This episode is one of those that tends to define the series. It perfectly captures everything that I love about Doctor Who while telling an impressive and compelling story—using science fiction to explore the human condition and try and help us see the value that we all have in the world at large.

Series 5, Episode 10, Vincent and the Doctor

Helping me navigate an emotionally fraught episode is the equally excellent Jenni Fay and Ashley Martin.

While I may be still catching up to all of the Doctor’s adventures, the Doctor’s timeline finally caught up to mine for the first time. An episode set on my current year, or close enough to it. Of course, I can count on that nothing is as it seems.

Quite a mind-bending episode this turned out to be. It had me so perplexed that I’m thrilled I had an expert join me that not only knows what they are talking about but requested the episode. Otherwise, I would have come away from this episode with the completely wrong idea.

When I think that I have figured out the Doctor, something happens to send me back to zero. With this new companion, I seem to miss the mark altogether. At least I know what to expect when it comes to “The Weeping Angels,” right? Wrong!

What an exciting time. New showrunner. New Doctor. New companion. A new season of First Time Lord. After an appropriate amount of time after the final 10th doctor episode, I jump into this all-new adventure with some hesitation but a massive level of excitement.

Series 5 - Episode 1 - The Eleventh Hour

For all things that begin, there must also be an end. This week's episode feels like an absolute end. The culmination of a story that started in 2005 and ended in 2010. The conclusion of the Tenth Doctor's storyline and the last episode of Russel T Davis soon to be First Run of Doctor Who. That's a lot of emotional weight for a single hour of television.

New Years Special - The End of Time Part 2.

Jon Soble returns to finish out this two-parter. But with everything that is happening and this exceptional climatic finish, I needed more than just one Whovian expert, so Ashley Martin joined Jon and me to wrap up the Tenth Doctor's adventures.

It's a special, but it has nothing to do with Christmas episode art that evokes a strong Indiana Jones vibe. In contrast, the episode doesn't push anyone's narrative forward, but what a fun ride it was.

I still don’t know what to expect out of the Christmas special. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to them. It’s not always the introduction to a new doctor or a setup for the following Series plot. This unique, though, really captured me. There are lots of tonal references that spoke to me and a story that ties up some loose ends from the end of the Series.

After last week's big cliffhanger, this episode had a lot to live up to, but what a conclusion. This episode serves as an example of what happens when you have a plan and execute your narrative to tell that story well. I can't believe I've gotten here in one year of the podcast.

What a surprise this episode turned out to be. How can an episode that was written in 2009 be so relevant 11 years later? While the episode’s tone mirrors that of a classic Twilight Zone, it retains a very true to its self message of optimism at its core. It just goes to show you that Doctor Who wows you with an unexpected gut-punch of an episode just when you think the best episodes are ahead.

Series 4 - Episode 10 - Midnight

Because this episode is so well written, I invited one of the best writers I know to join me for this week, and fortunately, Jamie Kern agreed to come on. Listen as we both use some “amazing” words to describe our experience with this episode.

These last two episodes have challenged me with what I thought an episode of Doctor Who could be. This episode had so many facets to process that I felt overwhelmed. Upon finishing the episode, I postponed the recording of the podcast so that I could watch it again. After recording the podcast, I sat down and watched it again. In case you were wondering, I love this episode.

In what has to be one of my favorite stand-alone episodes of this series, I get to see how the Doctor and Donna would carry themselves inside of a murder mystery story. This story just evoked so many familiar and nostalgic emotions that I just smiled from beginning to end.

This conclusion felt so fun and satisfying that I almost didn't stop watching it at the end of the episode. There's at least one "spoiler's sweetie" moment that I can't wait to get to, and even though every unanswered question from last week's episode gets dealt with, the episode ends on what I can only imagine is the beginning of another adventure.

What a fun time I had watching this episode. From Martha’s return to Donna making her mark to my first experience with the Sontaran. I loved every second, right up until it turned into another two-parter.

With answers to previous clues surfacing, and as always, more questions being raised, I go to a mega-fan with all of the answers. Jenni Fay Berry joins me this week to explain Sontaran’s, Martha’s relationship status and to make me hungry with a lot of talk of backed potatoes.

Hard to believe it, but here I am, a noob, and somehow I’ve made it to Series 4. So far, the journey has been incredible. With every episode, I appreciate the myth of the Doctor more and more. With every Series, I become a more staunch Whovian. Fortunately, I still have a long way to go in my journey to understanding everything about this expansive universe. So today, we start the next chapter in my education.

What do you get when you cross an episode of 24 and Doctor Who together? You get the episode we are covering in this podcast. From start to finish, the escalating dangers just kept me on the edge of my couch the entire time. I’m almost too emotionally exhausted to do the podcast. But, like the Doctor, I will soldier on.

We continue with the conclusion of last week’s storyline, in which Daleks have infiltrated the depression-era 1930’s, New York. As the Daleks change and evolve, the Doctor faces his past thoughts and feelings towards the Daleks. This rivalry takes an exciting turn while Martha starts to come to grips with the idea that she’s not at the top of the Doctor’s mind.

I remember very clearly the first time that I watched as the ninth Doctor looked on to a chained and diminished Dalek and recoiled back in fear. I realized after that episode and the coinciding podcast that Daleks were a severe threat. Some weeks after the episode, I had a nightmare where I woke up after hearing the Dalek battle cry, “Exterminate!” I’ve seen much more from the Daleks, including an impressive fight between Dalek and Cybermen. Somehow, try as the Doctor might, the Dalek continue to escape annihilation. So now, the Doctor has to battle with them in the depression-era New York, and the whole thing starts in a theater. Ok, I am ALL in on this.

