people there at the cross that loved Him. His mother Mary was there with His disciple John and two other women. His first words on the cross were not towards his family or friends, they were for His enemies.

The cross is all about forgiveness. That is why He first mentions these words. Our Savior recognized that a lack of knowledge was part of their problem. Paul explained this very well when he said, “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14). The teaching of the Gospel is of such importance because it lifts the veil from our eyes.

Forgiveness has a heavy impact. Remember how both thieves were mocking Jesus? Well guess what happens to one of them. He changes his mind about Jesus. After Jesus spoke out, “"Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing...” the thieve went from mocking Jesus to defending Him (Luke 23:34). The man told Jesus, “…remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" 43And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." (Luke 23:42-43). This man went from mocking Jesus to defending Him. He told the other criminal, “do you not even fear God...this man has done nothing wrong” (Luke 23:40-41). It is the love of God that can change a person’s life! Forgiveness has a way of taking someone and turning them around. Jesus died for both of them that day, but only one received it. God has a desire to help you right now, give your life to Him. It’s time to live the abundant life!

Romans 8:1 tells us, "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." These words, “no condemnation” explain to us that we are free in Christ. Notice the present tense in the word, “now.” This verse is telling us that, “There is now no condemnation” it is speaking of a very present place we are in. This no condemnation is not just for the future, but it is for the here and now. This is not just no condemnation for when we get to heaven, it is no condemnation at this hour.

What does it mean to be in Christ? To be in Christ means that we receive His sacrifice as payment for our sin. Once you believe in Jesus, you are placed in Christ. Many people may think that this, “no condemnation” is only for those who obey God. But that makes no sense. It is because we have fallen, that we need this grace. We do not earn our place in Christ, it is a gift.

When a building is condemned, it is unfit for use. When people are under condemnation, they literally feel unfit for use. They feel hopeless and unworthy. My friend, God declares you fit for use! This is the whole message of the gospel. He has declares that you are a, “…new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Cor. 5:17) (ESV).

Many people try to get rid of a problem by focusing on the fruit. The truth is that we have to take care of the root. If the root is bad so will the fruit. One of the root causes is condemnation. Somewhere we are still bringing up the past about a sin. When you have a small pebble in your shoe, it effects your walk. This is what it is like to walk around in condemnation. You may still feel guilty about your past.

My friend it is time to receive the no condemnation and be free. We are not under punishment because Christ was punished for us. You are in Christ! God no longer condemns you, so do not condemn yourself.

There was so much more I would have liked to share during this message, but alas time went by too fast. I pray that you enjoy this message. We have been so blessed at High Five Church during this first year! If you have ever donated or given to this Ministry we want to say thank you!

Money is a touchy subject. In fact, some 35 percent of people who responded to a Harris Poll sponsored by SunTrust Bank blame the stress in their relationship on financial issues. It can also be a controversial subject in the church. To tithe or not to tithe, that is the question. Whether we are against tithing or for it, we must all realize that God looks at the heart. We should never be pressured, mislead, or manipulated into giving. It should always arrive from a place of love. True grace causes giving. If you want to get someone to give, show them grace. In the Bible, the rich young ruler was given the law and was left sad. When we look at a rich ruler named Zacchaeus, he was given grace and gave joyfully. Why? Because love gives. Jesus once said, 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His [a]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) (NASB). Notice that God’s love for us was the purpose for His ultimate sacrifice. His most prized possession, Jesus, was given to us so that we might be saved. You will give to what you love. If someone does not believe in the vision of a church, they will not give towards it. Yet when someone has been impacted in their hearts and has the love of God, they will give. The Internet is immoral; it is neither bad nor good. Yet there are things on the internet that are not good. There is not a problem with technology, there is a problem with the heart. In the same way, money is immoral. It is neither bad nor good. What we do with our money can be something bad or something good. The Scriptures tell us, “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Timothy 6:10). Oddly enough some get the idea that money is the root of all evil. This verse does not say that. This explains that the love of money is the root of all evil. You can be flat broke but still love money. The context of this verse is telling us that wealth is not the end goal. Our pursuit should be, “…righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11). Yes we should make a living and provide for our families, but the end goal is not to gain, it is to give. We can take nothing into Heaven, but we can take another person with us. Let us keep our eyes on the things eternal and use our resources to reach people for Jesus. God has no problem with us having money, but He wants us to remember that we are blessed to be a blessing. God loves it when we give because that is who He is. God is a giver. We don’t give to be blessed, we give because God has already blessed us. The very fact that we have income and resources is because of God. That is why every time we eat, we pray and thank God for what He has given to us.

