Beloved is a UK based women's ministry inspired by the Song of Songs in the Bible. We aim to help women to come to know, as it says in chapter 7 verse 10 “ I am my Beloved's and His desire is for me.” This podcast is an opportunity to retreat in daily life, in fellowship with other women on the journey, in worship, in conversation and in prayer.

In this episode Anna is joined by Alice and Iffa as we ask: “who helps me to live in the Gaze of God?”

Scriptures John 20: 11-18 1 Corinthians 13:12 1 John 3:2

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE Have a look at the image linked in today’s show notes. Imagine that you are stood with the women and Jesus. How would you feel knowing that you are seen and known by the Lord Jesus? How does it feel to be in His company?

GAZED UPON Who, in your life, helps you to live in the gaze of God?

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on the Scripture that you heard in the podcast today (John 20:11-18). What word or phrase stands out to you in particular? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase or these Scriptures as a whole?

Image In our conversation we reflected on this image from the TV show The Chosen. https://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=https://www.amfm-magazine.tv/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/2021_JULY_THE_CHOSEN_972x510.png&imgrefurl=https://www.amfm-magazine.tv/the-chosen-jonathan-roumie-jesus-and-elizabeth-tabish-mary-magdalene-give-us-an-idea-why-this-record-breaking-crowdfunded-series-is-a-runaway-success/&tbnid=xOCKbWyi1Pj31M&vet=1&docid=RYFwPycbddZmcM&w=972&h=510&hl=en-gb&source=sh/x/im

Find out more about this amazing TV show here https://watch.angelstudios.com/thechosen

We also considered this quote from Jaques Philipe

"Only under the gaze of God can we fully and truly accept ourselves. We need to be looked upon by someone who says, as God did through the prophet Isaiah: “You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” .... We urgently need the mediation of another’s eyes to love ourselves and accept ourselves. The eyes may be those of a parent, a friend, a spiritual director; but above all they are those of God our Father. The look in his eyes is the purest, truest, tenderest, most loving, and most hope-filled in this world. The greatest gift given those who seek God’s face by persevering in prayer may be that one day they will perceive something of this divine look upon themselves; they will feel themselves loved so tenderly that they will receive the grace of accepting themselves in depth."

In this episode Iffa Willis is joined by Pippa Baker and Anna Bailey as we ask: “can we meet His gaze?”

Scripture Luke 22: 54-62

Image In our conversation we reflected on two images:

Denial of Peter by Carl Bloch

https://moastore.byu.edu/product/the-denial-of-peter/

and

Christ of St John of the Cross by Salvador Dali

https://www.dalipaintings.com/christ-of-saint-john-of-the-cross.jsp

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE Have a look at the two images linked in today’s show notes. Gaze upon them as you pray. What do you see? What do you notice? If you were to be painted into the scenes, where would you be?

GAZED UPON Can you recall times when you have felt guilt or shame and have not been able to look someone in the eye? Who in your life has gazed on you and loved you even when they know the truth about your weaknesses and failings?

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on the accounts from Holy Week that you have heard in the podcast today (Luke 22: 54-62 and John 19:25). What word or phrase stands out to you in particularly? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase or these Scriptures as a whole?

Quote from St John of the Cross

In the first place it should be known that if a person is seeking God, his Beloved is seeking him much more.

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE Can you make time this Lent to go to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament to gaze upon the Lord? Or perhaps you have a crucifix you can use as a focus your prayer at home. In that place of intimacy with the Lord, like the woman in the Gospel, take time to tell Jesus ‘the whole truth’, knowing that His gaze and His response to you will always be full of love.

GAZED UPON What are some of the situations you find yourself in where you feel very self conscious and concerned about the judgement of others? Take time to speak to the Lord about these situations.

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on the account of Jesus’ Encounter with the Haemorrhaging Woman (Mark 5:25-34). What word or phrase stands out to you in particularly? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase or this Scripture as a whole?

