On the heels of a global pandemic, Covid-19 (Coronavirus), my wife, Joy Lockwood, and I recorded a podcast to talk about the difficult road we've been walking together, as a family, and share lessons learned, that we're still learning, as we enter into an unforeseen, unpredictable, future.

'Embrace trials because we know it produces character, and in the end that's a good thing.'

Today I bring you Gabriel Aviles... husband, father, shepherd, friend, confidant, music facts genius. Gabriel is just an all round great guy. I wanted to bring him onto the podcast because we have both been walking similar paths... seeking entrepreneurship, taking risks, trying new things, struggling, failing, yet still learning so much along the way, with a strong belief that our live's are held in greater hands. From moving to America as an immigrant, to walking away from a deeply rooted religion, taking chances at forging his own career path, trying his hand at various entrepreneur ventures... Gabe's curiosity and resiliency to try new things runs deep, but it doesn't come without it's fair share of difficulties. This is a conversation about faith, fear, failure, and faithfulness... all of which we all can relate. I hope you enjoy.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Danielle & Corey Pratt on living out a bold faith, family, gratitude, and the unexpected adventure in the fight against Lyme disease.

This podcast comes at an interesting time in regards to pop culture as Justin Bieber, after recently receiving some negative commentary on how he’s looking these days, has admitted to being diagnosed with Lyme Disease.

What is Lyme Disease? It’s a bacterium called Borellia transmitted to human through the bite of a blacklegged tick.

After recording this two part series, I was curious as to what all the confusion over Lyme Disease is, so I clicked on the first article I could find in regards to the Lyme Disease debate. It’s such an intense and ongoing issue that it’s actually been deemed the ‘Lyme Wars’.

In a Harvard study posted in June 2018, it states…

"The blood test the CDC recommends to diagnose Lyme checks for an immune response to the bacteria, not for the Borrelia itself." (www.health.harvard.edu/blog/lyme-dis…2018061814071)

So even if you have it, it could be overlooked, because physicians are not necessarily looking for the bacteria itself but for the an immune response.

In another article I discovered it states,

"The crux of the Lyme disease treatment debate is whether the condition exists in a chronic form. ILADS practitioners insist that it does; how else to explain the lingering symptoms many patients experience, which they say resolve only with long-term, high-dose antibiotic therapy? IDSA, however, takes the viewpoint that these patients—whose symptoms of fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and musculoskeletal pain are subjective and vague (belonging on the symptom list for chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia as well)—never had Lyme disease in the first place, and this is why standard therapy for the condition appears not to work for them." (www.mdedge.com/clinicianreviews/…s-about-treatment)

And guess who’s in the middle of this heated debate? The patients are… as usual.

Now let me say upfront that the point of this podcast is not to call anybody out or make anybody out to be a bad guy. I’m not here to damn the medical community, but it’s no secret that our health care system from the doctor’s offices, to the prescriptions, to the insurance, is incredibly flawed, increasingly so, and is in need of a major overhaul, that I’m afraid go so deep that it’s far too late.

This, however, is not a podcast about what’s wrong in the world, but what’s right. Enter Danielle Pratt. A beautiful, inspiring, determined, tired, yet faith filled wife and mother who believes her disease has been given to her for a purpose, despite all of the suffering and havoc it has wreaked on her and her family. This podcast is about enduring well, staying the course, fully embracing the hell that may be laid upon us, with the hope that there truly is a glory to beheld, if we will only keep the faith.

This podcast made me angry with Lyme, life, medicine, myself for being so faithless, but I walked away so inspired by this couple. I hope, God willing, if I have to face half the challenge that they’ve had to endure, that I do it with the optimism and hope with which they’ve done it.

Whether or not you have Lyme, another disease, or no disease at all… I hope that you’ll listen and be inspired to live your best life not in spite of but in the face of your worst and darkest moments. Not only have they suffered well, they’ve learned how to pick up their cross, follow their King, and create beauty out of the insane mess.

Enjoy…

The words we speak over ourselves, not only reveal what's already happening on the inside, but have the innate ability to empower or imprison us, building us up or tearing us down for the days to come.