One of the top questions ever asked is, “What is the purpose of my life?” When people feel unsuccessful in their life, they can feel hopeless and depressed. The truth is that Christ has a plan for your life. Many people want a single purpose for their life. The reality is that there are multiple reasons you have meaning today. Now this is a broad question, and there is no one single answer for it. Every believer has a general and personal purpose for our life. Our personal purpose deals with the gifts and passions God has given to us. Our general purpose is to believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and preach the gospel. Around 1647 a group of Christians wrote a summary of beliefs about their faith. These were called the Westminster Catechisms. One of these writings says, “What is chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” I believe that this still rings true today. So what do you have passion about? This is one way to find your personal purpose for your life. You can glorify God with your gifts and talents. I once heard someone say that, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” I don’t necessarily believe that statement, so I’m here to bring a new perspective. Throughout the Bible God called the unqualified, the qualified, and anyone who would listen to His voice. He calls everyone! He calls you. The Bible tells us that God, “…desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:4). God’s plan for your life is for you to be saved. He doesn’t call a select few, He desires that, “all men” be saved. He is the answer. Remember there is not just one purpose for your life. We exist to believe in Jesus, use our passions for His glory, and to share this wonderful message of grace. You can have everything, yet still have a void on the inside. Allow God to come into your life and fill the emptiness. Live life, glorify God, and enjoy Him forever.

The Holy Spirit is one of the gifts that God had given to us. So what is the role of the Holy Spirit? What is the purpose of God giving us the Spirit?  There is only one God, and He exists in three persons. There is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Many of us know that Jesus loves us, but once in a while I encourage you to remind yourself that the Holy Spirit loves you. Romans 15:30 tells us, “30 Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me,” We may have a previous idea about what the Holy Spirit is like through people, but many times that is their reactions and it doesn’t always give us a clear picture. Sometimes people may cry, get exited, fall out, or even laugh. Remember that the Holy Spirit is as sane, gentle, kind, humble, and loving as Christ was while He walked physically on this Earth. The Amplified Bible’s translation of John 14:26; it says, “But the [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.” What is the role of the Holy Spirit? It is to, “teach you all things.” This is one of the many roles He has. Allow the Spirit to be your counselor. Whenever you don’t know what to do allow God to guide you to the correct answer. If after that you still are not sure, maybe He wants you to use the wisdom you already have. When Adam was in the Garden with God and naming the animals, God gave him a wife. Jesus told His disciples, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him. 8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (John 14: 7-9). What is God like? He is like Jesus. The works that Christ did were the works of God. What is the Holy Spirit like? Look to Jesus! Christ was always loving and healing. The Holy Spirit is here with us today. What an amazing blessing we have! Take time to enjoy the ever-present gift of the Holy Spirit.

We will continue our sermon series on the life of David. So many times throughout the old testament we can see shadows of Christ. When we look at the ark of the covenant we can see the details and learn more about God. Israel had gotten the ark lost in battle. The ark was out of Israel’s possession for a long time. Yet it was David who eventually brings the ark back to where it was called to be.

When we look at the details of the ark we can see that it was this golden chest which held three items inside. Those three items are the pot of manna which represents mans rejection of God’s supply, Aaron’s rod that budded which represents mans rebellion against God’s appointed leadership, and the second pair of the Ten Commandments which represents mans rejection of God’s law. God told them to then cover these items with the mercy seat.

