Episode NotesEpisode 88: Matthew 1 - A Royal Genogram - Pt. 2
February 12, 2024 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Mathew begins his gospel with a long list of names… and it’s a list you may be tempted to skip over just to move more quickly to the story of Jesus’ birth… but the birth story really begins with the list of names. It’s a list which includes, among other things, sexual scandal, and the stories of five faithful women.

February 1, 2024 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
I’ve always thought most of scripture was inspired… I mean, let’s be honest, those long lists of names in the genealogies, somebody must have snuck those in after the final edits. If that’s what you’ve always thought, get ready, because today’s episode is going to flip your script.

Episode NotesEpisode 86: Intro to Matthew - Recognizing the Ol’ Switcharoony
January 25, 2024 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In the movie the Princess Bride, there is a battle of the wits between two characters, Vizzini, a “Sicilian man of genius,” and the main character Westley. For those who have seen it, you know it’s a great example of the old Switcharoony, which suggests a surprising change or reversal has taken place. Well... the gospel of Matthew is full of surprising and unexpected reversals. In today’s episode we’ll introduce the gospel and give some examples of how you’ve probably been misreading it for years.

In an attempt to better understand the signs of the new covenant, baptism and communion, we jump into 1 Corinthians 10 and consider the significance of Paul’s instruction about baptism and communion as displayed in the story of the exodus from Egypt. Episode 83 -Shotgun Weddings, Rings and New Covenant Baptism
Aug 23, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Weddings are a big deal. I’m always amazed at the many details that go into such events. It usually takes months to properly plan and execute a modern wedding ceremony. But one doesn’t actually need that much time. There’s really only a few things needed for two people to get married. In today’s episode, we’ll take a closer look at the Biblical wedding metaphor and ask if, in our modern day rendition, we’re maybe unintentionally creating shotgun wedding scenarios with Jesus… where forget to bring the engagement ring.

Episode 81 -Three... It's a Magic Number
July 29, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
I grew up listening to School House Rock. I know that dates me a little… but I suspect with the internet and all… there are many in every generation that are familiar with songs like Interjections, I’m Just a Bill, and Conjunction Junction. These songs were formative during my development years. It was during those years that I also learned that the number three… well... there’s something about that number that’s magic. In today’s episode we’ll look into the significance of the number three, both culturally and biblically.

It features a magician, who goes over multiplying by three while many examples are provided. (A man and a woman having a baby –three in the family; heart, soul, body – three parts) The music and lyrics are by Bob Dorough, and it is also performed by him (with uncredited backing vocalists and a male singer). It first premiered on the pilot episode of "Curiosity Shop" on September 2, 1971. Two years later, when Schoolhouse Rock! premiered, the airdate was on January 6, 1973. Episode 80 -The Translation/Transliteration Trouble Within Testament Texts
July 8, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Most people are familiar with the process of translation. But, fewer people are familiar with the process of transliteration. Translation is the process of reworking text from one language into another to maintain the original message and communication. Translation answers the question… what does that mean. In contrast… Transliteration changes the words from one language into another with similar-sounding letters. It answers the question… what did the original word sound like. In English Bibles, we usually translate the biblical text to convey meaning, but sometimes we transliterate the text to protect the way the original words sounded when they were spoken. This often happens with names of people and places. In this episode we discuss these two methods and take a look at some of the troublesome complications that arise when they are employed within the pages of sacred text.

Episode 79 - REST API (After Pentecost Instruction)
June 8, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In the world of computers, "REST API" stands for Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface. It is an architectural style and a set of principles for designing networked applications. In web development, REST is widely used to create efficient APIs that enable communication between different software systems. However, when it comes to the concept of rest in the Bible, "REST API" takes on a different meaning. While many studies focus on the Old Testament's teachings on rest or Jesus' interactions with the idea, not many delve into the "After Pentecost Instruction" given for rest.
Understanding the instruction after the events of Pentecost, in Acts 2, is necessary. Those events mark the birth of the modern church. The instructions given before this were for a world that couldn't fully comprehend the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of the Messiah. Therefore, studying the New Testament's "Rest API" is the ideal conclusion to a comprehensive study on the topic.