Religion has become somewhat of a buzz word these days, and it's been used, more traditionally, in reference to people who attend any given church. However... religion was never Gods doing, it's man made, and whether we like it or not, recognize it or not... we've all dabbled, or are dabbling, in religion. That being said, the question is what, or who, then, are we worshiping?

Well, today’s podcast is a special one. I have been really looking forward to sitting down with my next guest for quite some time. She and I go back a few years because we have don e some touring together doing music, but that’s not what we’re talking about today. Although, we will get a backdrop to her life, where she’s from, family life, and so on… we’re more so focusing on her journey over the last couple of years.

Imagine, one day, suddenly feeling sick to your stomach with significant pain, and you go to the doctor only to discover, to your surpise, that you have stage 4 colon cancer, and then shortly thereafter, on top of the colon cancer, being told that you also have thyroid cancer… and all of this is happening at the very young age of 30. That’s what happened to my friend Amanda Wilcox Patterson. Her life was really just beginning, and suddenly she is faced with the brutal realities of how very fragile life is, and how fast it can come and go. Though this is a story of pain & fear, as you can imagine, it’s also, at the risk of sounding cliche, a story of faith, hope, & love.

What’s made her story so compelling is not just the poise and strength with which Amanda has shown, but her willingness to be very open and authentic over social media has been a breath of fresh air, especially in the middle of all the unraveling that seems to be taking place in the world around us. People from all walks of life have come together to show love and support for Amanda, and it’s been a beautiful thing to watch. The tears she cried, we cried, the pain she felt made us hurt for her, and the hope she reflected gave us hope.

I don’t want to take up too much time, because I want you to hear from her, but I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to sit and talk with her. A couple of things… the table and mic didn’t like each other, so there’s gonna be some noise from it here and there, also their neighborhood lawn care team stops by outside for a brief moment, but other than that… I think you’re really gonna love your time with Amanda. So that being said… here she is… the lovely Amanda Wilcox Patterson…

Well this weeks podcast is part two of my conversation with Jean Thomason, the person your kids probably know as the amazing Miss Patty Cake. If you haven’t had the opportunity to listen to Part 1, I encourage you to go back and do so, just so you can get a better understanding of her life and career as Patty Cake, why she does what she does, and the wisdom she has in helping parents engage and educate little minds on a level where they can begin to fully grasp & comprehend God. This week we really dig into the heart of who Jean Thomason is, which you’ll find is an endearing, compassionate, and loving human being. There’s so much good food for thought here. Woven througout the conversation we continue to talk about her new book entitled “PEP Talks” which is a ‘Can do guide in sharing God’s Big Love with Little Lives”… so whether you be a parent, grandparent, teacher, whatever… this book is an easy read but very insightful and very helpful in giving you practical advice as you try to better the lives of the children for which you are responsible. Remember… If we don’t take responsibility for our children, somebody else will. So here we go, part two of two, and just so you know before you call your kids into the room and tell them that Patty Cake is about to be on the internet… this is a conversation more for the adults. So ladies and gentlemen… put your seatbelts on for the fabulous Jean ‘Patty Cake’ Thomason….

Well this weeks podcast is part one of a two part conversation and it’s gonna be awesome because I am talking to the amazing Miss Patty Cake, whose real name is actually Jean Thomason… now you might not have a clue as to who I’m talking about… my kids do though… but if you don’t and you are a parent, a soon to be parent, or at least it’s on your radar to someday be a parent… you are more than likely racking your brain, or at least you will be, trust me, trying to figure out how in the heck you’re going to successfully raise children in this crazy world. That’s where Jean steps in and that is her specialty. If I could sum up what her life’s work of 20 years has been in my own words… I would say Jean engages and educates little minds on a level where they can begin to fully grasp & comprehend God. Now you may not believe in God… and that’s fine, but I encourage you to take time and listen to what she has to say. There’s so much good food for thought here. Jean has also written a new book entitled “PEP Talks” which is a ‘Can do guide in sharing God’s Big Love with Little Lives”… whether you be a parent, grandparent, teacher, whatever… this book is an easy read but very insightful and very helpful in giving you practical advice as you try to better the lives of the children for which you are responsible. My wife read over half the book the other night and said it was fantastic so we talk about her career as Patty Cake, the new book, her life, her struggles, and why she feels it’s necessary for us to start teaching our children about God from day one because if we don’t take responsibility for our children, somebody else will. So here we go, part one of two, and just so you know before you call your kids into the room and tell them that Patty Cake is about to be on the internet… this is a conversation more for the adults. Who is Ben Greene, you ask? Well… besides a solid family man, a person of faith, he’s authentic, transparent, and has devoted most of his still very young professional life to working with organizations such as 'World Vision', 'Food for the Hungry', and 'Feed the Children', serving developing countries around the globe, and now he’s the Director of Affiliate Partnerships of a new project, more specifically a new museum, being developed in Washington DC… and I will let him explain more about what that is, but all in all… Ben’s just an all around great guy.

