There’s a particular loneliness that comes with succeeding in ways your community celebrates while quietly unraveling in ways they refuse to acknowledge. Shweta Ravi Shankar and Rema Chari know this terrain intimately. As South Asian women who’ve navigated immigration, motherhood, and multiple cultural identities, they’ve learned that the hardest migration isn’t across oceans – it’s the journey from who you were raised to be to who you’re brave enough to become. This conversation goes beyond surface-level empowerment to explore the messy, non-linear work of healing generational patterns, challenging mental health stigma, and building communities where women’s full humanity is finally welcome.

Key Takeaways
Building authentic communities requires both courage to show up fully and compassion to hold space for others
Living between cultures requires constant negotiation of conflicting identities and expectations
True transformation begins with unlearning the societal scripts written for you, not by you
Motherhood often becomes the catalyst that forces us to confront unexamined beliefs and inherited trauma
Mental health struggles remain deeply stigmatized in South Asian communities, creating isolation when support is most needed
Challenging cultural norms means redefining success on your own terms, not your community’s metrics
Vulnerability and shared experiences create pathways to healing that isolation never can
Intentional practices—gratitude, mindfulness, continuous learning—anchor us during upheaval

Why This Episode Matters
This conversation breaks the silence around what South Asian women abroad carry but rarely speak aloud—the invisible weight of cultural expectations, the isolation of motherhood far from home, the exhaustion of performing perfection while crumbling inside. By sharing stories marked by vulnerability rather than polish, Shweta and Rema create permission for listeners to acknowledge their own struggles and reimagine what’s possible beyond the limitations they’ve inherited. In communities where mental health remains taboo and women’s needs consistently rank last, this episode offers something revolutionary: validation, practical wisdom, and the radical hope that transformation isn’t just possible—it’s your birthright at any stage of life.

What happens when life throws you an unimaginable curveball? For Moushmi Kapadia, her child’s muscular dystrophy diagnosis marked the beginning of an unexpected journey, not just as a caregiver, but as a woman rediscovering herself.

Moushmi opens up about navigating the emotional chaos that followed her child’s diagnosis, the crushing weight of societal expectations around motherhood, and the powerful realization that caring for herself wasn’t selfish; it was survival. Through tennis courts, mountain trails, and long bike rides, she found her way back to joy, one pedal stroke at a time.

This episode is for anyone who’s ever felt lost in their role as a caregiver, parent, or partner. It’s a reminder that finding yourself again isn’t just possible – it’s essential.

Key Takeaways
Acceptance isn’t giving up: it’s redirecting your energy toward what you can actually influence
Self-care isn’t selfish: it’s the foundation that allows you to show up for others
Not everyone will understand your journey, and that’s okay, find your people
Physical movement can be emotional medicine, whether it’s sports, hiking, or dancing
Unlearn the “shoulds: especially around parenting and caregiving roles
Face your fears incrementally, including the scary ones about being away from your loved ones
*Your happiness matters, not just for you, but for everyone around you

Why This Episode Matters If you’re a parent, caregiver, or anyone who’s lost themselves in the needs of others, Moushmi’s story will resonate deeply. This conversation challenges the narrative that self-sacrifice equals love and offers a different path. One where taking care of yourself isn’t the opposite of caring for your family, it’s what makes it sustainable.

Maria Menezes, Dr. Dipali Prabhu, and Sophia Gonsalves are the founders of Circle of Grey – a community built around one simple belief: growing older should feel connected, creative, and joyful.

They talk about the very real loneliness many older adults face, especially after COVID changed the way we interact. What started as a small effort to check in on seniors has evolved into a vibrant space where people come together to talk, create, laugh, and feel seen.

The conversation is honest and refreshing. Maria, Dipali, and Sophia share how community activities, from art to storytelling to simple weekly chats, help boost confidence and bring back a sense of purpose. They also talk about why younger people need these intergenerational relationships just as much as seniors do.

Their hope? To build a world where aging isn’t something quiet or isolating, but a stage of life filled with connection, meaning, and friendship.

