In Part 4 of Echoes of Tyranny, we continue with two of the greatest dystopian novels and ask a pressing question: What happens to us when individuality becomes the enemy? First, we plunge into the world of Orwell's 1984, where Winston Smith's every thought is a potential crime. It's not just what you do—it's what you think that can get you erased from existence. Orwell doesn't shy away from the grim reality that in a society obsessed with control, even the smallest act of rebellion is a declaration of war. Winston's quiet, internal struggle against the suffocating force of Big Brother reminds us that freedom often starts—and ends—in the mind.

But Orwell doesn't have the dystopian monopoly. Enter Huxley's Brave New World, where suppression looks a lot friendlier. In this world, it's not thoughtcrime that's the problem—it's the fact that no one cares enough to think at all. Here, individuality isn't squashed by fear; it's smothered by pleasure. The society runs like a well-oiled machine, not because people are scared, but because they're too content to ask questions. And why would they? Life is perfect—except for the fact that no one is truly alive.

In this chemically numbed utopia, ambition, curiosity, and the messy unpredictability of human nature have all been sacrificed on the altar of stability. It's happiness by design, but happiness with an asterisk.

Now, let's bring it back to our world. How does the tension between individual freedom and societal expectations play out today? From mass surveillance to social media echo chambers, where we spend more time curating our personas than cultivating our real selves, the lines between freedom and conformity have never been blurrier.

This episode digs deep into the costs of fitting in, the subtle ways society keeps us in check, and why the battle for individuality is still being fought—whether we realize it or not. So, if you've ever felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole, this episode's for you. It's time to ask yourself: Are you truly free or just following the script?

In this episode, we dive headfirst into the murky waters of truth and reality, exploring how they can be bent, twisted, and outright manipulated. Drawing from two of the most influential dystopian novels—1984 and Brave New World—we'll break down the tactics used by totalitarian regimes to control not only information but the very perception of reality itself.

We start with George Orwell's 1984, where language becomes a weapon of control. Concepts like Newspeak, Doublethink, and the Ministry of Truth aren't just sci-fi nightmares; they're fundamental strategies to manipulate how people think, speak, and live. The scary part? The more you limit words, the less you can think. This isn't just fiction in a novel, but reality.

Goodbye free thought, hello mind control.

Next, we shift to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, where reality is shaped through pleasure, conditioning, and genetic engineering, not brute force. Hypnopaedia drills shallow values into minds, keeping everyone happy, distracted, and obedient. Conditioning ensures people "like" their roles without ever questioning them.

But the most striking part is comparing these fictional realities to our world today. From fake news to information bubbles, the manipulation of truth isn't just a literary theme—it's playing out on our screens every day. Whether it's social media algorithms feeding us what we want to hear or governments and corporations twisting facts, controlling the narrative has never been easier—or scarier.

Tune in as we explore the terrifying parallels between these dystopian worlds and our present-day struggles with truth, reality, and the fine line between the two. Can we still trust what we see? Or has reality become just another tool to be controlled?

In the second episode of the 'Echoes of Tyranny' series, we delve into the heart of dystopian societies, where the grip of control reaches every corner of life. This isn't just a discussion of 1984's Big Brother or Brave New World's soma-soaked utopia—it's a comparative literary analysis of how these dystopian visions have eerie parallels in today's Western world.

We'll explore the suffocating presence of totalitarianism in Orwell's 1984, where constant surveillance, fear, and repression are tools of dominance. Then, we shift to Huxley's Brave New World, a society controlled through pleasure, distraction, and consumerism, where control feels like freedom—until it's not.

But dystopian literature isn't just fiction anymore. Drawing real-world connections, we'll analyze the modern implications of these works, from pervasive surveillance technologies to the seductive lull of social media and consumer culture. Are we living Orwell's nightmare or Huxley's dream? Or a bit of both?

Join us as we break down how these literary masterpieces echo through today's society, revealing how control can come from fear, pleasure, or the allure of distraction.

Have you ever wondered why a government, a system of institutions specifically designed to solve problems, often preserves and worsens the problems they are supposed to solve?

Buckle up as we dive into a lively discussion unraveling the Shirky Principle, which suggests governments are more prone to protect problems than solve them. We will break down a hilarious example involving the case of an Ontario-based carpooling site, PickUpPal.com, which was forced to shut down by the Canadian government not because it failed but because it was too efficient!

We will dissect the costly and often inefficient mechanisms of our government. Examples abound of how our government throws billions of dollars at problems that are never solved and often create worse problems in the process.

We will call out our dear politicians; however, it isn't malice or evil. Sometimes, it is mere stupidity how our politicians and bureaucrats go about solving problems. Brace yourselves as we scrutinize the colossal amount of funds funneled into sectors like the war on drugs, education, the military, and pandemic relief, with little to no palpable results. They simultaneously pledged billions to Israel for war, and Palestine for aid is called into question as we ponder who the real beneficiaries of this funding are.

Closing the episode, we scrutinize the deteriorating trust of the public in their government to solve problems and their motives in taking on issues.

It's a stark reality that politicians from both ends of the spectrum, the Democrats and the Republicans, often create problems only to present themselves as the solution.

Can we really hope for change when the same forces that created the problems continue to wield control and claim to be the solutions?

This episode promises to push you out of your comfort zone, compelling you to question the status quo and critically evaluate government actions.

It's not a secret that higher education and the academic elites far too often do not serve the nation effectively.

The PhD is especially failing society in countless ways. More specifically, this podcast focuses on our philosophers and great thinkers.

I'm not interested in exploring fields such as educational leadership/administration or any other silly 21st-century doctorate fields made up by administrators and self-serving faculty committees to put students in debt so they can have "a title" in this podcast. The explosion of doctorate "degree specialties" is a topic for another day.

But our Doctors of Philosophy are committing relevancy suicide. We discuss the role philosophers should play in today's complex world. The big thinkers need to stop quibbling over dead philosophers, building CVs, and publishing in journals that nobody will ever read. The great minds in our universities can bridge the gap between abstract theories and solve real-world problems if only they would step into this role with the same vigor they used to earn their degrees or publish to get tenure.

We delve deep into why philosophers need to step up, engage with the public, and tackle the critical issues of our time. From critical thinking and problem-solving to effective communication, philosophers possess unique skills that can illuminate our path forward if they only step out of their tiny world of academia.

It's time to call out academia, specifically the PhDs, so they can wake up before society decides they serve no purpose and discard them.

The world is in a state of chaos, and one of the main reasons is the loss of a unifying system of justice and morality. It can be argued that long before the flowering of democracy and the idea of freedom sprung to life in the West, Thomas Aquinas' Natural Law Theory laid the foundation. However, this foundation is eroding in our post-modern era.

Aquinas believed there was an immutable natural order to the world and everything in it. This natural order unified all people. Furthermore, he argued that certain moral principles were inherent in this natural order and were accessible to reason. In other words, anyone could discover natural law through rational inquiry.

But today, the natural law theory is being eroded by the waves of post-modern thought crashing against Aquinas's traditional philosophical and theological views. Instead, we live in a world where morality is relative, and individual rights are constantly redefined. Unfortunately, this has led to a world where justice is often arbitrary, and people are left grasping to understand the rules of the game.

Join me as I deep dive into Thomas Aquinas, his life, theories, and specifically the Natural Law Theory, and where society is and potentially where it will go if we don't carefully evaluate our trajectory in America today.

TikTok, a seductive digital vortex, has been a source of amusement for many and terror for others. The app's algorithmic power to draw in users, particularly the impressionable young, has been a cause for deep concern as it exposes them to harmful and inappropriate content.

From sexually explicit dances to harmful challenges, TikTok has created a breeding ground for toxic and hazardous trends. In addition, the app's blatant disregard for user privacy and data protection has led to several alarming breaches, putting personal information at risk. TikTok may seem like harmless fun, but beneath the surface lurks a danger that can cause irreparable damage to its users' mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Yet, the most dangerous characteristic is Chinese ownership of ByteDance, the parent company of Tik Tok. Due to Chinese ownership, BytDance must, when asked by the Communist Party of China, provide all data at any time requested, putting the data of over 140 million Americans at risk.

On the surface, a ban on Tik Tok in America should happen for national security. But is this true? Is a ban really such an obvious eventuality?

For every decision, there is the potential for unintended consequences. At stake in the debate over banning Tik Tok is a cornerstone of western democracies for over 200 years--freedom of speech.

Safety from foreign adversaries comes with a cost to every single American whenever the government steps in to restrict or deny anything through legislation. In this case, the right of individuals to express their opinions and ideas without fear of persecution or retribution is at stake.

Whether or not to limit free speech with a Tik Tok ban is contentious, with proponents on both sides arguing fiercely for their stance. Ultimately, it is up to society, and you, to decide on the delicate balance between preserving the right to free speech while ensuring that it does not lead to harm or pose a national security threat.

In this episode, we explore Tik Tok, the limits of personal freedom, and the RESTRICT Act, which would potentially ban Tik Tok and other bad actors across our digital landscape.

However, to say the RESTRICT Act goes far beyond banning Tik Tok is a grand understatement. Government overreach is a descriptor that aptly describes this Act, and all Americans should understand the details behind the headlines spouted by politicians in 30-second sound bytes.

For an atheist, faith seems to be an impossibility. For a practitioner of Christianity or any religion for that matter, it is hard to maintain faith. But why?

We live in a superficial world. In many ways, the religious institutions of the west mirror this superficiality. It has created lukewarm Christians—the Christmas and Easter-type practitioners of Christianity are a prime example. All religions appear to be facing similar problems.

A deep reverence for the immutable power of God is replaced with a mechanical and quasi-robotic going through the motions at best. Or, at worst, charlatans and deviants take advantage of their congressions sexually or monetarily. Atheists refuse even to consider anything from religious institutions.

To say faith is in trouble is an understatement.

In the middle of the extremes are a group of pastors and priests with self-righteousness, judgemental, and hypocritical lifestyles, causing an entire generation of young adults to relinquish their faith. They see the actions and attitudes of the devout and simply don’t want to be a part of it.

The proof is irrefutable, and Gen Z (aka the Zoomers), our youngest generation, is the least religious generation yet, with a whopping 34% entirely unaffiliated with any church or religion. (1)

Our modern calamity in the death of faith, in many ways, could be reversed or at least minimized by understanding and implementing the wisdom from the great mystical traditions of the Christian church.

