Hi all, So I have thought about doing a modern soul special for a while and it has now happened.

As well as playing music that I love a couple of days before the show I had the idea of sharing knowledge of how the genre started, the time lines and who first coined the term modern soul. I started to do some research and quickly realised it was not well documented. Rather than just leave it I pushed on and decide to reach out to some key figures to ask their opinion on it. I did not manage to get a definitive answer although a lot of the same people where discussed. In hindsight I should have done this many weeks or even months before but as I had already advertised the special it had to go ahead. At this point I would like to thank those that I did speak too namely, Andy Davies, Bob Jeffries, Arthur Fenn, Yogi Haughton, Dave Thorley and Steve Guarnori. Some very interesting phone calls happened and I am still in the mindset of talking to more and attempting to document it.

Below is the show recording, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

As most of you are aware Andy Ward started the Vocal Booth Radio station some time ago and recently held a gathering for all the DJ’s and listeners at the Hockley Social Club in Birmingham. It was a wonderful day and a great chance to meet many of the stations DJ’s face to face, many of us know each other already but great to meet those that we never had before. the main focus was the terrace but also a few of us played in the larger warehouse area selecting music while people had food and chatted.

I was one of the 4 or 5 dj’s that played the warehouse and here is the recording. a lot of soul and a splash of reggae but think mellow, downtempo vibes as background music. Its a nice listen if I don’t say so myself

This months show I randomly selected album cuts working my from the top left of my record collection. Mostly soul music found its way into my fingers but also a smidge of disco and reggae. I enjoyed this one as many of the tracks I had not played in a long time. Hope you enjoy it too.

I am sure you are all aware through my socials that I currently have a new track released. However I feel compelled to put pen to paper and give some back story and words of thanks. I don’t make music very often but once in a while when the mood takes I get creative, sometimes something happens sometimes not. Synchronised Feels was one of those times it happened. I actually created this one over a year ago but felt it lacked something. I looked through some other projects and found some live percussion in a track that myself and Julian Bendall had been working on. It fitted perfectly and gave it that extra edge that was lacking. After checking with Julian that he was OK for me to use it it was game on. Some extra musicality and a top line I felt was required so we reached out to a few people which unfortunately did not hit the mark. I the contacted my friend Jamie 3:26 to see if he had a keyboard player he could recomend. Turns out his studio partner Danou P was available, Jamie hooked me up. Danou after a call did several takes and sounds and absolutely hit the mark. Totally understood the vibe and delivered. The guy is a pro and brilliant to work with. After messing with the parts he supplied in various ways I found a sweet spot and played my version on radio and at a few club nights and it was received well. I had already been working with Lee from HouseHead London so passed it his way and he liked it enough to consider a release. I generally send my work to only a couple of key people, Craig Smith being one of those. He called me to say it had a vibe and he would like to remix it. Of course I have huge respect for Craig so felt very honoured he would ask. Some time passed and Craig sent an early draft. I was blown away by what he did and the energy he injected. he did a few tweaks and additions refining his vision. The end result was stunning! Obviously the label loved it too and we decided to release Craigs mix on its own (My original will come later in the year) Although I knew Craigs mix was special I did not expect a Deep House track to be so well received, multiple charts on Traxsource from the likes of Atjazz, Groove Assassin and Risk Assesment, DJ Mixes etc followed along side Abel, Jamie and of Course Craig all playing it at the Southport Weekender. So as you can see, it took many to create this and would be wrong for me not to credit and give thanks to all those that helped in any way to bring this one to life.

Super proud and grateful for the connection I have made and what they have done!

You can find the release here – https://www.traxsource.com/track/13249380/synchronized-feels-craig-smith-remix

2024 saw the end of an era as the home of my Radio show Pressure Radio closed its doors after decades. Andy Ward picked up the torch and created Vocal Booth Radio the station with over 90 DJ’s on rotation. Launching on Jan 1st 2025 my first show was on launch day. I must say its all come together very nicely and was an absolute pleasure to have a show on day one.

My 1st show was recorded and you can listen back to it below

One or twice a year a promoter asks me to play and states you have a free hand to play whatever you want across the board. The Get Down in Edinburgh was one of these. Add to that an absolutely fantastic crowd that truly know the music and went with all the directions I went made this party very special. The energy at the end was crazy! The set was not recorded however after a ridiculous amount of positive feedback on the night I decided to recreate the set for all those that attended.

Many thanks to Paul, Richard and the entire Get Down team

Enjoy reliving the vibe, stream, download or subscribe to the podcast.

Hi I was putting together some music for my 2 x 5 hours sets in Ibiza in a couple of weeks, got carried away did mix and hit record. 3 hours of the flavour I play in the wonderful streets of the old town. A little underground but also some obvious and maybe even commercial! When I first did this party a few years ago I fast realised I needed to adjust my usual sound and hated the thought of that but honestly it is now one of the highlights of my DJ year. Ibiza, Old Town, 2 x 5 hour sets, amazing vibe, people and energy, yes please! Mixing on this one is sloppy in places but I am never one for re-records this is me warts and all! Enjoy

Hi all lost of posts here this week, lots for me to be excited about.

it has been a year since I have released any new music of my own so I am super excited to announce I have been signed as an artist to the Househead London label and my first “EP” the Danger Table is now on Traxsource for pre order.

