In this intriguing episode, join us as we sit down with the brilliant neuroscientist, Dr. Umberto Olcese, to explore the captivating world of neurophysiological sensory perceptions and the enigmatic realm of sleep.

We start by unraveling the nature of sensory perceptions and how the brain transforms sensory stimuli into perceptual experiences. Discover why the same stimulus can be perceived differently, like in the famous gorilla experiment or when individuals react differently to objects like a flower and a gun.

Dr. Olcese sheds light on how sensory perceptions can respond to traumatic experiences and adapt in response to the outside world. We gain insight into the brain's remarkable plasticity and resilience.

Moving on, we take a brief tour of the brain's anatomy and how sensory receptors connect to neurons, leading to the production of chemicals that shape our experiences.

The conversation then delves into the elusive topic of consciousness. Dr. Olcese discusses states of consciousness, particularly in the context of end-of-life diseases, and intriguingly explores the differences in consciousness between humans and animals.

No discussion on the brain is complete without touching on sleep. Dr. Olcese shares his perspective on what sleep truly is and enlightens us about different types of sleep, including brain waves associated with them. He also explains how meditation can help us reach certain brain wave patterns similar to those experienced during sleep.

Have you ever wondered why we remain unaware of our surroundings while sleeping? Dr. Olcese reveals the importance of sleep for memory consolidation and the possible reasons behind dreaming.

As a researcher, Dr. Olcese lets us in on how experiments are set up to minimize external disturbances and optimize sleep quality. Find out why activities like watching TV before bedtime can disrupt our sleep patterns.

Finally, we explore the driving forces behind our need for sleep and how much sleep is optimal. Dr. Olcese sheds light on the specific brain structures and consciousness that require this essential activity.

If you've ever been fascinated by the mysteries of the human brain, perception, and sleep, this episode is a must-listen. Dr. Umberto Olcese's expertise will leave you enlightened and in awe of the complexities of the mind. So, tune in and join us on this captivating journey of self-discovery and understanding.

During the second part of our episode together, Dan KJ Vercammen shares with us how Taoist philosophy offers a unique perspective on death that differs from the Western worldview. He explains that Taoists view death not as an end, but rather as a natural part of the cycle of life. Death is seen as a transformative process, where energy is released and transformed into something else rather than disappearing entirely. This perspective is rooted in the Taoist belief in the interconnectedness of all things and the idea that everything is constantly in a state of flux and change.

Dan also touches on the concept of reincarnation in Taoism and how it relates to the cycle of life and death. He explains that in Taoism, reincarnation is not seen as a linear process, but rather as a cyclical one, where souls are reborn and transformed in an ongoing cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

In addition to discussing death, the episode also explores the symbolism of the yin and yang symbol in Taoism. Dan explains how the yin and yang symbol represents the balance of opposing forces in the universe, such as light and dark, hot and cold, and male and female. He goes on to explain how the yin and yang symbol is a visual representation of the Taoist concept of harmony, which emphasizes the importance of balance and the interdependence of all things.

Overall, this episode offers a fascinating look into the philosophical underpinnings of Taoism and Chinese culture. Through our guest Dan KJ Vercammen's expertise, we gain a deeper understanding of Taoist views on death and the cyclical nature of life, as well as the symbolism of the yin and yang and how it relates to the concept of harmony.

Dear listeners,

I want to thank you for embarking with us on this journey of the second season of MindUnplugged. We had a lot of fun together, and I hope that the stories shared during this season inspired you and your life for the better.

I chose to close this season with a poem because, as Gilda Radner puts it, I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.

Finally, I look forward to welcoming you again in the next season, bringing you more stories, more inspiration and grace of daily life.

Until then becomes Now,

Dragos
@mindunplugged

PS.If by Rudyard Kipling - (‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies)

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Mind Unplugged. You tuned in today for our second episode with the one and only Christopher Paolini!

During this episode, we will inquire together into his sci-fi book, To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars and dive into some of the philosophies around the universe and its role in our lives.

Christopher shares with us what the research for To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars was like for him, considering his non-mathematical/physical background and all the work he put into understanding the depths of the fundamental laws of physics to tailor such an extraordinary adventure for us.

