Conflict happens...it’s normal...it’s inevitable...and it’s an opportunity, if we handle it in a Christ-centered, healthy way.
Technically work is a four letter word but according to the bible its not a necessary evil but rather something that can bring joy, satisfaction and impact. The bible gives us explicit instructions about work that just might change our view of work even though we might keep the same job.
One of the most important but overlooked spiritual disciplines is to examine ourselves and our relationship with God. If we aren’t careful we can slip into deception that leads to destruction. The wake up call in the scripture is a charge to be sober minded and vigilant in our relationship with God and the enemy of our faith. Being honest about where we are is critical of we are going to know where we are headed.
Christians by definition are called to reflect Christ as missionaries in a foreign culture and oftentimes in dark places. Our knee jerk reaction at times to how “the world” behaves and acts is often a misguided approach reflecting finger wagging moralists without the strength of character and compassion Jesus modeled. While there are times in which we must make a stand and point out the error in others, our primary responsibility is to model repentance and character so as to ensure that our message to others has credibility. The scripture is clear that we should have influence in the world God loves and whom Jesus died for without compromising our personal convictions. One of the marks on Jesus life and the life of the early church was persecution because of their message while at the same time they enjoyed real favor as well. At times it feels like many Christians believe that to have favor with “the world” it means we must be compromising something. Jesus life and the testimony of the early church speaks to the fact that we will likely grow in both persecution and at the same time favor.
If we don’t know who we really are we become easy prey for our enemy who would like to bring confusion so that we will serve his purposes. We are all on a journey of self discovery whether we know it or not and unfortunately we often choose unreliable sources to shape and affirm who we are. The only person who has the right to label or name you is the one who made you, when we discover who God says we are the days of insecurity gives way to a sturdy understanding of acceptance and love through Jesus Christ.
Our world is changing at a rapid pace. As kingdoms collide Christians often suffer whiplash as a result. When a collision happens you need something strong to hold on to. The mandate Jesus gave us during our time is not to wish for escape but to fulfill His commission.
In order for us to become generous we first must first change our minds about our stuff. The shift that must take place is to begin looking at everything I have and earn is Gods and not ours. When we make this seismic shift we begin to understand that we are not owners but managers and our decisions about our stuff begin reflecting the values and priorities of the true owner. The real question for managers is not "How much should I give?", but "How much should I keep?". When we begin living like this we connect intimately with the owner and are blessed to see Him work through us.
Whether we realize it or not money and possessions are too important to us. Jesus warns us to beware of greed because it is destructive but also because its deceptive. Very few people think greed is a problem with them therefore we don't give attention to it oftentimes to our own ruin. The bible gives us both a warning about greed and a prescription to end its vicious cycle.
Having conflict in relationships is normal but resolving conflict is not. We are natural born fighters but we have to learn how to deal with conflict in relationships in a constructive way. The best time to discuss and decide how to deal with conflict is not during the conflict when tempers are raging but before the conflict begins so we can defuse the conflict and repair the relationship.
Everything in life is built on trust. Whether knowingly or unknowingly we exercise trust every day in every choice we make. The tragedy is that oftentimes we give our trust to things that cannot bear the weight of it and we suffer the consequences of it. What we trust in is the foundation we build our lives on and in order to have real life we must build our lives on Jesus as its foundation.
God does not show favoritism. The invitation God makes through Jesus is given to everyone but this doesn't mean that we follow on our own terms. Following Jesus flows out of an understanding of who God is and how great He is in comparison to how broken and faulty we are. Following Jesus isn't a one time decision rather it shapes every decision we make thereafter.
Living a life of significance and being used by God strikes a cord in most which at first usually feels and sounds like reluctance. Though many have a desire to make a difference for God we all feel we have legitimate reasons why someone else might be more suitable. A quick survey of the scripture into the lives of the men and women God chose to use reveals that God has used some very ordinary and even flawed people.
Though we all have the same commands and are all charged to bring Glory to God collectively the Bible gives us a glimpse into the His specific will. God has a tailor-made purpose for each of us. We are created with purpose in mind and its amazing how when we discover that God wants to use our unique gifting and experience it is a beautiful picture of redemption, Most believe there is a purpose for their lives but many don't know what it is. Our prayer is that this sermon will illuminate Gods purpose for your life and help kickstart a radically different approach to life
Every person is born with a desire to live a significant life. It is natural and right to desire to make a difference with our lives. However this ambition is often naive, it's usually misguided and it spoils easily. The bible challenges us not to die to ambition but to direct it appropriately.
We often wrongly estimate a persons value because we have the wrong point of view. Part of the consequence of receiving the gospel is getting a new outlook on others and specifically how precious and valuable they are before God. Part of our responsibility as followers of Christ is to help people connect the dots that the love of Christ is the only thing that will redeem our value as His beloved children.