Key Takeaways
Social connection is powerful in reducing loneliness — especially for older adults.
COVID-19 changed how we relate to one another, making intentional interaction even more important.
Younger and older generations both benefit when they spend time together.
Creativity can restore confidence and spark joy at any age.
Offering a variety of activities keeps seniors engaged and excited.
The Circle of Grey hopes to expand into more in-person gatherings.
Ageing is not a decline — it’s another chapter with its own beauty.
Community involvement empowers everyone involved, no matter their age.
Meaningful connections are essential for emotional well-being.
Circle of Grey is building a space where friendship and joy are central to ageing.

Despite increasing visibility, there remains a profound lack of understanding about the transgender experience in our society. Too often, trans individuals face discrimination, violence, and appalling prejudices rooted in ignorance about what it means to be transgender.

In this episode, Celia Sandhya Daniels courageously takes us through her journey from struggling with gender dysphoria as a child without the language to understand it, to her evolution in embracing her authentic identity as a trans woman.

Her story lays bare the confusion, isolation, and pain that can come from having one’s inner sense of self conflict with societally-imposed gender roles and expectations. Celia’s narrative highlights critical issues like:

  • The importance of education and having proper terminology to articulate one’s truth
  • The vulnerabilities and risks trans people face, even in LGBTQ+ spaces
  • The challenges of coming out and navigating relationships through transition
  • Overcoming trauma to live visibly and use your voice for change

As a recognized LGBTQ+ leader and advocate, Celia doesn’t just share her experiences – she provides invaluable insights into how to be a better ally through empathy, unlearning biases, and active support of the trans community.

The importance of education and taking the time to learn and use the correct pronouns and terminology cannot be overstated. By making this effort, we validate trans individuals and see them as they want to be seen – not through our own limited lens or preconceived notions. Using proper pronouns lets trans people know their identity is recognized, accepted and respected, rather than erased or undermined. It’s about seeing them for who they truly are.

Pooja Tripathi is a first-generation Indian American actor, filmmaker and violinist based in New York City. She grew up in Pittsburgh & NYC, and studied at Carnegie Mellon University.

Pooja is the co-creator of new Dutch American dramedy series Amsterdam Ave. which was created by a 90% female crew and takes place in The Netherlands and NYC. Having a predominantly female crew was an intentional choice as she believes, the industry does not provide enough opportunities for women in filmmaking.

Even though Pooja has played the violin since she was three, Pooja never thought herself to be an artist. She grew up thinking she would have a stable corporate career and dabble in arts as a hobby. After working at corporate jobs in top fashion houses, Pooja realized she was unhappy. She found the courage to quit and get into filmmaking with the help of her friend Dionne. Today, Pooja considers herself an artist first, and this is Pooja's charming story of letting the artist in her shine!

Anahata Meher is a Shamanic practitioner based in Goa. Before finding Shamanism, she was a city brat living a comfortable life with no worries or ambition. Despite having all the comforts, Anahata found that she was angry all the time, to the extent that her husband suggested she seek help to manage the anger. She sought help from a hypnotherapist, but it was a trip to the mountains that truly changed her life. It was here that her journey of seeking began and led her to Shamanism which she believes changed her very existence.

Shamanism recognises and honours three worlds: the lower world, where one connects with mother Earth and the animal spirit guides. The middle world, which is one's reality and the upper world, which is the home of the celestial and spirit guides; a Shaman travels through these three levels to heal. Water is the most important natural resource in the world; without it, life cannot exist. 2.1 billion people across the world lack access to clean drinking water. Marita Peters, the Executive Director of Surge UAE chapter, is determined to change that.

Marita's childhood friend, Shilpa Alva, is the founder of Surge. Growing up together, they had a shared dream to do something that makes a difference in the world. Both Shilpa and Marita shared similar lives growing up. They were NRI kids who mostly visited India only during the holidays. It was during these trips they realized that running water was not available to everyone and the thought that they must do something about it occurred to them. It was this thought that later led to Shilpa setting up Surge, a non-profit organization that focusses on providing clean water and sanitation in water-stressed areas.