How can you take one of the most annoying real-life problems, like getting stuck in traffic on a freeway? Introduce a Time Lord into the mix. Watching as the Doctor and Martha navigate the problems of New New York in a situation that resembles our current real-life predicaments so closely is yet another fine example of how to good the writing in this show is. Jump in with me as I try to grapple with this Doctor / Martha adventure.

Series 3 - Episode 3 - Gridlock.

Now that we’ve had a proper introduction, it’s time to take Martha out for an adventure. And what would a Doctor Who adventure be without something extraterrestrial masquerading as something more magical. We also end up in a theater as a cathedral for aliens that have harnessed the power of words. Holy cow, is this episode meant to remind me how much I love the Doctor.

Series 3 - Episode 2 - Shakespeare Code

Let us get this new era in Doctor Who started. New Series, new companion. It still feels weird to have someone other than Rose be there for the Doctor, but if I’ve learned anything from Doctor Who so far is that change is inevitable.

Series 3, Episode 1 - Smith and Jones

While change may be inevitable in the Doctor Who universe, here in the First Time Lord podcast, I very much like tradition, and in keeping with it, Eric Sweetman joins me for the first episode of this series. In the U.S., the episode we cover in the podcast today is considered part of Season 2. In the U.K., this episode would be Episode Zero of Series 3. However you count/fit this episode into the series, it's an action pack, humdinger of an episode.

Series 3, Episode 0, The Runaway Bride

With so much happening in the show, I definitely could use an expert's help, and Jon Soble steps up with many pages worth of notes.

Also, joining me this week, for what will become a reoccurring segment during Series 3, Ashley Martin drops by with her excellent Doctor Who trivia specific to this episode.

To mark the milestone of having finished two complete Series with two different Doctor regenerations, I have to take a breath and reminisce with someone who, like me, is new to the Doctor Who fandom. My guest and I will share our favorite episodes and moments and stipulate what may be coming up in the subsequent Series.

To speculate, reminisce, investigate and clear up what’s happened so far in Doctor Who, I welcome Shannon Levain to the podcast. If her name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s my wife.

This episode was so good that there were many moments of high emotions and many moments of laughter. But at the core is the relationship between two Doctor regenerations and Rose Tyler. This episode's emotional toll is heavy, but the storytelling is so good that it seems like this was inevitable. On top of it all, we get an epic confrontation between two of the deadliest threats the doctor has ever come across.

This is the story of how Rose Tyler died. That’s what Rose’s narration says at the start of the episode. Of course, I hope that it’s not true because she’s my anchor to the show. Since the Doctor regenerated, she’s been with me, showing me that it was ok, that the Doctor was still the same person. This episode has many ups and downs and some big laughs, but it’s just the first part of a two-part story arch. So let us jump right in.

Series 2, Episode 12 - Army Of Ghosts.

For an episode with many heavy and dark topics, it plays out very lightly, and weirdly, almost comedic. But the story doesn't shy away from confronting the darker undertones, and in the note that I've come to expect, it will end in the most hopeful way it can.

This episode hit me in a very personal spot. Maybe it’s because Elton is “Vlogging” in 2006. Perhaps it’s because there’s a reference to a song whose title is Daniel. Most likely, it’s because it’s about a group of people that follow their obsession/passion and end up becoming a community. If there’s something I’ve found that around the things I become most passionate about, I end up coming across some of the people that have ended up meaning the most to me in life.

Let's jump in, feet first, and tackle the themes of this week's episode. From a physical manifestation to the idea of Satan, we have a lot to deal with here. On top of it, we have to grapple with the possibility that either the Doctor or Rose may not make it out of this adventure unscathed.

This week’s episode is the textbook definition of a Sci-Fi adventure: space base, inhospitable environments, and an unknown threat coming from below. This episode made my nerd senses tingle with excitement and recognition. There were so many things that made me nostalgic for great Sci-Fi movies of the past.

We continue the adventure from last week as the Doctor, Rose, and Mickey deal with this alternate universe's Cybermen. In Series 1, episode 6, Dalek, the Doctor sees a Cybermen head, describing it as the "stuff of nightmares." It meant little to a novice like me; it was just a threat of days past now rendered inert. But as I've learned, nothing in the Doctor's past stays there for long. There's a lot to unpack in the episode, and I have some nerdy questions.

Series 2, Episode 5, Rise of the Cybermen.

My questions will need a wordy Whovian to answer them, so I enrolled the very competent Eric Sweetman to help guide me through this intense adventure.

Going into this episode, I thought it would be about a character we've encountered in Series 1. Still, as seems to be the case with Doctor Who, just when I think I know where it's going, it goes in a completely unforeseen direction. I wanted Mickey's first adventure to be an epic episode, and I was not disappointed, even if Mickey didn't figure very prominently.

In a profoundly personal episode of the podcast, I discuss the story arch's conclusion that started with 'The Empty Child.' This episode is by far the creepiest I've watched thus far. The hallmark of good fiction, and specifically good horror, is simplicity. The simple image of a humbly dressed child, wearing a gas mask asking, "are you my mummy?" will forever haunt my dreams now. It's a more disturbing image than Fredy Krugger ever was. While World War II rages in this adventure's background, Rose gets courageous, and the Doctor is once again trying to save humankind from extinction.
