The stalled Russian mechanised formation strung in a long line on the road to Kyiv is uncoiling, readying to strike the capital city of Kyiv. Simultaneously, news pours in of Russians focussing more and more on urban centres now; they don’t seem to be in control as yet of any population centre, though. The obvious indicators of Russian intentions of taking under control the complete Ukrainian coastline are there, however, population centres along the route continue to hold out.
As the battle progresses, NATO and the US continue to arm Ukrainians to stall the Russian armour in its tracks.

In our series on equipment with IAF, we have discussed about types of fighter aircrafts, operational support aircrafts like AWACS and Flight refuelling aircrafts (FRA),
The discussion in this episode is all about advanced technology systems on-board the fighter aircrafts that not only make them a potent war fighting machine but also enhances the capabilities of the pilot.
With the modernisation and rapidly advancing technology, while the weapons and the war fighting equipment have undergone huge changes, the systems on-board the fighter aircrafts have also undergone a transformation. In addition to modern avionics systems, today the fighter aircrafts are equipped with advanced systems like Head Up Display, Glass-Cockpit, Helmet Mounted Display system (HMDS) and Night Vision Goggles (NVGs).
The disadvantage is the increasing load on pilots. How far can the human brain, with all the training, cope with the increasing demand? However, all efforts are being made to automate to the maximum and allow the pilot to optimise machine refined options to a final human interface in decision making.

अरुणाचल प्रदेश और मिजोरम भारत के नॉर्थ ईस्ट के दो ऐसे राज्य हैं जो देश की सुरक्षा रणनीति का बड़ा हिस्सा रहे हैं । 20 फरवरी 1987 को इन दोनों को भारत के 23वें और 24वें राज्य का दर्जा मिला था। भारत का यह एक ऐसा फैसला था जिसने चीन को खासा परेशान कर दिया था। अरुणाचल प्रदेश को संपूर्ण राज्य का दर्जा मिलेगा इसके बारे में चीन ने कभी उम्मीद नहीं की थी। चीन, अरुणाचल प्रदेश की 90,000 स्क्वॉयर किलोमीटर की जमीन पर अपना दावा जताता है। चीन ने मई 2020 मेंअपने नक्शे में बदलाव किया. इस नए नक्शे में चीन ने भारत के नॉर्थ ईस्ट के बड़े राज्य अरुणाचल प्रदेश को अपनी अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीमाओं में दिखाया था।

भारत की संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति स्थापना में योगदान देने की एक लंबी और गहरी परंपरा रही है। भारत संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा अभियानों में योगदान देने वाले देशों में सबसे आगे रहता है और अब भारत सेना की एक टुकड़ी साउथ सूडान जाने की तैयारी कर रहा है। भारत के ढाई लाख सैनिकों ने अबतक संयुक्त राष्ट्र के 71 मिशनों में से 51 मिशनों में अपना योगदान दिया है।

The situation in Eastern Ladakh and the bellicosity of our Northern neighbour has led to the government approving the Emergency Procurement powers by the armed forces once again. These powers have been welcomed by both the forces and the defence industry, as was more than evident during the India Defence Conclave hosted by bharatshakti.in in October 2021.
However, are such powers really a long-term solution for our defence equipment procurement? Will these powers prove useful in terms of sustained capability building? गोवा का भारत में विलय को 60 साल पूरे हो गए। हर साल 19 दिसंबर को गोवा मुक्ति दिवस 'ऑपरेशन विजय' में भारतीय फौज की जीत की याद दिलाता है। जिसने गोवा को पुर्तगाली शासन से मुक्त कराया था। 1961 में पुर्तगालियों के साथ राजनयिक प्रयासों की विफलता के बाद भारत सरकार द्वारा ऑपरेशन विजय चलाकर

This month half a century ago, India defeated Pakistan in a war that lasted just 13 days and led to the creation of Bangladesh. As a part of our Technology Series, we bring to our listeners the intricacies of Naval guns on the decks of our ships, and more importantly, new technologies that’s gradually replacing legacy equipment.
The modern trends being pursued include Laser Guns and also Electro-Magnetic Rail Guns (EMRG). The induction of Laser Guns will reduce the ammunition inventory onboard the ships with non-kinetic means being used. Whereas, EMRGs fire projectiles that are stored onboard. These projectiles are expected to reach Mach 2 and above speeds and can cause destruction at the target end on account of the large Kinetic Energy.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated seven new defence PSUs to the nation, created out of the 41 ordnance factories that were a drag on the defence budget. Proposals to corporatize the ordnance factories had been doing the rounds for over a decade but in 2019 the Centre decided to go for it. The Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) has been a project in the waiting for a prolonged duration. It’s only recently that the MoD has issued a Request for Information (RFI). In 1999, CCS cleared a 30-year submarine construction plan in which 24 Submarines were to be inducted into the Indian Navy by 2030. After a long delay, a contract was concluded with Mazagon Docks Ltd to construct 6 submarines in collaboration with Naval Group, France. Termed as Project 75 these Scorpene submarines started joining the Indian Navy in 2017. 3 Submarines have joined the force to date and 3 more shall be joining soon.

