Living with ADHD and CPTSD: Recent Episodes

Russ Germain

Being told that you have CPTSD and then a year later learning you also have ADHD, is not what I wanted to hear. My life felt like a mess and nothing seemed to go right. With relationship issues, work issues, and family problems, it all felt like I had zero control. Help was needed!

This podcast is about my personal experiences living with ADHD and CPTSD, and the struggles and pain that come with it. My hope is to give others out in the world, who also suffer from ADHD and CPTSD, the sense that they are not alone with the struggles they face each day.

When you grow up, or even in adulthood, and you're confronted with traumatic events, especially those linked to Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or CPTSD, it can feel like you're navigating through a never-ending storm. Whether it's an abusive partner, a toxic parent, or just an ordinary person who inflicts harm, the scars they leave behind can run deep.

Imagine being trapped in a relationship with a narcissist, someone who slowly chips away at your self-worth until you begin to believe every cruel word they utter. It's a journey many have embarked on, and some have managed to escape, while others have been discarded once they've served their purpose.

Often, especially if you haven't sought professional help yet, or you're in the early stages of your recovery, you find yourself facing triggers. These triggers can reawaken the horrors you've endured, causing you to relive the pain over and over again.

The insidious consequence of this is a pervasive sense of self-doubt. You begin to question your own abilities, your decisions, and your self-confidence wanes. It's as if the trauma has cast a long shadow over your life, and it feels impossible to break free from its grip.

In this episode I talk about how stressful trying to live my life is when becoming triggered feels so natural, so normal for me that trying anything new or interacting with a woman or stranger is not an option as it feels safer to stay at home by myself than out there taking risks.

Throughout my healing journey, I had a dedicated therapist who guided me through the darkness of my trauma. However, this path was marred by a unique challenge—my ex-girlfriend, who believed she knew what was best for me, often conflicting with my therapist's approach.

Her strong influence during therapy sessions complicated my healing process. Realizing the need for unbiased healing, I made a significant decision—to change therapists. This marked a fresh start, prioritizing my well-being away from external voices.

In this episode, I invite you to explore the reasons behind my decision, the challenges it presents, and the hopes it holds. We'll delve into the complexities of relationships, trauma, and healing, as I share my personal journey of resilience and transformation. My previous therapist played a vital role in helping me uncover buried wounds, but the dissonance between him and my ex-girlfriend created obstacles.

But there's hope—my new therapist, specializing in trauma therapy and other techniques, represents a beacon guiding me toward the healing I deeply desire.

Enjoy this Encore presentation of a Season 2 Episode 31 of my Podcast!

CPTSD triggers arise from past trauma, when safety was absent and danger loomed. To feel secure, our inner parts merge with the adult, striving for safety amid peril. A must for CPTSD sufferers: unwavering safety, be it in people or places, as lack thereof triggers flashbacks and yearnings for refuge. This quest for safety can breed isolation, urging us to seek solace in the outside world. Tune in to my podcast, exploring the crucial role of safety in a CPTSD-afflicted world.

I had a rough week, starting with seeing my Ex looking at my profile on a dating site to feeling discouraged and lost to having all the built up tension almost come out on a friend. It did show me however that Fear is really holding me back! I am so afraid of being rejected and also afraid of being in another relationship with someone who is abusive!

I don't feel like I am strong enough, brave enough to say "no this isn't going to work, I'm sorry" to the next woman I date if she doesn't work out. The only real course of action that will help me is therapy and a new therapist is the best way to start!

A large percentage of people in society struggle with handling stress and anxiety while in their work environment. It often causes break downs, burnouts, stress leave and can lead to health problems that affect their lives.

Now imagine what that must all feel like to someone who ALSO has CPTSD and has gone through abuse during their childhood or a violent relationship! add that into the equation! Stress in the work environment will definitely make us more susceptible to becoming triggered but we don't know how to or are afraid to speak up about it to someone at work, mostly due to the stigmas and stereotypes created at work.

For many of us who have been through trauma, especially through our childhood or teenage years, we will struggle with many areas of our Social life. One area that really is difficult for myself is my self confidence, which in turn affects my ability to advocate for my own needs and enforce my personal boundaries, both in relationships and in life.