Episode 77 - Jubilee Jesus
May 25, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
One may be familiar with the term jubilee. It's a descriptor that is sometimes used in our modern culture in a variety of ways. In this episode we look into the biblical context for the idea of the jubilee. We will define it, look at the Old Testament context, and examine how Jesus interacted with the idea. And... spoiler alert... the whole concept points to Jesus' ministry. That's why I often refer to him as the Jubilee Jesus!

Episode 76 - C.S. Lewis and His Platonic Christianity
May 18, 2023 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Throughout the centuries many authors have described a world-view consisting of a dualistic reality. In other words, there’s one reality that we all interact with in the physical realm, experience and know, but there is another reality that is unseen. And that unseen version is one of a higher quality and perfection. Bible readers may feel right at home with that description. But you may be surprised that the current biblical worldview may have had some of it’s origins in ancient secular philosophy.
In this episode we examine the way a two authors, Plato and C.S. Lewis, have possibly influenced your view of the world in which we live. We also compare and contrast how some of these concepts, specifically their use of shadows, may interact with the text of the New Testament. This conversation may be a bit uncomfortable for some… because it might demand you rethink different aspects of your reality.

Episode 74 - Easter and the Cultic Calendar
April 7, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
It's an Easter special! In this episode we consider the Jewish cultic calendar, which includes the feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits. These divinely instituted assemblies are closely connected to the Christian celebration of Easter. We also introduce and examine a literary connection (regarding the gain harvest) which is often ignored by our modern English translations.

Episode 73 - Ancient Cosmology & Divine Rest
April 1, 2022 (no fooling!) - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode we take a little trip. We’ll be visiting the world of the Ancient Near East (ANE). Why is this important? Because the Bible was written into that ancient culture. We’ll be looking at how people who lived in the Ancient Near East understood the creation of the cosmos and what they thought of the gods that they believed ruled over their world. It’s quite a journey, and it may cause you to rethink how you’ve understood the first few chapters of Genesis.

Episode 72 - Religious False Dilemmas
March 23, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode we look discuss religious false dilemma fallacies. Sometimes these dilemmas are propagated by bad actors with malicious intent, but sometimes they are just passed along by people that don't know there are more options from which to choose. We look at how Jesus answered the false dichotomy... and venture into some modern examples of the same.

Episode 70 - The Day of the Great Cessation - Exodus 20:8-11
March 2, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode we venture into the sacred ground of the fourth commandment. When God says, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” He’s talking about the original 7th day of creation. That’s what He made holy. It’s because God stopped a certain type of work that day. He stopped the creative activity of the first six days. It was in those days he gave function and order to the universe. And at the end of the sixth day is says everything was “very good”.

Episode 70 - Remembering Michael Heiser
Feb 22, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode, we take a moment to memorialize the passing of the theologian and scholar, Dr. Michael S. Heiser. In 2020, Heiser was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Pancreatic cancer. On Feb 15, 2023 he turned 60, and five days later he transitioned to experience the unseen realm he wrote so much about. He was a Christian author and biblical Old Testament scholar whose area of expertise was the nature of the spiritual realm, specifically the ANE worldview of the Divine Council. I'll describe all the podcasting techniques I've "borrowed" from him... and give my "Top 5" all-time episode of his Naked Bible Podcast.

- Sometimes the answers to our biblical conundrums are available within the biblical text… but sometimes we need to go outside the text for cultural and contextual help. The familiar mantra, “The Bible says it, I believe it, and that settles it”… should likely be rephrased to say: “The Bible says it, I’m confused by it, perhaps I’m missing something, and maybe the ANE cultural context can give us insights into the problem.” That’s a little harder to remember, but I believe it’s closer to the truth of the situation.

