Timestamp

0:00-1:22: Introduction

1:23-7:43: Is leader or entrepreneur development an important process? If the process is important why is that so? If not, why not?

7:44-33:42: In 2019 a Harvard Business Review article by Moldoveanu and Narayandas noted there are three main reasons for the disjointed state of leadership development: (1) A gap in motivations whereby organisations invest in executive development for their own long-term good, but individuals participate in order to enhance their skills and advance their careers, and they don’t necessarily remain with the employers who’ve paid for their training. (2) The second is the gap between the skills that executive development programs build and those that firms require particularly the interpersonal skills essential to thriving in today’s flat, networked, increasingly collaborative organizations. Traditional providers bring deep expertise in teaching cognitive skills and measuring their development, but they are far less experienced in teaching people how to communicate and work with one another effectively. (3) The third reason is the skills transfer gap. Simply put, few executives seem to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their jobs and the farther removed the locus of learning is from the locus of application, the larger this gap becomes.

33:43-36:51: What’s your view of these gaps taking into account the impact of the pandemic?

36:52-42:47: In your experience, what does effective leader / entrepreneur look like?

42:48-48:43: What advice can you share to help develop leaders and/or entrepreneurs?

48:44-49:05: Concluding remarks

The Future of Leadership Development: Gaps in traditional executive education are creating room for approaches that are more tailored and democratic, Mihnea Moldoveanu and Das Narayandas (2019), Harvard Business Review:

The list was concerning but a reflection of the issues critical to leaders. Brenda identified the following issues: (1) uncertainty, (2) geo-political issues, (3) the Great Resignation, (4) both leader and team member burnout, and (5) leadership is becoming personal - leaders must engage with employees who are looking for work to meet their specific needs. Brenda connected these issues by arguing that leaders have no road map to help them engage with these issues.

Today's guest is Carmel Molloy, CEO and Co-Founder at NonProfit Alliance (NPA). You will get a clear understanding of Carmel's views on leadership in the way she defines it, 'True leadership is an alignment of personal values and lived purpose to make the world a better place. No matter how big or small that place is, it doesn't matter. It can be a small community, it can be a big world but harnessing your own strengths so that others want to be on the journey with you'. I particularly liked the process of aligning values and purpose - when these are not aligned, to what extent does this undermine the leadership process?

My guest this week is Mark McCrindle, the Founder and Principal at McCrindle Research. The primary focus off the podcast was to discuss the factors that have led to the ‘Great Resignation’. This is not why I reached to Mark, after reading an article where he used the term ‘Great Retention’ I wanted to know more about how these workplace phenomena interacted with leadership.

Mark discussed the great retention as being an alignment of culture, values and purpose and from a leader perspective, being intentional – that is, a triple bottom line framework that includes people, planet and profit. Among many critical insights, Mark outlined what our next generation of workers are looking for: (1) a role with purpose and meaning (2) a place where I can make a difference with my skills (3) social connection, (4) flexibility, (5) seeing the impact they could make.

So let me ask you – how much time and effort has your organisation placed in its human resource processes (HR) and policies like performance management?  Why does this even matter?  My guest on today’s podcast, Jonathan Mamaril, Principal and Director at NB Lawyers outlined the ‘why’ in the context of managing your business risks. To what extent has COVID-19 impacted HR processes in your businesses?  I, like most of you are probably over the impacts of COVID-19 but taking a view that its in the rear view mirror is potentially a critical mistake.  You’ll understand why in this podcast and my thanks to Jonathan for sharing his insights.

My guest today is Joe Ringer, the Founder and Managing Director Founder of Unitive. Our discussion was centered on leadership and communication and raised many issues including coaching. Jo made an interesting observation regarding a potential fear amongst leaders to act as coaches as there may be no clear understanding of the issues or mental health of team members. However, if someone has given permission to engage and communicate in this way, Jo argued that coaching can lead to an individual improving their performance but its core, coaching is predicated on good communication.

Leadership in the sporting context has been a regular theme discussed amongst leaders on this podcast. Today’s guest is Lisa Hasker, the Chief Executive Officer of Vicsport. Lisa posed some interesting questions in response to the nature versus nurture theme and well worth considering – (1) Have you been in situations where you’ve learned to be a leader? (2) Have you had leaders that have been role models for you? (3) Have you been in situations where you have had to cope with different stressors? I believe your life experience whether at work or outside the work context continually shape you as a leader.

My thanks to Kevin Bennett, the Queensland and New South Wales – Regional Facilitator of the Best Practice Network for his time and views on this thing called leadership.  I asked Kevin to share his views on leadership given his exposure to a range of industry sectors and of course leaders.  I posed a question - do we have fit for future leaders? He said leaders need to upskill themselves for industry sectors that may be disrupted for a number of reasons.  In some ways I think this incorporates an ability to embrace ambiguity and change.  The path of least resistance for leaders is an option that is no longer viable.