I am really scared of falling into the same routine of meeting someone, getting into a romantic relationship and then learning later that they're not a healthy person but I do not fight to have my needs met and I allow them to walk all over me. So I must learn to advocate for my needs and if a situation presents itself where I need to walk away that I will not fall into the same trap as before.

Part 2 of this 2 episode Podcast.

My ex is a prime of example of a person who grew up being abused who turned it around and re-lived her trauma in a relationship, abusing her partner just like how her parents abused her.

She was verbally and physically abusive, manipulative, judgmental among other traits.

She displayed classic signs of Narcissism as well a Borderline Personality Disorder. This 2 part episode describes the beginning of our relationship, the start of the abuse and how it progressed to the point where she was in complete control and had me believing I was unworthy of anyone's love.

After all the time apart from my past abuser, my Ex Girlfriend.. no longer having to hear her attack me, tell me lies and abuse me and manipulate me, I am seeing it all in my dreams at night! She arrives just like when I lived with her 4 months ago and it looks and feels so real! I try with all I can to fight back, to say what I couldn't say when I was there but the words just don't come and once again am re-traumatized and I am triggered. Just now its in my Subconscious... I haven't seen her since March 1st but that doesn't matter, she now has control of me in my dreams.

When I look at it from a broader perspective it just means there is still work ahead of me... that's ok!

This is a necessary step along our journey to healing from our trauma and moving forward with our lives. If we do not find a way to create, hold and spread out the positive energy day to day the healing process will be a lot more difficult, stressful and decreased our chances of truly finding peace with our past.

Yes, this is difficult to achieve and healing from the abuse we suffered at the hands of our Abuser, the narcissist, the psychopath, the one we continue to fall back on instead of changing our patterns. In order to get to our goal of healing, recovery and finding our peace with our past we have to find that positive energy!, create our own destiny! Take care of ourselves, do what is best for us and never waver! create our boundaries and make sure people respect and abide by them. We are the only ones who can truly decide if we really want to heal from our Trauma, our CPTSD! you need to make the tough choices and start the positive vibe now! otherwise you'll keep failing and falling deeper down that hole.

I tell you today, life is not that much fun even though I am no longer with my Ex and I love on my own! Always little things, experiences and memories or reminders that happen during my day that causes a great deal of pain and anxiety, not to mention emotionally beating myself up!

I know this is just one trigger on top of another and I realize I am safe from her abuse but my fragile mind, my parts can't see my reality as they only see what they still fear. It's so mentally defeating and it hurts each time I am reminded of what she did to me! I can beat this! but likely not on my own...

As simple as it sounds, I kid you not... Recovery is far from it with many twists and turns, set backs and joy our road to recovery is going to be very stressful and hard to deal with, even at the best of times!

Everyone will begin to recover once they have come to the self conclusion that they must get the help they deserve! Don't be surprised if you at times feel overwhelmed, sad, discouraged and angry at yourself! But the fight is worth it when you finally get to where you're meant to be but there is no clear answer.

When you become triggered and your CPTSD becomes active, the fear inside you is strong! So damn strong that your body reacts in such a way that you are frozen, you feel sick and it paralyzes you! Fear is really the main piece of our Trauma, our CPTSD.

But Feelings, our emotions aren't that simple, never that straight forward. WE all know that.

Some people don't realize that getting a diagnosis, whether it's for CPTSD, ADHD, Autism or other Mental illnesses and disabilities is far from a simple procedure. We often face the difficult task in our lives of determining just exactly the issue and many symptoms can mirror CPTSD and ADHD or Autism and CPTSD.

You feel like a lot of your symptoms indicate that you are on the Autism spectrum but perhaps there hasn't been enough work done with your therapist? Because a lot of what you think sounds like Autism is also prevalent in CPTSD! Many ADHD symptoms also are caused by suffering from extensive repetitive trauma but unless you get the proper help from a specialist it's difficult to know and even then, unless you have done a lot of your work and processing, you still may not be sure about it.

Many of us at some point in our lives experience trauma with a lot of us that never even realize that it has ever happened. Complex Post Trauma Stress Disorder (CPTSD) can occur at many different stages of life, most commonly during our childhood or adolescent years.