We met years ago and have remained acquaintances throughout the years, but this is really the first time I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down with Ben and really getting to hear his heart, what makes him tick, his struggles, and more…

I hope this blesses you as much as it did me.

I honestly believe that if we are more intentional about talking less and listening more, about learning to walk a mile in another persons shoes, we can, and will, have more meaningful fruitful fellowship & relationship along life’s journey. We can’t understand people’s points of view if we don’t first hear what they have to say. People will hear you if you take time to hear them… if you don’t care, then expect people to not care in return. Some of the finest words that have ever been spoken are “do to others as you would have them do to you”. If you want people to genuinely celebrate with you when you have reason to celebrate, to identify with you in your pain, then strive in making the effort towards being empathetic to others. Love with open ears, an open heart, and an open mind. The next time it could be you in need of a friend. Empathy will pay great dividends in return if we will just learn to embrace one another, flaws and all, and I mean the real dirty stuff too. Be more interested in hearing rather than being heard, more interested in finding common ground rather than bickering about differences. It’s not easy, I know, believe me, I do… but I also believe, though it may not be the solution to all life’s problems… empathy is definitely a fantastic place to start. I’m learning to be more empathetic because I know how I feel when others are the same towards me, and as I put it into practice I’m finally realizing and understanding it’s value… it’s a life long journey of discovery, but I do hope that you’ll join me.

God bless.

“Don’t suffer alone, don’t suffer in silence, don’t isolate yourself just b/c you think nobody understands…” - Jody McBrayer

He’s a professional recording artist, one of the most brilliant singers you’ll ever hear, in fact, watching him, as his career unfolded, is one of the things that really inspired me to pursue music professionally… he’s just released a brand new solo CD, called “Keep Breathing”, but he’s most recognized as one of the founding members of the incredibly successful pop vocal group, Avalon.

Now some few months ago before I even began the work toward podcasting, Jody and I had some time to visit together, and yet again, Jody McBrayer inspired me, because as we talked candidly about life, listening to him openly share his pain, and the demons with which he wrestles made me realize how important it is for us as human beings to have others who will simply sit and listen, and I’ve not always been great at that… but what a privilege it is for us when anybody gives you the honor of seeing you as somebody they feel they can trust in sharing their life with, and what a blessing that somebody would consider you, or me, important enough to quietly, uncondemningly, with understanding… simply listen to what you, or I, have to say. In this world of social media, we are so connected, and yet so alone. I want to be better about connecting with people, heart and soul… we’ve got enough of the superficial… and Jody is far from that.

After that first meeting, I remember Jody telling me that he was concerned that I might think less of him… and honestly… that couldn’t be further from the truth. Knowing a little more about who he really is, I actually appreciate & think more highly of him now than I did, not knowing, and I know you will too… so with that… I give you the man of the hour…

It’s my joy to introduce Jason Barton. We were once business partners, more specifically we were once a band called 33miles for almost 10 years, he truly is one of the finest singers you’ll find in Nashville today, but more important than that, he’s somebody I consider to be my friend and my brother. This is the story of a man who discovered his dream somewhat by accident at the age of 5 and the journey on which that dream has taken him. Sometimes the dream takes different forms and leads us into unknown territory but the point is that we keep moving forward, keep striving. I hope this inspires you to keep dreaming your dreams and to never lose hope. It’s probably not gonna be all fun and games, it’s probably not gonna look like all you envisioned it would be, but over time you never know what good things may come of it all, if you just stay the course.