Dr Westover hosts the Human Capital Innovations (HCI) Podcast, well worth a listen with an amazing range of content regarding leadership.

Welcome back to the final Talking Leadership episode for 2020. A big thanks to Colin Lea who is a Partner at the Carey Group. The takeaway learning for me, not everyone wants to be a leader. Colin identified that in both the military and civilian contexts, many highly skilled individuals want to work in a technical / operational role and have no desire to progress to leadership roles. The ‘however’ that Colin points out is that people being people – our priorities can change and maybe a technical expert in your business wants to move into a leadership role but does not know how to go about it. A situation that leaders really need to be aware of in order to grow their teams and businesses.

This interview adds to the amazing insights provided in this series focusing on leadership in the Australian Military context. The process of hosting was made easy with the assistance of my co-host, Ben Deverson the Founder and Director at Lawganised. A lot more to come in this series in February 2021 and a huge thanks to Ben who will stay on as co-host.

Leadership and leader development in the hospitality sector has intrigued me and so I reached to a fellow podcaster who is the host of The Open Pantry Podcast.  Shaun de Vries has more than two decades of experience in the hospitality sector and is the Founder and Director of Open Pantry Consulting.

This podcast was an amazing insight into Shaun’s leadership pathway through a highly demanding industry. He made reference to leadership by example and that the leadership function is not a single person’s concern but that of all employees. I am sure you will enjoy this podcast as Shaun provides a detailed overview of his leadership experience.

As always, thank you for following the podcast. Please share on YouTube or subscribe to support the channel.

I would like to thank today’s podcast guest, Jennifer Luke.  She is the Divisional President (Queensland of the Career Development Association of Queensland, a Career Development Practitioner and Educator and the owner of Clear Outlook a career and workforce development consultancy.  Our conversation focused on measuring success from a leader’s perspective.  A key learning for me was when considering success, to think about the people around me not so much the process that led to success… whatever that might look like.

As always, thank you for following the podcast. Please share on YouTube or subscribe to support the channel.

Welcome back to part two of the podcast with our guest, Drew Horsell.

Today’s podcast confirms my own view of the value of speaking about leadership.  I would like to thank Drew Horsell, the Owner/Director at Horsell.  The podcast would not be what it is with the help of my co-host, Ben Deverson the Founder and Director of Lawganised.

Drew is a big believer in being open and honest in his dealing with stakeholders and holding the proper treatment of his staff as a paramount concern.  He also stated that he would rather lose a contract than maintain a business arrangement that is detrimental to his employees.  Drew also mentioned that aligning values and purpose sends a clear statement about what your organisation supports and the kind of leaders you are likely to encounter.

As always, thank you for following the podcast. Please share on YouTube or subscribe to support the channel.

Today’s guest is Dre McLaughlin the Director of Job Search Qld.  He is a career development expert, coach and podcaster.  It seems a common denominator amongst the leaders I have spoken with is to set a goal.  Dre is aiming to help kick start the careers of 100,000 people by the end of 2023.  I have met some very driven leaders in my time and Dre stands out amongst those I have met which peaks to another common leader characteristic, passion for the work you do. As always, thank you for following the podcast. Please share on YouTube or subscribe to support the channel.

Welcome back to talking Leadership. Today’s podcast guest provides amazing insights into this thing called leadership. I would like to thank Colin James, Co-Founder of the Colin James Method Pty Ltd, speaker, facilitator and coach. I would like to thank Colin for his eloquence in providing a context for leadership that is much more nuanced than it first appears. A few great take away quotes, “The real, exceptional leader, is the one that knows when to delegate and when to let go”.

My final take away statement from Colin, “It comes down to intent, do you want to lead – and if you want to lead you will find your space”. As always thank you for following the podcast. Please share on YouTube or subscribe to support the channel.

Today’s podcast guest is Dr Adam Smith the Co-Founder and Managing Director at Reef Ecologic.  I have asked and will continue to ask whether leaders are born or made.  After my discussion with Adam I am more convinced that leaders are made.  He also mentioned his passion for his work in the marine environment, so does the nature of your work shape the kind of leader you will become?  As always please share this podcast and thank you for listening.

Welcome back to part two of the podcast with our guest, Jonathan Clark.

To start, I apologise for the late posting.  Welcome to the third episode of leadership and the Australian military.  The podcast would not have been produced without the help of Ben Deverson my co-host, the Founder and Director of Lawganised.  Today’s guest is Jonathan Clark, Director at The Eighth Mile Consulting.  The conversation has been split into two podcast sessions so please do yourself a favour and settle in for what is an amazing leadership story and yet another reason to consider the Australian military as a career option.