If you are aware of other people who you are around every day you will often see many either openly display the symptoms of their trauma or will mask the fear and trauma, pretending that everything is just fine! A lot of people in today's society are not very good at hiding their suffering and pain and it shows in numerous ways. Social interaction, personality traits, anger, frustration and even physical traits that to some are difficult to really see unless they know what they're looking for.

Sadly when most people see someone struggling daily or are having issues that often get them in trouble their first impression or reaction is a negative one! They believe that they must be lazy or stupid or anti-social. Some even think they're just born to be trouble makers.

The truth is for many of them is they have been through a lot and they just can't get the help they so desperately need or they feel lost and are too afraid to reach out for help for fear of even more trauma and it is just too much!

4 years ago I never thought that I would be in a relationship where I faced Emotional abuse and physical violence.  Nobody ever wants this but sadly many often don't have a choice and I learned that through it all my CPTSD really became out of control and prevented me from taking my life back until after it ended.  The road ahead is going to be a rather difficult one but if I ever want to experience a real loving, true relationship then I need to be brave, gather up all the courage I can find and begin my healing process.  It's ridiculous just how little I understood during it all, causing me to once again fall right back into the same crazy circle.

hello everyone, due to a Personal situation that has come up I won't be able to record a new episode for today, so instead I will present a previous episode from Season 1, the most Popular ADHD episode about Dopamine!

Dopamine allows us to regulate emotional responses and take action to achieve specific rewards. It’s responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward. Scientists have observed that levels of dopamine are different in people with ADHD than in those without ADHD.

Some researchers believe this difference is because neurons in the brains and nervous systems of people with unmedicated ADHD have higher concentrations of proteins called dopamine transporters. The concentration of these proteins is known as dopamine transporter density (DTD).

I know personally that Dopamine highs play a huge role in daily life, without it the day tends to be very boring and irritable. Listen to my podcast about Dopamine on the ADHD brain.

This is not a knock on you or your ability to be a caring person, we're all capable of caring and loving another person (unless we're a Psychopath) but in order for you to have any chance in having success and being in a happy, loving relationship you need to heal from your Trauma! Relationships have issues, nobody has a perfect relationship and if you are not healing from your CPTSD you are going to cause a lot of pain and hurt for you and more importantly towards your partner in this relationship.

Bottom line? you need to first admit to yourself and accept that you are not healing from your Trauma, your triggers. Then you need to step away from relationships for a while and do what is necessary for YOU! see the therapist, do the processing, work with your parts!

Gain their trust and learn to have control when times are tough, heal from your trauma and then you can really be ready.

I know, it's hard I get it but think of how much hurt and suffering you'll avoid on yourself and put anyone else through? do you really want that?

Many of us have been in at least 1 relationship in our lives and for those who have CPTSD (no matter what stage of healing you're at) it can be difficult to maintain and grow a successful relationship when you are still dealing with your triggers, fears, experiences.  Often we struggle to keep the relationship happy because our Trauma can get in the way and create complications, often leading to our relationship ending.  I talk about my own struggles and experiences that I have had with my relationships and discuss how Trauma created issues during them all.

People all over the world are dealing with Mental health struggles, trauma in their lives that is causing a great deal of pain and suffering but a large percentage do not have any idea what is really going on! Yet every day another person or multiple people are discovering that they experienced repetitive childhood trauma in their lives and have CPTSD! now they just have to figure out how to help themselves begin that difficult process of healing from it.

I also briefly discuss about how men need to stop falling back on the whole "men don't share their feelings and pains and do Not show vulnerability to others!" If we want to heal from our pains and trauma we need to not be scared to tell someone, anyone! and get that help we mostly undeniably deserve!

Being an Inattentive ADHD type I easily become distracted by most things, especially with a conversation where there's background noise of any level.  Unfortunately if you are attempting to converse with someone else who is a Neurotypical they'll often wonder what the hell is going on and will either think we are not interested in what they are saying or that we are really stupid because we usually cannot comprehend what they're telling us in the moment and so we often fake our way through the conversation or make ourselves look stupid!

I discuss here how my mind has such a difficult time with becoming so easily distracted when having conversations and how it affects my ability to really listen and converse back enough to satisfy their desired response.

