Shadow Politics with US Senator Michael D Brown: Recent Episodes

BBS Radio, BBS Network Inc.

Shadow Politics is a grass roots talk show giving a voice to the voiceless. For more than 200 years the people of the Nation's Capital have ironically been excluded from the national political conversation. With no voting member of either house of Congress, Washingtonians have lacked the representation they need to be equal and to have their voices heard. Shadow Politics will provide a platform for them, as well as the millions of others nationwide who feel politically disenfranchised and disconnected, to be included in a national dialog.

We need to start a new conversation in America, one that is more inclusive and diverse and one that will lead our great nation forward to meet the challenges of the 21st century. At Shadow Politics, we hope to get this conversation started by bringing Americans together to talk about issues important to them. We look forward to having you be part of the discussion so call in and join the conversation. America is calling and we're listening… Shadow Politics is about America hearing what you have to say. It's your chance to talk to an elected official who has spent more than 30 years in Washington politics. We believe that if we start a dialog and others add their voices we will create a chorus. Even if those other politicians in Washington don't hear you — Senator Brown will. He's on a mission to listen to what America has to say and use it to start a productive dialog to make our democracy stronger and more inclusive. If we are all part of the solution we can solve any problem.

UNIONS RISE AGAIN: Labor collectives vs. Amazon

America's second-largest employer fought hard against unionization efforts at its Staten Island, NY, warehouse. But "team members" there voted to unionize – an example of younger employees' interest in improved working conditions, and the increasing fortunes of labor collectives, despite corporations' union-busting tactics. America on the Fourth, Where Do we stand? CONGRESSWOMAN ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON

The District of Columbia's Warrior on the Hill

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) speaks on Capitol Hill on July 23, 2020, in Washington, DC, about a bill which defied longstanding precedents in treating the District of Columbia as a territory instead of as a state for federal funding under the $150 billion coronavirus relief fund for states and territories, depriving DC of an estimated $750 million.

Eleanor Holmes Norton is a lawyer, a mother, a writer and a fighter.

And she's the District of Columbia's fiercest — and most effective — advocate.

Now in her 15th term, Congresswoman Norton (D-DC) has been named one of the 100 most important American women and one of the most powerful women in Washington. The congresswoman's work for full democracy for the people of the District of Columbia continues her lifelong struggle for universal human and civil rights.

Congresswoman Norton's many accomplishments include recommending federal judges, the US Attorney and other significant federal law enforcement positions for the District. Norton secures funding for the District of Columbia Tuition Assistance Grant Program, which helps pay for DC students to attend any public college or university in the United States and a unique $5,000 DC homebuyer tax credit, which sharply increased homeownership in the District. These are just a few of her many achievements.

MESSAGE FROM UNITED STATES SENATOR MICHAEL D. BROWN

On the eve of our 246th Independence Day, Marília and I will speak with DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton about what the Fourth of July holiday means to her, the Constitution of the United States, as well as the recent Supreme Court decisions supporting the open carry of guns, the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the explosive hearings of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.

Guest, Dr JON GRINSPAN, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution

Jon Grinspan is the curator in the Division of Political and Military History at the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution.

Jon Grinspan's new book, THE AGE OF ACRIMONY: How Americans Fought to Fix Their Democracy, 1865-1915, argues that the democracy we inherited from the 20th century was really an outlier, created to fix our politics the last time they broke. In the late 1800s Americans feared that the republic was dying, torn apart by vibrant but violent partisan political campaigns. This era was only ended by a revolution in political restraint around 1900. Over time we came to consider that civility normal, and view our current divisions as unprecedented, but really we have deep history of struggling to calm an ugly system.

Grinspan studies the deep history of American democracy, especially the wild partisan campaigns of the 1800s. At the same time, Jon collects objects from current protests, conventions, elections and riots for the Smithsonian, to try to preserve our own heated moment for generations to come. Together, it involves a bit of time-traveling, explaining the past to the present and the present to the future.