Episode 69 - Unscrambling Christ's Easy Yoke
Feb 16, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode we attempt to unscramble Christ's easy yoke. When Jesus offered rest to the weary and heavy-laden, He harnessed a yoke to His offer. Throughout the Bible, yokes are closely associated with the work of slavery and unfortunately, Christ's yoke has been mixed-up and misunderstood by many. So, let's try unscramble this one.

Episode 68 - What's Left of Sabbath Rest
Feb 9, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Many of the books written on the topic of biblical rest focus largely on the observance of the Old Testament's fourth commandment. But the seventh-day sabbath is just a small sliver of what the Bible has to say on the topic. The author of Hebrews spends nearly two chapters discussing the "rest that remains for the people of God," yet never mentions the seventh-day sabbath anywhere in his argument. This prompts the question, "What's Left of Sabbath Rest?"

Episode 67 - Morris Dirks - 1980's Youth Group Culture
Jan 26, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Morris Dirks is well known in the Pacific Northwest corner of the United States. He was the head pastor at two large churches (in Oregon and Washington) and is the founding Director of Soul Formation, a non-profit that ministers to leaders in the church. But before all that, Morris was my youth pastor. In this episode we look back on the 1980's Evangelical Youth Group Culture and identify lots of good, some of the bad, but mostly just the crazy fun we had.

Episode 64: Acts 27-28 - Survivor - Malta
Jan 7, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
The last two chapters in Acts contain the details of an amazing shipwreck where all the crew and passengers are brought safely to the island of Malta. The story is better than a similar reality tv program you may have watched… and for several reasons it’s also a fitting end to Luke’s account of the Acts of the Apostles.

Episode 61: Acts 24-26 - Felix, Festus, and Agrippa
Dec 30, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In Acts 24-26, Paul stands before three Roman backed rulers, Felix, Festus, & Agrippa II. You may have read this story not really understanding who these rulers were. If that’s you, you are not alone. Most people gloss right over these Roman sychophants. So sit back, relax, and let’s talk about the men who judged Paul before he went to Rome.

Episode 61: Acts 22-23 - The Commissioning Formula
Dec 13, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
There is a common way the biblical authors tell the story when a person is commissioned by God for a specific task. While these revelations are always unique to those who receive them, they all share a literary form found throughout the Bible and other Ancient Near Eastern literature. Luke uses this formula three times in Acts 22-23.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 57: Acts 15 - Who Were Those "Appointed to Eternal Life?"
October 19, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In Acts 15, a decision is made. The question on the table was how to keep peace between the different cultural expectations of those who had come to faith in Jesus. The list of action items they came up with might be a little surprising to our modern ears. But what’s really interesting… is something that didn’t make the list at all.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 56: Acts 13-14 - Who Were Those "Appointed to Eternal Life?"
September 28, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
*10-12-23 Note - The original release of this episode had some minor production errors. Those have been corrected and the new version is available for download.
There are many ideas about how people get "saved." Is God in control of the whole process, or do people have some say in what they believe. There’s a story in Acts 13-14 that some think speaks to the topic. But we may not be understanding the passages ancient context? If that’s the case, we may have some rethinking to do!

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 55: Acts 12 - The Logos and the Mythos
September 28, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In ancient times stories used two general concepts, logos and mythos, to convey meaning to their readers. It’s true of stories outside the Bible, but it’s also true of the stories we find within the Bible as well. In this episode we look further into the ancient understanding of logos and mythos and how they are presented in Acts 12.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 54: Acts 10-11 - The Gentile Pentecost

When we read Acts 10, we often make Cornelius the focus of the chapter. But a careful reading of the text suggests that Peter is really the dynamic character with the most movement. Could it be that Peter was also given a gift of the Holy Spirit the day the Gentiles spoke in tongues?

