Formed in 1934 as a platform for the discussion and debate of important business, government and social issues. It is known internationally as a top speaking forum for prominent business, academic, and government officials, who address members and their guests at the Club's 35 meeting season. With more than 3,500 members, the DEC is a forum for vital issues. The DEC claims to have hosted every U.S. President since Richard Nixon and is ranked among the top speaking platforms in the world. Rich read that story in a book on a 747 from Detroit to London while flying at 35,000 feet, at 500mph, with 50,000 gallons of fuel on board, with 400 passengers and their luggage in perfect creature comfort.

During a visit with the Detroit Economic Club on Monday, Detroit Red Wings’ executives and players shared insights on the team’s approach for the remainder of the current season - and their vision for the future.
Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman and Head Coach Jeff Blashill acknowledged that the current season has been difficult. However, both are impressed with the team’s professionalism and expressed confidence in the rebuild.
“From my perspective, I’m pleased with the attitude of the team and the coaching staff is working hard with the players on a lot of things,” said Yzerman. “It’s a chance for players, whether it’s an older player or a young guy just coming up, getting an opportunity, or for the coaching staff is getting a chance to do things differently. Try different systems, try different players and positions. You’re learning things and it will all benefit you later on and I think the experience, the difficulties, the struggles, you get better because of it.”
Blashill added that the team is focused on sustainable improvement moving forward in the season.
“Certainly, we learn from the previous game but really have a next game and a next shift mentality as we move on with the idea that we are getting better," said Blashill. "As we move forward here the rest of the year, we will do that every day. We are going to try to get better as individuals and we are going to try to get better as a group. That is going to be our focus.”

At last Friday's Detroit Economic Club meeting, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made her first public remarks about her administration’s proposed budget priorities which include roads, education, health care and climate change.
The state continues to prioritize finding long-term solutions to fix the roads and will sell bonds to handle the most urgent repairs.
“Rebuilding the roads is one part of what we are doing and is one of the things I ran on and I know people are counting on that,” said Whitmer. “We introduced a budget that improves education and skills training. It protects and expands healthcare for families. It cleans up our water and combats climate change. These are the dinner table issues that I hear from people all across the state.”
Whitmer stressed that by working together to fund and enact better policies and programs, the state will offer better access to opportunity and quality care.
“This will help us grow our economy and ensure that businesses like yours can have the employees with the skill set that you need in order to continue to thrive and make investments in this great state.”

The Honorable Garlin Gilchrist, Lt. Governor of Michigan, and the Honorable Bridget Mary McCormack, Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, shared findings from their recently completed analysis of Michigan’s jail populations with the DEC on Tuesday.
McCormack and Gilchrist explained some of the task force’s 18 recommendations and urged policymakers to address both the large number of people whose lives are disrupted by short jail stays, who consume significant amounts of public safety resources, and the relatively small group of people whose long stays drive up county jail populations.
“This is something that is wreaking havoc on our communities,” Gilchrist said. “Since we know that one time in jail increases the likelihood of someone returning, we should be thoughtful about who goes to jail.”
Not only does incarceration impact an individual’s family and community, McCormack also stressed the direct impact it has on the economy.
“When you think about the money we are spending,” McCormack explained. “If you’re not spending it on jailing people who don’t need to be there and are not contributing when they are there, you are probably going to free up money for things that might make our communities safer and healthier. And might make our businesses more able to have employees who can come to work.”

The Detroit Economic Club heard Monday from media mogul Steve Forbes, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Media, who discussed forces shaping the future economy. He touched on drivers such as tariffs, underreported minority-driven entrepreneurship, and healthcare, among other topics.
Forbes said this is an opportune time to direct the trajectory of America's future and shared his predictions with DEC members. Among them, the health care crisis will resolve via free-market forces as people paying deductibles demand cost transparency, and entrepreneurs develop more innovative manufacturing techniques for pharmaceuticals.
Throughout history, Forbes said, every nation goes through pivotal events and evolves. America is experiencing one of those periods now.

Diane Swonk, Grant Thornton Chief Economist and Jeff Donofrio, Director, Labor and Economic Opportunity for the State of Michigan addressed the Detroit Economic Club yesterday as results of the eighth annual Michigan Economic Outlook Survey were unveiled. The results showed Michigan business owners and leaders are mostly optimistic but concerns persist over education, talent and infrastructure.
Swonk noted the difference between the Michigan survey results and a national CEO survey where global economic uncertainties continue to be a thorn. “Uncertainty is a tax,” said Swonk. “We are in a position now where I hope we do not see a recession this year, but the risks are still high. I have taken it down from 55% to 35%, but that is still much higher than I want it to be and that is purely because of policy uncertainty,” she stated.
Donofrio discussed the state’s focus on solving systemic issues with education and workforce investment reforms. “How can we make sure 10 years from now, the results of jobs, the results of the economy, where our curve is heading, is better because we helped in some way? We have taken that approach that doesn’t put all our bets on one thing, but it is a whole bunch of things that together are going to bend the curve upward for us,” said Donofrio.