This mercy seat was one solid slab of gold representing God’s complete righteousness. This has two angels with wings called cherubim one each side facing the center of the mercy seat. God had their eyes pointed down to where the high priest would place the blood of an animal once a year during the Day of Atonement.

The eyes of the cherubim are looking not at man’s rebellion, but they are looking at the blood. As believing in Christ, God is no longer looking to you sin, instead He sees the blood. Because of the Cross God has cleansed our sins through the blood of Christ. Stop focusing on your faults and failures, keep your eyes on the finished work of Christ. Be like the two cherubim angels which eyes are constantly on the blood. When we fail, we are to remind ourselves of the cross. The blood of Christ is greater than all of our rebellion and sins.

What does it mean to be a man after God’s own heart? It means that we desire what God desires. What does He want? He wants us to choose life. When your vision is in the same direction as God’s vision, great things are in store. When we align our will with God’s, lives will be changed, relationships will change, and we will live the abundant life. God. John 10:10 tells us, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

As I really think about David and how God called him a man after God’s own heart. It really makes since. How can I be a man after God’s own heart? Seek after God’s own heart and desires. God said, “ he will do everything I want him to do” (Acts 13:22).

There are many reason why he is called this. I believe that one of the reasons was because he was a worshiper. He also loved God's Word.

"Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.” (Psalms 119:11).

Proverbs 4:20 tells us, “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your sight; Keep them in the midst of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them And health to all [g]their body.” I love that last phrase, “health to all their body.” God’s word is health for our body. There is something energizing about reading God’s word. When we incline our ear to hear God, we will be uplifted. When you are down, he will bring you up. As as give attention to God, it will be life for us.

Besides Jesus, there is more written about David than any other character in the Bible. The runner up is Abraham with 14 chapters, then Joseph who also has 14 chapters, Elijah has 10 chapters, but David has 66 chapters dedicated to him! This is a guy whom God wanted us to know about.

1 Corinthians 10:6-11 tells us, “6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did…11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us…” You can either live by the life of hard knocks or we can learn from things from other people. David is a character in the Bible which we can learn from. We can look at his life as an example of what to do and what not to do. This may be a silly illustration to some but I can always remember my Pawpaw would always adjust the thermostat. Because of this, we would always subtly joke around with him. If you walked in doing a slight shiver and say, “Man it’s freezing!” He would reply, “It is cold in here (throwing on a blanket), change that thermostat!” Then there were times when Pawpaw would be completely happy, watching Gunsmoke, and have a blanket on him. But if you would make a comment like, “Man it’s hot in here.” He would throw that blanket off and say, “Yeah it is warm! Turn down that temperature.” Constantly this would happen throughout the day at my grandparent’s house.

We adjust our thermostats in our houses because it changes the room temperature. In life there are mood and lifestyle temperatures that are set. Sometimes you go to work and someone is in a bad mood. People are upset and grouchy. The tone is set, but are we going to be a thermometer or a thermostat? Dr. Time Elmore once wrote, “People are either thermometers or thermostats. They merely reflect the climate around them, or they will set it. Leaders develop values and principles to live by and set the tone for others.” A thermometer reflects what the temperature is around it. If everyone is full of fear, they will also be fearful. A thermostat is something that sees the current temperature but changes it. In life we either simply reflect culture around us or we can change it.

When David went to fight Goliath the whole temperature of the situation was doom and gloom. For forty days they had been living in fear of Goliath. Yet when David walks into the situation, he changes the temperature. He defeats Goliath not with a sword or shield but, “In the name of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 17:45). God has called us to be a light in the darkness. We are to be hope where there is no hope. Are you a thermometer or a thermostat?

The story of David and Goliath has to rank as one of the most famous stories in the Bible. It resonates with us because of the consistent message. God does not look at the outward, but he looks at the heart.

The passage of Scripture which talks about this battle discusses how the Israelites and Philistines were at a standstill. Both armies on each side. One man from each army was to go and fight, the victor wins the entire battle.

