I'm Michael Lavers and this podcast will help you improve your English. I'm an online English teacher for students learning as a second language. In this podcast, I answer your questions about learning and help you achieve your goals in British English. Once a month I talk to a teacher or expert on topics related to language.
English is pretty famous for having loads of confusing synonyms - these are different words that have the same meaning.
What learners often struggle with is knowing when to use these words, because although they have the same meaning, they are used in different ways and at different times.
In this episode, I'll be sharing some pairs of words that have the same meanings, but one is formal and one is casual, so you'll know the best one to use in each situation. I'll also be sharing examples and answering questions using these words, and I encourage you to do the same to help learn them faster.

Let's explore why Gerunds and Infinitives are so important.
The basics are a gerund is an ING verb that acts as a noun (eg. swimming), while an Infinitive is a verb beginning with 'to' (eg. to swim). Sometimes we can say both: I like to swim / I like swimming. But sometimes (in fact, more often) only one is possible.
What many learners don't know, is that sometimes you can use both, but the meaning changes when you do. In this episode, we'll be exploring these meaning changes in more detail.

Over the years I've taught students from most corners of the world, and over that time, I've noticed that students from each country tend to make the same mistakes. This could be due to the education system, or perhaps also the differences between English and their native language.
In this episode, I got a few of the largest countries and shared the number 1 mistake I hear from students in each country. I also share how you can avoid this mistake, then answer a question using the correct English as an example. Of course, I invite you to answer the questions too. You can do so in the shownotes comments.

Meg (Mega Language Coach) joins me for a second episode and this time we talk about inclusive language.
Inclusive language is a way of speaking that includes other people and doesn't leave people out based on their ability, gender, personality, or anything else. It's a small shift you can make in your language to sound nicer.
We talk about whether you can say "guys" when talking to girls, the difference between he, she and 'they', and also why people don't often say "police man" anymore.
In the second half of the episode, I challenge Meg to a game to fill in the blanks in common expressions, and I invite you to join in as well.

In this episode, I'll be sharing my experience of the cycle trip, including planning, advice for those who want to take on similar challenges, and sharing useful vocabulary for English learners along the way.
I highly recommend watching the video version on YouTube or Spotify for this episode since I'll be sharing almost 1 hour of footage from my cycling, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while I talk.

Being able to talk about the past naturally in English is really important to sounding natural, and in this episode, we explore the use of "Used to" and "Would", which can both be used to talk about past habits that are no longer true.
There is a small difference between them, and understanding this can make your English sound much more natural.
I explain the difference, and give several examples from my own life to illustrate it. Of course, I invite you to do the same. In the shownotes comments below, leave your own answers.

In Episode 370, we covered a lot of common mistakes that native speakers make in their English, and today is the much requested part 2.
We'll be looking at a few areas or regional dialects, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, that seem to be mistakes in native speaker speech. Some of these are known mistakes and done out of laziness, some of these might be considered a natural part of how language changes and evolves over time.
But the real question is - are any of these okay for learners to make?
We'll be covering all of this in today's episode.

As humans, we all experiences negative emotions from time to time, but most of these feelings aren't too strong. Many of the daily emotions we feel include small levels of irritation or something that makes us a little unhappy for a short time.
It's useful to be able to put a name to these emotions, so today, I'll be sharing a few slightly negative emotions and behaviours, what we can call them, and some stories from my own life when I'm in a bad mood and experience these too.

Have you ever heard a native English speaker make a mistake in their English? Of course no one is perfect and this includes native speakers. There really is no such thing as perfect language and the fact that native speakers will make mistakes can be quite confusing for someone perhaps like you who is trying to learn English, and it's very difficult when you want to fix your own mistakes as a learner, but the native speakers you are trying to copy do not speak perfectly.
That is quite the problem. So if you've ever been confused by something a native speaker has said before, including me perhaps, and you've wondered whether this was actually correct, this is the episode for you.
So in today's episode, I will be talking about common mistakes that native speakers make and discussing perhaps why they make this mistake and whether it's okay for you to do the same.

We cover the importance of story telling, tips on becoming a great story teller, and also give many examples from our own lives to try top practice what we're learning.

