What is a musical without it's musical numbers? Does it carry the same weight? Does it fail in what it set out to do? Does it even matter when two greats, Maurice Chevallier and Charles Boyer take the screen together? Absolutely not! Hear what else makes this movie work on today's episode!

Rather than a long synopsis of what the episode will be (because let's be real, you already know!) I would like to thank you all for your patience with us in getting this episode out. I apologize as there are some audio issues with Marilee's audio about halfway through. Hopefully these tech issues will be resolved by the time we get to 1962. But we appreciate you all, and we hope you enjoy this week's episode!

Swords and Sandals returns to OUTAO! But while many films in this genre rely on the tale of a hero, this movie finds it's footing in it's visuals alone. Without the hero narrative, can a film such as this earn it's keep in the history of the genre? Or does it fall short by today's audience? Find out today!

War movies are one of the most overdone genres in the business. Themes of antiwar, the human condition, and heroism are plentiful. But every now and then we see a unique story that follows an unsung hero. Decision Before Dawn is one of those films. A pleasant surprise for us for sure, and one we won't soon forget.

Gene Kelly puts a smile on his face with his enormous...tap dance skills! It's been a while since we covered a musical on the show, and this one will definitely hold us over for a bit! Visually stunning, albeit with a somewhat frustrating plot, An American in Paris delivers a great deal of excitement. We discuss what works and what does it, all on this week's episode!

Vivien Leigh is the absolute heart and soul of this movie. Vivien. Leigh. Not Marlon Brando. Vivien LEIGH. Now that that's out of the way, join us this episode while we break down one of the best stage-play to screen adaptions we've seen so far! And yes, Brando is good in this, but it's Leighs movie! A man torn between two women, two lives, and two fates. A Place in the Sun is often forgotten, but it was one of the most popular films released at the time. Just a few months after the U.S. entered into World War II, the Academy tried to keep a bit of normalcy (in spite of their president's requests) by continuing with their ceremony. This year proved to be one of the most shocking years of all time. With heavy hitters such as Sergeant York, How Green Was My Valley, and of course Citizen Kane, this year was full of upsets. Join us to learn of all of the biggest!

Humphrey Bogart is one of the most recognizable stars of the golden age of Hollywood. The final line of the film, delivered in Bogart's signature style not only is one of the greatest movie lines of all time, but also a perfect summation of The Maltese Falcon as a film. A blend of mystery, suspense, and of course one of the earliest examples of film noir. It is without a doubt the uh, stuff that dreams are made of.

Bette Davis is back! Here at Once Upon a Time at the Oscars we are always thrilled to talk about the legend herself, and this week is no exception. In a time where heroes are seen as caped crusaders and colorful costumed fighters, it's rare that a real life figure gets an opportunity to shine on the big screen. Even harder still is it to take a man known for something as devastating and tragic as war, and praise him not for his merit on the battlefield but rather for his character. Hence the reason why Sergeant York continues to be such a moving and inspiring film over 80 years after it's release. Join us as we talk the charm of Gary Cooper, the perfect scoring of Max Steiner, and the story of a true American hero in Sergeant York.

!941 is a great year for movies! But not every film nominated this year can be wonderful. Perhaps this story of preacher, William Spence is the example this year? In a year where Citizen Kane made it's way into the world, a movie like One Foot in Heaven that received just a single nomination (best picture) seems to be lacking what it takes to hold it's own. Listen more to find out if it at least holds up after over 80 years.

Ever find yourself pleasantly surprised by what you think will be a mediocre movie? The easiest way to do that is to watch a movie you don't know was written by the great Billy Wilder! The charm of Charles Boyer, the sweet innocence of Olivia de Havilland, and a wonderfully written screenplay make for perhaps one of the most underrated Wilder penned films we've seen. If you found yourself in the afterlife before it was your time to go, would you revel in the chance to play with the cosmic reality that is now yours? Or would you try to get back to Earth to finish that big project you started last week? Guess which one sounds more like Robert Montgomery in Here Comes Mr. Jordan! A wildly unique story for 1941, but does it do enough with it's themes of reincarnation and angels? Or does it play too safe in the world that it has laid out for itself?