For forty days’ no one would face Goliath. He was over nine foot tall and wore very heavy armor. Yet here arrives David, a young shepherd’s boy who was probably around the age of 15-16 years of age. He decides to fight Goliath, but not with a sword or shield but, “…in the name of the Lord…” (1 Samuel 17:45). As David goes toward Goliath, he strikes the giant with a sling and a stone. Goliath falls face forward and David takes his own sword to decapitate him.

There is significance in the names of David and Goliath. The name Goliath in Hebrew means, “Exile.” He is from Gath which means, “Winepress.” Many times in the Bible winepress represents God’s judgment (Isaiah 63:2; Lamentations 1:15; Revelation 14:20). Revelation 14:19 tells us, “19 So the angel swung his sickle…and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God.” When we put the two together he is Goliath (exile) from Gath (winepress/God’s judgment). Satan has been exiled because of God’s judgment and he wants you to believe that you too are exiled from God.

David’s name in Hebrew means, “beloved.” What does it take to kill a Goliath? No tanks, bazooka’s, swords or daggers, it takes someone who knows they are loved by God. Many people live in defeat because they think they are under God’s wrath because of what they have done wrong and what they haven’t done right. What we have to understand is that God has paid for our sins. All we have to do is receive what he has done.

We are no longer an exile from God because of wrath. We can now have a relationship with God because of the Cross. The punishment, judgment, and condemnation we deserved was placed on Jesus. Now we have right standing with God through Christ payment. Some have this idea that Jesus is the one full of love but God has anger. The truth is that they both have a heart of love. In fact, John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world…”

David was wearing shepherds clothing and King Saul wanted him to wear a soldier’s armor. It didn’t matter what he was wearing. He knew his identity! Yet it was not about what he looked like on the outside because he knew whose he was on the inside. It takes someone who knows they are beloved by God to conquer giants. If you enjoyed this column, your can here me preach at High Five Church every Sunday at 10:30am.

Some questions to think about: How old was David? Who was David in the Bible? Who was Goliath? How does Moneyball relate to the Bible? Billy Beane and the Bible?

The name Goliath means, “Exile” and Goliath is from Gath which means, “Winepress.” Winepress in the Bible has to do with God’s judgment ( Isaiah 63:2 ; Lamentations 1:15 ; Revelation 14:20 ). Revelation 14:19 tells us, “19 So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God.” Satan has been exiled because of God’s judgment and he wants you to believe that you too are exiled from God.

What makes you who you are today? Is it what you wear? Is it the car you drive? 1 Samuel 16:7 tells us, “But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

In this message Pastor Caleb talks about the purpose of prayer.

As I think about prayer there are many questions that are good for us to ask. For instance, why pray if God is all knowing? If God already knows the future, why do we need to tell Him? I believe that it is healthy in our life as a Christian to ask God questions. In fact, He is the very one we should go to when we have questions. 1 Corinthians 1:30 tells us, “…Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom…”

I believe that there are many reasons why we pray. One of the reasons is that throughout the Bible God uses people to complete His will. God used Moses to part the Red Sea, Esther to protect Her people, Paul to write most of the New Testament, and even an eight-year-old King named Josiah to turn His nation back to God. In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus told us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done” (Mathew 6:10). Why does God want us to pray for His will to be done? Because not everything that happens is His will. He is not in full control of everything that happens. That is why we are God’s hands and feet to this world.

God uses people. Even God became a man and died for us on the Cross. Why because He does not force His will on us. God has given us the ability to choose. Proverbs 18:21 reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” God created life with His tongue when He spoke out, “…Let there be light…”and boom, there was light (Genesis 1:3). Similarly, we can speak life with our own words. God now wants us to use our free-will to pray and seek the Lord.

Another reason is because it builds our relationship with God. Communication is one of the most important parts of a relationship. It also allows for a time to give thanks to God. I believe in the prayer sandwich. A prayer sandwich is when start the prayer with thanks and end it with thanks also. However, you like your prayer sandwich is up to you, but I like to at least start with a bun.