I recently learnt that not everyone thinks the same way I do. In fact, there are some areas in which our brains differ greatly. For me, this is a fascinating topic. How do I know the green colour you see, is the same as the green colour I see?
In this episode, I share a few different ways in which our brains are different, and what this might mean for us living our daily lives, and the implications as language learners.
So if you want to learn more about your brain and how it works, listen to this episode, and don't forget to share your own experiences in the comments.

The question I get asked most often these days is "How can I learn English?" and "What's the best way to learn?"
It's clearly a topic that people want to hear about, so my goal today is to finally answer that big question once and for all.
I'll be giving advice to people who know some English, but don't know how to make it a daily practice. And also advice for learners who have been studying for a while, but feel like they don't have a clear aim and are not seeing fast improvements.
I'll talk about questions to ask yourself before getting started, steps you need to take to see improvements in your English learning, and finally, 11 questions to ask if you are studying but not improving as fast as you'd like.

This is the episode I've been excited about for months! In the final episode of the year, I'll be going in detail about what you can do to set goals and become the best version of yourself in 2026.
I'll start by going through my process this year of how you can best do this. It involves writing a review of the good and bad of the previous year, so you can appreciate your successes and think about what could have gone better.
We then talk about planning for the year ahead, and break it apart into categories, and then finally set some actionable habits so you can make progress towards these goals.
I also spend a lot of time sharing personal details from my own review, so you can see what it looks like, and also learn (and laugh) at my mistakes.
Don't forget to click the shownotes link below and use my simple template to write your own review.

This is a continuation of a annual series where I track my language learning progress and draw lessons from the data. The first time was Episode 248, and then again in Episode 306.
If you're like me and you love to get nerdy about data and statistics, then you'll get a lot out of this episode. I break down all the categories of how I've spent my time studying over the last year and take some valuable (and hard-to-accept) lessons from it.
Even if you don't think tracking appeals to you, you can certainly still learn from the lessons in this episode and end feeling more motivated to improve your English.

In this episode, I go through a list of 2nd Conditional questions that encourage me to self reflect and think about how I could improve my life and habits in the new year.
Using this grammar structure is really useful, and I encourage you to answer each question as well.
This is a more casual, chatty episode, so if you actually want to learn about the grammar in more detail, Episode 65 might be more useful.

I just came back from a trip to Japan where I cycled the 80km Shimanami Kaido trail that connects two of the main islands by a group of small islands and bridges. It was a beautiful experience, and in this episode I share an overview of the trip.
You'll hear some funny stories and mistakes, as well as some reflections on language learning and using it in the country while travelling.
It's more of a casual episode, but I hope you like this style.

In this episode, I go through a few funny thoughts, and a few deep and philosophical ones I've gathered and find interesting to think about. Hopefully you'll enjoy hearing them too!

"The more you know, the more you realise you don't know"
This is an example of a well-known proverb (that is so true for language learning too, by the way) and in this episode, we'll be looking at several proverbs, quotes, maxims, and aphorisms that contain some wisdom or rule for living a better life.
We'll be learning a few key terms and also exploring the vocabulary within each proverb, while exploring the meaning and wisdom behind each one.

Sentences that are too short and simple is an issue that all language learners face. We can say what we want, but we don't sound natural because all of our sentences sound like children.
In this episode, we're going to practise extending sentences and making more natural phrases using Relative Clauses. I spend just 5 minutes reviewing the grammar, and then delve into a casual chat where I share my answers to a few questions using these patterns, and I invite you to do the same.

This is an episode I'm excited for because we'll be looking at a group of words that have gone through a similar history; namely, they have all had quite a drastic change in their meanings over time.
Many words we use today in English such as 'terrific' or 'fond' used to have almost completely opposite meanings!
In this episode, I explore why these changes took place, share both the old and new meanings, and give examples from my life for each one. I'll invite you to do the same.

As you may know, politeness in English - especially in British English - is a very important thing. Learners often struggle to keep up with the confusing grammar and long sentences, so in this episode, I break down a few key phrases that you can start using today to make your questions and requests sound more polite.
I go through each phrase one by one and explain how we use it, give an example anecdote from my own life where I could use it, and also end each section with a question to get you thinking.

