Two history graduates discuss the female scientists, engineers and legends that are a part of NASA's history. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the US federal government. They were established in 1958 and were formally known as National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA –> 1915 – 1958). The organisation is most famous for the moon landing and the creation of the space shuttle, however amongst those who were responsible for this historic feat, there is a surprising number of women! This episode looks at the women who were a part of NASA's history, from 1922 to the present day.

Two history graduates discuss the life of Yasuke, the first known foreign Samurai. Yasuke (YA-Su-KE) was a man of African origin who ended up serving under the Japenese daimyo Oda Nobunaga for a few short years. Despite the short length of his time a samurai, his impact on the history of the region was significant, with his story quickly becoming legend. How did a man from Africa - potentially Mozambique, however this is debated - come to Japan and become one of the daimyo's most trusted bodyguards? This episode explores his journey, and the historical significance of the 'first black samurai.'

The legend of Medusa has existed for 6,000 years, and throughout the centuries her story and appearance have changed many times. From being a Fury with tusks and golden wings, to the daughter of a Gorgon, to the snake-haired temptress, Medusa has many forms. Today she is a symbol of female rage and empowerment, someone that is a weapon against the male gaze, literally turning that gaze to stone.

Santa Claus is known around the world for being the cheery spirit of Christmas, and for providing joy every year for children. The question asked in this episode is, what about Mrs. Claus? Why don't we know more about her? From the rise in the domesticity of Christmas to the oppression of women, the reasons for her lack of a backstory is explored in this episode. Also discussed is the various terrifying stories of 'evil Santa', and how the imagery for this malevolent spirit is different across the world, and the imaginative punishments he has for children who are on the naughty list.

Two history graduates discuss the life of Cornelia Sorabji.
Cornelia Sorabji (1866- 1954) was the first female Indian lawyer, and the first Indian to attend Oxford University to study law in 1889. She was a ground-breaking Indian lawyer who advocated for women, fighting against purdah and helping purdahnashins (women who were not permitted to consult male lawyers). Her father was a Reverend, and her mother was an educator who founded a school for girls and ran a teaching programme. Throughout her life she fought for the rights of women, however her achievements have been hidden from history due to her colonialist loyalties to the British Empire, her criticisms of Gandhi, and her nuanced take on Katherine Mayo's book Mother India , all of which was used against her. Over 20 years of legal campaigning, Cornelia fought legal battles for over 600 women and children.

Two history graduates discuss the life of Boudica, Queen of the Iceni.
Boudica was the Queen of a Celtic tribe called the Iceni, in what is now called Norfolk. Her story begins in 60-61AD, and ends with war and poison. Infamous as the ginger-haired warrior who burned down London, her story has lasted throughout the centuries, due to Tacitus and Cassius Dio immortalising and mythologising her story. As is the theme with this podcast, in this episode we find out the true story behind the fearsome facade, and learn about the woman who wanted to avenge the atrocities enacted on her daughters, and her people, by the tyrannical Roman occupation.

Two history graduates discuss the Pendle and Salem Witch Trials. This episode is Part 1 of a two part collaboration with Drunk & Twisted, a true crime podcast hosted by Samantha and Chloe.
The Pendle Witch Trials took place in 1612 and can be directly linked to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. King James I had an obsession with witches throughout his reign, following his near death experience before his coronation in which the ship he was on almost sank due to stormy seas - he believed the storms had been caused by witches. This belief in witchcraft and magic had been prevalent for generations, and continued for many after, across the West. Witch trials usually resulted in the persecution and execution of women, whether it be by hanging or by the stake. This episode explores the two trials, the links between them, and how suspicion of witchcraft affected women during the 17th century.

Two history graduates discuss the life of William Wallace in comparison to the movie Braveheart.
William Wallace is an iconic figure in Scottish History. He fought for Scotland's freedom during the first Scottish Wars of Independence against the tyrannical English King, Edward I. Although Wallace's involvement in the independence movement was relatively short due to his capture and execution in 1305, his story is still well known today because of his initial military success against the previously unbeatable English army. In 1995, the film 'Braveheart' (dir. by Mel Gibson) was released to critical acclaim. Today it is known as one of the most historically inaccurate films and has been heavily criticised by historians. In this episode, we go through the film and discuss the real life events that the film does - or more often doesn't - portray.

Two history graduates discuss the life of Annie Oakley.
Annie Oakley, the famous sharpshooter, had a difficult childhood. Despite this, she was very successful in her later life, becoming one of the most notable members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. She travelled across America and Europe, performing for royalty and political leaders and awing them with her incredible shooting skills that she had developed as a child to provide for her family after the death of her father. Annie strongly believed in women being able to practice self-defence, and advocated for equal pay throughout her life. This episode discusses the legend that is Annie Oakley, and all that she achieved in her life as one of the iconic figures of American history.

Mulan is widely known in the West as a female warrior from the 1998 Disney movie, however her origins are far more complex than presumed. First mentioned in the Ballad of Mulan from the 6th century, her story has had a significant impact on Eastern culture and has been told and re-told for centuries. From plays to films to poems, the young warrior who takes up arms to protect her family has unsurprisingly been a popular figure throughout the ages. Today's episode discusses the origins of the legend, the debate on whether or not Hua Mulan was a real person, and the newly released Disney remake.

Two history graduates discuss the life of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh.
Princess Sophia was an Indian princess, a suffragette and a revolutionary, according to the author of her biography, Anita Anand. Her father, Maharajah Duleep Singh was coerced into signing over his kingdom to the British Empire at a very young age, and was brought to Britain to the court of Queen Victoria (and presented her with the Kooh-i-Noor). Although Princess Sophia was a member of the upper class in British society, her life was filled with strife. Her rebellion against societal norms at the time and her prominence in the women's suffrage movement have been hidden in history, and in this podcast we attempt to highlight some of her many achievements.
