I still don’t know what to expect out of the Christmas special. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to them. It’s not always the introduction to a new doctor or a setup for the following Series plot. This unique, though, really captured me. What a surprise this episode turned out to be. How can an episode that was written in 2009 be so relevant 11 years later? While the episode’s tone mirrors that of a classic Twilight Zone, it retains a very true to its self message of optimism at its core. It just goes to show you that Doctor Who wows you with an unexpected gut-punch of an episode just when you think the best episodes are ahead.

The Doctor promised Martha one trip in the TARDIS. He stretched the definition once in the middle of their adventure, but the time has come to bring Martha home. Of course, I have come to like Martha, and I don’t want her to stay home. It’s not long before the Doctor hears something that makes him realize that he is needed, and during this new adventure, I hope the Doctor realizes that he also needs Martha.

I remember very clearly the first time that I watched as the ninth Doctor looked on to a chained and diminished Dalek and recoiled back in fear. I realized after that episode and the coinciding podcast that Daleks were a severe threat. Some weeks after the episode, I had a nightmare where I woke up after hearing the Dalek battle cry, “Exterminate!” I’ve seen much more from the Daleks, including an impressive fight between Dalek and Cybermen. Somehow, try as the Doctor might, the Dalek continue to escape annihilation. So now, the Doctor has to battle with them in the depression-era New York, and the whole thing starts in a theater. Ok, I am ALL in on this.

This episode is by far the creepiest I've watched thus far. The hallmark of good fiction, and specifically good horror, is simplicity. The simple image of a humbly dressed child, wearing a gas mask asking, "are you my mummy?" will forever haunt my dreams now. It's a more disturbing image than Fredy Krugger ever was. While World War II rages in this adventure's background, Rose gets courageous, and the Doctor is once again trying to save humankind from extinction.

For weeks now, the Doctor and Rose have gone is some fantastic adventures, frequently saving the world from all sorts of alien threats. I should be used to the world being in danger of ending, but this episode hit me right in the feels. In the most sentimental and emotional episode yet, I find myself learning some exciting details about the Time Lords. I also find my heartstrings tugged by the story of Rose’s father.

As if the stakes couldn’t get any higher!