In this episode, I mix a serious topic with some fun where I talk about my reverse culture shock returning to the UK after one year while trying to answer the question why so many people are deciding to leave the UK and move elsewhere in the world.
Despite being British, seeing my own country from the outside gave me some interesting realisations, so I share a lot of them in today's episode.
This episode might have you thinking about the future and how our countries will look in a few years, but also questioning the habits and culture of your own country.

Inspired by a viral video of a Chinese boy doing his English homework, I thought I'd make an episode where I list 10 common mistakes that language learners make and what you should avoid.
To be clear, I'm sure that boy will master English one day, and my comments were more of a criticism of language education in schools. The video simply reminded me of some of the mistakes I've made along the way.
With that in mind, while I share my 10 habits to avoid, I also give examples when I've done these things in my own life. So let's learn together and see if we can learn more efficiently.

Today we have a conversation between Anna Connelly and me on the topic of overcoming shyness.
This was originally an episode we record on Anna's podcast, Confident Business English, where Anna was mostly interviewing me about my experiences with feeling shy and my tips for the audience. Listening back to this one, I actually felt quite inspired, and I really hope that by re-sharing this today, you'll feel the same too.
We talk about my story with shyness and how it affected me growing up, my rock bottom moment on my first solo-trip abroad, and the steps I took to start building confidence, which also helped me in my language learning.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to cycle through Bangkok?
That's exactly what I'm doing in today's episode. I'm taking the podcast to the streets and I'm riding my bicycle across the city while avoiding stray dogs, and sharing my views on life in Bangkok.
I mostly talk about the things I like and dislike about living here, and some ways in which the UK might be better. I hope you enjoy it!
This was a somewhat experimental episode. Much of the audio had to be cut because of the wind, and all of it had to be edited to make my voice clearer. So sorry about any strange parts in the audio. If you like the idea of these outdoor episodes, let me know and I'll invest in better microphones for next time.

This is an episode I've been planning for a long time and I'm quite excited to share. We'll be looking at the origins of 8 different English words and the deep stories behind them.
Each word originally comes from another language or culture, and it was brought into English through fascinating stories that we'll explore in this episode. These are just a few examples of the countless words that have been adopted into English in a similar way.
For each word, I'll ask a question to the audience to answer too, which gives you a chance to practice and hear my own views.

In today's episode, I share an issue I've been thinking about for a while - finding the balance between speaking up and letting things go.
In other words, when things annoy us or seem unjust, should we speak up and say something? Or should we prioritise our mental health and let it go?

There are many differences in vocabulary between British and American English. Some of these are quite well-known and easy to understand (biscuit and cookie, maybe), but others are a bit more complex.
In today's episode, I'm not simply listing these differences. I'm looking at 8 terms that are different in both British and American English, but aren't quite the same in meaning.
Each term reveals something special about the culture of each country.
Hopefully, this episode will highlight some of the subtle cultural differences in each country, while teaching you new words and ideas.

Alastair Budge from Leonardo English joined me for a casual chat about a variety of different topics.
Alastair has his own podcast called "English Learning for Curious Minds". In it, he covers all sorts of topics from space mining to population decline, while making content that helps English learners improve.
I found this concept so interesting, so I picked a few topics at random to chat about in our conversation today. We also talk about the importance of curiosity.
Today, you'll hear about fascinating inventors, admirable people, population decline, Ozempic, the shadow side, and much more.

We've now done quite a few episodes on Phrasal Verbs, but this is an important one.
Today, I'll be looking at the differences between separable and inseparable phrasal verbs. This is a very important part of English if you want to sound natural and fluent.
As always, I'm not just listing off words in a boring way. I'll be sharing examples of both types while talking about my recent trip to Cambodia, and I also encourage you to make your own examples.

Let's explore the expression "The Grass is Greener on the Other Side".
In English, this is used when we view other situations as better than our own. In fact, no matter what we have, we tend to value what we don't have more.
I explore the meaning of this expression in some detail, examples from my own life, and also some common ways we all experience this along with some ideas on how to overcome the negative sides of this idea.

Zdenek has more than 12 years of experience in various settings, primarily teaching English learners of levels B2-C2. He's taught English in the Czech Republic, UK, Ireland and most recently Vietnam.
Zdenek has also moved to Vietnam, and that's why we were able to meet up nearby in Bangkok for a casual discussion. We speak about moving abroad, learning the local language, habit-building, teaching English, naughty tourists, and much more!
I hope you enjoy this one.