August 27, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Acts 9 is where we find the story of Saul’s conversion. But you may be surprised to discover that’s not the only place this story is found. Luke included two other versions of the story later in Acts, and each episode adds important details not found in chapter nine. In this episode we gather all the details together and try to figure out what exactly happened to Saul that day.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 52: Acts 8 - The Samaritans
August 9, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In Acts 8, Philip made his way to Samaria to tell them the story of the Christ. This was significant for a number of reasons, but mostly because the Samaritans and the Jews didn’t normally associate with one another. You may already know that, but today we will examine more closely how and why these two groups came to be at odds.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 51: Acts 7 - The Gospel in the Story of Stephen
August 9, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In Acts 7, Stephen becomes the first of the "Christ-Followers" to be killed for his faith. And right before he dies he gives a long sermon that most readers just skip right over… because they think it’s not relevant. But for some reason, Luke under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, thought the details of this chapter important enough to include. Today, we’ll look at how Luke uniquely shares the good news of Jesus through the story of Stephen.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 50: Acts 6 - Living Sacrifices
July 25, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In act 6, we read about a problem in the early days of the church. Some widows in the church were being overlooked by other church members. And it turns out it was an ethnic issue. The locals weren’t getting along with those from out of town. In this episode we’ll look a little deeper into the problem and try to connect their solution back to a story in the book of numbers.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 49: Acts 5 - The Fate of Ananias and Sapphira
July 10, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
There are a few times in Scripture where God hands down a death sentence for what we might otherwise consider a somewhat minor infraction. You might view the story of Ananias and Sapphira, in Acts 5, as one such story. Did they really have to die for what they did? But what if a careful theological investigation of this double death turned up a whole new perspective on what happened that day?

Friends, lend me your ears. No really… I need your ears! Would you be willing to be an Audiobook Beta Listener?
My Rethinking Rest book is scheduled for release on Jan 19, 2023, and I’ve decided to record the audiobook myself! Needless to say… I’ve never done this before. But I’ve started the process and I’m needing some feedback. That’s where you can help!
I’ve uploaded this excerpt from the first chapter of the Rethinking Rest audiobook. I’d love it if you would be willing to give it a listen.
While listening: you can access the Electronic Endnotes for reference:
- “Electronic Endnotes” Link
After you listen: I’d appreciate just 5 more minutes of your time to fill out the feedback form at the bottom of this page:
The whole process shouldn’t take more than half an hour.
I’m also testing out another innovation, Interactive Electronic Endnotes. Have you ever listened to an audiobook that you know has extensive footnotes… but they don’t reference them in the audio version of the book? Yeah… that bugs me too. So here’s what I’ve done. I’ve uploaded all the endnotes (those are just footnotes put all at the end of the book) to a webpage and as you’ll hear, I reference them within the audio version. So when you hear me say, Endnote 16, for instance, you have the ability to pull up the endnote and read it… just like someone who bought the print version. Oh, and did I mention the Electronic Endnotes are interactive? I’ve gone through the first chapter and linked parts of the notes to further information that’s available free of charge on the world wide web. I’m telling you… you can get lost in these endnotes. There’s even some funny little easter eggs I’ve put in there for those that care to hunt around a little. There’s a link in the show notes to the Electronic Endnotes as well.
In the feedback form there’s place to let me know if you’d like to be notified when I’ve got another excerpt to listen to.
Lastly, If all that wasn’t a good enough reason to become a Audio Beta Listener… for every verifiable “Beta Listener Feedback Form” I receive, I’ll be donating $10 to StopSoldierSuicide.org. I’m taking part in their 25-mile Swim Challenge this month (June of 2022) as a part of my Homes and Help Initiative that I introduced in episode 45. So spread the word! Let’s get as many Beta Listeners as possible! Your feedback is valuable to me… and it will also benefit many soldiers who need our support.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 47: Acts 2-4 - Should We Be Counting Converts?
June 24, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Counting converts has become a common practice within modern church culture. But who are we counting? And why such a focus on the numbers. It may be partly due to the events recorded in Acts chapters 2-4, and today we’ll look a little more closely at the numbers Luke recorded to see if he was counting converts, and telling us to do the same.