Manufacturing companies who invest in inner cities help create sustainable jobs and that will lead to the revival of the American middle class, Shahid Khan, President & CEO of Flex-N-Gate, told the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday.
Khan recently opened a state-of-the-art plant in Detroit with help from city leaders to meet the needs of U.S. automakers – and change the lives of area residents.
“What the Mayor is doing for the city is an inspiration and if anyone were to ask me what brought the city back, I would say Mayor Duggan,” said Khan. “It would have been a lot cheaper for me if he had not been in the office, but last year we launched the state-of-the-art factory. I knew it was going to be hard, but it is amazing. We have over 600 employees and their families have changed in a good way."

By using innovation and bringing data together, physicians and patients can use pharmacy data to further value-based treatments.
“Even as we move to a world where the data that is existent in so many different places will be increasingly demanded by that consumer or patient into ways that they can actually integrate and so forth,” Wentworth shared. “Companies like ours, that are able today, to take those large quantities of data from various sources that are today fairly disconnected and pull those data together in a way to not only understand things different but predict and intervene differently.”

Providing clarity on standards related to fuel emissions, drinking water and the stewardship of the Great Lakes is crucial not only for the environment, but for the American economy as well.
“Deregulation does not always mean rolling back rules,” said Wheeler. “More often than not, it means modernizing or simplifying or streamlining regulations. U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell and Fred Upton visited the Detroit Economic Club and talked about bi-partisan collaboration to address policy issues.
In a discussion moderated by WXYZ-TV Channel 7’s Chuck Stokes, Dingell and Upton highlighted initiatives where Republicans and Democrats are working together to improve the lives of Americans. Upton discussed the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bi-partisan group that works together on key policy topics.
“The Problem Solvers Caucus is a valuable group for many reasons,” said Upton. “It is equally divided [between] Republicans and Democrats. We meet every week. In fact, we’re going to meet during this recess. There are several issues we can take credit for together. We had this awful thing called the government shutdown for 35 days. Our group was the glue to bring things back together.”
Dingell also emphasized the need for more bi-partisanship and described how various Democratic and Republican leaders came together to work on Great Lakes protection. For example, bi-partisan solutions now exist to smart water management including the reduction of invasive species entering the lakes.
“We are all very committed to doing what it takes to protect Michigan,” said Dingell. “We do not look at ourselves as Republicans or Democrats. We may be Michiganders and Michiganians, but we are united in protecting our Great Lakes. Even with our colleagues in the other Great Lakes states.”

The Detroit Economic Club hosted the 23rd Annual Detroit Lions Kickoff Lunch and Fox 2’s Dan Miller and Jennifer Hammond led player and management roundtables to talk about the excitement they share for the upcoming season and the long-term vision for the team.
Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Quinn discussed building a roster to win now, while still having a long-term outlook.
Management talks each and every day about current and future player abilities. “'What can you do now?'” or 'What can you do a couple months from now?'” said Quinn. “So, we have general managers, we have a head coach who always have to have that long-term view.”
New wide receiver Danny Amendola shared his season expectations and thoughts about being a Lion.
“…and being here in Detroit, learning more about the city, I’ve become emotionally attached to what the city has in tradition and the history this city has been through”, said Amendola. “I want to fight hard for this city.”
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence addressed the Detroit Economic Club in an exclusive members-only meeting on August 19, 2019. Pence reflected on his three years in office with President Donald Trump, while sharing his hopes for the country’s future – and how new trade agreements and the potential passing of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can play a key role.
“With sound monetary policy, we know we will support more jobs in this country," said Pence. "With the USMCA signed into law, we will strengthen the economy of North America like never before and by standing strong on our trade and balances and structural issues with China, we’ll protect American jobs and prosperity for generations to come."

Ronna McDaniel, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, addressed the Detroit Economic Club Monday and stressed the need for continued bipartisan effort as well as a culture of civility between political parties.
Comparing the roles of politicians to that of a boss or a coworker, McDaniel said that even though you may not like a person or agree with his or her viewpoints, you cannot let that get in the way of getting the job done.
“It is hard to attract people into politics when you have this incivility. But, more importantly, we need to continue to get things done,” said McDaniel. “And we have major issues facing this country, so, I do think if you are letting that incivility prevent you from accomplishing what the voters sent you to do, that’s a problem.”
McDaniel also talked about how civility starts with every American and how each citizen needs to take a stand individually if they see someone being bulldozed for their political affiliations.
“Go vote. If you have a difference of opinion, have a conversation. We do not need to be physical. We do not need to be abusive. I think that is something that we need to course correct in this country. And it’s going to take our leaders, but it takes us too.”