In the few weeks that have passed since my life took a drastic turn (which honestly hasn't been that bad..) I have really become motivated to make changes to my life that will significantly lessen the issues my ADHD causes for me every day.  I have thought about this multiple times now, "Just how severe is my ADHD?"  I have a theory that a lot of what was making my symptoms so bad was the constant stress, anxiety and fear/triggers my relationship was causing.  So far I am almost certain that my ADHD isn't as bad as I initially thought, perhaps there is a nice bright light at the end of the tunnel??

I'm not really sure how to put this?  You go to therapy and you learn that you have CPTSD, then you discover your "Child Parts" (ID them, learn their purpose, etc) and you process daily and figure out how and why you're having these triggers that are bringing back memories of repetitive trauma from your past.  Piece of cake right?  uh, no...  I have struggled day after day, month after month trying to learn the signs and symptoms of my triggers!  What do I feel?  the physical symptoms, mental symptoms and so on and so on.  yet, why the #@$@ can't I get it right?  I know this is not going to be a quick fix but why am I having such a hard time??

Recently this past week-ish the relationship I had with my girlfriend ended (her choice) and there has been a lot of change going on all around me since.

I am in a state of flux, I don't feel too much when it comes to emotion (sadness, fear, happy) but I am constantly analyzing and trying to learn why and what part of all this is really my fault?  my Emotional Dysregulation and Child Parts ultimately was the eventual cause of the relationship ending but there's so much more to evaluate and explore before I can truly learn and move on.  Complex is just the beginning.....

There are many of us who live alone with ADHD and of course many who live with someone else!, their Partner, family members, roommates etc.

In this episode I discuss the challenges of living on your own and having ADHD as well as the differences when you live with someone else besides you.  Both are equally difficult with their own unique twists and stresses.

There is one area of my life that I have always struggled with and that simply is saying "I am sorry" when something I have done occurs.  I was never really sure if it was my ADHD that causes it or if some repeated childhood trauma created this fear of saying Sorry to someone.

I am scared to tell someone that I am sorry because I believe ultimately they will forever hate me, dismiss me from their life and the worst will happen.   So, I either tried to hide the evidence and hope they didn't find out it was me or I didn't say the words and the result was worse than if I had actually apologized, sigh...

I have some good and bad experiences with ADHD Medication, Vyvanse does work you just need to take it properly and not rush it.  The right doctor, the right support all can help lead you in the right direction to having your own ADHD medication help you out.  If you have ADHD and you aren't sure about taking medication, I recommend giving it a try!

CPTSD is not something anyone wants and nobody ever says "Let me try it out!"  but I know my reality and that is I have to either do the work required to get healthy again or I will forever struggle and feel pain and trauma and there is a really good chance that I won't make it much longer!

You have to do what is necessary in order to heal, to feel closer to "normal".

It's ok to feel scared of your trauma!, you do what is needed in the moment but at some point we do have to look at ourselves in the mirror and decide what our future holds...

We all struggle with Social skills, Social queues, etiquette and so on. Those who have ADHD struggle way more than others and we usually suffer because of it with very few friends and many failed relationships or careers. We tend to turn people off by our lack of understanding of proper social structure and the rules that society expects from us and unfortunately there really is not much we can say to change that however, we can learn over time how to change our behaviors and adapt so that one day we can have a better chance at succeeding.

So, what will you do?  realize that your disability is a thing and take whatever steps necessary to avoid issues, forgetting plans, causing headaches for your family, loved ones or your friends? or are you going to just sit back and use the fact you have ADHD as your excuse whenever something goes wrong?

We have a choice, we either be proactive and find ways to adapt or we become a victim and never own our disability.

I am not going to lie, going from grounded to triggered is so quick and intense that it feels like I'm creating my own Fast and the Furious movie series but about Trauma and triggers!  it's the fly in my ointment, the bane of my existence, the 1 naughty student who spoils it for the rest of us!

I just cannot see the changes occurring within so I can notice the trigger and stop all the unnecessary stress and anxiety created, all by me btw....

Life's joys... the experiences that excite and thrill you!  They're great and always feel so good but at some point you have to come back down to earth, to feel grounded, calm like.