Rethinking Scripture PodcastEpisode 46: Acts 2 - What Just Happened?
June 6, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
I recoded this episode on June 5th, 2022… which was Pentecost Sunday. I was in "The Upper Room" (my recording studio) and we covered the "What" of Acts chapter 2. What exactly happened on that Pentecost Sunday in Acts 2? And what relationship does that event have with Paul’s description of tongues in 1 Corinthians 12-14? Get your rethinking hats on… this one is going to be fun!

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 44: Acts 2 - The Day of Pentecost
May 18, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
There’s possibly no passage in Scripture that is more hotly debated than Acts chapter 2. Arguments abound over who, what, where, how, and why. In fact, just about the only thing people agree on is the when of this passage. These events happened when the day of Pentecost had come. And today we’ll try and sort out the passage and bring clarity to these momentous events.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 43: Acts 1 - You're Going the Wrong Way!
May 18, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Several things occur in Acts chapter 1 that set up the well known events of the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2. But don’t make the mistake of assuming that the content of this chapter is only an ellipse... or a placeholder with its only purpose to get to the story further down the road. Acts chapter 1 includes the often neglected account of Jesus’ ascension into the heavens.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 42: Introduction to the book of Acts
May 8, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
The book of Acts is the story of how the witness of Jesus the messiah made it’s way from Jerusalem to the remotest parts of the earth. But we would be deficient if we just read these individual stories as disconnected events. Luke, the author, has organized these episodes so there are hidden treasures throughout the narrative.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 41: The Rethinking Conversion Project
April 25, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In today’s church culture, someone’s conversion is surrounded by certain expectations. Conversion is often understood as a “personal decision for Christ” that happens at a church alter, or maybe an outreach event. And when that decision is memorialized by some rendition of the “sinner’s prayer”, only then is it considered official. But what if our modern understanding of conversion isn’t at all like what the biblical text shows. Then we may need to “rethink conversion”.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 40: The Rethinking Babel Project - Part 3
April 6, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Today we go further down the theological rabbit hole of Babel theology… we’ve arrived at the Gift of Tongues. There is maybe not a more divisive topic in the church today… and unfortunately I’ll not going to be able to clear up all the confusion around the gift that was originally given to eliminate confusion. How ironic is that? That this particular gift would cause confusion.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 39: The Rethinking Babel Project - Part 2
March 29, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Biblically speaking, the confusion of our languages and, in turn, humanities general inability to communicate effectively with each other, is a practical expression and a tangible reminder of rebellion against God’s authority. Humanity once communicated with each other, and with God, with no confusion using one language. But then rebellion happened and everything changed. What would it take to reconnect the lines of communication once again? Well, it would take an act of God.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 38: The Rethinking Babel Project
March 15, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Some people think of the first eleven chapters of Genesis as only a prologue or filler to get to the story of Abraham. But it’s in those chapters where key the theme of rebellion is first introduced. In the beginning chapters of Genesis we are also introduced to the idea of exile. These themes culminate in one short story in chapter eleven. It’s about a tower reaching into the heavens and God confusing language to disrupt a rebellion.

There is nothing more theologically foundational than the events that happen in the garden of Eden. It’s in this garden that we are introduced to Adam and Eve, the serpent, and the biblical concept of exile. The garden contains a mighty river of life, and the tree of life. Rest. We talk about it a lot, but it seems so elusive. Even when you get some rest… it seems like that refreshment just doesn’t last very long. But would you be surprised if I told you that there is a fully-developed theology of rest within the pages of Scripture? And it’s not what you’re thinking... because biblical rest is so much more than just a one-day-a-week shadow of better days ahead.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 34: End of Year Reflections
December 31, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Thanks for listening.
We’ve accomplished a lot in the first 6-months of the podcast.
We introduced what Rethinking Scripture is all about. It’s about rethinking what we thought we already knew about the Bible. It’s about taking those things that have become entrenched in our mindset, and bringing them back to the table for a little chat.
I’m taking a couple of weeks off to do some planning for the next year. You can use this time to do a few things.
- You can get caught up on your listening. Odds are you’ve missed some of the episodes along the way. Now’s your chance to head back and get caught up… or even revisit an episode that challenged you in a particular way.
- Give some other podcasts a listen. Some of my favorites right now.

