Let’s Talk Homeschool is a podcast hosted by Davis and Rachael Carman. They have been homeschooling their seven kids since 1996. As of 2022, all seven have graduated from their family homeschool and are in college or have already graduated. IOW, by God's grace, this adventure of a lifetime — called home education — has been very good for their family. They believe if there was ever a time to homeschool, it is now!

A large number of families have opted out of public school, which we believe is good. Many parents made a decision to send their kids to private school. But here’s the deal. Private schools rely on brick-and-mortar buildings to provide classroom space. And this is a limited commodity with a very real cap. In other words, private schools can only accept so many new students before they must stop enrollment. The result is that waiting lists at private schools have skyrocketed. When you decide to homeschool, you won't be on a waiting list.

Do you even remember what your opinion on vaccines was prior to COVID? In this show, we take you back to June of 2019 when the New York City school system removed the provision for religious exemption with regard to vaccines. Then we recount the 2020-2021 school year, which was a complete disaster. Schools developed a COVID response plan that included tase masks, social distancing, plastic barriers, and online teaching. All these requirements were totally impractical for the millions of K-12 students still in the system. What do parents want in tough times as well as "normal" times? We attempt to answer this important question.

This is the second in a four-part series where we are asking what's good, missing, broken, and evil in our culture. In this episode we focus on what is missing in culture that we can creatively contribute. We share three things that we believe are missing. These are things we also believe are possible for Christians and homeschooling families to add or contribute to the culture of our families, churches, and communities.
Americans tend to like things to be quick and easy. This certainly applies to meals (think microwaves, cereal, and "instant" oatmeal). What about homeschooling? Does the realization that educating your kids at home will be long and hard strengthen your resolve to stick with it? We certainly want you to persevere because the sacrifices are well worth it.

On May 23, 2021, Eric Carle passed away after a lifetime of achievements spanning 91 years. He is best known for his illustrated children’s books including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle is quoted as saying that he attempted to “…bridge the gap between the home and school...home represents...warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child…I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases, we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown…” Wow. I couldn't agree more. And what a pro homeschool statement.

The homeschool market doubled from 2019 to 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic was largely the reason for this significant demographic shift. Will all the newbies be one and done? Our family loves butterflies. We have had a butterfly bush in our yard for 15+ years, and it definite attracts the butterflies. Several years ago, Rachael planted some milkweed, and eventually raised some Monarch butterflies. That was such an exciting project, that we turned a whole section of our front yard into a bonifide butterfly garden complete with milkweed, butterfly bushes, and more. Now every August and September, Rachael leads our family on a wonderful adventure of raising butterflies from eggs to caterpillars to chrysalises to butterflies. It’s a glorious journey from start to finish. And it’s a great way to start each new homeschool year. In this episode, Rachael shares some details so that you can do the same.

It’s so hard that some parents essentially throw in the towel and let it happen to them rather than taking the bull by the horns and being proactive and intentional. It may seem easier, but trust us. You really don’t want to be a random, whatever kind of parent. In this episode, we talk about Discipline. What practical advise would you give to a parent who wants to break their child’s will without breaking their spirit. How can we get to their heart and not just their behavior? We found ourselves listening to many of these families and answering their questions about how to make this an adventure that is positive, good, productive, and exciting.