Since its inception Surge has impacted over a million people across the world. Marita shares her wonderful story of fulfilling a childhood dream with her best friend, Shilpa and how their bond is now enriching the lives of so many across the world.

“Don’t you have long sleeves you can wear while you’re outside?”, “I brought a new brightening face scrub for you to try.”, “Try not to stay in the sun too long, you’ll get dark." South Asian kids listen to these kinds of comments all the time. And not from outsiders but people close to our hearts. This was also the case for Anu Kumar. Born in New York to Indian Immigrant parents, from Southern India, Anu moved and was raised in Knoxville, TN. Anu was confused when she realized that people, who are like her of Indian descent didn't like their dark skin and people who are from around the world who have much lighter skin wanted to become darker. Anu shares her story of growing up in almost two different worlds, one where her skin colour was appreciated, even desired—the other where she was constantly reminded that it was something undesirable and in need of being fixed. She talks about how she overcame Colorism, identifying and accepting her inner thoughts on this subject and working on being comfortable in her own skin.

Pashmina was born in Thailand and brought up in a traditional Indian family in Hong Kong. At sixteen she met and fell in love with her soulmate Willian. They dated in secret for ten years - why secret, because he came from a very different culture and community - literally, one that is at the other end of the world.

He's black Brazilian and their formative years together as a couple were extremely painful as they were shunned, ostracised and looked upon by her fellow community as a traitor and a woman who had no sense of value. Today, her little family of four, her husband, her and her two beautiful daughters live a life of compassion and understanding. They have taught each other to be steadfast human beings and live a life full of love with no racial boundaries. She's also built a successful career as an international best selling author of The Cappuccino Chronicles trilogy and the founder of the Online Authors Office, a platform to help other aspiring authors.

Karina Calver is a survivor of incest. She shares her story of enduring rape and how she has turned her life around to become the woman she is today.

The silence that surrounds incest survivors can make them feel isolated, and Karina hopes by sharing her story others will know they are not alone.

Survivors are all around us, among our friends, at school, at work, places of worship and it's likely we don't know they are survivors. The taboo around the subject makes it hard for them to share their stories and for others to understand the impact this can have. Karina wants to bring the conversation out in the open where nothing is a taboo anymore so that victims do not need to be scared to speak their truth, fear seeming inadequate and not being an equal.

She wants others to know that they are capable of building a life of their choice filled with love, happiness and surrounded by people who are willing to help every step of the way.

She is our NRI Woman and this is her story!

Until next time keep learning, keep inspiring and be kind.

Sonia Anand believes stillness is the key to restoring the balance within ourselves and on a larger scale the world. She thinks when the organic beauty of our soul evolves through gentle practices we automatically begin to radiate love health and positivity to the universe.

Sonia was like most of us, wearing many hats at the same time. From raising her young kids, managing the home to juggling her corporate job, Sonia felt like she was being pulled in ten different directions at the same time. This overly scheduled and hard life left her feeling physically exhausted most of the time. It reached a point where she was so stressed with the daily routine that she thought she couldn't take it anymore. It was at this point she was diagnosed with depression. She sought the necessary treatment needed to help her get on track, but she also knew she needed something more.

She decided to explore Yoga to help her cope with the depression. That decision changed the course of her life. She eventually went on to give up her corporate career and decided to pursue life as a Yoga teacher and Acharya or spiritual leader. She hasn't looked back since. She has found a connection with her inner-self through yoga, meditation and stillness and she hopes that in sharing the skills she learnt, will help others connect with themselves.

She is our NRI Woman, and this is her story. Until next time, keep learning, keep inspiring and be kind!

For our season finale, we're talking about a subject that is mainly Indian- Joint families, an arrangement where many generations bound by a common relationship live together in the same household. It’s common to see this kind of living arrangement in Indian families residing outside India as well. Some of us may have grown in one, and others married into one. Either way, it's likely we know of someone who is part of a joint family.