In this episode, we evaluate the fantastical and metaphysical when mystics in the Christian tradition left the baby pool of spirituality and dove into the deep water of Christianity to emerge with insights and ideas for revival at the personal and institutional levels. We will evaluate their teaching and incredible stories of other-worldly experiences.

There is a hunger by so many for profound and meaningful messages of hope, love, and community that requires a perspective closer to the medieval mystics than the mega-church pastor with polished white teeth and a 10,000-seat church with rock music playing in the background.

This episode helps shine a light on why humanity is losing faith in religion and those metaphysical aspects of religion beyond the typical culprits of science and materialism.

A profound yearning for more is still embedded inside the psyche of us all. The medieval mystics can illuminate ways to tap into it.

We have all been there—bad decisions. Making bad decisions triggers negative consequences, such as financial loss, relationship damage, or missed opportunities. As we go through life and accumulate lousy decision after lousy decision, the baggage we carry around gets heavy—embarrassment, regret, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, and even fear that can paralyze us from stepping out of our comfort zone emerge.

We really only have two choices. Make bad mistakes, curl up in a ball, and give up. Or, we can challenge ourselves to leave the past in the past and have the discipline and determination to tap into our minds and learn to make better decisions. I choose the latter, and I hope you do too.

This episode explores a three-step process to avoid bad decisions and hopefully make high-quality decisions. We will get through analyzing a medieval intellectual and theologian that lived a life of high drama, bitter confrontations, and more than his share of bad decisions. From these very difficult life experiences, he grew exponentially and became one of the most respected and influential figures of the medieval era.

His name is Peter Abelard, and his view on sin, thinking, individualism, and personal responsibility was centuries ahead of the traditional mindset of the time. As we always do, we will attempt to connect the dots from a set of wisdom literature and philosophy to the postmodern world we live in today.

I hope you will listen in and study as we explore Peter Abelard and how to make more effective decisions in life.

A recent YouGov survey found that only 30% of Americans overall believe in the American dream and see it as very or somewhat attainable for themselves. It is cliche now to say the American Dream is dead. You can read innumerable articles on the topic.

The surface reasons for the death of the American Dream are obvious, too—rocketing inflation, student loan debt, housing costs, medical costs, income inequality, and endless wars are apparent culprits.

But what if the American Dream wasn’t just an illusion that emerged in the 1930s, but rather the concept is even more sinister? What if the American Dream was designed to enslave, not elevate, and provide a lifetime of happiness?

Could it be that the American Dream, as conceived during the Industrial Revolution, was the wrong dream, to begin with?

In fact, it could be argued that the American Dream is a nightmare that everyone, ultimately, is guaranteed to fail.

In many ways, this idea is like going to Las Vegas to gamble and expecting to get back on your plane for home with a healthy bag full of money. It rarely happens.

It is time to look at the American Dream differently. In this episode, we study the life and teaching of St. Augustine. We will connect the dots of his philosophy and theology from the 4th century CE to the American Dream.

In our wisdom literature of the week, we will review The Confessions and City of God and St. Augustine’s doctrine of why the materialistic strivings of humankind, such as the American Dream, are doomed to fail every time.

We all need to reimagine a new dream, a more concrete dream, that can lead us to a life of purpose and fulfillment. St. Augustine will be our guide on this journey.

The reasons for our current discontent and disillusionment with life in our post-modern world will become apparent by looking back at the teaching of this great and influential teacher.

Examples are everywhere—social media, political soundbites, and cable TV demonstrate that ignorance is trending globally. We have all seen it. It is scary to watch.

Politicians boast, “I’m not a scientist,” or that people are “sick of the so-called experts.” Rather than expertise, lack of experience is explained as a positive thing, better than any credential. Healthy skepticism is important—but denying basic facts of the obvious sort is dangerous and breeds extremism.

In this climate, misinformation or fake news is on the rise, and flagrant lies by those in positions of authority are accepted and spread without question by both sides of the ideological divide- these lies shape beliefs, foster mistrust, and breed anger among the population.

The irony is that although we live in the information age, we do not appear well-informed at the minimum, or at worst, society is becoming downright ignorant.

For all the benefits the information age has given to society, it surely has some unintended negative consequences. But there is a solution to combatting society's rising tide of ignorance.

Ignorance is dangerous. When we lack knowledge or understanding but, with arrogance and bluster, claim to possess knowledge, bad things happen—division happens. Evil happens.

In this podcast, we look back to a great theologian, philosopher, medical doctor and writer for a clear answer to combat ignorance in any era. His wisdom transcends generations, and we should all consider his teachings. His name is Moses Maimonides.

Join me for a deep dive into his life, works, and practical knowledge we can all use to become more intelligent and wise in our lives.

Just twenty-two percent of the youngest adults describe themselves as Protestant – a more than fifty percent decline from the 1950s and 60s. A cataclysmic decline if things do not change.

Gen Z is the most likely generation yet to say they don’t believe in God. They are also the least religiously affiliated and the least likely to attend church.

Meantime, their rates of depression and anxiety are soaring. The Centers for Disease Control recently published a report stating that “almost 60% of female students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness during the past year, and nearly 25% made a suicide plan.”

This is a stunning collapse. Any way a Christian may slice it, the current theology and institution are not working. Period.

In this episode, we contrast maybe the most corrosive element of Christianity—prosperity gospel preachers against some very stoic and hardcore followers of Christian theology often referred to as the desert fathers and mothers. What a stark contrast and the disparity shines a bright light on the differences between a postmodern world of ease versus a life of pain, suffering, and ultimately one of deep fulfillment outside the umbrella of materialism.

In this podcast, we primarily focus on St. Anthony, an incredible individual who shunned all material and personal wealth and fame for a life in the deep, mystical desert, hoping to live out his best life as close to the teachings of Christ as possible.

Whether you are a Christian, Jew, or of any faith, the hard-fought lessons learned by the desert fathers and mothers illuminate shortcomings in our lives that we can work on to become a better version of ourselves.

There is no easy way to slice it; religion is a challenging topic. This week we take on one of the most influential spiritual leaders to ever walk the planet earth and, arguably, one of the most influential people in the history of the world. That person is Jesus Christ.

In this episode, we discuss the person, the history, and most importantly, the wisdom to live life to the fullest. If you think this is only for Christians, I would challenge you to listen to this episode and read from the selected texts below. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone! I will ask Christians to do the same thing when we study other atheistic philosophers and non-religious Christian figures.

Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, Theist, or even an Atheist, there is wisdom to be uncovered by reading through the teachings of Jesus Christ that apply to all people, in all eras, and all backgrounds. The goal today is to unpack and disentangle the theology from the universal wisdom that Jesus spoke about during his time on earth.

Ultimately, we will boil down the teachings of Jesus Christ to five core teachings that repeatedly recur in the Christian doctrines that transcend religiosity and provide a framework for living life to the fullest.

How long will you wait before you demand the best of yourself? It is a fair question. It is a tough question.

The 21st century has been labeled as “The Age of Anxiety,” “The United States of Stress,” “The World of Worry,” to name just a few of the unflattering descriptors. The implication is that what we are experiencing—political extremism, deep cultural divisions, pandemics, terrorism, and economic turmoil, existential angst to name just a few.

It’s enough to drive anyone to a bottle of whiskey and xanax.

Yet, if we would all slow down for just a minute, there is a solution to so much that is causing the stress level in life to go off the charts. A potential answer that may change your life is a philosophy from the 3rd century BCE—stoicism.

In this episode, we analyze the very simple and practical application of stoicism in our lives to flip the script and change our perspective to focus on the things that we control. If we learn to do this, very real and very substantial life change can happen for you after listening in on this episode, as we march through the genre of wisdom literature.

If there ever was a Donald Trump-like figure in Greek philosophy that evoked both love and hate it is probably Epicurus. He had a legion of fervent followers, but probably had equally as many detractors. Often he is over-simplified down to a person interested in little more than pleasure. This would be a mistake.

In the success-driven, outcomes-obsessed world we live Epicurus is often painted in a negative light. Yet, his approach to life may be a perfect antidote to much of the anger, frustration, anxiety, and fear that is plaguing the modern world today if only we would pause to listen to his teachings.

The reality is Epicurus' thinking was highly advanced and nuanced, leading to his ideas becoming a powerful influence in modern thought in many regions of the world today. There is much we can learn from his teachings we can use every day to improve all facets of our life.

He was one of the first Greek philosophers to develop a strong tradition that avoids superstition as a core ideal. His simple and straightforward philosophy of avoiding pain, leading a simple life, and attaining knowledge has made his philosophy both attractive and influential to many.

In this episode, the goal is to understand his philosophy, and nail down practical real-world ways to integrate the best of his teachings into our intellectual, spiritual, and daily lives.

One key characteristic of an independent mind is not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.” This podcast discusses skepticism and the practical application of this ancient philosophy in our modern lives to make us better thinkers.

We go all the way back to Pyrrho, Sextus Empiricus, and other ancient Greek philosophers to look at the emergence of skepticism from around 360 BCE to the 3rd century CE.

Skepticism often gets a bad rap. It is much more than some cooky denying anything, and everything exists. There is so much more to analyze.

Albert Einstein hit the nail on the head when he said, “blind belief in authority is the enemy of truth.” When properly applied in our daily lives, skepticism helps us to question and doubt superficial or ideological dogma. Also, practicing skepticism fosters humility, which seems in short supply across modern culture.

In our discussion today, we dive deep into the pros, cons, and, more importantly, how you, in your life, can use skepticism to think more clearly and effectively to make better decisions in life!

We live in uncertain times. If we understand peace is within us which we can tap into for strength, life changes dramatically.

Conversely, if we expect or believe that an external thing, whether a politician, law, job, or material thing from culture will make us happy, we will end up disappointed.

Its almost guaranteed.

This is just one piece of wisdom we can learn from studying Siddhartha Gautama, more commonly known as the great Buddha. Everyone can benefit from studying the path of Buddhism regardless of faith, race, or background.

Buddha’s path from a child prophesized for greatness, to prince, to giving up all his material wealth, to a wandering nomad, to ultimately creating a way of life that billions have followed for centuries is a profound journey and transformation that can teach us all much about living a full life.

It has been a very tough week, with yet another mass shooting in the United States. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted. I won’t even pretend to understand the pain of loss.

It is perfect timing to be evaluating wisdom from indigenous cultures. There is so much we can apply to our current situation.