This is a big habit masterclass episode! We'll be diving into the basics of creating habits, how to keep them going without giving up on your goals, and also how to kick some bad habits that are holding you back.
I also give examples of successes and failures based on a lot of my own habit-building experiences.
As you can tell by the length of this episode, this is a topic I'm truly passionate about and something I've been focusing on for my whole adult life.
I really do believe that creating good habits can be one of the key things you can do to start seeing big, positive changes in life and reach your greatest goals. You can use these tips to help achieve your English learning goals, or something else like career goals or financial goals.

Mental Health is something we should all take seriously and I believe there's a lot of crossover between language learning and having a healthy mindset.

You may know that British people are famous for using the word 'sorry' all the time.
In this episode, I talk about this habit and how much truth is behind it, but I also share the different situations in which we would say 'sorry' in the UK - and maybe more generally in the English-speaking world too.
Sorry is so much more than a word used when you make a mistake and it can have many different meanings.
There are also many different ways to apologise and say you're sorry depending on how serious the situation is, so in the second half of this episode, I cover these different phrases.

In my last episode, I spoke about my cycling trip to Taiwan. While there, I had a lot of time alone to think to myself with no distractions. In this episode today, I'm going to share some of the things I was thinking about.
One of these was the idea of Hedonic Adaptation (also known as the Hedonic Treadmill). This is something that we all face as humans and might just be the key to understanding how to be happy and content.
It's a really useful topic when it comes to being happy with what you have and not always feeling bad about what you don't - such as feeling bad for not being good enough at English.
Let's find out more.

I took 2 weeks off in October to ride a bicycle around the whole of Taiwan. It was over 1000km and took about 2 weeks to complete. Along the way, I had both good and bad experiences and there's a lot I'd love to share!
I also filmed a lot of videos of my cycle, so if you'd like to see, you can watch this episode on YouTube - The Level Up English Podcast.
This is perhaps the longest solo episode I've ever recorded, but throughout the episode, I talk about the good and the bad, what I did day by day, how I prepared for the trip, and my experience talking in Chinese with people there.
Along the way, I also mention a lot of useful vocabulary which will be useful for you as English learners. Hope you enjoy!

The Comparison Trap is when we get stuck comparing our lives to other people and feeling worse as a result.
It's a common problem in language learning, and this is something that I often experience too since I was inspired to make this episode after a moment of comparison made me feel worse.
We often compare ourselves to others in many ways, such as income, appearance, skills, and on social media.
In this episode, I cover all of these topics while sharing some useful comparative grammar structures to improve your spoken English.

Curiosity is an important thing to practice to be better English language learners and enjoy your life more.
When we start learning a language, we’re naturally very open and curious to learning new things. It can be an amazing feeling when you’re really into something and you’re looking up every little detail.
However, along the way, we naturally get more complacent and we begin to take things for granted. This curiosity fades into daily habits and routines.
Curiosity makes language learning so much more enjoyable more also helps you progress faster. That’s the idea behind today’s episode.

This is a fun episode where I cover the topic of dreaming in English.
I start by sharing some strange and unbelievable facts about dreams, and then share some of my own wacky dreams and nightmares.
I also go through a couple common dreams that many of us have had and the possible meanings behind each one, while doing so, I make sure to share a new word so hopefully, you'll be able to end this episode having learnt something new.

The 80/20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, suggests that 20% of actions cause 80% of the outcomes.
There are so many ways in which this shows up in life, so I'm going to be discussing it and talking about some ways we can think about this rule to improve our language progress, make our lives more efficient, and increase our level of happiness.

Are you too old to learn English?
Maybe you should have started when you were a child, or still in school?
Well, in this episode I'm responding to this common concern or excuse by giving my opinion on learning a language at an older age, the benefits of learning as a child, and whether you should still make the same effort now.

I'm back with another episode in the series on phrasal verbs. Today, we're looking at around 9 phrasal verbs that include the verb 'set'.
It's a really common one to use and the meanings can get confusing, so I'm going to go through each one and explain the meaning, but also follow up with a story related to my life to give some context to help explain the phrasal verb.