Episode 3, Part 1 – What does ‘good’  leadership look like?  Jonathan asked this question and suggested he was well aware of what good is from his time in the military.  How many of us working in the civilian world really know what good leadership looks like?

Episode 3, Part 2 – Jonathan made the following statement, ‘vulnerability is not a weakness’.  Letting others you work with know you are human is only one part of developing a culture where leaders earn respect not demand it.

Please share these podcasts.  Jonathan has advice around the leadership topic well worth considering.  As always thank you for following the podcast and catch you all again next week.

Thanks again to Vicki for sharing her views on this thing called leadership and thank you for listening.

Welcome to the second episode in the new series focusing on leadership and the Australian military context.  Thank my co-host Ben Deverson, Founder and Director of Lawganised.  Today’s podcast guest is Dr Adrian McCallum an academic in the science and civil engineering field at the University of the Sunshine Coast, a specialist recruiter for the Australian Army and consultant.

Adrian asked the following: what is leadership?  To constantly communicate,  keeping people in the loop, understanding how people think and relationship building and influencing others.  Ben asked a question regarding Adrian’s work in extreme environments which led to a discussion around crisis management.  The ability to step back assess the situation and seek views from others seems counter to a typical panicked reaction.  I hope you enjoy this podcast and a lot more content on the way.

Today’s podcast guest is Tynan Coles the Chief Executive Officer of Soltaro.  What I took away from my discussion with Tynan is that leadership is, in many respects about how you engage with people within or outside of your organisation.

I asked Tynan about his key list of critical leadership capabilities and not surprisingly he said each team member is motivated by different things, you need to adapt your leadership style to people and your market, staff have different personal and work goals and keeping staff motivated is a pathway to success.  I hope you enjoy the podcast and as always more content on the way.

A fantastic first podcast and a big thanks from me to my co-host Ben Deverson, Founder and Director at Lawganised.

Today’s podcast guest is David Neal, Director at The Eighth Mile Consulting.  David began discussing a link between self-awareness and selflessness he then made the following statement, ‘Leadership is not about you’… let that sink in for a moment and added, ‘a lot of people don’t know what good [leadership] looks like’, again let that sink in.

We have a two-part set of podcasts, well worth a listen and as always thanks for your support and feedback.

Welcome back to the podcast.  If you can set aside some time this podcast is well worth the time if you are contemplating a career as an entrepreneur.  I asked both Sarah and Matthew what drove them to entrepreneurship with both mentioning family as the basis of their pathways.

Sarah and Matthew provide a mini-master class in why entrepreneurship is a viable option for Australians considering an alternative to working for someone else’s business.  Sarah reminded me in simple way what business is about – ‘business is a people game’.

Today’s podcast guest has an extremely interesting background working across the political, corporate and start-up spaces.  Mark Gustowski was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia. I asked Mark about measure of success he found to be critical and he was very focused on the fit of employees to the business environment in which they work. He noted that leader success for him is developing functional and cohesive teams.

I hope you enjoy the podcast and as always much more content on the way.

Ben Deverson is the Founder and Director of Lawganised.  His business focus is the business management field across legal firms.  As usual I began the interview by asking Ben what put him on the leadership path and like many former guests he has a military background.  A particularly telling part of our discussion was that he mentioned being a servant leader.

A brilliant and follower focused question posed by Ben was - ‘What can I do today to make your life easier’. As always thank you for following the podcast and more great content on the way.

I am proud to present another Australian Entrepreneurs podcast. Today’s guest is Scott Douglas, the Start up Founder and Principal Designer at Green Lab Futures and a lecturer at Federation University Australia. Scott was introspective and candid about his pathway to entrepreneurship.  Scott discussed his entrepreneurial pathway as being shaped by a sense of service to others and a deep respect for community.

He outlined the stumbling blocks facing entrepreneurs and argued that there is a shift in the traditional view of leadership to forms of leadership that are shared within organisations. Well worth a listen and again I thank Scott and all of the leaders and entrepreneurs that have given their time to speak with me about leadership.

The fifth podcast in the Global Edition series of the podcast.  Today’s podcast guest is David Shapiro CEO, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership.  David provided amazing insights from his travels as a leader and in particular I asked him what he considered to be the key leader capabilities.  His response – communication, authenticity and discipline or as you’ll hear in the podcast listening, being open and transparent and being focused.

David also provides an interesting perspective around the function of a leader and that is, in his view, to be of service to others.  I hope you tune in and enjoy the leadership pathway David shares and as always stay safe and more great content around this thing called leadership.

As always hope you enjoy the wisdom imparted by my podcast guest. Today’s guest is Yasmin Grigaliunas the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the World's Biggest Garage Sale.  I was inspired by her story and how she came to be in the leadership / entrepreneur space.