His first book, THE VIRGIN VOTE: How Young Americans Made Democracy Social, Politics Personal and Voting Popular in the Nineteenth Century, uncovered the forgotten history of the youth vote, to show that young men and women were once the most engaged, and sought after, demographic in American politics.

MESSAGE FROM UNITED STATES SENATOR MICHAEL D. BROWN

Author Jon Grinspan will speak with Marília and I about political acrimony in America. What does yesterday tell us about today? Is the 2021 insurrection somehow connected to the past? We'll talk about this and what our future may be going forward. Jan. 6th was not the first attack on the U.S. Capitol, but will it be the last?

What, exactly, is history teaching us in this moment in time?

Marília and I will speak with the former DC Attorney General Irv Nathan about the recent confirmation of Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States.

In addition, we will discuss Nathan's recent opinion piece in The Washington Post, "D.C. should focus on expanded home rule before statehood." We will also speak with Nathan about rising crime in the District of Columbia.

Tune in for this important interview. Be part of the conversation by calling into the LIVE show with your comments and questions at (888) 627-6008.

IRVIN B. NATHAN, Esq.

A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Irvin Nathan co-chaired — along with recently confirmed Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson — a task force composed of some of the city's top litigators and jurists, examining "Jury Service in the 21st Century" sponsored by the prestigious Council for Court Excellence, in an effort to improve jury service in the age of the internet and social media.

Nathan was appointed Attorney General for the District of Columbia in 2011. In this role, he supervised all civil litigation and appeals on behalf of the city, as well as juvenile and misdemeanor prosecutions. He announced his resignation the day after the November 2014 General Election, in which DC voters chose Karl Racine as the first elected Attorney General.

Before joining the Office of the Attorney General, Nathan served as General Counsel of the United States House of Representatives. He has also served as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General at the US Department of Justice and Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Enforcement in the Criminal Division, Senior Counsel for the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee and Special Minority Counsel for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

For more than 30 years, Nathan practiced law at Arnold & Porter LLP representing clients in criminal and complex civil litigations, including securities fraud, civil RICO and corporate compliance matters. When he returned to A&P, he was a part of several practice groups — including Attorney Liability, Business Litigation, Legislative and Public Policy and White-Collar Defense.

HELD OVER FROM LAST WEEK... The Rise of White Christian Nationalism DR. SAMUEL PERRY

Award-Winning Scholar, Sociology Professor, Author, Contributor to the Report to the January 6th Select Committee

DR. SAMUEL L. PERRY

An award-winning scholar and teacher, Dr. Samuel L. Perry is among the nation’s leading experts on conservative Christianity and American politics, race, sexuality and families.

Along with numerous articles published in leading academic journals, Dr. Perry has also authored or co-authored four books, including GROWING GOD'S FAMILY: The Global Orphan Care Movement and the Limits of Evangelical Activism (NYU, 2017), ADDICTED TO LUST: Pornography in the Lives of Conservative Protestants (Oxford, 2019), TAKING AMERICA BACK FOR GOD:  Christian Nationalism in the United States (Oxford, 2020; co-authored with Andrew Whitehead) and the forthcoming THE FLAG + THE CROSS: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy (Oxford, 2022; co-authored with Philip Gorski).

Dr. Perry is currently working on a book about how the scientific study of religion benefits all of society and another book about how culture wars and consumer markets shape English bibles.

Dr. Perry is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma.

A bracing examination of a force that imperils American democracy

Most Americans were shocked by the violence they witnessed at the nation's Capitol Building on January 6th. And many were bewildered by the images displayed by the insurrectionists: a wooden cross and wooden gallows; "Jesus saves" and "Don't Tread on Me;" Christian flags and Confederate Flags; even a prayer in Jesus' name after storming the Senate chamber. Where some saw a confusing jumble, Philip Gorski and Samuel Perry saw a familiar ideology: white Christian nationalism.