A thriving civilization living, interacting, sacrificing, solving problems, celebrating success, and getting through loss and tragedy together is powerful.

A dying civilization is characterized by distrust, greed, anger, hostility, and hate. It is pretty safe to say, the United States of America fits the description of a dying civilization in many ways.

We need to look no further than the political reactions to the shooting in Texas. Ted Cruz’s solution to the gun violence-we need more guns in the schools. The Democrat solution ban guns. Will there be a middle ground compromise? I doubt it.

Both point blame and demonize each other. It’s pathetic. It will solve nothing.

It is time to take a serious look at the constant assault we wage against each other in our political and cultural wars.

Nothing is free. Every action, word, and attack against each other has repercussions…eventually.  To search for solutions, this week we dive into the ancient wisdom of indigenous tribal stories.

Lesson #1

Join the course for free! https://intellectualfreedom.substack.com/

We start our study thousands of years ago. The ethics of the tribal traditions, based on custom, found expression in many cultures as customary laws. We are going to study many of the earliest.

A legal custom is the established pattern of behavior that individuals can objectively verify within a particular social setting or civilization. A person can carry out a claim to defend "what has always been done and accepted by law."

Customary law exists where:

  1. specific legal practice is observed and
  2. the relevant individuals consider it to be law

Most customary laws deal with community standards that have been long-established in a given locale. These laws have often been passed down verbally for thousands of years in ancient civilizations.

The customary laws we will study in this lesson had a religious and a secular facet and, in the Babylonian case, provided an early example of recognizable civil government.

The primary impetus for a formal government apparatus appears to come from the development of cities, which conceptually take the form of collections of strangers (i.e., unfamiliar people).

This development is essential because it means that the people in cities not naturally bound together by the ties and obligations of the family can reach a consensus on ethical behavior.

We will evaluate the development of customary law in the Code of Hammurabi and the Torah.

I recently heard a story about a wealthy student on campus. He got busted parking in a handicap-accessible parking spot. His rationale was, "It's not illegal for me to park in handicap spaces.  It only costs $250 if I get caught.  I'd rather pay the money and not deal with the rain today."

My first thought when I head this is how despicable.

There has always been a segment of the wealthy and affluent who believe in their superiority over the rest of society.  It most often manifests itself in the purchase and display of luxury goods--cars, designer clothes, expensive mansions, or extravagant vacation homes.

Luxury beliefs are different.  They are more dangerous.  For those unfamiliar with the term, luxury beliefs are ideas and opinions that confer status on the rich at minimal cost. But these beliefs have the potential to wreak havoc on the lower class.

This podcast discusses four luxury beliefs the affluent and wealthy push out in their public lives and social media.

Beliefs are the new status symbol of the affluent. The beauty for the wealthy is they don’t have to act on those beliefs. They only have to signal their acceptance. Luxury beliefs are perfect for social media. With little energy or effort, the affluent can rage against trendy social ills. They gain street cred with no risk.

Fun fact of the day, Gallop conducted a poll and uncovered that out of the world's one billion full-time workers, an astronomical 85% are unhappy in their jobs.

The usual suspects are present in the survey: domineering boss, annoying colleagues, type of work sucks, the commute, or no opportunity for growth.  We have heard all of these before.  Most of us have experienced them firsthand.

In Episode #74 of the podcast, I don't discuss shedding one crappy job for another crappy job. Instead, I want you to deep by considering one very Stoic-Esque philosophy question.

WHAT WOULD YOUR IDEAL DAY LOOK LIKE?  Once you nail down an answer to this question, then you can boldly proceed from there and take practical steps to live out your ideal day in your career.

It is incredible what can happen once you clarify what you truly want to do, as after you do this, you can put an action plan into place to make it happen.

Maybe it is a brand new shiny 9-5.  Possibly it involves some combination of part-time, freelancer-type gigs, or maybe even one of the crowds of nomadic workers. But, you can do it!

You are limited by two things: (1) owning your future and (2) investing the mental energy to solidify what you genuinely find rewarding.  Then you can map out the career path.

I can still see the TV public service announcements in my brain. "This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs," as the camera sweeps to an egg sizzling in a frying pan. I was an 80s child, and this was the message we were all taught.

It has been 50 years and well over a trillion dollars spent since President Nixon declared war on drugs. Yet, drug problems have intensified and proliferated. In 1973, illegal drug use was largely an American sport; now it is global. The current approach by democrat and republican presidents alike has not worked, and if we are honest, has never worked.

In this podcast, I had the opportunity to speak to a self-proclaimed ethical drug dealer. He discusses the failed 'war on drugs,' distinguishes between bad drugs and good drugs, legalization of drugs, and the promising science of psychedelics in treating everything from schizophrenia to stopping smoking.

One thing is certain, what we have been doing is simply not working. This podcast takes on the topic of drugs, especially hallucinogens, in a new light. We leave behind preconceived dogma to evaluate this issue from the perspective of a person who has used and sold drugs for 50+ years.

Someday is not a day of the week. For the chronic procrastinator, this may come as a surprise.

Yes, it is easy to joke about that certain person in your life being 'time-challenged.' Sure, some claim that without the stress of a looming deadline they simply can't perform. Some believe they are genetically predisposed to be a procrastinator--its Mom or Dad's fault you can't hit a deadline or stay focused to get important things done.

All of us suffer from procrastination in varying forms. If we are to be brutally honest. Studies of chronic procrastinators are beginning to reveal a correlation between procrastination and bad mental and physical health outcomes.

In addition, procrastination is a killer of dreams, goals, and ambitions. Procrastination will stop you from becoming your best self. Thus, we shouldn't treat it as a joke, justify it, or discount the impact on the teams you work with, and your family & friends.

This podcast discusses the problems and provides three easy-to-implement actions to minimize procrastination.

When a conversation turns to issues of race or identity politics things can heat up in a hurry. It doesn't have to be that way. The conversation is bigger & more nuanced than over-simplified, snide memes on critical race theory.

It is possible to have an honest conversation, move past the emotion and negativity to racial healing if only we will put down the emotions and walls and listen to each other.

In Episode #71 of the Intellectual Freedom Podcast, I speak with a 20+ year expert on race and racial relations Milagros Phillips. We discuss a wide range of topics from racism to critical race theory, and most importantly how all people can come together to heal the racial divide.

The narrative constantly attempting to separate society based on the color of the skin can be rejected. It just takes people of all colors and backgrounds to reject the divisive rhetoric.

The great thing about our conversation is although we didn't agree on everything, especially some of the core tenants of Critical Race Theory; yet, we were able to walk away from a hard conversation with a greater understanding of each other's perspective, the issues, and ultimately we agreed on many more things than we disagreed.

I hope you will check out the podcast!

You need to 'do you' or 'focus on yourself first,' are common calls in society. This is true, to an extent. We may have reached the tipping point where it isn't healthy any longer.

This podcast describes a sort of cultural suicide going on right now with a nearly obsessive, egotistical drive to satisfy personal wants at all costs, and without question.

I recently read an article in the journal Public Discourse by Carl Trueman titled, "The Rise of Psychological Man" which discusses this phenomenon.

The traditional mindset of deferring personal ambitions for the family, friends, community, and even the country is declining according to many indices.

The rise of psychological man is dangerous. This is a world where a person's emotions and feelings are ALWAYS right, because, well, they feel it. There is no objective fact outside of, 'you can't contradict me because I feel X, Y, or Z.'

If we are not careful, the very society that allows free-spirited individualism will get so extreme it may eat itself alive from the inside. Sometimes deferring personal gain, goals, or even desires for things bigger than the self are not just a nicety but a requirement to be an ethical and upstanding human being in an efficiently functioning society.

Over 75% of Kelly's body was severely burned in a freak accident when she was two years old. Her life was forever changed at that moment. It led to over 40 painful surgeries.

Because her scars were so profound and visible, she was often bullied, shunned, and avoided.  People were uncomfortable around her.  As she grew up, this lead to not feeling wanted, needed, or even loved.  The scars ran deep physically and psychologically.

Her story is one of overcoming immense obstacles, but ultimately a self-discovery of learning to love herself to become the person she was meant to be.  She learned not to be defined by external appearance or the tragedy that happened to her.  Instead, she now uses her tragedy to bring light and hope to others.

In this podcast, I discuss her journey from a near-death experience and burn victim-survivor to a 5x best-selling author, TEDx speaker, and life coach that has helped thousands to overcome their own limiting beliefs and challenges.

On the windswept southern face of the Parnassos Mountain in Greece are the remains of the Temple to Apollo at Delphi. In the 7th century BC, it would have been a glorious sight to see. Once carved into stone at this temple were two simple words, "Know Thyself."

It is easy to flippantly dismiss the words as we all think, "of course I know myself, I'm a father, mother, brother, sister, with X occupation, etc, etc." Yet, to truly know yourself beyond the image projected to society is not so easy.

In the book, "The Memorable Thoughts of Socrates," by Xenophon, I recently read a Socratic dialogue that caught my attention. A very arrogant and full of himself young man, Euthydemus, who thinks he has life all figured out, comes into conversation with Socrates and ultimately realizes he doesn't actually know much at all. I think our younger selves can all relate to Euthydemus, thinking we got it all figured out, then realizing later in life we don't.

For me, it is a reminder of the significance of humility, and the power of humility to lead us in the right direction in discovering ourselves. This podcast discusses how humility can lead to truly uncovering the age-old question of 'know thyself.'

In May Colombia erupted in protest, in June Peru elected a self-avowed Marxist as president, and in July, Cuba erupted in protests against the communist regime. Much of Latin America is in a state of serious political unrest.

Most already know the outcome of Venezuela's socialist revolution. Extreme poverty, destruction of infrastructure, a health care system in complete shambles, unemployment at extreme levels, and crime & violence so shocking it would make the most violent American city look like a peaceful utopia.

This podcast discusses the current state of affairs in Colombia specifically, and in general Latin America. I talk with Ricardo Vargas who lives in Bogota', Colombia. He is a lawyer who has practiced in many economic sectors over his career and is well-versed in the history of socialist encroachment in the region, and the current situation in Latin America.

It would be wise for all Americans to pay attention to our neighbors to the South. As China and Russia are paying attention. Over the past twenty years, socialist and communist leaders have made major inroads in South America while the United States has sat idly by and watched. This is a dangerous strategy we should all be aware of.