A few elements stood out for me during the discussion.  The first being that leaders have a responsibility to do more for their communities.  I took this to mean that leaders have influence and by the nature of their roles they can get things done and in her case, Yasmin outlines the passion for her business which she states is about people, planet and purpose or put another way - building people, impacting communities and encouraging conscious consumption.  As always I hope you enjoy the podcasts today and I hope you are all keeping safe and well through COVID-19.

Welcome back to the Talking Leadership podcast.  Today’s episode is focused on a discussion around self-leadership and emotional intelligence expertly defined by Dr Michelle Bakjac.  Empathy has been a common theme amongst the podcasts and Michelle defined empathy as understanding (1) what makes you tick? (2) your values and (3) your beliefs.  Being empathic and an awareness of your values and beliefs will lead to better self-leadership and better organisational leadership.

I hope you enjoy this podcast and as always stay tuned for more discussion around this thing called leadership.

Today’s podcast guest is Leanne Hodyl, the Managing Director at Hodyl & Co.  During the podcast she identified as a leader and introvert.  At the time of recording this did not immediately resonate with me.  Once it did sink it I started to think about how leaders engage with the world of work as either an introvert or extrovert.  Leaders will fall somewhere on the spectrum and as Leanne noted it may impact how you conduct yourself as a leader.

I hope you enjoy this podcast and be sure to access the leadership stories shared by Australian and international leaders.

I have known today’s guest for almost 35 years and I am pleased he agreed to speak on key elements of his leadership experience.  Nick Dore is the Managing Principal of Fisher Dore Lawyers a highly respected criminal legal firm.

A key message I took away from this podcast was Nick’s focus on consistency, assertiveness and transparency when dealing with clients which also applies as part of his leadership approach.  These leader attributes are referenced throughout the podcast and give you a very clear view of the leader and professional you are dealing with.  I hope you enjoy this podcast, stay as safe as you can in this COVID-19 period and I’ll catch you all on the next podcast.

I have worked across all three levels of government in Australia – Federal, State and Local. I am a strong supporter of Local Government and as a result many podcast guests have worked for or continue to work in the sector. Today’s guest, Mark Ogston is the Director and Principal at Leading Roles a Local Government recruitment business.

The discussion provided some interesting insights into the ‘why’ underlying Mark’s pathway as an entrepreneur. What resonated for me was his drive to determine his own agenda within his business based on his values in addition to aligning with the purpose of Local Governments to develop and enhance local communities.

More episodes of Talking Leadership are heading your way and again thank you for listening.

Welcome to the second episode of Talking Leadership’s global edition series of podcasts.  I was fortunate to speak with Piyush Patel the founder of Digital Tutors about his journey as an entrepreneur.  Piyush provided his experiences on his road to being an entrepreneur and outlined the importance of understanding your purpose.

He posed some interesting questions – Is your purpose about making money? Or is it about changing an industry?  Or is it about creating opportunities for others?  Money was definitely not Piyush’s motivator and what I found his focus on valuing the contributions of his family, team and colleagues is that in the end, success will come from a purpose that is positive and informed by experience.

As always I hope you enjoy the podcast and for those outside Australia I am always looking for the next conversation around the leadership topic. If you are interested in speaking with me please email at TLbyEricPerze@gmail.com.

Dr Adrian McCallum is a senior lecturer in the School of Science and Engineering and also holds a position as Manager - Defence Industry Engagement at the University of the Sunshine Coast.  I'll open this podcast description by focusing on elements of Adrian's response to the question of what he might say to a younger version of himself about being an effective leader including - (1) a need to listen more than speak, (b) be less hasty in decision-making, (3) grasp opportunities and (4) empower others.  Adrian's background as an officer in the Australian provides an interesting context in which he developed his leadership skills.

As always I hope you enjoy the podcast and I thank Adrian and all my previous podcast guests for their fantastic feedback regarding their leadership journeys.

I have nothing but respect for the teaching profession as I have family and friends that are teachers which has given me a different perspective on what teachers do.  I enjoyed speaking with Courtney Bailey, agriculture teacher, regarding her views on leadership as an emerging leader.

Courtney's response regarding whether leaders are born or made was brilliant - anyone can become a leader and that people have a capacity to learn, change and grow.  Well worth a listen from an emerging leader in the teaching profession.

The third podcast in the Australian Entrepreneurs series which features the thoughts regarding entrepreneurship from Ben May, the Managing Director of The Code Company.  I have had the privilege of seeing the growth of his business ventures of the last 10 years.  Two things stood out in our discussion – the first and most critical is finding a way to balance running the business and life outside work and secondly, that a part of Ben’s learning strategy is to engage with people with skill sets different to his and to adapt what he can to suit his needs.

So if you are an emerging entrepreneur please invest some time to listen to Ben’s perspectives.  As always thanks again for listening and I hope you enjoy this podcast.