He has also earned an M.A. in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania (major fields: Ancient Israel and Egyptology).
- https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/podcasts/rise-and-fall-of-mars-hill/ - Founded in 1996, Seattle’s Mars Hill Church was poised to be an influential, undeniable force in evangelicalism—that is until its spiraling collapse in 2014. The church and its charismatic founder, Mark Driscoll, had a promising start. But the perils of power, conflict, and Christian celebrity eroded and eventually shipwrecked both the preacher and his multimillion-dollar platform.
- https://www.churchcalledtov.org - Tragically, in recent years, Christians have gotten used to revelations of abuses of many kinds in our most respected churches. We need a better way. The sad truth is that churches of all shapes and sizes are susceptible to abuses of power, sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse. Abuses occur most frequently when Christians neglect to create a culture that resists abuse and promotes healing, safety, and spiritual growth. How do we keep these devastating events from repeating themselves? We need a map to get us from where we are today to where we ought to be as the body of Christ. That map is in a mysterious and beautiful little Hebrew word in Scripture that we translate “good,” the word tov.
Thanks for a great year… and we’ll see you back here in a couple of weeks with the first episode in 2022.

When we think of the advent of the Christ, many of our perceptions are based on the scene at the nativity. We have come to expect three kings, or wise men, bearing small gifts for a King. In this episode, we attempt to tie the reasons why the magi brought gold, and frankincense and myrrh back to the Old Testament book of Isaiah.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 30: Rethinking Advent - The Nativity
December 21, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
When we think of the advent of the Christ, many of our perceptions are based scene at the nativity. We in the Western culture often picture a barn housing the family that night. In the east, they prefer a cave setting. But does the text, and recent archeology give us any clues as to a different possibility?

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 29: Rethinking Advent - The Timing
December 20, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
When we think of the advent of the Christ, some of our perceptions are based in the timing of the events. While we celebrate in the middle of the winter season, that’s likely not the time when the events actually happened. We also have some assumptions as to the timing of Mary’s pregnancy. In this episode we examine the timing of the advent.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 28: Rethinking Advent - The Family
December 19, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
We celebrate the birth of Jesus every year. It’s a story we know well, but how much of our version of the story truly reflects what actually happened? How well do our pageants, movies, nativity sets, and other icons represent what the Scriptures actually say? This Christmas season, won’t you join me as we seek to clarify the season by rethinking advent. In this episode we look into the character of "The Family".