A young artist was given the chance of a lifetime. Full creative control, a tremendous budget, authority to hire whoever he pleased, and he worked magic. Citizen Kane is on every major Top Films list, and today we determine whether it is deserving of that highest of praises. Without a doubt, Orson Welles, Herman Mankiewicz, and Gregg Toland created something the world had never seen before and arguably, has not seen since!

Greer Garson is one of the most celebrated actresses of all time by the Academy. With 7 total nominations, she was one of America's biggest box office draws in the 1940's. Blossoms in the Dust marks her second nomination for Best Actress in what is certainly an inspiring performance. Also her first film of 8 alongside long-time costar, Walter Pidgeon, this films is full of reasons to continue to celebrate it today.

The 4th Academy Awards were full of history making wins and achievements. Youngest nominees, highest number of nominees and much more are takeaways from this earlier Oscar Ceremony. And while the films of this year aren't ones that we imagine will stay with us forever, this year has proven to us once again that this is merit in the oldies and it's almost always worth the experience. And for those that couldn't make it through ALL the films, tune in to find out which films are absolutely worth looking in to.

Adventure films have mostly faded out of existence in the modern age. Especially films like Trader Horn, who's production could be described as nothing short of nightmarish. Between disease and death plaguing the crew, to disgusting and cruel behavior towards the animals in the film, Trader Horn is a harsh look into early adventure films. But does it's historical significance make it worth sitting through? Listen and learn!

What lengths would you go to as a director to get an Oscar nominated performance from your lead? Director Norman Taurog pushed a young Jackie Cooper to the edge in this early comic strip adaption. Lewis Milestone is one of the most talented director's to survive the silent era of film. Bringing with him innovation and a unique directing style, he managed to put out back-to-back success with The Racket, All Quiet on the Western Front, and then The Front Page. His films hold up today like few other director's from his time manage to do, and this week's film is no exception. Find out more on today's episode of Once Upon a Time at the Oscars!

Kenneth Branagh has had one of the most varied careers as a director in Hollywood. From Shakespeare to God of Thunder, it's fascinating to wonder where his passion for film making originated. Enter Belfast. Full of Easter eggs and tributes to the movies that made Branagh, Belfast is a short and sweet summary of a boy's life in a dark time. And that boy would go on to direct Wild Wild West.

Perhaps the most surprising nomination this year, Adam McKay's satirical comedy left audiences and critics as divided as it's characters. It's hard to say if this film is truly worthy of a best picture nomination, or if the Academy's need for it's 10 slots to be filled gave it a fighting chance. Is this comedy too late to the game? We find out today!

Once Upon a Time at the Oscars is the weekly podcast where we take on the gauntlet of watching every single film that was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards! Starting with the films of 1927, Kyle and Marilee break down these movies every week. Each episode is part review, part trivia, and part critique. This podcast is intended for anybody that loves movies. We have zero background in the film industry, we’re just a film-loving couple that thought it’d be fun to go on this odyssey together, with all of you!
Let us know what you thought of the film! You can send your thoughts and we’ll read them on an upcoming ceremony episode: outaopodcast@gmail.com

The nominees are here and we're starting things off strong with Jane Campion's neo-western drama, The Power of the Dog. With a whopping 12 nominations this year it is leading the Oscars with the most nominations of all the films. But is this one getting a little more hype than it deserves? One of your hosts thinks so! Find out who on today's episode!
Please note that this episode was recorded before the nominees for the 94th Academy Awards were announced. Therefore certain details, such as which categories this film received nominations for, are left out of this episode. Consider it more as a prediction episode that got at least the Best Picture nod right!

The incomparable style of John Seitz, the tragedy of lost film and the lack of effort to restore Academy honored movies, and the merits of melodrama are all topics we cover on today's episode. Are these older stories that have been redone in one form or another worth revisiting? Or is an Oscar nominee not enough to support the longevity of a film?

Here we are, back where it all began (or at least close to it!). Our first film of 1931 is packed full of racism, sexism, and insensitivities. But is there still reason to watch Cimarron in the 21st century? Is it worth forcing your way through the many issues to find the value? That's ultimately up to you to decide, but find out what we thought on our first episode of Season 2!