“Science is what makes the middle class,” explained co-authors of Jump-Starting America and MIT professors, Jonathan Gruber and Simon Johnson, during the Detroit Economic Club meeting on Tuesday.
Gruber and Johnson explained how government investment in science and innovation was fundamental in America’s mid-twentieth century success and how this premise should be considered as a blueprint for our economic future.
“The problem is that talent attracts talent - if you want to be innovative and you want to have a startup - you pull to where the capital is already. Our argument in the book is that it doesn't have to be this way,” Johnson stated. “There are thirty-six other states across the country that have possible next-generation tech hubs -- and this is how to have a strategic, economic development of science and technology to create better jobs.”

In today’s digital, media-driven landscape, it has become tougher to build genuine social connections with others, especially in the workplace. Scripps Interactive Networks and HGTV Co-Founder Susan Packard, and author of Fully Human, created EQ Fitness (a method to harness emotional intelligence) to address this challenge. She shared her solution at a DEC meeting Wednesday.
According to Packard, more than 40 million people suffer from social anxiety disorder and related mental illnesses. To address this national health crisis, she detailed the importance of understanding one’s internal and external emotions and how it impacts total wellness.
Positive emotions, said Packard, like hope, excitement, fulfillment and passion lead to a healthier mental well-being. She also introduced her three-step process in practicing EQ Fitness: first with willingness, then leading into trust and adopting a “we” workplace mindset. She tasked meeting attendees to utilize the EQ Fitness method to attain better work relationships and company culture.

On Wednesday, May 8, the Detroit Tigers talked baseball, shared stories from the dugout, and discussed how they are growing as a young team.
Detroit Tigers Manager Ron Gardenhire outlined his approach on challenging players to not only strive for excellence during the game at hand -- but also to consider the long view.
“The players are the ones that get the job done, but my job is to create an atmosphere where they enjoy coming to the ballpark. Sure, it’s tough when you lose a game. But there’s always another (one) the next night... so you forget it and keep playing.”
Another challenge the Tigers are adapting to is how the game of baseball continues to evolve with technology and analytics. Staying nimble is part of the business, said Executive VP and General Manager Al Avila.
“If you think you know everything there is to know (about the game), you’re going to be falling behind, you’re going to be out of the game pretty soon. Our solution is to bring the old and new together and make it work,” Avila said.

On May 2, PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan visited the Detroit Economic Club for a late afternoon meeting held at the Detroit Golf Club.
In a fireside chat led by Rock Holdings, Inc. Vice Chairman Bill Emerson, Monahan talked about the PGA’s Live Under Par motto and how players are interacting on and off the course. “They [the players] are understanding and are appreciating why they are there and engaging with fans,” said Monahan. “It really is a partnership that makes a big difference. Our players do a great job with that.” He also discussed the reasons for changing this year’s TOUR schedule. “That is a fairly wide-ranging question, but we realized that our whole season is stitched together as a season-long competition for the FedEx Cup and you end up against the start of NFL,” said Monahan.

Ford President & CEO Jim Hackett described the ways Ford -- and all organizations -- can manage industry transformation by intentionally viewing the world in new ways. Setting the table for innovation requires questioning the status quo, prioritizing disruptive thinking and empowering leaders at all levels to drive change, he said during his Detroit Economic Club remarks Tuesday. The most interesting innovations in autonomous and connected vehicles all tie back to the user experience. “Design thinking is a platform for unpacking the way things are and the assumptions about them,” he said. While scant on details about new products or alliances with other manufacturers, Hackett alluded to bold moves ahead in Ford’s business model. “‘(20)19 is going to be a year of execution for us. We’re turning the corner. You’re going to be hearing a lot about Ford performance going forward.”