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 27: The Restoration of Peter - Pt. 2 (John 21)
December 16, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
At the end of John’s gospel there’s a funny little sentence that suggests that the world could not contain the books that could be written about the many other things which Jesus did. I’ve always taken that as a bit of an exaggeration… but what if its not? What If we’ve misunderstood what John was trying to say?
John chapter 21 is all about restoration. The disciples limped their way through events in the garden of Gethsemane and then disbursed and deflected their connection with Jesus through the rest of that weekend. This would have left all of them, but especially Peter, with some traumatic wounds that needed to be healed. That’s what we see Jesus doing here… healing the broken hearted. In this episode, we welcome Dr. Warren Gage to the podcast to help us unpack the restoration of the disciples.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 25: The Fulfillment of First Fruits (John 20)
December 3, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
John 20 features the empty tomb. The resurrection of Jesus is the capstone of the good news. And there’s a subtle statement in the first verse that you’ve likely passed right by. Why haven’t you noticed it? Because you’re not from around there... and today we’ll take a closer look at a cultural more that’s no longer understood without being said.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 23: God in a Garden (John 18)
November 19, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In John 18, we get to see God in a garden. It’s the night of Jesus’ betrayal and arrest. During all the commotion Jesus makes a request of those arresting him that you may not have noticed. He asks the Roman cohort to let his disciples go their way. Surprisingly, this request gives us a unique insight into the nature and development of faith.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 21: The World’s Hour vs. the Day of the Lord (John 16)
November 4, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
John chapter 15 has a unique distinction... it is entirely red letters. The entire chapter is Jesus’ dialogue with his disciples. No other chapter in this gospel has that distinction. So what does Jesus talk about in all those red letters? Well, among other things… he gives a lesson on how to grow and care for grapes… and that’s because Jesus is Di Vine.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 19: My Father's House (John 14)
October 21, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
John chapter 14 is often referred to as Jesus’ farewell discourse. In it, He talks of his coming and going and his intent to prepare a mansion for each and every believer. But, as much as I hate to say it, we’ve likely come to a bit of a misunderstanding about that. As it turns out, the dwelling Jesus is talking about might actually be a little more like a mobile home.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 18: Washing Up Before Dinner (John 13)
October 14, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In this episode, we begin looking at a series of chapters in John’s gospel where Jesus and the disciples share a meal in the upper room. Much of the content is in red letters, and its confusing material for the disciples to process. We’ll examine that context in a little more detail, and focus in on what Jesus said about washing people’s feet.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 17: A Voice from Heaven (John 12)
October 7, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Chapter 12 is a turning point in the gospel of John. It’s in this chapter that the author describes the end of Jesus’ public ministry. But before Jesus ducts out of the public eye, John ties together several of the themes he’s developed thus far in his gospel. It’s a continuation of Jesus calling his sheep away from the temple ministry, and a further identification of his other flock.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 16: The Resuscitation of Lazarus (John 11)
September 27, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In John chapter 11, several questions arise out of how Jesus handles the death of his good friend, Lazarus. But a logical look at the assumptions we have, about this chapter, may cause us to rethink what we thought we already knew about Lazarus’ new lease on life.
Referenced Resources:
- Links to Jewish thoughts on lingering souls:
- https://reformjudaism.org/glimpses-afterlife - Zunz dates it to the middle of the 7th century.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviticus_Rabbah - The Encyclopaedia Judaica and Jacob Neusner date it to the 5th century.
- The Zohar, which is one of the texts that make up the Kabbalah, is composed of the teachings of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who was a second-century Talmudic mystic. After being passed along by oral tradition for centuries, the Zohar was finally published in the late 13th century. The belief that the soul lingers for three days after death seems to have emanated from the texts that make up the Kabbalah, notably the Zohar. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shemira)
- In his book "Jewish Views of the Afterlife," Simcha Paull Raphael says: "Immediately following death, there is a period known as Hibbut Ha Kever, pangs of the grave. During this period, the soul is confused, lingers around the body and tries to go back to his home to be with his loved ones. After this, there is a maximum period of 12 months in Gehenna, which is a realm described as fiery, where the soul is purified of its sins." After the twelve-month period, it is believed the soul rests permanently in the afterlife. (https://classroom.synonym.com/jewish-belief-that-the-spirit-lingers-for-three-days-12087774.html)
- Regarding Jesus needing to name Lazarus specifically.
- A quaint Puritan writer said that if Jesus had not named Lazarus when He shouted, He would have emptied the whole cemetery! (Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 337.)
- Jesus shouted only three words: Lazarus come out! Augustine once remarked that if Jesus had not said Lazarus’ name all would have come out from the graves. (Edwin A. Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 15: The Good Shepherd (John 10)
September 20, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
John 10 is all about sheep and shepherds… and recently the church has tried to make this passage all about our modern-day context. But what if John 10 isn’t speaking about the 21st-century at all? What if Jesus was just describing His ministry within the religious context of His day? Well… that type of reading might cause us to rethink this entire passage.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 14: A... Problem, of Punctuation? (John 9)
September 13, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Before Jesus heals a blind man, in John 9, the disciples ask Him a very strange question. “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” Unfortunately, our English translations may be misguiding us in regards to Jesus’ response. So let’s move some punctuation around and rethink what Jesus might have been saying about sin, work… and the sabbath.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 13: The Adulterous Variant
September 1, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
You may have heard a someone say, “The Bible says it, I believe it, and that settles it”... implying, at least in part, that every word in their version of the Bible came directly from of the original text. But nothing could be further from the truth, and today we’ll look at a popular passage, in your Bible, that likely wasn’t originally included in John’s gospel.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 12: Was Jesus a Jew?
Aug 23, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In John’s gospel, there’s one group of people that keeps popping up. And we find them in the very first verse of Chapter 7. which says “the Jews” were seeking to kill Jesus. But wasn’t Jesus a Jew? Well… in one sense He was certainly Jewish… but according to the gospels, He definitely didn’t fit into this one particular group. And today, we’ll attempt to unpack the gospel's complicated category known as “the Jews”.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 11: All That the Father Gives
Aug 16, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Modern discussions about the last part of John 6 have become a hotbed of controversy. Those who self-describe as Calvinists and Arminians have been at battle over this passage for decades. And I, unknowingly, jumped into the middle of that mess back in the fall of 2003. I was in my masters program, I thought I understood what the passage said, but then one of my professors challenged me to think outside my theological box. Today, I’m excited to share the journey I’ve been on with “The Bread of Life Discourse.”