The famous philosopher Taylor Swift in her song, "Shake it Off," made the profound statement, "haters gonna hate, hate, hate." She was not wrong.

The phenomenon, known as CRAB MENTALITY, where people react negatively, in terms of their thoughts, statements, or actions, to those who get ahead of them, even though there is no direct benefit to doing so is something everyone has to deal with at some point in their lives.

The term crab mentality comes from observing crabs in a bucket, and all of them failing to escape the bucket because they kept pulling each other back the second one managed to get to the top of the bucket. Humans have the proclivity to do the same thing.

This podcast discusses how to identify the very toxic crab mentality in others. Sadly, the problem often comes from those closest to you: friends, family, or loved ones. Let alone the negativity many endure from social media, co-workers, or the public at large.

However, more importantly, this podcast discusses how to transcend the negative talk, actions, and limitations to achieve your best self.

Words matter. Words may reflect reality, but they also have the power to change reality - the power to uplift and to belittle. In politics, it is important everyone understands the ideological dogma the left and right attempt to imbed in their respective tribes through language.

In a world where the attention span of the masses is short, the ability to concentrate small, and personal bias strong, never has the power of propaganda been more evident.

We have arrived at a point in history where effective political propaganda is limited to a very few over-simplistic, overly-emotional points. Politicians harp on the slogans incessantly until every member of the tribe regurgitates the slogan on-demand with verve, vigor, and anger.

In this podcast, I break down the rhetoric and propaganda utilized by politicians to manipulate public opinion. Nearly all of it lacks critical thinking and is rife with fallacies in reasoning.

Specific examples from Donald Trump and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez blowtorching proper discourse, and committing multiple fallacies in reasoning are reviewed.

They alone are obviously not guilty, but this podcast shines a light on fallacies in reasoning politicians deploy to sway opinion from both the left and right.

The most important thing you can do to improve your brainpower is not enrolling yourself in a graduate program at the university.

Instead, head down to your local Gold’s Gym or Powerhouse Gym, hang out with some of the bodybuilders and powerlifters, then pump out some intense sets.

If the local 'bro' gym isn't your thing any Planet Fitness or Curves will work just as well.

We all know the physical benefits of exercise, they are numerous.  Yet, now the impact on the mind is becoming more and more compelling.

The fact is study after study is pointing to the fact if you want to keep your mind clear, sharp, and focused you must exercise.  It isn't an option.  It is a requirement for mental health and clarity.

Recent studies are now showing that even moderate, consistent exercise will actually grow new brain cells.  This is powerful and life-changing.

This podcast discussed the research and practical application of implementing a system that could have a life-changing impact on the quality of your life over the long term.

On June 22, 2021, House Bill 233 was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida and takes effect July 1, 2021.

The legislation includes requirements to protect the expression of diverse viewpoints in higher education. It goes so far as to prohibit institutions from shielding students, faculty, or staff from protected free speech.

Since my podcast, "Intellectual Freedom," has been speaking on this issue since its inception, and I have been teaching in colleges and universities for 20+ I believe this legislation to be a good thing.

However, as with most legislation, the devil will be in the details and how institutions implement, enforce, and follow both the letter and spirit of the law.

To say I am skeptical this bill will result in any real change would be an understatement.

Instead, our intellectual freedom must be driven by internal mental strategies to ensure we live to our highest standards of critical thinking, reasoning, and yes, not being trapped by dogma, political propaganda, or other pre-conceived limitations.

This podcast discusses SIX characteristics of an individual practicing intellectual freedom in their life you can adopt today.

What if I were to tell you from a historical perspective things are better now than they have ever been in the history of the world?

My guess is you may think I am either drunk or delusional. I get it. We are bombarded every single day with negative news.  Plus, there are always bad things happening we need to improve upon, and to deny that fact would be delusional.

Couple the negative news with the natural human instinct to mitigate risk by drifting towards negative bias, and we have a perfect concoction for being over-dramatic and fearful of the future.

It is so bad some people have REM's 90s hit "It's the End of the World As We Know It," on a playback loop in their brain all day long.

This podcast does two things: (1) discuss the amazing accomplishments of humanity over the past 150 years, and (2) discuss key instinct biases, driven by the scandalous and shameful news media, that cloud our judgment to create fear and pessimism on about everything.

There are many things to worry about; yet, we shouldn't let ourselves fall into that ugly trap of fear, anger, loathing, and negativity to the point we lose the ability to think clearly and effectively address real problems.

The cost of higher education has risen by 1,640% since 1963. This is absurd. Few would argue the quality has improved. Oh but wait, it gets even better, more than half of all American students go into debt to get through college, and the average is $37,500 in 2020. Collectively, students owe nearly $1.6 trillion.

There is plenty of blame to go around: ineffective politicians, money-focused and politically motivated school administrators, poor faculty.  I know as I a part of this system.

In this podcast, I want to talk to students, parents, and concerned citizens about how to navigate the landmines of higher education, as there is a way to not only survive but thrive in this mess.

The "modern" American education system was formed almost 170 years ago--slavery was still legal, electricity was not widely available, and having an indoor washer and dryer were considered luxuries.

The system is antiquated and is breaking down before our eyes and the reforms administrators are focusing on will do little to nothing to fix real education problems, so students and parents need the right mindset to overcome the problems and get value from college--economically and intellectually.

As a Humanities instructor, I have sadly watched the cancer of cancel culture take root in America. Driven by political rhetoric from the extremes, amplified by mass media propaganda, the cancel culturalists lead a militaristic march, using language mirroring extremist fervor.

Without critical thinking or even basic common sense, far too many people are too quick to slap labels on fellow Americans, "ooh they must be a racist, sexist, misogynist, or must be snowflake socialists, or hate America if they don't agree with me" with a simple goal to remove their opinion from the public sphere.

Nobody is immune to the onslaught. People in media, teachers, actors, comedians, corporations, or everyday people have been ousted. How did this happen? Why are we playing with fire in regards to our free speech?

This podcast traces cancel culture from a philosophical perspective comparing the Enlightenment ideals from the 17th and 18th century, and one of its cornerstones--freedom of speech & expression to our current post-modern worldview with a vastly different perspective about free speech, power, and social hierarchies that not only accepts but embraces cancel culture.

One of the greatest sculptors and artists of all time Leonardo da Vinci once said, "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Our post-modern technological age has ushered in massive improvements in technology, efficiency, ability to fight disease, and extend life.

Yet, the more complex and technologically advanced society becomes the temptation to be duped by complexity bias gets greater and greater.

Complexity bias is a logical fallacy that leads us to give undue credence to complex concepts.

Faced with two competing options, we are likely to choose the most complex one. That’s usually the option with the most assumptions and regressions. As a result, when we need to solve a problem, we may ignore simple solutions — thinking “that will never work” — and instead favor complex ones.

This is a dangerous trap as often to reach greater physical health, improve our mental outlook, and even our overall happiness, what we really need is not complex solutions, but nearly brain dead simple solutions, as often the path to success is not the complicated route, but the most simple.

This podcast discusses the nuances of complexity bias, and how to avoid it in all aspects of life.

On the Joe Rogan Podcast #1208 with guest Jordan Peterson, they discussed the idea that pain, for all intents and purposes is a GOOD thing. In fact, we need it to grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

Pain is worth exploring because all of us experience pain. You may be going through it right now.

Modern culture tends to avoid pain, hardship, and challenges. We often blame others. Some sedate through all types of physical and psychological pain. The avoidance of pain will at best lead to continued stagnation, and at worst, degradation into more intense levels of pain.

Not all pain is equal. There is the pain of loss when someone dies, which requires a grieving process to emerge on the other side. This is different than say the pain of rejection, physical pain from disease, or trying to change your diet or kick an addiction.

However, all manifestations of pain (yes all), if approached properly will lead to growth. Where the mind goes, is how life goes. Perspective is everything.

This podcast discusses how to get the proper perspective on pain, and why we should embrace a little pain and discomfort in life to catapult us to a better version of ourselves.

The Yin and Yang is an ancient Chinese philosophy dating back to the 3rd century BC. This philosophy describes how seemingly opposite or contrary forces actually complement each other, states of physical and mental health are interconnected, and meaning in life is really interdependent.

The Yin and Yang teach us we will have a much deeper appreciation of life when someone close to us dies. We appreciate wealth much more when we go through periods of poverty or struggle. We take health for granted until we experience disease or illness.

In short, life, to be lived to the fullest with wisdom needs a balanced perspective so we can appreciate, respect, and understand the good and evil, the happy and tragic, the wins and losses.

I ran across an article, “My Generation Is Blind to the Prosperity Around Us” by Alyssa Ahlgren. In many ways, Americans have things so easy we have lost perspective of how good things are here in comparison to most of the world. With a lack of perception and balance, bad things can happen.

This podcast discusses how dangerous it is for a person or a country to lose perspective and balance when evaluating the world we live in.

After delivering a talk this week in class comparing Epicurean and Stoic philosophy, I ran across a disturbing article in the American Psychological Association, "Stress in America 2020 A National Mental Health Crisis." It paints a bleak picture of life in America today.

I'll summarize it quickly--America today is the most sedated, medicated, obese, stressed-out, anxiety-riddled, and just simply unhappy since they have been tracking most of these categories.

The self-medicating culture that has become more and more powerful over the last twenty-five years is not working to solve core mental and psychological problems.

It is valuable to look back in history sometimes to gain a different perspective on how the limiting beliefs and mental strongholds in our minds can oftentimes be overcome by simply changing our mindset.

This is why I love the Stoics. The mantra, "get your mind right, get your life right," can provide a potent solution to the stressed-out and unhappy world many are stuck in.

This podcast delivers two very simple daily actions you can deploy today to assist you in overcoming many of the burdens and challenges life lays in front of us every day.

I recently re-read George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. I am always amazed at how some writers, philosophers, or artists have the foresight to see society and predict the future. A key theme is the effective use of language by those in power to control people.

Political power brokers and wealthy elites use the rhetoric of division to keep power, control the minds of the masses, and ensure people are pushed into ideological tribes of hate.

In this podcast, I discuss the rhetoric of division deployed against the people by political and wealthy elites to manipulate the masses into believing all the problems of society are caused by 'other people' who don't hold the same views.

When the elites are successful with their rhetorical strategies, they get away with deceit, corruption, and manipulation as the masses are too busy name-calling, blaming, and attacking each other as racist, sexist, misogynist, socialist, snowflake, or whatever label is in vogue at the moment.