Quotes from Popes

https://www.vatican.va/content/benedict-xvi/en/speeches/2009/november/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20091121_artisti.html

“Beauty can become a path towards the transcendent, towards the ultimate mystery; towards God” Pope Benedict 16 2009

“Too often the beauty thrust upon us is illusory and deceitful, it imprisons man within himself and further enslaves him; depriving him of hope & joy” Pope Benedict 16 2009

https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/homilies/2020/documents/papa-francesco_20200201_omelia-vitaconsacrata.html

“There is always the temptation to have a worldly gaze, one devoid of hope. But let us look to the Gospel and see Simeon and Anna: they were elderly, alone, yet they had not lost hope, because they remained in communion with the Lord. Anna “did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day” (v. 37). Here is the secret: never to alienate oneself from the Lord, who is the source of hope. We become blind if we do not look to the Lord every day, if we do not adore him. To adore the Lord.

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE What are you fascinated by? What am I giving my attention to? What takes your gaze away from the Lord? What helps you to gaze upon the Lord? Why is my gaze on this thing that fascinates me?

GAZED UPON When people encounter you, what do you think they’ll notice about what you’re fascinated by?

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on the account of Jesus’ Presentation at the Temple (Luke 2:22-40). What word or phrase stands out to you in particularly? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase or this Scripture as a whole?

Quoted antiphon from Christmas Matins Latin text O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, iacentem in praesepio! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Iesum Christum. Alleluia!

See our Spotify playlist for two different settings of this antiphon to listen to.

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE Have you had a moment to gaze at the nativity scene this Christmas? Take some time to pause and gaze, whether that’s at the crib at your church or in your home, or simply on a Christmas card you’ve received or one of the images in the show notes.

GAZED UPON In the podcast The Five Love Languages we’re discussed. Do you know what your Love Language is? (You can find out more here - insert website) Is this one of the ways that you experience God loving you? If not, perhaps consider what it might look like for God to speak your Love Language. Take time to reflect on the times when you have felt most loved by the people in your life. What Love Language were they ‘speaking’?

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on the account of Jesus’ nativity in the Gospels of Luke (2:1-20) and Matthew (2:1-12) What word or phrase stands out to you in particularly? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase or this Scripture as a whole?

Beginning a new season of the Beloved Podcast, Alice Hall, Iffa Willis and Anna Bailey begin unpacking what it means to live in the gaze of God.

Quote from John Paul II’s letter Dies Domini “It would be banal to interpret God's "rest" as a kind of divine "inactivity". By its nature, the creative act which founds the world is unceasing and God is always at work, as Jesus himself declares in speaking of the Sabbath precept: "My Father is working still, and I am working" (Jn 5:17). The divine rest of the seventh day does not allude to an inactive God, but emphasizes the fullness of what has been accomplished. It speaks, as it were, of God's lingering before the "very good" work (Gn 1:31) which his hand has wrought, in order to cast upon it a gaze full of joyous delight. This is a "contemplative" gaze which does not look to new accomplishments but enjoys the beauty of what has already been achieved. It is a gaze which God casts upon all things, but in a special way upon man, the crown of creation. It is a gaze which already discloses something of the nuptial shape of the relationship which God wants to establish with the creature made in his own image, by calling that creature to enter a pact of love.”

Journaling Prompts PAUSE to GAZE This week, when can you pause amidst your preparations for Christmas and allow yourself to meet God’s gaze? Is it possible for you to go to Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and gaze upon the Lord there?

GAZED UPON Can you identify times when you have felt really seen and known by humans or by the Lord?

GAZING ON THE WORD Spend some time reflecting on Psalm 139. What word or phrase stands out to you in particularly? What might God be trying to say to you through this word or phrase?

Episode 14 Pentecost Iffa and Alice join forces, and share conversation with Allegra about God’s transformational power of the Holy Spirit and on Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit. We take for our scriptures today Luke 1:34-35 and Acts 1:14, 2:1-4.

Journalling Prompts

  1. Can you recognise the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit in your life? Spend a moment pondering the Holy Spirit’s influence in your journey.
  2. Do you ever hold back from knowing or surrendering more to the Holy Spirit? If so, do you know why - have you had fear or is something else holding you back?
  3. How can you foster a disposition of openness to the Holy Spirit and His gifts? How do you want to grow more in your relationship with the Holy Spirit?
  4. Ask Mary to pray for you specifically in the areas you have identified... perhaps pray with the image in the link below.

Alice speaks to Marianna Miller and Susan Walsh about God’s power to transform by bringing us freedom through healing and deliverance.

The readings this week touch on the story of a Tobias and Sarah from the book of Tobit 3:16-17b; 7:17 and the women who followed Jesus from Luke 8:1-3.