We'll be discussing my terrifying flight experience where it felt like we almost crashed, how to talk about different types of transport and commuting, and then we end with some super useful expressions that are related to transport.

Fabio Cerpelloni chats with me on the podcast today around the topic of his new book: 'Any Language You Want: 18 Conflicting Lessons for a New Kind of Language Learner'.
A collection of contradictory true personal stories in answer to "What's the best way to learn a language?" In each of the 18 chapters, Fabio -- a language learner and teacher -- shares a story about how he mastered English, his second language, and tells you what's the best way to learn another language.
In this episode, we discuss some ways to learn English and why it's not as simple as you might think. I'm sure you'll leave, however, feeling inspired, motivated, and with some new ideas on how to best master this language.

This is the 3rd and final part in our connected speech series, where I look at how spoken English can change the pronunciation of certain words. If you want to speak with a natural British accent, then this is essential to know.
In this episode, I'll be looking at times when the sounds of words change so they become easier to pronounce. I'll be doing this while answering questions and sharing my views on them, and I invite you to join in as well.

Acronyms are words that use the first letter of each word in a phrase. NASA and LOL are two common examples from very different areas.
In the age of the internet, acronyms are now a part of everyday writing and reading, but did you know some are also used in speech?
In this episode, I go through some really common everyday acronyms that you need to know and follow each one with an example from my own life.
I also end with a list of some more casual texting acronyms that are useful when casually writing to friends.

Textbook English is different from spoken English, and a big part of this comes down to pronunciation and how things are said in real conversations.
This is Part 2 in my series on pronunciation, where we first looked at Linking in Episode 255, and now we're looking at Elision. These are both features of connected speech that share some similarities.
In this episode, I share an example of elision followed by a question or challenge for myself that I also ask you (the listeners) to do as well!

I get a few requests to continue my series on Phrasal Verbs, and specifically, I had one recently to cover phrasal verbs that use the verb 'turn'.
I thought of as many common ones as I could and made a list, and then I went through my memories to recount some memorable travel stories from my life. While doing so, I used these 'turn' phrasal verbs in a natural context.
I encourage you to do the same too! Practice like this is the best way to learn.

We also spoke for a long time about travel, language learning, and self-improvement, but this was cut out of the episode. I'm posting the full conversation on the website for members. Click below to join!

I'll be basing this episode around a group class I taught before where we discuss some questions related to relationships, such as having a long and happy marriage, and how to break up with someone.
I also have the help of Chat GPT who gives some brilliant advice for all relationships out there. There will also be a few phrases you can use to talk about relationships . I'm sure at least one will be new for you.

Bree Aesie from Into The Stories Podcast joins us today for a conversation about meditation and stories. This was one of my favourite conversations yet, packed with lots of life lessons as well as English learning tips and motivation.
Since Bree's podcast is all about looking at stories, we start by turning the tables on Bree and I ask her to share a meaningful story for her. We talk about her 10-day silent meditation retreat in Thailand and some of the difficulties and lessons from that experience.
We delve into topics around meditation and mindfulness, and also why learning a language through stories is such a powerful and effective method.
By the way, I also appeared on Bree's podcast! You can listen to our episode here where I talk about a challenging and personal experience in my 20s.

You may understand English learner material easily, but then really struggle when it comes to watching TV or movies. What I discuss in this episode may be the reason why.
This is the first part of a series I’m going to do on pronunciation, and this episode will be about something called Linking.
Linking is when a consonant sound connects from the end of one word to the beginning of the next word. Listen to find out more!

Let's look at some conjunctions (also known as connectives) to help improve your conversation and debating skills in English.
Conjunctions are an effective way to make your sentences more complex and sound much more natural - rather than simply using a string of short, simple sentences. We'll also be looking at more phrases, such as adverbs.
In this episode, I share them in a natural way while sharing my own opinions on some controversial and interesting debate topics. Can you share your own views on the topics using these conjunctions in the comments on the show notes page below?

Welcome back to one of my favourite episodes of the year - one filled with reflections and goal-setting at the end of the year.
I love this time of year because it's a natural rest point for thinking about how the previous year has gone, and what we'd like to change going forward.
It's a great time to think about your goals and progress with your English learning, but also other areas too and consider what you want to get out of the next year, and your life!
Join me in a slightly longer episode as we explore the topics of Successes and Struggles from the previous year, as well as different goals and plans for the next year.