One final thought, God wants to be reminded. In Isaiah 43:26 God said, “Put Me in remembrance; Let us contend together; State your case, that you may be acquitted.” I think it has a lot to do with us. We forget things. It’s good to bring things up in remembrance. Have you ever known a family member was traveling to see you. Even though you know you will see them, when they arrive, when they show up, you are exited. I believe that God enjoys it when we pray. Even though He knows we are about to talk with Him, He enjoys it! God get’s exited when we pray.

We are continuing our series on prayer.

Does God hear silent prayers? I remember a couple years ago talking to a friend of mine who said that, “God only hears prayers spoken out loud.” This question bothered me because there are many moments in life when we do not have the chance to speak out loud. What is so amazing is how God revealed this question of mine through the story of Hannah. Now Hannah was a woman who had not yet had a child. During Biblical times it was seen negatively on the woman if they did not have any children. So Hannah decided to pray. The Bible follows the story saying, “…as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli was watching her mouth. 13 As for Hannah, she was speaking in her heart, only her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard....” (1 Samuel 1:12-13). Here the Bible clearly gives an instance of silent prayer. Hannah was speaking, “in her heart” as she prayed. God blessed Hannah with a wonderful son named Samuel. My friend the best prayers come from our heart. That is the beginning of genuine prayer.

In Japanese culture they bow as a sign of respect. We bow our heads when we pray out of respect also. We are taking our eyes and placing them on Christ. Ultimately it is not about whether we are on our knees or if our heads are bowed; it is about placing our trust in God. As you pray remember that you are speaking to a God who is full of love towards you. As believers, we go to God as our Father. He hears prayers that are silent, shouted, whispered, and sung Prayer is not complicated. It is communication with God. When we talk to God, we are in essence praying. Remember when Hannah prayed for her child, she prayed, “In her heart.” The Bible defines her words as a prayer, so even a silent prayer is a prayer. Pray always! Even if you cannot speak loudly, pray under your breath. Know that when you pray, you are talking to the one who loves you. You are praying to the one who gave His life for you.

Why does it say that, “God closed Hannah’s womb”? Did God close Hannah's womb? Why was Hannah barren?

I believe that this was an isolated incident where God was waiting for the right time for her to bear a child. This was not because of any sin and not because of a sickness. God was not punishing Her. God was going to use Samuel in a mighty way and wanted to wait until the time was perfect. Samuels timing was pivotal because He anointed the first two kings of Israel. Similarly, God was holding the covenant of grace for a special time. In fact there was even a time of silence which lasted 400 years where before Jesus was born. Hannah was a great woman of God whom eventually had a son named Samuel. This son was a great leader and prophet, in fact we might not have had King David had, Samuel not found him. Yet before Hannah had any children she was barren for some time, and she was sad because of this.

Hannah made God a promise that a razor would not touch his head. This is similar to Samson and the Nazirite Vow, but we cannot be sure if this was the case in the life of Samuel. God Created Grace

Her husband was a good man who had wealth and high position. Yet this man had two wives. 1 Samuel 1:5 tells us, “5 but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.”

By far my favorite website when studying a passage of Scripture is the Blue Letter Bible website. The reason is because it has the Greek and Hebrew languages there to read when you are looking at a passage of Scripture. The name, “Elkanah” means, “God created.” And the name, “Hannah” means, “Grace”

In this message Caleb talks about prayer. The Lord's Prayer under the new covenant. How should we pray? What does prayer under the new covenant look like?

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (3 John 1:2).

Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Isn’t it interesting how we can be anxious for so many things. Yet God wants us to worry about nothing. Why? Because we are thankful that God hears our prayers. There is a connection between prayer and thanksgiving. When we are praising God for what he has done, we are in essence praying. People think that prayer is something hard to do. Instead it is simply communicating with God. When you don’t know what to pray, thank God for three things. Thank Him for what He’s done, what He’s doing, and what He will do. When we appreciate God, there is a peace that fills our hearts. We feel better.