Vision is vital. If we don't possess a clear God given vision then we wander or worse yet we perish. Vision Sunday is a weekend that we celebrate what God has done and we "sell out" to what He will do in the future.
Many of us find our identity in the wrong things, usually be how well we perform or by the opinions of others. If we live that way we inedibly will live frustrated and fatigued lives. Many have an identity crisis but may have never pinpointed it as that. The good news of the Christmas story is not just that Jesus came but what He came to do. When we discover that not only do we discover Christ but we also discover who we really are.
The story of the grinch is the story of us all, the condition of our hearts determine the quality of our life. Christmas means more than presents, carols and nativity scenes it's about Jesus coming to fix sin sick hearts.
The Christmas season is supposed to be a time of Peace and Joy but for many it's a time of stress and busyness. The pace and pressure of the season can easily distract us from what is most important if we allow it to. This Christmas lets give the gift of our presence to Jesus and the people who matter most to us as it is the best present we can give.
Our love for God is in direct proportion to the depth of forgiveness you realize Jesus has given you. Our response of love, praise and thanks toward God becomes personal and extravagant when we understand that Jesus got what we deserved so we could receive what we didn't deserve from Him; complete and total forgiveness.
Jesus is orchestrating an encounter with us. Long before we started seeking Him, He was pursuing us. If we changed the way we see the events in our life from incidental details to divinely orchestrated events that leads us to an encounter we will likely see Jesus and have a greater understanding of what we are going through. Jesus wants to encounter even the least likely and wants to use us to introduce the least likely to Him.
Doubt is almost a forbidden topic in the church. Many aren't honest about their real doubts so we just pretend they aren't there until many just lose their faith entirely. The presence of sincere doubt doesn't mean that faith is absent and we might be surprised how Jesus responds to our sincere doubts.
Following Jesus means we told Jesus we will follow you wherever you go. Jesus takes us at our word and challenges us to follow Him beyond our comfort zone where real life is found and where people Jesus loves lives. Jesus will confront our obsession with comfort for our benefit if we let him.
The classic story of the "prodigal son" uncovers a truth that might be either beautiful or painful depending on who we identify with in the story. The hope offered though is that of a father's love and embrace to those who have misunderstood him. As a church we must be aware of those who have "walked away" from the father and of those who have "drifted away" and help them come home.
We define maturity by how graciously we live and by how generously we give. If we don't know what maturity is we will not know when we arrived and worse we might be headed the wrong way. We believe maturity is marked by growing in the grace of God resulting in generosity.
We are more loyal to the future than the past. The Bible says we should look at the past, we should learn from the past but we should never live in our past. We are called to move into the future with fresh faith and embody a spirit of anticipation of the future.
Jesus made an incredible statement in John 17, that the unity of His church would be how the world that God loves them by sending Jesus. We safeguard the unity of our church because we know how powerful it is and because it us under attack. The scripture is loaded with practical insight we must follow to maintain harmony with each other.

Theres an old saying that says, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" whoever has been on the receiving end of reckless words understand that words can cause more damage than being hit with anything. The scripture places premium on the power of our words and claims that words kill and words give life and we can choose how to use them.

The Christian life isn't a one time conversion event, rather its a series of conversions. I grow in Christ as I become convinced of His trustworthiness in growing areas of my life. Perhaps the hardest area of life to be converted is our financial life as money is the chief competitor for our heart. When we fail to trust Jesus in this area of life money becomes too important and will eventually hold us captive.
The average person spends around 100,000 hours of their lifetime at work. Many feel like their time spent at work is a necessary means to an end, but what if we began looking at work differently. Surprisingly the bible has incredible insight into "how we should view work", "how we should approach our work" and "who are we working for". The answers to those question just might change the way we spend our 100,000 hours on the job.
Guard your heart because it is the wellspring of life, our identity & our belief system.
"A Good Man" There is probably no greater compliment to give a man than to tell him he is a "good man". Father's day is a great opportunity to let the men in our lives know how much they mean to us and an opportunity for every man to evaluate their lives and commit themselves to become a "vessel of honor".
The Problem with Pride We all struggle with it, some are oblivious to it others are painfully aware of it's grip and the destruction that comes as a result of it. The problem with pride is that it cant be dealt with it must be destroyed.
Self control is hard. No one is immune from the powerful effects of our passions and desires and the consequence when they overpower what is wise or right. Proverbs explains that a person who lacks control is vulnerable and defenseless like a city whose walls have fallen down but thankfully there is a promise to believe and a safe place to run to.
Wise Fear We all have fears, sometimes they are justified but most of the time they are irrational. The Bible prescribes a starting point for wisdom and it begins with the right kind of fear.
Bad decisions have bad consequences. We've all experienced it and would all like to experience it less. We all want and need guidance in life instead of making a bad decision and thinking "I'll be wiser next time" we can learn to "be wiser this time" if we pursue the wisdom God has made available to us.