Theatre has the power to impact lives – and to leave a lasting mark, Jeffrey Seller, the four-time Tony Award-winning producer of Rent and Hamilton, told the Detroit Economic Club Wednesday.
In a fireside chat led by WDIV News Anchor Devin Scillian, Seller talked about how his role as a producer also includes being a nurturer to every facet of the production. When it comes to selecting the production, however, Seller chooses from the heart.
“When people ask me, ‘Well, how do you choose?’, I choose from the heart,’” expressed Seller. “I don’t know what is going to sell tickets. And I only choose to please me and then I hope others will come along for the ride."
In addition to breaking barriers on the stage with Rent and Hamilton, Seller also was integral in legislation against bots and the creation of theatre lottery systems in an effort to bring people together.
“I think that the digital revolution has played an interesting role in helping us play a better marketer in the theatre, in helping us deliver the lottery to you, in helping me advertise to the right people. I think it has actually been a boom for us to sell tickets,” he said. “I think that it is creating a world where we want to go out, right?”
Creativity – whether through theatre or any area of life and business – is a way to find meaning in life and sharing experiences, Seller added. “From Grease to Stagecrafters, I make sense of my life by making stuff. Which is why I am making four new things, because that is how I say, ‘I was here.’”
PNC Financial Services Group SVP and Senior Economic Advisor Stuart Hoffman predicted slow growth as the most likely economic pattern to continue for the balance of 2019 and into 2020 during his remarks Tuesday at the Detroit Economic Club meeting.
Hoffman has followed economic cycles for almost 40 years. He predicted that The Fed will resist the urge to lower interest rates later this year, and instead, anticipates status quo lending rates. Hoffman predicted American consumers will infuse the economy with spending.
Despite some persistent worries by some economists over a possible recession, Hoffman’s reassuring forecast explains that “the growth hasn’t expired.” “While wages and confidence are going up, I am counting on you and me, the American consumer to move the economy forward.”
The national opioid epidemic is heavily impacting not only individuals and communities but also businesses of every size, said Chris Swift, Chairman and CEO of The Hartford, while addressing the Detroit Economic Club on March 7th.
The Council of Economic Advisers estimates the economic cost of the opioid crisis nationally at $504 billion, with lost productivity at $20 billion. The Hartford’s Opioids in the Workplace Survey found 65 percent of companies are financially impacted by opioid misuse. “It’s higher medical costs, lower productivity, higher absenteeism, higher training, and hiring costs,” said Swift.
Calling on business leaders to join the battle against the epidemic, Swift said, “It’s a widespread issue that requires bold thinking and a multi-disciplinary approach to this complex problem.” That approach includes reducing the shame of addiction, educating employees and their family members on how to avoid addiction, advocating policy changes and offering an employee assistance program (EAP) to help ensure healthy and happy talented workers.

The Detroit Red Wings visited the Detroit Economic Club on Friday, March 1 and touched on a variety of topics. In a roundtable discussion led by Red Wings announcers Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels, Alternate Captain and Center Dylan Larkin and Head Coach Jeff Blashill talked about League competition and what it truly means to be a Red Wing. “A word that comes up a lot in the locker room is culture and what that means to us,” said Larkin. “It means coming to the rink every day and working hard and doing it the right way. I think that goes to the city of Detroit as well and to everyone in here, if it is not going the way you want, there is only one thing to do and that is to work hard and do it the right way. That is something that has been passed on." A lighthearted audience Q&A session with the players followed where topics ranged from team camaraderie, dedicated Red Wings fans and giving back to the community.
Exponential technology change and global forces can quickly rattle any industry, reasons businesses must race toward innovation and transformation, said Jim Hannan, Executive Vice President of Koch Industries & CEO of Enterprises during his talk at February 26th’s DEC meeting.
Hannan added that though profit can be one measure of success, the actual goal for business is the value added to society through products and services people value more than their alternatives while simultaneously using fewer resources. Business owners shouldn’t fear change, but must adapt, and even deconstruct their own products and services, in order to make their businesses even better, he said.
“We think of this as the winds of creative destruction and what that really means is that in all of our businesses in our markets… we’ve got to have a mindset internally that we can’t be complacent with success, and that we’ve got to drive that creative destruction in our own businesses,” Hannan explained.
Alan Mallach, noted urban planner and author of “The Divided City”, and Maurice Cox, Planning and Development Director for the City of Detroit, addressed the Detroit Economic Club on February 12, 2019 to share their unique perspectives on Detroit's neighborhood revival efforts and what needs to be done to remove barriers to equality.
Mallach stated, “I think both corporations and foundations should be saying, ‘How can we invest in ways that strategically move those needles?’ Not things that look good or feel good for this week or this month. But have significant sustained change.”
“I think it’s really important to understand Detroit is at the forefront of experimentation and exploration and neighborhood revitalization,” said Cox. “These are pilots we’re going to learn as we go along…We are going to learn something from each of them and bring those lessons to the next crop of the neighborhoods.”
Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, addressed the Detroit Economic Club on February 7, 2019 and distinguished patriotism vs. nationalism. He explained nationalism creates first and second-class citizens based on ethnicity, religion, or national origin; while patriotism is about our values and understanding America’s imperfect history to work towards improving democracy and the American system.
“What we want to be in the 21st century is 21st-century patriots,” said Morial. “Those who place love on people and our nation above the idea that we need to distrust, not tolerate and hate others.”
Morial added, “It’s a value proposition that is bigger than a political party and political ideology. It’s a value proposition which is embedded into the words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It’s a value proposition which is based on equal opportunity. The concept of justice. The concept of tolerance. The concepts that have always been the moral high ground in American life.”