The world wants us to be worried about everything. It predicts the worst possible outcome. While we cannot ignore real problems, we can choose to not dwell on them. Being thankful doesn’t have to be limited to our circumstances, we can be thankful continuously. When God told the nation of Israel to march around the wall of Jericho, He wanted to show them a truth. The truth that, many times, praise precedes the victory. He told them to march around the walls six times silent, and on the seventh march to shout. As they shouted, “the wall fell down flat.” (Joshua 6:20). If your facing a difficulty, don’t dwell in anxiety. Go to God with gratitude and prayer. Be anxious for nothing. Instead prevail like the Israelites and give a shout of praise. Watch God move and give you peace over your life.

In this message Pastor Caleb talks about three of Davids Mighty Men. In each of these three we can learn a lesson. This was also recorded on Fathers Day so there is some references to that as well.

What is God’s kingdom about? Many things, and one of those things is the King. When David was fleeing from persecution from Saul, he went to hide in a cave. 2 Samuel 22:12-15 tells us, “13 Then three of the thirty chief men went down and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam…David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate!”

When I was in Brazil on a mission trip, I can remember having a craving for sweet tea. I couldn’t wait to get home and pour a glass of my Mom’s homemade Texas sweet tea. Similarly, this is what was happening with David.

These three mighty men notices that their King wanted water from a well in Bethlehem. Although David didn’t command them; he was simply talking out loud. What is interesting is what they do next. The Scriptures tell us, “16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David.” (2 Samuel 23:16). Wow how amazing is this! Not only do they do they risk their lives for their King, but they did it for a cup of water! Yet look at his response, “…Nevertheless he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord; 17 and he said, “Be it far from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.” (2 Samuel 23:16).

This was so precious to David that he saw it as only worthy for God. These three men had a heart for David. Since we are in the Kingdom of God, we are called to have heart for the things that God desires. The Scripture tell us what God desires. He wants us to, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…” (Matt. 6:33).

In the same way that these mighty men fought for David, we too are called to serve also. When we seek first God’s kingdom we are keeping first things first. He not only is our king but He is the, “King of Kings” (1 Timothy 6:15).

In this sermon, Pastor Caleb talks about knowing our identity in Christ.

Some of these questions are discussed such as: Who am I in Christ? What is my identity as a Christian? Am I a sinner saved by grace? What is the balance between becoming too extreme when thinking about our identity in Christ?

What is righeousness? What does it mean to be righteous?

Have you ever read a word in the Bible and never quite understood what it meant? I believe that this is relevant to the way many people view the word, righteousness. We know that it has meaning, but we are not sure what that meaning is.

So what does righteousness mean? It means that we are right with God. E. W. Kenyon once said, “Righteousness means the ability to stand in the presence of the Father God without the sense of guilt or inferiority.” This shows how Jesus stood in the presence of God. He wasn’t afraid, He was speaking with His father.

So what do we do to get righteousness? By receiving it as a gift. The Bible says, “For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:19). This verse says that we need two things, an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. Notice how righteousness is described as a gift instead of something you earn. There is no way to be righteous by our own efforts. It is by the obedience of Christ. We receive it by faith. When we realize this, it will change our walk with God. No longer should we try to earn our place with God.

The Bible explains that, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor. 5:21). On the cross Jesus made a beautiful exchange. He to swapped our sin with His righteousness. Now we can understand the value of this word. He gave us this ability to always have a relationship with God. It is a gift. Righteousness is not just another word that we use, it represents the great love that Christ gave.

What is the secret to great faith? We can understand this by two stories in the Bible. A centurion came up to Jesus saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented…say the word, and my servant will be healed... (Matt. 8:6-8). The Bible explains, Jesus marveled when He heard this. He said, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.” (Matt. 8:10).

Many people see the centurion and think that he had, “great faith” because he would have understood authority. He was in the Roman Army and was qualified. The problem with this theory is that there was another person who had “great faith” and was nothing like a soldier. Jesus came across only two people whom He called “great faith,” one was a centurion and the other was a homemaker.

The book of Mathew describes a Canaanite woman whose daughter was demon-possessed. She asked the Lord to heal her daughter, and Jesus told her, “’O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.’ And her daughter was healed at once.” (Matt 15:28).