Most neurotypicals usually have no problem with regulating that feeling they get, the good times but you and me?  not really, many times not at all.  I honestly can't say exactly why but I can theorize.. too much dopamine?  addicted to the good because we can't feel normal without?

ok so first.. this is a phrase that comes from my extensive Football background! I'm not talking about Narcissists or abusers.  My journey along this CPTSD trail has been a rough ride to healing but I realized along this route that I needed to learn how my unique self, my system that only I understand is working despite all the challenges!  ADHD and CPTSD is not a friendly mix but I can't allow them to depict the course of my future, decide for me how my life proceeds.

Learning how to go from Point A to Point B (with the thousands of objects standing in my way) I am the only one who can figure that out!

Today's podcast I decide to talk more about two of my ADHD symptoms that really tend to make my life more difficult, Impulse Control and Focus.

Both of these symptoms really have made life very frustrating and stressful, typically every day and I have been trying so hard to change these and learn to become a better functioning person. They affect my relationship, especially Impulse control! Focus is something that can be detrimental to ones health and safety is it's poor so I needed to work so hard on improving it and I am so very thankful that both my ADHD medication Vyvanse and my Anxiety Meds have really helped improve my ability to focus.

Learning how to notice within myself that I have become overwhelmed with Anxiety or I am Triggered has been a very difficult process!  One thing I have started to realize however is that when this happens my ability to communicate is no longer there.  Not exactly sure what happens but it feels as though somewhere in my brain something gets turned off, prevents me from doing more than 1 thing at one time!  if I speak I can't listen or think and comprehend, if I listen I can't think about what to say!  if I think about my responses then I fail to listen to what i'm being told!  Extremely frustrating, especially when you NEED to be able to listen and respond and make sense!

Everyone who suffers from Emotional Dysregulation will have many examples of times where they found themselves unable to handle situations that required them to stay emotionally balanced in order to finish a task or get to a deadline on time or even arrive to a big event early.  It's incredible or in other words, very frustrating when you find yourself running late and you can't find anything you need and you know it is somewhere in this house!  You soon find out just how easy we can become emotionally dysregulated in situations that are stressful, anxious and difficult to control.

Listen to my detailed example of how easily you lose your ability to regulate those emotions!...

I have continued for 3 years now pretending that my CPTSD wasn't that bad...  I never really faced up to the brutal honest truth that this is not good, that I am broken!  I am at a point now where I have nearly ruined a really great relationship because I could not face the truth and be real with everyone, especially myself.

I know that this is by no means going to be easy, it might get scary and may likely take a long time to get where I need to be but it's better than continuing down that same destructive path I've been stuck on for a long time...

Trying to have a conversation that is of high quality and informative and easy flowing for me is very difficult because of my ADHD.  Then my CPTSD becomes triggered as well because the fear of being laughed at, rejected, ignored, not taken seriously or even just frustrating your partner very bad are all things you so want to avoid!  I often start a conversation with a subject that I find very interesting and want to share but I forget details or even at times the important information that gives the person you're telling it to enough to follow along and be able to respond back.  It causes a great deal of frustration and has lead to arguments or fights and causes hurt feelings.

Well.. 120 episodes later (not including bonus) and a lot of frustration and numerous setbacks and triggers, not to mention all the therapy sessions I've attended! my life is beginning to turn around.  All the hard work and patience and failures are working (albeit slowly) so I am feeling more confident about myself, less likely to become blended with my child parts!

It took learning about and understanding every inch of detail the concepts of Emotional Regulation, learning how to notice the signs and symptoms (both physical and mental) that I was becoming dysregulated and eventually triggered!  This is sooo difficult to gain any ground on and to be honest I feel happy but exausted...

My CPTSD has always felt like a double edged sword. I fight and make progress but yet there's more coming every day and I don't know how much longer I can go on? I always thought I had done enough work, made enough progress since learning about my diagnosis that I was ready to face what has always been my hardest battle, my trauma vs my relationship. Until yesterday I had always believed I had done enough that I could move forward, that the light at the end of the tunnel would shine through but I see the truth, that I am not ready! my reality is that I need to do a lot more work that I am not capable of being in a relationship because my trauma is too strong to be the adult and make the adult choices here but instead my parts were the ones in control and made childish choices and displayed child like behaviors and it's likely the the source of the likely demise of my relationship with my partner of 3 1/2 years.

