Tamar Haspel is a journalist and Oyster Farmer, who’s been on the food and science beat for almost 20 years. Chef, author and entrepreneur, James Whetlor founded Cabrito Goat after keeping a few goats to solve a land management problem. Being a successful chef, a few of the goats ended up on the menu. After goat outsold beef the first week (still don’t believe it), James thought perhaps there was a larger market for kid goat meat and it turns out there was. We go deep into the history of why goat meat is considered the poor man’s food and Wendell commits to trying something new.

Dr. Cody Creelman received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with distinction in 2006 from the University of Alberta and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Cody grew up near Beaverlodge, Alberta on a commercial cow/calf operation and raised purebred Simmental cattle. Dr. Creelman joined Veterinary Agri-Health Services, in May 2011 as an associate veterinarian and now, as of 2013, is a managing partner. His professional interests include pathology, large animal surgery, cow/calf and feedlot production medicine. Since becoming a veterinarian Dr. Creelman has discovered a new passion, revolving around the use of mobile technology in the field. This includes consulting on veterinary application design projects as well as leveraging various social media platforms to market veterinary services.

February 25 2016 A conversation with Dr. Leah Dorman, Food System Veterinarian, Phibro Animal Health about responsible antibiotic usage. Bio: Your source for honest information about animal health issues. As the mother of three children, it is vitally important to me to ensure that antibiotics are effective when I need them most: when one of my kids is sick. As a veterinarian, I also recognize the importance of antibiotics to the welfare of animals. I took an oath to protect animal health, prevent animal suffering, and to promote human health. Remaining true to this oath is very important to me. Below is an excerpt from the oath I took. “…I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.” I live on a farm in Ohio with my husband, Brad, and three daughters, Olivia, Cora and Darla. I have an unusual story behind my career path. As a teenager, I visited Haiti on a mission trip and it broke my heart to see hungry and malnourished people. It left such a lasting impression on me that I knew I wanted to impact hunger somehow. I also happen to love animals. So, I chose a career that allowed me to play a supporting role in supplying food to the world, while also working to keep animals healthy. I am a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, U.S. Animal Health Association and National Institute for Animal Agriculture and have been trained as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician. These experiences have helped me to gain deep insight into animal health issues. My time as a large animal veterinarian is the foundation of my experience and knowledge.