White Christian nationalism motivates the anti-democratic, authoritarian and violent impulses on display in our current political moment. The future of American democracy, Gorski and Perry argue, will depend on whether a broad spectrum of Americans — stretching from democratic socialists to classical liberals — can unite in a popular front to combat the threat to liberal democracy posed by white Christian nationalism.

María Sánchez

to Discuss legislation before the DC Council on Monday, February 28th

Guest, MARÍA VIOLA SÁNCHEZ, PhD, MA

Founder, STOP THE CUT! Eradicating Female Genital Mutilation

My former cohost, María Sánchez, is coming back to the show to talk about important legislation before the Council's Judiciary & Public Safety Committee. The District of Columbia is one of 10 jurisdictions in the United States that does not have a prohibition against female genital mutilation (FGM) – a practice that affects 200 million girls and women worldwide. This legislation also affects females in the District and María will shed light on the importance of passing this bill.

Sánchez holds a PhD in Psychology (Fielding Graduate University, 2021) a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology (Pepperdine University, 2017) and a master’s degree in Media Psychology (Fielding Graduate University, 2019). María was elected to Fielding Graduate University’s Board of Trustees in 2019, as a full voting member and still serves, and she served as Fielding’s Student Body President (2018–2020). María’s doctoral dissertation is entitled, “USING THE BYSTANDER INTERVENTION MODEL TO IMPROVE EFFORTS TO REDUCE FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.”

María has become an activist and founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to help with the worldwide eradication of female genital mutilation (FGM).

STOP THE CUT!

At least four million girls worldwide are at risk each year of undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) – with most girls cut before the age of 15.

Significant progress has been made in eliminating this harmful practice, but more is needed – and fast – if we are to end it once and for all.

Guest, Congressman Jim Moran

JAMES P. MORAN

Former Congressman from Virginia's 8th district

During his time in Congress, Rep. Jim Moran was a leader on the Appropriations Committee, bringing billions in economic investment to Northern Virginia to assist underserved communities – building up the region’s transportation infrastructure and creating thousands of jobs, particularly in the defense and intelligence communities.

Moran played a major role in funding the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, the Metro to Dulles, the widening of Route 1 to Fort Belvoir and the construction of numerous local road, bridge, environmental and public transit projects. The front page of the Washington Post cited the fact that “companies based in Representative James P. Moran’s district in Northern Virginia reaped $43 billion in federal contracts – roughly as much as the entire state of Texas.”

Moran was an outspoken opponent of the Iraq War from the very beginning and helped lead opposition in committee and on the floor to what he deemed a war of choice whose outcome would not strengthen American security, but rather align Iraq with the Shiite dominated Iran.

In 1996, he co-founded the New Democrats – one of the largest caucuses in the House. Through the New Dems, he has supported free and fair trade and has been active on a range of issues promoting a stronger, center-left vision for our nation’s economy.

Since 2016, Moran has served as the Senior Legislative Advisor at McDermott, Will and Emery. In March 2016, he was appointed Professor of Practice in the School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech.

DARYLE LAMONT JENKINS

Executive Director of One People's Project, an anti-racist organization

Recent movies such as Netflix's “ALT-RIGHT: Age of Rage” and A24's Academy Award-nominated short film “Skin” show some of the work done by One People's Project founder Daryle Lamont Jenkins.

Daryle became influenced by the civil rights movement as a young man. Reading about “enemies” of the movement made him wonder what happened to the KKK members. Where are they now? Are they leading normal lives and no one knows?

One People’s Project has played an instrumental role in causing the collapse of hate groups throughout the country. Daryle’s efforts have exposed those involved in hate politics nationwide. People trying to escape white power circles find support there, as well.

Idavox, the media outlet of One People’s Project, keeps us up to date with the latest reports from around the country on hate groups. One People’s Project aims to form a larger community of activists dedicated to anti-fascist work.

Daryle has appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show, The Montel Williams Show, 20/20, AM Joy on MSNBC and was a co-producer of the short film “Skin.”