I am a big fan of reading for the purpose of learning a language as well, of course as listening, which is why I make podcasts. If you want to improve both of your listening and reading as well as your vocabulary, then this should be a good resource for you today.
In today’s episode, Ariel Goodbody will tell you a story, but pre-teach some of the harder vocabulary first. This is a crosspost episode where Ariel shared one of my episodes on their podcast, and I am sharing a story I enjoyed from Ariel's podcast.
It's something a little different, so I hope you enjoy it! Connect with Ariel or me below.

In this episode, I will be talking about the IELTS Speaking exam.
I know the IELTS exam isn't going to be relevant for everyone, although I always like to mention that preparing for the exam can also be great practice for English in a general sense. I'm sure those who have taken the exam before will agree that their English improved during the process. So even if you're not taking the exam, I really hope this episode will be useful for you in some way.
Since the beginning of this podcast, one of my main reasons, for making content was based on listener questions. I realised I would get the same questions again and again, and rather than trying to write out messages to reply to each one. I thought it would be much better for both me and the person asking the question if I could put all of my advice into one episode.
So the goal of this episode is to make the ultimate guide to IELTS speaking.

Over the years doing this podcast, the topic of exercise seems to have come up a lot when making comparisons to language learning, so I thought it was about time I made an episode where I talk all about it.
In this episode, I talk about exercise and some of the benefits, teach you some useful expressions, and make some links on how exercise and language learning are similar and benefit you in the same ways.

I get comments occasionally from people who say “I want to be like a native speaker” and “I don’t want to learn from non-native speakers.
In this episode, I'll argue the benefits of learning from non-native speakers as well as natives, and not closing yourself off from learning. The main thesis here is to stay open-minded in language learning and I explore some reasons why.
I cover some ways in which non-native speakers might be preferable to native speakers, and even when they're not, the things you can learn from them.
I hope you find this episode valuable. As always, you can share your thoughts on the show notes page below.

I’ve been living in Bangkok, Thailand since the beginning of August, so it’s been over 2 months now. This is the longest I’ve spent in one place outside of my home country before. One of our group class students requested an episode sharing my thoughts and experiences after moving here, and I decided to give it a go.
In this episode, I’ll be talking about what’s changed here and some big differences I’ve noticed between the UK and Thailand. I’ll be sharing the good and the bad, things I miss and things I prefer here. I’ll also be talking about moving abroad and relocating more generally and will mention some useful vocabulary related to this topic.

Memory is something we've covered a few times on the podcast before, but it's always worth coming back to with more ideas and tips.
In this episode, I share advice on how you can stop forgetting English vocabulary, 2 methods of learning new vocabulary that suit all types of learners and personality types, expressions related to memory and forgetting, and at the end I give some advice on general memory and forgetfulness.
I think there's a lot of value packed into this episode so listen carefully and I'm sure you'll take away something valuable.

Cara Leopold (Leo Listening) joins me once again on the podcast to discuss the benefits of learning English in groups with her experience teaching group classes based around movies, as well as some good movies and TV series she likes to use to practice and teach English.
If you've caught this episode in 2023, Cara is relaunching her Movie Club course. You can try it out for one week in September to see if you like it. We talk more about this in the episode too

Cara Leopold is the creator of the Leo Listening Movie Club where she helps film-loving English learners understand and discuss movies together so they can master conversational English.
From September 13th-20th Cara is organising the Back-to-School Movie Challenge, a 1-week taste of what it's like to be in a movie club. By watching and discussing clips from high school movies together, you’ll learn new vocabulary, catch fast-spoken English and practice your speaking and writing skills with other movie-loving English learners. The challenge includes access to a discussion forum as well as a live Zoom session on September 20th to chat with me and other film lovers about the movie clips.