Now a homemaker does not have the same authority or governing position as a soldier. So what is the common denominator between a Roman Centurion and a Canaanite woman? They were both gentiles. They had not been accustomed to the old covenant laws. They did not disqualify themselves because of their sins, and they were not under condemnation.

The law (the old covenant) is not based upon faith but on works. The Apostle Paul tells us in the book of Galatians that, “the law is not of faith” (Gal. 3:12). On the other hand, the new covenant is all about faith. It is based upon, “grace through faith” (Eph. 2:8). So instead of trying to earn salvation, healing, and blessings remember that it is only by grace that we can receive these things. The secret to great faith is grace. It is knowing that, through the cross, Jesus has caused us to receive His favor. The law disqualifies the best of us, but grace qualifies us! Everyone who believes in Christ is qualified to receive. When you see God’s grace, He sees your faith.

Colossians 2:13 tells us, “When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,” This forgiveness is something that we have. Because of the cross, God is able to righteously forgive and cleanse us of our sins. The ball is now in our court. Do you receive what he has done? The gospel is about faith through grace. God is not withholding forgiveness from us until we do enough good deeds. It is a gift of grace. When we believe in God, He saves us and we are forgiven. What causes us to live a holy life? Some think that if we preach that we have been completely forgiven, people will live an ungodly lifestyle. So the enemy has these false fences around the gospel of Grace to scare people away. The truth is that when you know you have been forgiven, you will live godly. 2 Peter 2:5-9 give an amazing list of character qualities such as: diligence, moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. As it lists these amazing attributes Paul explains what it takes to get these things. In verse nine he says, “9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.” Now what is the reason some do not have these great qualities? Because they have forgotten they have been forgiven from their sins. It is the very fact that we know we have been forgiven that we are set free. What is this purification from our sins? This is talking about how we have been cleansed from our sins. Because of the cross, we are under a waterfall of forgiveness. What I love about this passage is how he explains to us about how Peter is ultimately saying, “stop living in the past.” Of all of the disciples of Jesus, he would have had a hard time forgiving himself. Here he had denied Jesus multiple times and had to realize God’s true heart. He realizes that God had forgiven him of his sins. That is what changed his and that will change your life. What causes us to have self-control, moral excellence, and godliness? Remembering that you have been forgiven. It is that the very fact that you have been forgiven that causes our lives to change. We don’t realize how good God really is. We think that if we do enough, then God will love me. If you enjoyed this teaching, your can here me preach at High Five Church every Sunday at 10:30am

The Bible tells an amazing story about how Joseph was given a coat of many colors by his Father Israel. Genesis 37:3 says,” Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours” (NIV).

This coat is symbolic. Joseph’s coat had two different things that a normal coat did not. Number one, it was expensive because of the colors. Next it had long sleeves. The Amplified tells us that Israel gave Joseph a,” [distinctive] long tunic with sleeves.” Do you remember the scene of Jesus building a table, in the movie, “The Passion of the Christ?” This scene shows a joyful Jesus building a table with a sleeveless shirt. No one wears a big fury jacket to work, but they will wear something light and without sleeves. The reason Israel gave Joseph a coat with long sleeves was because he did not want his son to work (out in the fields) like his other brothers.

The other description of the coat deals with the cost. Think about this, coats during this time were never really colorful. They did not have the technology or the machinery to have colorful clothes, but when they did have a colorful coat, it was expensive.

This coat symbolizes our coat of righteousness. The Bible explains to us that, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Our new robe of righteousness means 2 things. It is expensive. Jesus paid a heavy price for our right standing with God. It has long sleeves. Jesus has already done it all, “It Is Finished!” All we have to do it believe. The book of Isaiah tells us about how we have been arrayed in a, “robe of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10).

If you believe in Jesus, you are righteous. God has placed a robe of righteousness on us because of Jesus’ finished work. Our robe of righteousness gives us right standing with God. This coat is a coat of rest. We cannot earn our standing with God. It is not about how good you are. It is about how good Jesus is!