Chinook helicopters, basically an advanced multi-mission machine can also be classified as a medium-lift helicopter that’s also seen more combat employment than possibly any other helicopter in that class, globally. The Indian Air Force has inducted 15 of these, and with their ceiling limit allowing operations in very high altitudes, they are a huge force multiplier to Commanders in these difficult areas. The Air Defence Missile Systems that the Indian Air Force (IAF) mans are critical to the security of the nation. 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese troops died on 15 June 2020 at Galwan, Eastern Ladakh. The Indians rushed fresh formations to ultimately transform Eastern Ladakh into a fortress. The Indians also repositioned their formations in the Central Sector opposite Uttarakhand and the Eastern Sector comprising of the borders across Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
Though there was a limited withdrawal of troops in the area of Pangong Tso, there are issues to be resolved at various other places in Eastern Ladakh. Further, Chinese formations in-depth remain and are served by an excellent infrastructure allowing early induction to forward locations.
Under the circumstances, what options do the Chinese have against India and the hot spots of Taiwan and Senkaku Islands in the Taiwan Straits and East China Sea, respectively? What would be their priorities?
The fact also remains that the economically and militarily more powerful nations are coming together to battle Chinese expansionism. The Quad’s coale scing is driven substantially by Chinese belligerence. Helicopters are used for a variety of functions in the battlefield, and logistics is but one of them. Helicopters for logistics functions, though they can also be used in multiple roles, are classified according to their load-carrying capacities. We have the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) that have lighter carriage capacities and have been extremely successful in all types of terrain configurations. Our mainstay, however, remains the Mil MI 17 V5 and the MI 26 Russian helicopters.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the manufacturers of ALH are also pursuing a medium-lift helicopter project to replace the Russian machines.

Modern air forces use a variety of equipment to enhance the capability of their aircrafts. Two major force-multiplier platforms used by the IAF are its fleets of Flight Air Refuelling aircrafts and Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS). The Flight Air Refuelling aircrafts enhance the range of the fighter aircrafts for deep strike into enemy’s hinterland, in addition to a host of other tasks. The AWACS provide the fighters with relevant data about enemy aircrafts in the air, far deeper than ground based radars can provide.
Currently, in addition to our holdings of AWACS procured from abroad, an Indian system on an Embraer aircraft has been produced by the DRDO: NETRA Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system.

Of late some articles in the media have raised the issue of the Chinese not having withdrawn from the areas of Depsang, Gogra, and Hot Springs, along with their withdrawal from the areas of Fingers 4 to Finger 8. It appears that the fine print of the agreement during the 9th Corps Commanders' meet has been lost in the euphoria of the Chinese withdrawal from the Fingers area. The fact of withdrawal from the areas of Depsang, Gogra, and Hot Springs being issues that would be negotiated post the Fingers being cleared was stated clearly by the Northern Army Commander in his interview by Nitin Gokhale and also the RM in his statement in the Parliament.
The odd article in the media has also expressed the concern that we perhaps sold ourselves short to the Chinese while withdrawing from Rechin La and Rezang La. Could the Indian withdrawal from these features be leveraged more?

The IAF is rushing tons of equipment to densely populated centers, remote and high altitude areas to fight the pandemic. It has adopted a hub and spoke strategy to optimize its capabilities and blend these with the national effort to arrest the spread of the virus.

The Defence Minister’s statement in the Parliament on the situation in Eastern Ladakh informed the nation of the agreement reached in the 9th Military Commanders Meet and the substantial progress made at the level of Corps Commanders. As per the agreement, both parties will withdraw to positions occupied before the flare up in April 2021.
Viewed objectively, it’s a substantial achievement by India, brought about by the grit, determination and a tactically advantageous position created by our troops. Of course, the diplomatic parleys and meetings between the leadership of both countries had much to do with the progress.

He has commanded a fighter squadron and has served as Chief Operational Officer of two premier fighter bases of Western Air Command. During all these tenures, there were no incidents! accidents. He has also functioned as Director of Strategic Intelligence in Strategic Force Command. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor, Fighter Combat Leader and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner. He is an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College. He has undergone Higher Command Course at MHOW, where he was awarded the Commander's medal for research work on nuclear capabilities in the region. He has attained first division in both MPhil and MSc (Defence Studies) degrees. He has been commended twice by the Chief of Air Staff and awarded three stars of flight safety. In his previous appointment as Commanding Officer, of one of the Tactical Air Centre (TAC), he earned the admiration from commanders at all levels of South Western Command (Army), for his initiative in conducting training seminars and joint operational exercises up to Brigade level in the concerned Corps zone. The unit also conducted the highest number of Counter Surface Force missions in Exercise Gauntlet- III and IV Under his leadership, the unit was adjudged as the 'Best TAC' for the year 2011.

The Indian position in Eastern Ladakh is now an advantageous one for us. In the 6th Corps Commander level talks, the tone was different. The Chinese wanted a withdrawal to positions before our end August 2020 pre-emptive occupation of the Rejang La - Rechin La ridgeline. In the long history of India-China boundary dispute, a few incidents remain a landmark. The 1962 war is the biggest of them all; the 1967 clash at Nathu La in Sikkim is another. But another episode of a bloody encounter between Indian and Chinese soldiers that happened in Arunachal Pradesh in 1975 is not so well known. It is recorded in public domain as the last time before 2020 when shots were fired on the disputed border. Four soldiers of the para-military force Assam Rifles were killed. There is no information on how many Chinese--if at all--were killed in that clash. For the first time, we bring you the real story of what happened on 20 October 1975 at a remote mountain pass called Tulung La. Col Baliram Shah (rted), then Commanding the 3/1 Gorkha Rifles unit at Sela was given the job of retrieving the bodies of the four soldiers. He narrates the incident in detail to Nitin A.