Some other topics we discuss in this episode are whether the universe follows an independent order or does free will exist. We also converse about matter and consciousness of and in the universe, death and afterlife and how learning to find meaning in life is perhaps the greatest challenge for us as humans. In addition to all these, we still believe that you may not have had enough of us, so we carry a chat on how tools like affirmations and visualisations can be compelling for one's daily life.

Last but not least, Christopher tells us about his upcoming projects and releases, among which are a prequel for To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars, and hey...a new dragon book!

We hope you will enjoy this episode!

Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of MIND unplugged. You tuned in today for a great episode about physics, philosophy, and life. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Dr. Marcos Crichigno; Aside from his full-time profession of being a seeker and questioning life’s and universe’s big questions, Marcus is a physics research associate at the Imperial College of London. During our episode, you can expect lots of thought-provoking chats on philosophy, life and the universe, and who knows, maybe we can find some answers by inquiring about these topics together today.

Marcos and I have done our best to provide you through this episode both answers and provoke new questions about our lives and existence. Some of the topics we address in this episode are:

  • Philosophy & Science
  • Is the Universe infinite?
  • Does the Universe have a mind of its own?
  • Is there free will or does the Universe work in an independent order?
  • How do the laws of physics influence our daily lives?
  • The ending of Time

All these topics have been cracked up open and discussed in this new episode.

We hope you will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed doing it for you!

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of MIND unplugged. You tuned in today for a lovely episode about mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Meghan Read. First of all, Meghan is a dear and inspiring friend of mine. She is a well being and spiritual seeker in our human realm, active in the fields of Reiki, crystal and sound healing, life coaching and more; we will learn much more about her activities throughout today’s episode. She advocates mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health in both personal and corporate environments.

In this episode, Meghan shares her stories and how she started walking down the path of holistic healing. It all began with the belief that the human body can heal itself; with enough determination, faith in one's mind and body, one can regenerate himself.
This episode also features a visualisation exercise. This exercise can be tried out by yourself by following her guidance. This exercise can help us determine how our own intuition speaks to us. May that be through hearing, feeling, seeing, through the mind's eyes and ears that is something we are all gifted with.

Meghan has devoted herself to bringing holistic healing practices to business-corporate environments worldwide. At this moment, she started building a community where corporate-working individuals (and not only) can join. This community work helps with:

  • Reduce Stress and Burnout
  • Increase Connection, Inclusivity & Belonging
  • Find Balance & Get Inspired
  • Increase Joy and Positive Energy
  • Be Your Authentic, Whole, and Best Self

In addition to those mentioned above, the right tools are there for them as well, tools such as:

  • Monthly Virtual Group Reiki Sessions
  • Live Guided Meditation Sessions
  • Pop-up Workshops & Live Coaching
  • Practical Tips, Tools, & Inspiration
  • Knowledge Share
  • Special Guest Speakers
  • Web & App Access

Finally, I recommend you get in touch with Meghan or give her work a chance and explore her services. If there's something constantly uncertain, it is the things we do not know whether or not we resonate with. If you have ever been interested in coaching or holistic healing practices, she's the go-to person.

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Mind Unplugged. You tuned in today for an inspiring episode about writing, storytelling, dragons, dragon riders and of course, personal development. I have the pleasure of hosting, Christopher Paolini!

Christopher is the author of the Inheritance Cycle, The Fork, The Witch and the Worm, and his Sci-Fi debut, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Among other things, Christopher is an educator and inspiring personality in the world of writers and beyond.

Today's episode is a walk back in time for me. A time when I was a child, and I was reading Christopher's books. Yet, this time, having the chance to speak to the creator of the Inheritance Cycle and seeing through his eyes the adventures that brought about the stories in his books. How he started writing at 14 years old and dealing with the youthful inexperience of life at that age; how the process of writing and getting started in this business is extensively laborious yet can be quite compelling for one's heart and spirit and how structuring stories and ideas can actually get you as an aspiring writer on the right path. These are all topics yet to be uncovered through this episode. The self-work is not to be neglected as long-term rewards tend to be deceiving in terms of being truthful to one's process. However, building habits based on short-term goals with small rewards can lead to a much more meaningful and successful work and, ultimately, life.

Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of MIND unplugged. You tuned in today for a fantastic episode about life and negotiation. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Mr Derek Gaunt; Derek is a lecturer, a coach and the author of Ego, Authority and Failure, which is an excellent book I have here by my side. Derek has a wealth of experience starting with 30 years in law enforcement out of which 20 years as a member, team leader and commander of hostage negotiation teams in the Washington DC area. He’s been instructing people all over the world on how to apply hostage negotiation tactics in their individual and business environments.

Today's episode is a very inspiring one; Derek shares with us his story behind the scenes and what got him into hostage negotiation and negotiation as a skill, part of his personal development. From learning how one can negotiate with oneself to applying negotiation techniques in the daily life.
Are they really negotiation techniques or are they simply just traits that we can learn and develop to enhance our lives and relationships in both personal and work environments?

In this episode we will be discussing this. In addition, a discussion on negotiation techniques of the Black Swan Group applied in linguistically diverse places, will also be part of the journey today.

Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of MIND unplugged. You tuned in today for a great episode about life, music and mystery. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Sarah Ramey also known as Wolf Larsen; Sarah is an author, and The author of The Lady’s Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness. Her book is based on her own story and her own dealing with severe and mysterious health struggles. She is a songwriter and has one solo album called Quiet at the Kitchen Door; this album, I can tell from my own way of experiencing it, it is an album that’s been my retreat for many years; if I had some downs and wasn’t feeling very well, this was the album to calm me down and bring me back up to the surface. The intimacy, the sensitivity of this album is simply beautiful. We all have to deal with every day struggles. In this episode, Sarah shares with us the challenges of her journey and her bold approach to life and work.

Today's episode is very special to me. Sarah will walk us through her journey on dealing with something mysterious that has been influencing her life for a long time now. In addition to that, this episode highlights an exchange of ideas and experiences of Eastern and Western medicine, making music, and being a songwriter and author. Last but not least, Sarah will share with us her ways of navigating through life, creating a sacred (if I may) creative space to grow and deal with everyday living.

Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of MIND unplugged.

You tuned in today for an inspiring episode about humor, paradox, and change. Today I have the pleasure of talking to Dan Millman also known as the creator and the author of the Way of The Peaceful Warrior. Dan is a former world champion athlete, Stanford University gymnastics coach, martial arts instructor, and Oberlin college professor. He has authored 18 books published in 29 languages and his book The Way of the Peaceful Warrior was adapted to a film in 2006.

Today's episode is about learning to live life to the fullest. It's about the way life moves us and exposes us to such different circumstances that aren't always pleasant but are part of The Way. We must learn to observe seeing life as a school, as a spiritual experiment where no one is the same and where self comparison has no importance or need. Comparison only shows what is either inferior or superior, and it represents tremendous disrespect to our own process and we then become victims of our own existence. Also, whether our lives are pre-determined or free will is the one who determines it, we are yet to find out in this episode.

Join Dan and I on an unforgettable journey on the streams of existence.

This eleventh-episode features our tenth guest speaker, Paavo Pylkkänen. Our guest today is joining us from Helsinki, Finland. Mr Pylkkänen is a philosopher of mind and a lecturer at the University of Helsinki and Skovde where he teaches theoretical philosophy. His life and passion have provided him with the opportunity to explore, learn and devote himself to a set of subjects that highly influence our ways of being. Mr Pylkkänen's interest in the philosophy of mind and the mind-body problem fused even further into building on David Bohm’s interpretations on the Hidden Variables theory of quantum mechanics.

In this episode, Mr Pylkkänen shares with us the connection between theoretical philosophy and quantum mechanics where he also talks about his work with David Bohm, as well as how he got to know Mr Bohm and many other brilliant minds, and pursue the path that even until today he passionately lives. Additionally, Mr Pylkkänen talks about his stories as a young individual where he did not have a clear direction yet his desires and inclinations carried him from music school to the school of economics and law, and ultimately to the school of philosophy. Only after discovering Jiddu Krishnamurti and meeting David Bohm, his life caught a different shape, a shape desired but unsure if ought to pursue.

In this episode, I have briefly covered a little bit about myself to get to know each other and share with you the purpose of this podcast. In addition to this episode, I have also prepared a blog post where you can get to know me even more, this time in writing.

The podcast will air three times a month on a 10-day basis, so please feel free to tune-in on Wednesday the 8th of Jul for our first episode. All episodes can be found on the website, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and soon on Google Podcasts.

Thanks for coming over, and I hope that each episode posted will inspire your growth!