I will also discuss two simple, effective ways to not get swept away in their deceptive ploys, which will help all of us to become more aware and alert, so the rhetoric of division becomes less effective.

A recent Gallop poll found 84% of respondents believe the media is responsible for the political division in America. Polls consistently show Americans are very concerned about the division.

Yet, I can go on to any social media platform and find individuals posting divisive political memes with countless “likes,” and angry name-calling in the comment section by many of the same people who blame the media or politicians for creating political division.

To trust the media or politicians to end the divisiveness seems absurd. The media is entertainment TV catering to its respective political base, and politicians from both the left and right are power-hungry machines that know the quickest way to create unthinking voters is the propaganda of anger, fear, name-calling, and stereotyping. We have to look internally to change the present situation.

There is a fine line between humor and being offensive. Without a shared connection, humility, and the ability to laugh at oneself, comedy loses its power. Political memes, a modern form of satire, creates division, not reconciliation, or change opinions.

This podcast traces the origins of satire to the current meme-culture we live in.

I am not a vegan fanatic. Although about 80% of my diet is now whole foods, plant-based.  Nor am I a carnivore Keto Diet bro. However, when I heard Bill Gates recently make the statement, “I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef.” It fired me up on a number of fronts.

Somehow the sweater-vested software engineer has become an expert on COVID, the environment, and now a nutritionist. In this case, he is dead wrong.

These synthetic biology companies making fake food by ripping apart the makeup of real food to turn it into something else is dangerous to your health.  These lab concoctions are loaded with chemicals and destroys nearly all the nutritional value of the vegetables that are marketed as making these mutations healthy.

If a food is a plant, eat it. If the food is made IN a plant, don't. It really should be this simple. Yet, as in most areas of life, people overcomplicate, deceive, and play sleight-of-hand games.

This podcast talks about healthy foods, billionaire investors cashing in, like Gates, in fake food, and the marketing of the food industry which is deceiving people to pump toxic chemicals in their bodies in the name of "healthy alternatives" or "saving the environment."

In my first podcast after an extended break, I want to set out for consideration that it is time to stop wasting time, energy, frustration, and sanity engaging in meaningless political debate online or in-person.

As a model, I use Musonius Rufus was a Roman Philosopher from the 1st century AD. He taught philosophy during the reign of Nero, a horrific ruler. Rufus was sent into exile in 65 AD but later was allowed to return to Rome after Nero’s death and lasted there under Vespasian until 71 AD until he was banished again, only to be brought back a second time. He understood better than most political turmoil, dissension, and political partisanship.  It is a miracle he was not killed during the upheaval.

Of course, we should always strive to understand and empathize with people we disagree with; however, Rufus points out that no matter how right or perfectly crafted an argument may or may not be if the other party is so blinded by partisanship or ego-driven, then, the best course of action is not to engage.

I discuss the delicate balancing act of political disengagement, whom to disengage from, and how in many ways rather than being negative, disengagement can be the best thing for the long term for both parties.

How we perceive things in life often limit and constrict our potential.

Plato’s 'Allegory of the Cave' in Book VII of "The Republic" is one of the most well-known philosophical fables in history.

The basic premise is as old as humanity-- can and how do humans perceive reality, how is reality shaped, and whether there is an existence greater than the average, work-a-day world contrived by society.

The fact is most people get trapped into limiting their potential. Most fail to go beyond the social constructs of conformity. Far too many get duped into believing the dogma of a political party or other institutions.

Modern society is most efficient when most people conform to what those in power want.

In our modern world, when confronted with opinions and perceptions outside of their own limiting beliefs, too many people resort to ignoring, invalidating, or silencing without exploring all possibilities with open-mindedness.

It is a very human and natural tendency. Plato challenges us to not be put into a box of group-speak, settling for average, and to push beyond the mental prison we tend to ensnare ourselves.

This podcast discusses the 'Allegory of the Cave,' and how each of us can push ourselves beyond limiting beliefs to mental freedom.

The events of January 6, 2021, and the storming of the capital building, were coming, I think we all knew this divisiveness was ultimately going to boil over.

I have no doubt that 99% of the protestors in DC would never incite violence, they were there to exercise a constitutional right.

Likewise, 99% of the social justice protestors this summer would never incite violence.

It is that 1% that is the concern. However, this becomes problematic when the 1% becomes 5, 10, or 25%, as by the time there are 25 to 45 million Americans willing to incite violence, then there is a real problem.

I find it comical when politicians and media pundits are aghast at the violence of last week, when their rhetoric, from both the left and right, are the very words that ferment and build an "us" versus "them" mindset.

Politics are not a sporting event, all Americans lose when we buy the ploys of politicians and media pundit attempts to divide us. We need to understand their devious techniques, so we can push back.

This podcast discusses the age-old technique of divide and conquer, and more importantly how the people can fight back against their evil and divisive tactics.

Society needs more subversiveness and skepticism. I don't mean physical insurrection. I mean intellectual courage to challenge and question the power structures.

The education system is failing in its role of creating an intellectually curious, critically thinking society.

The meat-grinder approach with standardized exams and regurgitating textbooks or technical facts is failing our country. We see this play out in public discourse every day.

The topic is personal as it cuts across many of the subject areas I talk about in my podcast and intersects with my profession of teaching the humanities in the college classroom.

The article, “Why Study Humanities? What I Tell Engineering Freshmen” by Professor John Horgan should be required reading for all teaching faculty, parents, and students, but especially for those of us teaching the humanities.

It is not healthy for society to produce too many conformists, worker drones, and not enough free-spirited minds.

A society of conformists or close-minded people too weak to respectfully, openly, consider opinions and ideas they do not agree with is a danger to democracy, greater than any foreign influence.

People take offense way too often and easily. The outrage generating machines of social media are designed to keep people offended 24-7, and it is working.

Joseph Epstein published an Op-Ed in the WSJ, on whether or not incoming first lady Jill Biden should, or should not, call herself “Dr.”

A heated debate ensued about MD, Ph.D., EdD, JD and the merit or lack of merit of each credential and the hard work or little work required to obtain said degree. Hashtags were flying, name-calling and labeling were thrown around everywhere.

I have taught in colleges for years, earned a doctorate almost 20 years ago, Mr. Epstein can think what he wants, I do not care. Jill Biden can call herself “First Lady or Dr. Jill Biden,” I equally do not care. Neither should you. It simply doesn't matter all that much.

The media machine set the table with a deliciously controversial article sure to get people to bite hard and they did. Many were "offended" and needed to "stand up" for "the cause."

There are characteristics in human nature that lead us down a road to being offended. This podcast will discuss how to do a better job of avoiding the rage and wasting time being offended.

Every once in a while, I run across a blog post or article that truly captures my attention. A student essay titled, "She Tried," published by John H. Clark III on his blog has stuck with me this holiday season.

Educators can surely relate to this student essay, but also any parent, grandparent, business leader, or manager, can appreciate this too. It's real short but packed with some important life lessons for everyone. You can read it here .

As we move towards closing out this difficult year of 2020, there are a couple of key messages in this essay that are worthy of consideration and amplification that go beyond the words in her essay: (1) never quit and (2) always encourage and support those around you.

There are two salient points the writer articulates. The first is we should, no we must, never quit and just try, just step in the arena and begin! Secondly, your power to encourage others to act and persevere can lead to incredible results.

A prevailing ethos in the United States for 100+ years is the idea of the "American Dream."

The truly American aspirational belief that individuals have the opportunity for success and upward social mobility through hard work and discipline. Just as important is the belief of Americans that the next generation will be better off than the prior generation.

Yet, now in 2020, surveys are showing over 60% of Americans believe the American Dream is dead or dying. If this ethos dies, what will replace it?

Using mythology & philosophy, this podcast looks at human nature, how human-created philosophies and systems, emerge with a vision, hope, and optimism, but eventually, become corrupted and fall. They then are replaced, often dramatically, with a different value system.

It is easy to point fingers at Trump, Biden, corporate greed, the RNC, the DNC or the MSM, or whomever you are biased against, but for the prevailing ethos of a country to collapse, we must go much deeper than the superficiality of one person or political party to analyze human nature in general.

This podcast discusses why the American Dream is now being called into question and its very viability is in danger of disappearing.

It could be argued that when we trust people more, and we are trusted more there is the potential for unprecedented progress in our life, relationships, work environment, or any aspect of life.

Trusting relationships are powerful relationships, they are vibrant and healthy---when there is no trust or low trust, the relationship, is hampered, dampened, muted, or in the worst-case scenarios, the relationship is terminated.

Trust is no small task, no minor thing, but it is incredibly important.

Trust requires us to step out of personal comfort zones and opens all of us to being hurt; yet, for those who never learn to trust, life cannot be as full, dynamic, or rich with experiences as it could be.

This podcast discusses three pillars of trust that will help guide us to more trusting relationships in all situations from family to friends to colleagues at work, there are simple and practical steps we can take to empower to trust better and be more trusted.

Trust would be the greatest gift you learn to give and receive this holiday season.

Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.  Yet, in modern American culture, the tendency is towards conformity, not individuality, and freedom for most people.

Americans, from birth, have been conditioned not towards self-actualization and independence, but rather conformity and control.

There are numerous mechanisms used by politicians, institutions, as well as powerful and wealthy individuals to push the masses towards fitting in, doing their job, remaining compliant, following the rules, and not questioning the status quo.

This podcast will discuss four key areas of life in America that help keep the 'have' and 'have nots' conveniently separated the bulk of America from the privileged few.

Once we understand the mechanisms of control, we, as a society, have the ability to push back against the powers that be, so each of us can strive towards self-actualization.

We are told incessantly by the media the country is irredeemably divided. Yet, there is this cultural phenomenon called the "Joe Rogan Experience Podcast" that unites millions every single week.

Rogan's podcast is pulling over 200 million downloads a month. Talk about reach!

Here is why this is fascinating. Rogan is a self-proclaimed liberal who endorsed Bernie Sanders, later said Biden was not mentally sound enough to be President, refused the name-calling of Trump supporters by liberals, wants to legalize drugs, but defends the 2nd amendment. He left the authoritarian state of CA to move to the conservative state of TX. He just doesn't fit nicely into any box.