In this episode, we'll be talking about some patterns you can remember when adding UP to verbs.
Here are some examples: cloud up, clear up, finish up, drink up, break up
One of the Level Up Members recently asked about the difficult part of phrasal verbs where we add ‘up’ to a verb and why we do this. I decided to make an entire episode about it because it’s not an easy thing to get your head around. Part 1 was Episode 224.
I decided to stop the episode halfway because 1 hour of listing phrasal verbs might be a tad boring. So let's finish up the patterns in today's episode.
I will add a complete lesson on Level Up English with a quiz and subtitles to help you understand. If you want to access this as well as join a global learner community to get access to all transcripts, group lessons, and many more courses.

I had a great audio question sent in today about learning with comprehensible input. So in this episode, I cover some of the ideas behind the comprehensible input method, and then explore the input hypothesis from Stephen Krashen and how these ideas might benefit your language learning methods.

I got a question about adding "UP" to certain verbs and this learner wanted to know more. As I did more research, I was plunged into a rabbit hole of research and it turned out to be much more complicated than I first realised! I decided to try to tackle this topic in a podcast episode.

I see a lot of writing mistakes with learners struggling with parallel structures, or parallelism. This is where features in a sentence have to follow the same grammatical patterns to sound natural.
It may sound a bit confusing, but honestly, it's fairly simple once you understand the main idea.

As you might know, English isn't like how we find it in textbooks. In day-to-day conversations, we often don't speak in full sentences, and so much of what we say is implied (this means, it's hinted at without actually saying it).

I spoke about 14 TV shows to improve your British English in episode 22 of the podcast.
Since then, I've got a lot of requests to make a Part 2. To be honest, I don't watch much TV so I struggle to make a good list. Of the TV series I do watch, many of them aren't good examples of British English (or even English in general, such as 'Vikings'!)
My general advice is, rather than watching something that will improve your English, just watch something that you enjoy. Enjoyment should always come first.
Having said that, if you're not sure where to start, here are some ideas that you may enjoy.

Job interviews are generally quite terrifying. The one thing that can make them worse is having an interview in a second language!
First of all, there’s the fear of making grammatical and pronunciation mistakes. And there’s also the issue of knowing what questions to prepare for as these can be different from country to country.
In this podcast, we’re going to cover all of these problems so you can feel confident for your next interview.

Text:
When I was first learning to meditate, the instruction was to simply pay attention to my breath, and when my mind wandered, to bring it back.
Why is it so hard to pay attention? Well, studies show that even when we’re really trying to pay attention to something — like maybe this talk — at some point, about half of us will drift off into a daydream, or have this urge to check our Twitter feed.
Instead of this hunger signal coming from our stomach, this emotional signal — feeling sad — triggers that urge to eat.
What if instead of fighting our brains, or trying to force ourselves to pay attention, we instead tapped into this natural, reward-based learning process?
And this is what mindfulness is all about: Seeing really clearly what we get when we get caught up in our behaviours.
We start to notice that cravings are simply made up of body sensations — oh, there’s tightness, there’s tension, there’s restlessness.
Word MeaningsMind-wandering - to think about past memories or future worries
Drift off - To float away gently (a boat, your mind...)
Urge - The strong feeling of desire to do something without thought
Trigger - Something that causes something else to happen
To tap into - To find the hidden ability inside yourself or something else
To get caught up in - To get distracting by doing something
To crave - When your body wants something
Restlessness - The feeling of being impatient and unable to stay still

Expression of Today: Turophobia - is the fear of what?
Muhammed asked on Facebook
“Why are there some letters that we don’t pronounce?”
For example: Know, Listen, Often, Neighbour
**29% of English is French (France was the main language after the 1066 invasion for 600 years)
Examples of French words:** Beef, Pork, Pastry, Salad, Portrait, Capitalism, Camoflague
26% of English is from Germanic languages (including Old English, Old Norse and Dutch)
* Old Norse words are often concrete nouns, things we can feel. They often have hard consonants, such as "dirt, gun, club"
* Words with silent Ks usually come from Old Norse and the K used to be pronounced. Over time, the pronunciation changed but the spelling remained the same.
* In Old English, the E used to be pronounced. "Bite" used to have two syllables.
6% of English comes from Greek - it’s a very old language and supposedly the first to use an alphabet with vowels (AEIOU) and consonants (BCDFG).
* Philosophy (pronounced like "FILO..")
* Phobia (something you’re scared of)
English also likes to borrow words from other languages.Tsunami, karate (Japanese)
Caravan (Persian-->French-->English)
Know - Comes from old English. The K has stopped being pronounced.
Listen - Also form Germanic languages. The T is quite hard to say so probably why it stopped
Often - Middle English - Can be pronounced both ways
Neighbour - Old English - from nēah ‘nigh, near’ + gebūr ‘inhabitant, peasant, farmer’
Game of Thrones Expressions
"Lady of Winterfell, [it] has a nice ring to it"If something "has a nice ring" that means it sounds good or is pleasing to the ear.
"Sir John? That has a nice ring to it"
"It had its moments"This means that an event was not completely boring or terrible. Some parts were fun or interesting.
"The party last night had its moments"
"I’m sure you weren’t thrilled to hear the Lannister armies are marching North."
To be thrilled means to be happy about something.
"I'm sure you weren't thrilled to see it's raining today."