Joining us in our conversation today is Aashna Mulgaonkar who was born and grew up in one of the largest joint families in India. At its peak, 150 members lived together in the same house - the Mhamai Kamat family in Goa.

The Mhamai Kamat family has a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

Aashna shares the story of her family, its history, how it grew to so many members and what it was like growing up with so many people around where one was never alone.

Our guest, Padmini Gupta, is an Oxford graduate, World Economic Forum Fellow and a social entrepreneur tackling a USD 5 billion industry in the Middle East.

She combines her passion for solving social issues with building an enterprise that is sustainable and profitable.

RISE, her fintech company, is her first foray as a social entrepreneur, and she hopes to change the lives of the 750,000 maids and nannies currently working in the UAE so they can upskill and plan for a better future for themselves.

Padmini shares her story of why she thinks the world needs more social entrepreneurs and how to raise the next generation more aware of the social circumstances around them.

"It was many years ago I met Elie Wiesel, the illustrious writer, and Nobel Laureate. I told him how he inspired me and how I wished to live his values. But today's a day that made me realize I already am.

He once wrote “No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them.”

Today was a day of many highs, of moms and dads sharing stories about how they had encouraged and helped their nannies move to their dream careers, and Nannies that were encouraged by my message and wished they had the courage to share it with their employers (some of whom called me in an angry fit and said my message had offended them.)

I work to empower the women who empower other women and men, to break down these barriers that we hold so dear. I work to keep racism, sexism, poverty away. I work for nannies, for maids, for drivers, for cooks, and I work for mothers who want to see their helpers grow. I work to break down these collective views of the angry women and to amplify the voices of the invisible, and those who support them. I work because I value humanity more than political correctness". - Padmini Gupta

Feng Shui means wind and water and is a traditional Chinese concept linking the destiny of a man to his environment. Samita Khanna is a master consultant of Feng Shui with over twenty years of practice.

The fundamental principle is that energy known in China as "Chi" flows through one's environment and all objects possess chi that can be used to bring luck, wealth and opportunity into one's home or business environment. It's believed the reverse is also true.

As an example, we’ve all had years where things move in the direction we want it to, everything is smooth and effortless, and then there are years where everything is a struggle. One needs to look back and see when did this start, was it when they moved to a new home or was it when space was redecorated. So many things could have contributed to one inadvertently fostering negative chi.

Samita has seen first hand how Feng Shui has transformed her life and she shares tips to help you get started to foster the right chi in your lives.

From a psychotherapist to a makeup consultant after a 20-year gap, our guest today Sanyukta Kumar is an exemplar of new beginnings.

She moved to a new country with her kids when the youngest one was just three months old and her older daughter was four. Sanky, as she is lovingly known, decided like so many of us do, with a move and new additions to the family, to take a break from her job.

When she was ready to go back to her career, she found that it was not an option. The laws of the country demanded that her practice is current. The break meant she could not continue as a psychotherapist, a job she is passionate about and loves.

That didn't stop her though, and she embarked on an entirely new career as a makeup consultant and launched a consultancy "Blend by Sanky" where she teaches women makeup application techniques.

She believes makeup is more than just about beautifying oneself. She thinks makeup done well helps one feel positive and face the world with quiet confidence.

Listen in as she shares her story and why she thinks we should stop holding ourselves back. Our age does not hold us back from beginning a new career; it's our belief that it does!

Harsha is a pilates instructor, mum to three and a vagabond at heart. She believes everything she does must have a purpose and she lives her life with that in mind. Discovering one's Ikigai requires self-reflection and the simplest way to find it according to author Dan Buettner is by making three lists: your values, things you like to do, and things that you are good at. The cross-section of the three lists is your Ikigai.

One's Ikigai also takes into consideration what one can be paid for and it's at the cross-section of these four that one can find their Ikigai!

Ultimately discovering our Ikigai means we can live a life of joy, fulfilment and balance in our daily lives as our passion, family, jobs are not isolated parts of our lives but interconnected and it's at the intersection point, we can find lasting happiness and contentment.