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 10: Barley Loaves, Wind and Waves
Aug 9, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Only about 8% of the book of John repeats events from the other three gospels. That means most of John’s gospel is new material. But in John 6, there are two events that are included in that 8%. The Feeding of the 5000 is found in all four gospels… Jesus walking on water is found in Matthew and Mark (but not in Luke). So the question is, what is it about these events that caused John to include them in the list of rare repeats. We’ll take a look at that and more in this week’s episode.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 8: A Well in a Foreign Land (John 4)
July 26, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
In John chapter 4, Jesus has a meeting with a woman at a well. What kind of person was this woman? We’ve been lead to believe she was a social outcast, possibly a prostitute, someone with an immoral past, who was shunned by her own community. You might have come to see her as a misfit. But from where do these conclusions come? There are two details from this story that have been taken out of their first-century context, we’ve come to some modern-day conclusions about what they mean. In turn, we’ve painted a Picasso of a portrait that would have been unrecognizable to John’s first-century audience. You may feel you have a deep-seated understanding of this Samaritan… but it’s time to rethink what we thought we already knew about the woman at the well.

Episode 7: The Voice of the Bride and the Bridegroom
July 19, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
At the end of John 3, there are some verses that you probably didn’t know were there. You’ll find them right after the Nicodemus conversation, and they’re right before the well-known encounter with the woman at the well. So let’s slow down and not get too far ahead of ourselves… there’s a lot to rethink in this section about the words of John the Baptist, and just how far back the bride of Christ existed.

Rethinking Scripture Podcast - Episode 3: Rethinking Conversion (John 1)
June 21, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Why is John 1 written in such a fragmented format? It's because there were a bunch of Old Testament Saints alive that still needed to hear about Jesus. In this episode we rethink the topic of "conversion" by considering the first-century faithful remnant, who were already saved before they met the Messiah.

Episode 1: Introduction to Rethinking Scripture
June 5, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall
Why is it important to rethink what we already know about the Bible? Well... because what we think we know is very likely wrong. Or at least it has been somehow altered, away from its original meaning, by our traditions and creeds. We also need to rethink because it's exactly what we don't want to do on our own. It's a human condition to want to hunker down and think the same way we've always thought. But intelligence in the modern era is more about how adaptable to change we are... than our unwillingness to think about something new.