English is useful whether you’re travelling to an English country or another country where you don’t know the language since most people know some level of English.
If you’re learning English then you are lucky! You can use English in any country (if I do it people will think I’m lazy)
How your travel will be different if you know the language
* Meet new people
* Learn about history
* Read a restaurant menu
* Avoid misunderstandings
* Learn about the culture
It’s useful to remember a few structures that you can add in your own words to change the meaning.
* I have no idea (where I am, what to order, etc)
* Is there anything you’d recommend doing/eating?
* Talk about the weather
+ It’s boiling today, isn’t it?
+ It’s freezing! (British love exaggerating)
+ It’s tipping it down
+ It’s a bit drizzly
A teacher can help you with any mistakes or serious pronunciation issues you have before the trip.
Think about what you’d like to do on holiday and visit the websites or read about it. Then study the language.
British politeness ( don't be direct)
* I would like (use when asking other people) / I want (use when talking to yourself)
* Please, could I have...
* Would you mind if...
* Always say please, sorry and thank you!
The good thing about travel is that you can make a fool of yourself and no one will ever see you again!
*Ask people questions even when you know the answer - just to practice!
My advice for visiting the UK: Get out of the cities and see the countryside.
Don’t worry if you’re not as good as you think. Most people find language is harder when they actually go to the country - just like I did in Japan.
Expression: Do you have itchy feet?

How to Learn British Pronunciation
Introduction
British accents have a few things in common which we’ll look at later
General Advice
Specific Advice
Learn stress
I recommend https://forvo.com/ for pronunciation and https://www.merriam-webster.com/ for a dictionary.
Specific Sounds
American vs British
I recommend this poem called The Chaos by Gerard Nolst Trenité
This poem shows the irregularities in English pronunciation. Try it for fun! It's very difficult though.
Recap: Having an imperfect accent isn’t the end of the world. We each have our own and should be proud of it. However, there's nothing wrong with wanting to improve, so I hope this helped.

Hello and welcome to The English With Michael Podcast: The best place to come to study English as a Second Language, as well as to practice the British accent, with me - Michael Lavers - as your teacher.
Hello and welcome to the first-ever episode of the English With Michael Podcast.
This is an introductory episode so I thought I could take some time to tell you about who I am and what to expect from this podcast.
So my name is Michael Lavers. I'm an online ESL teacher - that is, people learning English as a Second Language.
I'm from a city called Plymouth in the United Kingdom.
I have taught thousands of lessons online with students from all around the world, all difference countries, from ages 4 to 80.
But maybe we could talk about why I want to make a podcast.
I love helping people improve their English, but, there's only so much I can do in one day. I have a lot of questions online, on my website, on social media, asking for help, but unfortunately I can't help everyone.
So I thought a podcast would be a great way to reach more people and, hopefully, help people improve their English, and also British English.
I love podcasts! I listen to several hours of podcasts every day, so I think it's a really good way to learn no matter how busy you are.
I'm really passionate about helping people and I think podcasts are a good way to do that.
So let's talk about what you can expect in this podcast.A usual episode might include me:
Each podcast: the full transcript, along with the podcast notes and all the resources will be available on my website at ewmichael.com/podcast
If you have any questions for me that you'd like me to answer, or any ideas for future episodes, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer.
So thank you vert much for coming to check out my podcast and I'm looking forward to learning together.