Rogan has the innate ability to transcend tribalism, political narratives, and ingrained bias' and allows listeners to fully appreciate and gain a deeper understanding of a huge swath of topics while rejecting the simpleton sound-bites of the MSM.

This podcast discusses how a pot-smoking, MMA fighting, comedian, meat-head gym rat, demonstrates the skills and techniques of a master mediator and communicator.

You are 100% responsible for where you are at in life. The position of self-responsibility has fallen out of vogue of late; yet, if we look at the greatest spiritual leaders, visionaries, intellectuals, and high-achievers, there is a common theme: you must get your mind right, to get your life right.

We are limited only by our minds.  Assigning blame for failures for not being where we want to be is easy.  Internally shifting negative thoughts to positive energy and translating the thoughts to positive actions is hard, very hard.

No president, government program, or external force can get you to peak performance. Likewise, to blame your circumstance on age, sex, race, parents, or the neighborhood you come from, will not elevate you but instead will leave you stuck in a mental prison.

This podcast will evaluate the power of your mind to overcome any barriers to success you may be facing in the context of Plato and his four pillars of a fulfilled life.

The solutions are simple, the thoughts and actions to success require much more, but are achievable by everyone.

We live in unsettled times. Is a revolution possible in the United States of America? It would seem an impossibility even a few years ago. But the question is worthy of analysis. What would it actually take to spark a war?

The best answer is found in looking at our own government developed programs to destabilize other regimes. If we look back to the late 90s to early 2000, the US State Department, aided by its National Endowment for Democracy (NED), RAND Corp., and the CIA, we find a blueprint. It is called the Color Revolution Model. It has been deployed dozens of times globally to destabilize other governments.

It is ironic the same tactics could destabilize our own country.

The color revolution method is simple and ancient: instigate and manipulate a frenzied mob around simplistic demands to accomplish whatever geopolitical goals are intended.

There are seven pillars to make this happen. This podcast discussed all of them.

This doesn't mean the United States will end up in a Civil War, but understanding the signs and tactics deployed to instigate war gives us insight into how it could happen in America.

One of the most profound statements I ever read comes from George Orwell’s prophetic book "1984," the quote was “I understand how, I do not understand why.”

With all the technological and scientific advances, medical innovations, even space travel, humans are amazing at figuring out the “how” of things but the “why” is so much more challenging and important to human peak performance.

We understand how a person can become addicted to drugs or alcohol, but why?

We understand how a seemingly healthy child can get an illness and die way too soon in life, but why?

We can understand how a person senselessly murders another person, but why?

We can understand how a CEO embezzles millions of dollars, but why?

So why do you, do the things you do? You already know how you got to where you are in life as you read this. However, a more profound question to answer is why.

This podcast attempts to answer the 'whys' of human performance by looking at universal human characteristics and truths but explained by analyzing some of the greatest figures in world history from DaVinci to Einstein and others in-between.

Democracy is a fragile thing. A cornerstone of a vibrant democratic society includes freedom of expression. Cancel culture is the antithesis of freedom of expression.

The emergence of cancel culture is a symptom of how sick American democracy has become in our modern world.

When a society is more passionate about name-calling, de-platforming, shouting down, ignoring, or canceling opposing views than defending a position, critically evaluating opinions, and demonstrating open-mindedness, that society is killing itself from within.

Cancel culture aligns perfectly with a one-opinion communist or socialist mindset, not democracy. It needs to stop. Left and Right need to come together and end cancel culture.

This podcast discusses this ugly and dangerous phenomenon and the role all of us can play in overcoming this poisonous characteristic of America.

Ah, the aftermath of the Thanksgiving weekend. The ooh-so American holiday where, beyond giving thanks, the main purpose is to consume vast amounts of food beyond sanity, then spend the remainder of the day in a catatonic state of food hangover.

Many feel guilty for gluttonous consumption. Guilt is the gift that will keep on giving long beyond the last piece of pumpkin pie, but it doesn't have to be this way.

There is an effective change you can make to your lifestyle as we move post-Thanksgiving and pre-Christmas holiday gatherings to super-charge your mind and body heading into 2021.

After an ER visit on July 7, 2020, for severe abdominal pain, for the second time in five years, I knew change was required. I went in sick, tired, a bit overweight, and emerged with an entirely new perspective on life.

145 days later, I am 30 pounds lighter, mentally sharper, sleep better, and more full of energy than I have been in 20 years.

This podcast talks about just one very simple lifestyle change I deployed, and you can as well.  If you do this one thing your mind and body will never be the same again.

It was back in January 2020 during the presidential primary season, pre-COVID, and in a discussion in one of my classes, a student, asked, “why are the candidates we get to choose for president so dumb, old, and pathetic?”

Yes, the question was blunt, a bit over-simplistic, and rude. Yet, the tone of this young man's voice was one of real frustration many of us feel about our choice of candidates.

There is a lack of intelligence, critical thinking, communication, leadership, ethics, and morals. Some candidates lack all of these traits and some a combination of any of the above from both political parties.

We have intelligent, high-caliber people serving in all kinds of capacities in this country; yet, they avoid politics like the plague, and instead we are left with a gaggle of partisan hacks who all too often talk and behave more like school-children than leaders of our nation.

The podcast discusses the American political class, what happened to our politicians, and why, we are so often disappointed with our choices.

COVID has altered how classroom content is delivered. Also, it is bringing to the surface how students, parents, and even high school students value college and the 'college experience.'

Colleges are facing hundreds of lawsuits by students arguing they are not getting the same value online. They want a refund because online education doesn't match the tuition paid.

Is the "value" of college just the degree or technical knowledge? Or are students and parents paying a huge premium in search of the "college experience."

The lawsuits are answering the question. Many are attending for the "college experience" as much as for the credential.

Students want the sports teams, college bars, fancy dormitories, hi-tech student centers, gym complexes, fraternities, sororities, and all the accompanying social distractions. When students don't get them, they are leary to attend, as evidenced in the declining enrollment trends.

This podcast discusses the value of the degree for a career versus the monetary premium of "the college experience" in the age of COVID. For those short on money, staring at over-whelming student loan debt, this question transcends COVID.

A deer hunter shoots a deer with a clean shot.  It bolts and runs full-tilt. The deer is dying, it just doesn't realize it. The deer may run hundreds of yards for hours before dying, sometimes less. Yet, death is certain.

American democracy is in trouble. Our political system is like the deer that has been shot, severely wounded, and running, yet most don't stop to consider the severity.  Our democracy is failing and it is time to evaluate what has happened before it is too late.

It isn't Donald Trump or Joe Biden's fault.  One election cycle didn't cause the problems. There are embedded flaws and vulnerabilities in the American political system becoming more apparent and exploited more frequently.

Americans assume our democracy is a fail-safe system, but this is not true. The Romans and Greeks also believed their systems would last forever. Even Venezuelans in our modern times would have never dreamed their oil-rich country would fall to a socialist hell so quickly.

This podcast discusses democracy in America, and how we can ensure democracy continues for centuries to come.

If you feel like nobody cares if you’re alive, try missing a couple of mortgage, student loan, or car payments.

Money since inception around 1200-800 BCE has dominated culture. The historical view of money mainly is concerned with social and economic systems using money as a means of trading wealth indirectly.

Money was a wonderful evolution for human society, so we are told. It allowed ease and efficiency 'for the masses.'

As we look at our modern world, it could be argued money is the most effective tool ever created by the wealthy and powerful to control the masses. It is the tool that nearly guarantees a separation between social classes.

The proper perspective on money is required to reach your full potential in life.

Even pre-COVID, surveys show 73% of Americans worry about money, about 30% of those, say they worry "constantly." 82% of Americans do not believe they will have any money to retire.

Student loans and mortgage debt are ballooning.

This podcast looks at the concept of money, how it was first created, how it is used to manipulate the low and middle classes, and how to escape entrapment. It is possible to ensure you are in control of your money, instead of it controlling you.

America’s relationship with MSM has become toxic. It is time to end the relationship. There is no amicable resolution. Trust has been broken, frustration and anger dominate, and compromise is not possible.

Everyone at some point has lived through a toxic relationship. It usually starts with excitement, happiness, and trust.  Over time, you realize that person isn't at all what you thought.

In relationships, it is always hard to admit when it is over. Our collective relationship with the mainstream media is over. The news media, as we had known it, is dead. It is time to move on.  They are no longer who we thought they were.

Continuing to be mad at obvious media bias, solves nothing. The media is who it is, and it will not change.

Our current media looks and sounds more like state-run propaganda machines seen in China and Venezuela instead of trusted, unbiased news sources. It is time to accept this and move on.

This podcast discusses the toxic relationship Americans have with the news media, but more importantly how to end the relationship and discover new ways to consume news.

For democracy to operate effectively it must have a free, vibrant, unbiased, and ethical press. The media is supposed to be the people's watchdog.

Sadly, 4 out of 5 Americans (86%) believe news organizations advocate political viewpoints rather than report the news.

This now extends to our social media platforms. The distrust has brought Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 into the crosshairs.

Election 2020 brought freedom of expression on social media platforms into focus.  At times social media turned a blind eye to questionable content but aggressively banned or suppressed other content.  Social media is not operating as an unbiased platform.

The selective enforcement by Big Tech through ever-changing 'user agreements' has caught the eye of politicians and citizens alike from both sides of the political divide.  It appears Big Tech and the very concept of freedom of expression is on a collision course.

Section 230 is important as it may determine if, when, how, and under what circumstance online content is monitored, suppressed, banned, or individuals de-platformed.

Your ability, and mine, regardless if we agree to express an opinion online are at stake. This podcast discusses Section 230 and potential outcomes.

Joseph Stalin, ironically, once said, "the people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything."

Ouch. That quote stings a bit coming from a communist considering the current state of our 2020 election heading almost certainly to recounts, court challenges, and maybe even the Supreme Court.  Who knows?

We made it, sort of, past the election. Yet the ride is not over. Hopefully, it ends soon, but we are probably in for a long contentious, and turbulent period of time.

How should Americans handle this situation?

What if I told you, this moment in time, this crazy election, in this crazy year could become the catalyst for change in your life in which you never view external events the same again?  This could be the time you learn to control negative emotions and produce positive outcomes.

You can easily learn simple stoic mental exercises to hone your energies towards positive actions and discard the things that cause useless stress, anger, and worry during this election drama and beyond.  No life coach, psychologists, or anti-depressant drugs  needed. :-)

It has been said an American will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but will not cross the street to vote in a national election.