Country. Noir. 'Nuff said right? Jennifer Lawrence looks for her Maltese Falcon in the shape of her missing father. But is this bleak, flannel filled mystery worthy of a best picture nominee? Or are we better off just forgetting it, that's Ozark-town. Either way, the cheap noir jokes end here, and the episode begins!

In a screenplay that feels built for the Coen Brothers, but somehow also the furthest from their usual style we get one of the best westerns of the decade! Comedy, interesting and likeable characters, and a beautiful look of the American West presented to us through the lens of Roger Deakins makes this an instant classic. And look, I didn't mention the world building in the episode. But the world building in this is subtle but amazing! Talk to me about it on Twitter or something! But only if you think you have grit!

Are animated films able to convey stories with the same impact as a live action movie? Why don't elements like cinematography and editing get more praise in animated films? And do you all ever wonder what happened to the shark toy from the first movie? He has that great moment wearing Woody's hat, and then he's gone forever. I think about him sometimes. I just hope he's happy, wherever he is ya know?

And which King's Speech star did we share lunch with (sort of?) Find out on today's episode!

Two Soderbergh films in one year! A year that is surely the highest point of his career, but how does Traffic's take on the War on Drugs hold up in today's climate? Is it's simple story made more interesting, or more confusing with it's interlocking editing? And how many times will Kyle call Miguel Ferrer MICHAEL!? Find out on this week's episode!

Between the lead ladies in Crouching Tiger and Julia Roberts' incredible performance as Erin Brockovich, this has been a pretty awesome couple of weeks for women-driven films. We keep this trend going with a character that breaks all of the molds and manages to capture our hearts while she does it. But I don't know if we can say they same about Aaron Eckhart's goatee...

Unlike anything to grace the Academy Awards previously or since, this week we're talking martial arts. We praise the film's complex action and surprisingly simple storyline, all while learning about a genre we never even knew existed. Did this unlock the wuxia fan in Kyle? Spoiler alert: Yes it did.

This week we're getting sweet with our first film of the a new millennium! But is this turn of the century fantasy worth it's weight in sugar? Or does it come out of the gates too heavy-handed with it's messages? Either way, this is the day you will always remember as the day that you probably got sick of the pirate jokes. Savvy?

1991! Perhaps the greatest upset we've experienced on the podcast so far! But it's been a year full of great films and memorable moments, I mean, Home Alone truly deserved best original score! I don't see anybody making grade-A Tik Toks out of the Dances With Wolves score! Shame on the Academy honestly. Enjoy!

The long awaited conclusion to one of the greatest stories ever told on film was released in 1990. And it perfectly wrapped up the story of Michael Corleone and his fam.... oh what's that? Oh we don't have to give it fake like the 1991 Academy Awards did just because of the previous installment's reputation? Oh, well good! Enjoy the episode then!

The first film of 1980 has feelin' a little country! Especially Marilee, she had a southern accent for a few hours after recording. But it was worth to hear Sissy Spacek's best impression of Loretta Lynn. And although we aren't sure how to feel about Loretta and Doolittle's complex relationship, this film is definitely worth seeing!

The film that launched Jack Nicholson into stardom. Five Easy Pieces is such a groundbreaking film, but has it been outdone by films that have come after it? Have we reached a point where, though the themes of the film are still and always will be relevant, do we struggle to relate to the characters who graced the screen over 50 years ago? One of your hosts thinks so, and one doesn't. Find out who's who on this week's episode!

You can send your thoughts and we'll read them on an upcoming ceremony episode: outaopodcast@gmail.com
Thanks for tuning in!
See you at the movies,
Kyle and Marilee
We continue through the nominees of the first Academy Awards with Lewis Milestone's The Racket. Captain James McQuigg (Thomas Meighan) and Nick Scarsi (Louis Wolheim) face off in this "good cop vs. bad gangster" film. Find out what we thought, and if this classic still holds up!
Up Next: Wings (1927) directed by William A. Wellman
