In this episode, we discuss parental leave in Japan, focusing on paternity leave and the Japanese's attitudes toward men taking a leave of absence from work. We notice a big gap between what Japanese law offers and men's willingness to take leave. We also took this opportunity to make quick comparisons with other countries regarding attitudes and laws.

In this episode, we decided to list and discuss the major events that have occurred during the two months we were not recording. Topics discussed include the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN climate report, withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan, among others. We plan to discuss some of these topics in-depth in future episodes.

It has been several months since we uploaded our last episode. As many of you may have noticed, both of us have teaching jobs, and the months towards the end of each semester are the busiest. We hope to keep uploading content regularly again in the coming weeks. This episode was recorded in early June and is based on the arrest of a 25-year old woman suspected of the murder of her wealthy husband, who was known as the “Don Juan” of his town.

We also reflect on other indexes and rankings that reflect gender equality and at the same time try to understand why Japan is generally ranked lower in such rankings.

In this episode, we reflect on the term “double standard.” After briefly discussing its definition both in English and Japanese, we reflect on racism in Japan. We specifically refer to Naomi Osaka, a professional tennis player, and discuss a possible double standard among multi-racial Japanese, especially between athletes and others of similar racial backgrounds.

In this episode, we reflect on the controversial remarks made by Yoshiro Mori, who recently resigned as the head of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee. Not only do we discuss societal attitudes towards women partaking at workplace meetings, but we also attempt to understand why such sexism occurs from a cultural and historical perspective.

In this episode, we discuss earthquake preparedness and whether people have a fatalistic attitude towards natural disasters. As Japan experienced a major earthquake last week, luckily with no major casualties, we took this opportunity to reflect on the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the 2010 earthquake in Chile.

In this episode, we discuss the expression “coming out of the closet”. Although the expression is a metaphor to describe LGBTQ people’s self-disclosure of their sexual orientation or of their gender identity, Japanese people have started to use the expression with an altered meaning, to simply disclose a secret to the public. However, just like the other numerous words borrowed from the English language, the meaning of 'fight' in Japanese is not used in the same way as in English. We discuss the nuances while reflecting on Donald Trump's speech at a rally before the US Capital riot.

In this episode, we discuss COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination in general. Countries worldwide are slowly starting to vaccinate their citizens, and Japan is planning to do so in the coming months. However, this raises the question of whether we should take the vaccine, which further gets us to think about the moral and societal implications.

In this episode, we discuss sperm banks and donor insemination. Although such service and practice are not new in many parts of the world, it is a novelty in Japan. Japanese women do have access to sperm banks; however, considering the Japanese's relatively conservative mindset, there are many limitations to such practice, which further gets us to think about gender roles and the notions of masculinity.

In this episode, we discuss infidelity in Japan and how celebrities who commit infidelity are portrayed in the media. Even during this pandemic, infidelity is widely reported in the news, and it gets us to think whether such portrayal reflects maintain behavior within Japanese society.