In 2016 only about 57% of Americans voted, over 80 million people didn't bother. I am not talking about the vaunted "undecided" the pollsters fixate, I mean Americans who choose to not participate, at all.

There is a massive block of disengaged citizens who have no desire, no interest, are so overwhelmed with life, or no faith in democracy that they willingly do not participate.

It appears many more will vote this election cycle, but it will more than likely not match participation rates above 80% in prior generations.

We do not have, nor can we have a thriving democracy when roughly 40-50% of the voters do not participate.

Elections swing on less than 1 million votes, sometimes less than 200,000 votes, so to have even a conservative number of 40-50 million votes on the sidelines is staggering.

This podcast will break down the most comprehensive study in the history of America on the disengaged to gain an understanding of these people, and the incredible impact the truly silent can and should have on politics in America.

Society conditions us to conform. A complex civilization runs most efficiently when most people conform to a life of complacency, while the few push the boundaries of excellence. Most people willingly give in to this societal pressure.

The beginning of living a fulfilled life is to understand the condition of your own mind. Most people, unfortunately, walk around stuck in a meek and timid state, unwilling to push beyond comfort zones, living an 'OK' life. A 'safe' life.

I often speak to my students about why people, cultures, and societies 'do the things they do.' All of us have the capacity to figure out what is holding us back. Most just don't take the time, they are too 'busy' with life.

Family, bills, health issues are real, but no matter what the circumstance a person can reach their best life, that elusive 'self-actualization' in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is possible for those willing to go deeper.

This podcast will discuss regardless of age, economic situation, race, or gender how anyone can discover their true, full potential.

What if I told you the overwhelming majority of Americans never post anything political on social media?

What if I told you most voters don't think if you vote for Biden you are a socialist, or if you vote for Trump you lack intelligence?

What if I told you 97% of the political tweets come from 10% of the users?

What if I told you the daily "my team" versus "their team" political games of "I'm smart" but "they are dumb," completely disgust most voters?

What if I told you, most people most of the time think most people are honest, hardworking, and want the best for their family, community, and country?

The perception of a nation completely divided along partisan lines is over-hyped. All that we see and read are hyper-partisans giving the illusion the entire country is ripped down the middle.

The voices amplified on social media are not the voice of America, they are the voice of a very loud, persistent, and aggressive partisan minority.

This podcast explores the 'political junkie' in comparison to the bulk of America, and it should be seen as GOOD NEWS as there is still a large, sane, middle in this country not freaking out on the edge of anger and sanity about every gyration on the upcoming election.

A Buddhist proverb says, "the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves."

If this is true, we have a whole lot of people focused on themselves and not seeking truth or understanding.  A recent poll found 84% of Americans are angrier today compared with a generation ago.

In the polarized and tribalistic world we live in, our society has an anger management issue.  The 2020 elections are only fueling the fire of anger.

Anger causes negative health outcomes, breaks down civil discourse and prevents us from coming together as a culture and society.  It is dangerous, and in America, we are playing with fire by not addressing the issue of anger.

In this podcast, we discuss four pillars of anger raging across America today.  Once we identify sources of anger, there is actually one clear, simple solution that can defuse most of the anger bomb inside of you.

We will turn to ancient wisdom, applied in a practical manner so you can turn the corner on the anger that you are experiencing in life today.

If there was a theme song for the election rhetoric of 2020, it would be R.E.M.'s chart-topping song "It's the end of the world as we know it" from 1987.

We have been warned incessantly by both candidates that if they are not elected president, the world will come to an end in various creative ways.

The truth is we suffer more in our imaginations than we often do in our reality. Politicians understand this phenomenon.

One emotion stands out above all others. Fear.

One way to overcome fear-mongering is to use an exercise from Stoicism called "The Premeditation of Evils" and if we use this, not only in filtering political rhetoric but in all aspects of decision making, we cut down the emotion of fear and arrive at a clearer vision of potential outcomes.

In the end, could the election of Donald Trump lead us to raise our right hand and scream "Sieg Heil" as America becomes a dictatorship? I doubt it.

Or, could the election of Joe Biden mean I will be standing in a mile-long line outside Walmart to get my daily food ration like Venezuela? I doubt that too.

It's time to cut through all the doomsday rhetoric, rationally, like a Stoic philosopher, and then, we can arrive at reasonable conclusions in politics and all life decisions.

Life is complicated. We tell ourselves this every day.

Yet, the great spiritual leaders, philosophers, and intellectuals since the beginning of time have shown us the way to a deeper and more fulfilling life.

This podcast suggests what you need is not more of anything. What you actually need is less.

Yet, the human propensity to complicate life continues to be a serious problem in American society.

We live longer, opportunities to excel are everywhere, and technology has opened doors for efficiencies and innovations unconceivable to prior generations.

Yet, we are one of the most in debt, fearful, angry, anxiety-filled, and drugged societies in the world. It should not be this way. It doesn't have to be this way. You have the power to change your perspective.

You need to declutter and reexamine your mind with a goal of greater clarity, improved function, and focus on the things most important to you.

More pills, self-help books, and personal development seminars are not what you need. What you need is to take the minimalist approach to where you invest your mental energy.  The result will be a life-altering improvement.

One thing that has become apparent is absolute power vested in our two political parties has proven our democracy to be un-democratic.

The rhetoric from the mouths of the RNC and DNC is more Stalin-esque in their angry diatribes targeting the 'the other side' than the voice of an open democracy.

Polls consistently show voter trust in politicians is at an all-time low, as well as the belief 'our vote matters.' Yet, the incumbent reelection rate is above 90%. The system is broken.

Politicians party-line vote on nearly everything, and we do not believe they represent, 'we the people,' but instead, represent the party and their self-interests.

If a politician stays compliant and obedient, they are continually re-elected. It is not uncommon to see them in power for 20, 30, or even 40 years as long as they tow the party line.

If they dare to challenge 'the party,' they often find themselves ostracized. This is not a democracy.

There is nothing in our constitution that says the RNC or DNC must rule the government. It's time for the dissatisfied masses to consider other options.

This podcast discusses the problems and potential options in America for taking back the government form the political parties and returning it to the people.

A famous French dramatist Jean Racine once said, "life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy to those who think."

Our emotions are powerful. They can help us reach our highest aspirations, but left unchecked can lead to destruction individually and collectively as a society.

Politicians want voters angry, anxious, and fearful. These emotions elicit strong responses, which aids them in getting elected.

During election season the goal of politicians is to control and confuse, not inform, logically convince, or bring us together. If they can pull specific emotional levers they succeed in manipulating and dividing the country.

Once under their control, we align into tribal factions divided against each other. This is happening right now in America. The tactics are deployed equally by both parties.

We need to recognize the manipulations. If we don't become disciplined in recognizing the ploys and checking our emotions, the politicians, who control the levers of propaganda, will control us.

This podcast discusses our emotions and how politicians use various mechanisms to control and manipulate our actions to win our votes and control our perceptions.

Let's be honest. Every day we are closer to death.  You and I may have a lot of time or maybe we don't, we just don't know.

Going through this hectic and busy modern life we live, our perspective gets clouded and we fail to appreciate the significance of time.  It is actually the most precious thing we possess, but we tend to treat it so flippantly all too often.

We can always get more money or buy more things.  There is only one thing in life we cannot duplicate, replicate, or get more of, and that is time.  Once we use it up, life ends. There are no exceptions and no "do-overs."   A fresh perspective on time is needed.

Busyness is worn as a badge of honor, proof of importance, and relevance. I propose it is not a badge of honor and our busyness is not a validation of our importance, but rather it is a failure to properly prioritize life.  We all have time.  We simply fail to use it properly.

This podcast discusses how we can literally begin anew with a fresh perspective, today, and how we can maximize our time for however long we have left to live.

Before the debate began, I had a feeling of dread about even watching it.  My fear ended up being well-founded.  I lost 90 minutes of my life I cannot get back.

I don't know who the winner of the debate was, but I sure know who lost--the American People.

The thought that middle or high school students, college students, and other young adults would see the behavior of 'our leaders' and think that is acceptable, and what they saw on TV was a 'debate' is very sad and a little embarrassing.

That thing America witnessed on September 29, 2020, was surely not classical rhetoric, and hardly can be recognized as a debate.  It serves better as a 'how not to' video on discussing topics, persuasion, listening skills, and common decency.

Yes, it is politics, yes, it supposed to be intense, and positions should be fervently articulated.  However, we need to expect more, from both candidates, from both parties.

This podcast discusses the debate, what is rhetoric, what debate is supposed to look like, and fallacies in reasoning.  It is helpful for all of us to understand this in a real-life context. You may view the process, the political parties, and your candidate under a different light.

Technology has evolved exponentially. The human brain has not.

Psychologically, humans are still prone to think the same way, even with incredible technological and scientific knowledge gains.

We need to objectively evaluate technology, not with hyperbole or conspiracy theory, but with clear eyes to understand how it has come to dominate our lives, so we can consider where a life 'fully integrated with machines' may take civilization.

The dystopian future portrayed in science fiction and Hollywood films in which machines overtake human strengths and intelligence to exterminate us is less likely than machines manipulating natural human frailties.

Humans are prone to addictions, self-esteem issues, anxiety, fears, desires to belong, greed, radicalization, and polarization. Machines modifying behavior by playing on our natural weaknesses is real and deployed right now across social media and search.

We will discuss how it is happening, the field of study known as Captology, and what we can do as a society to ensure we do not let AI, machine learning, and sweeping algorithms to control human thought and action.

The self-help industry in America was worth over 11 billion dollars in 2019. Seminars, courses, life and business coaches are some of the ways gurus get you to part with your money to 'reach your best self.'

Not to disparage the industry, but I would argue there is a cheaper way, free in-fact, if one really wants to improve their intellectual self. It is called reading.

When I say read, I don't mean Instagram captions, forum posts, book summaries, or 300-word blog posts. I mean real books.

It may sound simple, but it works. In fact, research on your brain and intellectual activity when reading is nearly infallible and indisputable.

In our busy, multi-tasking world, people are reading less. Although the benefits are profound. These include improved analytical skills, knowledge acquisition, reduced stress, ability to focus and concentrate on tasks better, greater emotional intelligence, a greater sense of internal peace, and even improve or build new neural pathways in the brain.