During the conversation a few ministries and books were mentioned:

Unbound: A practical guide to deliverance by Neal Lozano, Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard, The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis, Little Way Healing Ministry: https://littlewayhealingministries.com , Heart of the Father Ministries: https://www.heartofthefather.com , Unbound Prayer UK: https://www.unboundprayer.com , Pentecost Novena: http://www.burningbushinitiative.com/english/pentecostnovena.htm

Journalling Prompts:

We heard some stories of God healing and bringing freedom. Can you recall any ways in which God has set you free and brought healing in your life? Spend some time thanking Him for His power at work in you.

Marianna spoke about the impact life events can have on our body, soul and spirit. Can you identify times in your life that have affected you spiritually, emotionally or psychologically that you might need healing from?

Are there any areas in your life where you feel stuck? Or can you recognise reactions or responses that you have that are either repetitive, negative or overreactive?

Invite the Lord to come and work in you in these areas. Give Him permission to reveal the roots of the problem and pray for a way to come out of this place. Ask Him to lead and guide you.

We recommend reading the book Unbound to help you journey into deeper freedom in your life and for a practical model of prayer that you can help others with.

Send us your questions for our Bonus Episode!

We are planning a Q&A bonus Episode which will be released on the feast of the Sacred Heart - we plan to answer any questions you may have and let you know more about the Beloved ministry. We would love to hear from you any thoughts or questions you have had listening to the last 2 seasons of the Beloved Podcast. Alice talks with Pella, a friend from her University days and Marianna Gol, a Messianic Jewish believer from Israel about the Beloved’s desire for Unity and God’s power to overcome division.

The readings this week are from Ruth 1:16 and the encounter with the Canaanite Woman in Matthew 15:24-28.

Journalling Prompts:

How would you describe yourself to a person who doesn’t know you? What makes up your identity? Are you comfortable with the ‘labels/boxes’ others or you use to describe who you are?

Marianna spoke about how the place of tension can be a place of growth. In what way have you experienced this in your life? Are there any ways in which God is stretching you in this way at the moment?

What are your thoughts/feelings/attitudes towards believers of different backgrounds to your own?

Is there anyone at this time with whom you are at odds? Place them and the situation into God’s hands through prayer and step into the truth that nothing is impossible to God. (Luke 1:37)

Read John 17:21 and take time to reflect on Jesus’ prayer. What is your response? How can you help the Lord in this desire of His? Pray with these thoughts and ideas and ask Jesus to speak His truth to you in this area.

Iffa talks to Jenny Lochner and Kathy Ball, and we also hear from Marita Gramstadt de Restrepo about God’s power to heal.

Miriam (Numbers 12: 10b, 13-15) and the haemorrhaging woman (Mark 15: 25-29).

Journaling prompts

  1. Take a moment to become still. How do you feel right now - physically? Emotionally? However you are feeling, share this with the Lord.

  2. Have you had an experience of being healed by conventional means? You may like to thank God now for the skill and dedication of those working in the medical profession.

  3. Reflect on whether there have been times in your life when you struggled to cope with a physical condition, or maybe you are struggling now. Can you surrender any anxiety or pain to your loving Father and pray for him to give you whatever he sees that you need?

  4. Take a moment to reflect on the wonder of your body, so marvellously created when God ‘knitted you together in your mother’s womb.’ Give thanks for the miracle of life and the healing power of God to cure our ills.

On Divine Mercy Sunday, Alice talks to Cathy Adkins and Violeta Cipkute about the transforming power of God's mercy.

Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12: 24-25) and Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman (John 8: 9b-11)

Journaling prompts

What in your life have you experienced that stops you from receiving God’s love or growing deeper in your faith and relationship with Him?

Do you struggle in any way with fear, guilt or condemnation? Bring these feelings to Jesus as you pray today and ask Him to transform them for you.

Have you experienced God’s love and mercy in a tangible way you can recall and thank God for? Perhaps ask God if there is someone in your life who might be blessed by hearing you share this experience.

Read through 2 Samuel 11 and 12 and John 8:1-11. Take one of these stories into prayer and imagine yourself in the place of one of these women and hear what God wants to say to you through His word.

Can you recognise either rebellion or resignation rather than a fully consensual ‘Yes’ to who God is calling You to be at this time? (Book Recommendation: Interior Freedom by Jacques Philippe)