3 tracks that all have a story attached especially when it comes to some of the titles. Those are certainly stories to be explained over a beer or rum.

I have already had some amazing feedback from my peers and someone made the crazy comparison that one of the tracks sounded like Phil Asher! Can you spot which one that might be? To me that is a mad comment to make but also super proud that someone would think and say as such.

You can check the release here https://www.traxsource.com/title/2251569/the-danger-table

I sit here with tears in my eyes and felt an overpowering urge to put pen to paper (virtually)

I have mentioned many times in interviews that Max Rees played an integral part in introducing me to soul music and shaping my musical taste, I first met Max in the late 80’s through his Cambridge record shop Hot Numbers. It was an amazing place, i proper messy unorganised gold mine of all things vinyl (Thats RECORDS to you and me) I visited regularly digging though piles of music while he placed various pieces on the turntable for my attention. After being a regular for many years I was given access to the basement. Again an unorganised mess but a crate diggers heaven. We formed a friendship and on may occasion was asked to keep an eye on things while he popped out.

Eventually we started attending Soul events together and as Max did not drive I often took the helm travelling to soul events, all dayers and weekenders together. He introduced me to the likes of the Southport Weekender, The Norfolk Village, Bump N Hustle, The Bull in Royston, Frames, Boat party’s on the Norfolk broads, Essex Soul All Dayers and much more.

Anyone that attended the Southport Weekender back in the day at the original venue will know, when you arrived and walked in the first thing you would see was Max on his record stall which was located in the main venue as soon as you entered. Myself and a few other Cambridge, local lads worked for many a happy year on the stall. It was a meeting place for many and as such we where introduced to many people such as Frosty, Sean French, Mark Webster, Gary Dennis, all of which hung out at the stall for many an hour.

Put all of this together and its no wonder I cite Max as being one of my biggest influences and mentors, he actually pushed me as a DJ and got me some gigs that to this day I will ever forget. Without Max I very much doubt if I would be doing what I do today!

He certainly made his mark on the world and is often called the local legend. I am grateful out paths collided and the journey he made me start.

Rest in eternal peace my friend, mentor and someone who helped shape who I am today.

A special 2 hour show featuring the music of UK (Scottish) DJ and producer Craig Smith, I have stated many times Craig is one of my favourite DJ’s and I am also a big fan of the music he makes so it seems very fitting to feature a show of his music and give a little acknowledgement and respect to the talented, humble a nice guy Craig is.

So as per my previous post I closed out the terrace and we all moved downstairs into the basement at Grow. Great small room and on the night had a wicked vibe, One of those rooms that you know could be special, I was on a high already so just wanted to play proper deep and underground house music. I think I delivered that and still had a full floor at closing. Enjoy

View Details

This was a huge amount of fun! The Mucho Soul team invited me to play for them, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect as I had never played at Grow in Hackney before. I had no idea what musical direction to go in. I was asked to close the Terrace and the club so knew I need to be well prepared. We arrived early to mingle and soak up the vibe and other DJ’s. I admit as most of the time I had no idea what I was actually going to play until I selected my first track. Strangely enough that turned out to be the song I wanted to finish on as its Andreas favourite. The crowd where very mixed but incredibly open. This meant I could play a lot of things I don’t often get the chance to play. I must say on the day this one felt very special. I hope you enjoy the recording as much.

Hi All, hope you are well?

This weeks Revolve showcased a 2 hour section of a mix I did a couple of years ago, recorded when I first got the news that it was unlikely Mandy would recover and the cancer had won. Feeling devastated I went home and did the only thing I could to get through and played music. I played for around 8 hours straight that night, very emotional. I did record it but only managed to capture 4 hours due to the stick being full and in my mindset had not thought to check it. I didn’t listen to music for a long time after recording this which in itself was very alien and traumatic.

Below is the full 4 hours as it was recorded, no talking just 100% sweet soulful house music, all vocals, no dubs or clever mixes, just a piece of me poured out through the tunes, I’m very happy I have got to place in which I feel I can share this with you. Enjoy x

Hi all

How are things with you?

Things are a little crazy in Blackwax world but in a good way. My mind is constantly racing right now as busy planning lots of stuff for this year. Loads of party’s to plan lots of other events I have been asked to play at too. Aside from that its my 20th Wedding anniversary this year so some things planned for that too (I won’t say too much on that just in case my dear wife actually reads this) We have a road trip organised and I am also taking her to Croatia (Suncebeat) for the first time. Some of you already no we are renewing our wedding vows in Spain right before the Vocal Booth party in September, all this coupled with a potential new business venture, holding down a full time job and squeezing in time with the grand kids i’m feeling a bit crazy at present. Definitely not complaining quite the opposite in fact its good to be busy.

I am thinking of starting a monthly presented podcast not live or on radio but definitely with some mic talk rather than just a mix show, what do you think? Would you listen? Let me know in the comments.

As I take time to gather my thoughts I felt compelled to write this blog . Most will probably not find it of interest but wanted to document things in some way. I said to myself I wasn’t going to promote anything specific in this post but as always some artwork was completed today so just can’t help but share this with you. SummerHouse new artwork does look rather good!

One last thing I am now doing a news letter maybe once a month, why not subscribe to get more news straight to your inbox unless you only have email on your phone and always have 60000 unread emails then probably best not to bother. xx

Hope to see some of you soon, thanks for reading my ramblings, big love.