Reading is a simple, yet powerful, activity for your intellectual growth. This podcast discusses the power of reading.

"When even one American-who has done nothing wrong-is forced by fear to shut his mind and close his mouth-than all Americans are in peril."

A powerful and ominous statement we should pay attention to. The freedom of expression, a cornerstone of a democratic society, is under attack. Could it be the Dark Web becomes the 'land of freedom & free-thought' in the 21st century? I believe it is possible. It has the potential to fill the role.

Once home to mainly illicit drug traffickers, money launderers, identity thieves, and child pornography, the Dark Web is traditionally known as the 'red-light district' of the internet.

Yet, this vast and untapped portion of the web has incredible potential to provide a truly open and free place for expression, away from the prying eyes of those currently controlling the clear web.

With Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and others crafting community standards which basically state, "you are free to express yourself, as long as what you express aligns exactly with what we tell you it is OK to express," many are getting tired of the control.

The true power of the dark web is anonymity which feeds basic human desires: the ability to express an opinion without fear, escape the prying eyes of the government, and others refusing to be part of the surveillance society putting billions of dollars into huge corporations profiteering off actions online.

We are not at the point, yet, in America where the Dark Web is mainstream, but this podcast discusses what it is all about, the potential of the Dark Web for good, its evolution beyond the realm of illicit activity, and why it could be the weapon citizens from Western democracies everywhere turn to fight against Big Tech and growingly corrupt and oppressive governments controlling thought, narrative, and news.

What does it mean to be educated? The institution of higher education in the marketing brochures, pretty college catalogs, and mission statements paints the picture of a degree inextricably tied to being an educated citizen.  However, this is not necessarily true.

The university is in a strong tug-of-war between an increasingly vocal camp that views the degree as a utility to learn job skills, which equates to a degree, which then opens access to a profession and higher-income against the traditional college and university mission of education as responsible for developing intellectual, cultural, and rhetorical sensibilities to push the individual and society at large to a higher level.

This podcast looks at student perceptions, personal experiences working in higher education for 20+ years as both an administrator and instructor, analyzing the shortfalls of a college or university attempting to teach technical education skills in a world where the workplace is moving at break-neck speed, and finally what constitutes a truly educated individual, which is separate from the piece of paper being awarded in the college and university environment.

In the end, we also identify some characteristics of an intellectually mature individual and some ways, whether inside the halls of higher education as a student or not, a person can become a more educated individual.

One great way to increase our fear, anxiety, frustration, anger, and distrust about life in America is to turn on cable news, settle into your comfortable chair for a few hours as the evening prime time political shows kick-off on FOX News, CNN, MSNBC or CNBC. It is almost a guarantee you will leave feeling worse about yourself and life in general.

Ironically, Democrats and Republicans found something to agree on, they don't trust the media. In fact, recent polls are showing trust in the media even lower than trust in politicians. To score lower in trust than the politicians is hard to fathom, but the mainstream media and press managed to pull it off.

I thought it boring to regurgitate the same thing about the media that we hear every day—they are “fake news,” shamefully biased and self-serving. By now we all know this is the case most of the time.

This podcast is a historical look and analyzes how our free and independent press descended to this level of distrust, and even more importantly why. Uncovering the how is a more straightforward problem to solve, but as is usually the case, the why is more challenging. Both are explained in this podcast.

Finally, we discuss steps all of us can take to hold the media machine accountable in what and how we consume their products. Also, I discuss ways to bypass the media machine and still get the news we need to make informed decisions on important topics.

I hope you enjoy and find value in the podcast.

Technology has made life easier; however, there are unintended negative consequences of technology as well.  This includes the ability for politicians from both political parties, and the media, to influence and even deceive the electorate.

In this podcast, I discuss both cognitive and psychological human traits that we are more susceptible thanks to the ever-increasing role of technology, social media, and digital news production in political messaging and the political news.

In the field of politics and media, you can be certain, those in power, or those seeking power and influence, understand our natural human vulnerabilities, and they use them, daily, to sway and move opinion.  Many times they are influencing our behaviors, and we are not even aware it is happening.

However, if we understand the tactics those in power and those seeking power use against us, and we recognize our natural human tendencies, we can minimize the impact and control they hold over us.

In fact, there are very simple, easy to implement actions we can begin using immediately.  Whether you have strong political opinions to the left or right, or you are not political at all, understanding the tactics of politicians and the media will in many ways free you from the drama and rhetoric, as well as help you discern fact from fiction much easier.

The cost of higher education has been exploding.  We all know it.  It is ravaging students with debt and literally, causing students to drop out, and is preventing students, especially from lower socio-economic backgrounds, from even attending college.  The reason for the cost increases are many, but one is a completely controllable phenomenon, self-inflicted by colleges that must be addressed--the hiring of armies of higher education administrators and staffers.  Administration plays a vital role in higher education, but while faculty salaries are stagnant, administrative salaries are skyrocketing, and while the student-to-faculty ratio has stayed pretty constant, the student-to-administrator ratio is up dramatically, while over half the faculty on college campuses are now adjuncts to save money, administrative personnel are still being hired into newly created full-time positions.  I bring a dual perspective to the podcast having worked as an Academic Administrator and as a Faculty member.  This problem doesn't just impact cost, but it impacts the entire experience and perception of higher education by society at large.  If we are not careful, higher education as we know it could literally sink itself to bankruptcy in the bureaucracy it is creating.  We discuss this important problem.

In this podcast, I am going to reveal some of the most perverse tactics politicians use to manipulate our minds to meet their desired outcomes.  Both Democrats and Republicans are equally guilty. Politicians are keenly drawn to behaviorism and specific classical conditioning for one simple reason. It has the capacity to control your behavior.  You will learn how this happens.  In a democracy, for the politician, one behavior matters above all other behaviors, show up and vote FOR ME, so anything and any way that a politician can influence behavior is of the utmost importance.  We must not remain complacent, lazy, or oblivious to this any longer!  By understanding the tactics, we can identify the offenders, and vote them out of office.  The politicians are happily content with society divided, as when voters are angry, name-calling, and attacking each other, the politicians quietly and complacently are not held accountable and sit in their cozy world in Washington DC.  By the end of the podcast, a new light will be shown on the devious, evil tactics deployed to manipulate your behavior and mine every day by politicians from both sides of the political aisle.

Society functions at its optimal level when nearly all people are conformists. This is a sad fact that those in power understand.  Modern civilization needs many sheep but very few shepherds.  Too many free-thinkers are dangerous to the status quo.  Thus, those that have power tend to manipulate the instruments of influence, the media, public institutions, social media, in a way to keep the majority of people complacent, even blissfully happy following along ‘the narrative’ the rich and powerful want.  This podcast discusses who are most susceptible to conformity, how the education system in America breeds conformity, and finally tools on how to reach intellectual and personal freedom in modern culture.

We are undeniably in a very tumultuous time in American politics. Both political parties seem dysfunctional. The traditional Democratic Party is being ripped apart by a far-left, nearly socialist-leaning faction.  The Republicans are also in a state of upheaval, as Donald Trump has taken over the views of the republican party—and the era of the globalist looking Bush Family has been turned into a very nationalist leaning party. As each pushes to a smaller corner of far-left and far-right, the middle is getting stretched, pulled, and disfigured. Could this lead the United States of America and it's government structure to morph into a new model of governance?  Is the ancient City-State model of society reemerging in front of our eyes?  This podcast will discuss.

What does it mean to be happy? There are polls, surveys, studies done every year attempting to rate our happiness on a numeric scale.  It is almost comical the attempt to turn human happiness into a simplistic model.  If we really think about it, the answer to happiness, what it is, how do we achieve it, when we achieve it can we keep are age-old questions as complex as the human brain.  We will look back to the ancients and Aristotle in his book Nichomachean Ethics he attempts to explain the types of happiness, and leaves us with a very clear picture of what true happiness is all about.  Where we actually find happiness is nowhere near what the average person would think.  Much wisdom is found on finding happiness in the words of Aristotle and this podcast will explore happiness in detail.

Society needs to recognize the inherent dangers social media poses for culture.  Through this recognition, we can reduce stress, anxiety, and anger we experience participating in the various platforms.  In this podcast, we analyze ad hominem attacks, which are fallacies in reasoning, used every day on social media.  We will use a tweet by Tom Arnold as an example.  He is by no means an A-list actor or high-level media influencer, but he is a Hollywood actor and has been around awhile. In looking at one post, we can see how certain ad hominem attacks when multiplied by the thousands daily can destroy the fabric of society.  Not simply through ad hominem attacks but how this breeds an "us' versus "them" mindset.  Finally, the podcasts look at ways to but out the heat and anger from those that seek to tear down versus have meaningful dialogue.

It is a profound almost sacrilegious statement to even utter the words, “democracy doesn’t work."  Yet, if we are honest, the current system is causing an internal decay of the greatest democratic system to ever be created.  The easy targets are discussed: corrupt and incompetent politicians on both sides of the aisle, activist mainstream media instead of news reporting and non-partisan investigative journalism, and the proliferation of social media as a news source.  However, we often fail to look inside of ourselves, each of us, the 'voter' and evaluate our own lack of thinking.  We fail to look at our intellectual laziness, and our hyper-partisanship.  The ancients back to Greece with Socrates and Plato warned us very specifically what can happen when democracy goes bad--we are now living this out.  The parallels between the warnings issued in the 4th century BC and reality in America in 2020 are striking.  Democracy doesn't have to die, but it will if we are not careful.

Our society has been rocked since George Floyd was murdered. Emotions are running high, and the topic of racial justice has exploded.  Caught in the early wave of this was Drew Brees and statements he made about not kneeling for the national anthem.  It set off a firestorm.  This event highlights a significant philosophical concept--"other minds."  In evaluating this philosophy, we can gain insight into understanding and empathizing with others who hold different views.  In addition, it explains much about how heated explosions can happen in our modern world.  Most importantly,  it can actually help us to moderate our own negative emotional reactions.

The freedom to have opinions and ideas without restriction is under attack. Intellectual Freedom is an integral component of a democratic society.  Sadly, many restrictions are self-imposed due to a failure to think critically.  This podcast was produced with a goal of evaluating current political and cultural life under the microscope of critical thinking.  There is no political or personal agenda here.  I don't care what you think, just that your opinions are formed from thinking critically. Critical thinking is where true intellectual freedom is taken back from the zombie herds of social media, mainstream media, and political demagoguery.