Dealing with CPTSD will never be easy, all the flashbacks, triggers, emotions and fears can be overwhelming at the best of times. So having someone in your life, whether it's a close family member, or your partner can be so meaningful to you. Now that doesn't automatically mean things are easier, no. Our processing and healing is something that can only be done alone! Your partner just won't understand what you are going through and the struggles we face daily, which can be extremely hard on any relationship and not everyone is cut out to be with someone who is suffering from CPTSD. When we are fortunate enough to have that special someone who has an ability to show empathy, compassion, kindness and just BE there for you, it does make a difference in our lives! They are amazing and we know how difficult it will be!

There may come a point in your life where you will decide to tell those in your close knit group of people you know that you have CPTSD, childhood trauma and are trying hard to get better and heal from your trauma.  Whether it's a real close friend, extended family member, your Wife/Husband or BF/GF, you do have a lot to ponder on when you decide who gets this privilege?

Trust and confiding in that person is huge, so extremely important because what they say in response to you can be the difference between growing and becoming more triggered.  Sadly, not everyone who suffers from CPTSD has a person that they can trust enough to tell them about their trauma and that isn't fair at all.

We all deal with triggers when we have CPTSD, that's life!  Unless we have years of work under our belts and processed like our lives depend on it we are likely going to experience a lot of triggers.  Learning why they happen and learning how to notice them is really a difficult step along the way to healing from CPTSD but it certainly is required in order to get there.  I have my triggers, ones that I don't know about and those that I am well aware of, however, learning to to recognize and take action has always been the trickiest part in it all.  My Relationship has taken a beating because of the level of difficulty learning my triggers is.

Due to a mix up at the Doctor's office I was not able to get my prescription refilled in time to avoid missing days without any ADHD meds.  Because it's a controlled substance I was not able to get an extension for a week without first seeing my doctor for a renewed prescription.  It's been what you could say a "Mixed Blessing"

mostly because my symptoms the Vyvanse is used to control or minimize were not really affecting me at all or very minimally, this has lead me to believe that I need an increase in my daily dosage (from 50mg to 60mg) in order to further help minimize the ADHD.  I know that it took 3-4 days before any symptoms even began to appear and when they did it was so minute that I had to truly focus in order to be sure there were any at all.

Izzy @izzy_michea, who is originally from Chile and residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina was eager to come onto this podcast and not only talk about her own CPTSD, Trauma and her past work but also openly discuss about how we need to normalize discussing our own Mental Illness without the fear of negativity, anger and blame from society and those close to us. People who are Mentally Ill and physically ill in Chile are not considered people according to their current constitution and even though they're working on creating a new one the fact that so many people in Chile's past faced persecution due to their own mental health problems was wrong!

People all over the world are too afraid to talk to others about their mental health because they believe that they will not get the help and support they sorely deserve. Even in countries like the United States, UK, Canada, and other developed countries many of us don't want to talk about it because they don't think people will believe them or help them without feeling burdened. This has to change and Izzy and I discuss on this episode about that exact issue.

ok everyone, I have been waiting a long time to have a guest of this quality and ability to explain ADHD as well as anyone can!

(https://www.tamararosier.com/) Tamara Rosier, PhD, is founder of the ADHD Center of West Michigan, where she and her staff work with individuals with ADHD (and their families) to learn strategies and develop new skills to live effectively with ADHD. She has written a book "Your Brain's Not Broken"

In this episode on ADHD we discuss how emotion plays into ADHD and believe me, does it ever! Emotional regulation issues play a huge part when it comes to ADHD, how we as adults function and all the issues it creates for us.

From personal experience I can tell that I understand my ADHD way more now today after this interview with Tamara than I did before!! I am sure that you also will understand your own ADHD after listening to this episode.

I have a very difficult time regulating my emotions when my stress and anxiety levels increase and it causes a great deal of issues! Imagine having a bunch of children hanging around you, tired, cranky, upset, hungry, wanting to play, etc. Now imagine trying to have a conversation with someone with all these children with you.. You are going to have a difficult time talking to ANYONE when you are dealing with child parts, the emotions and behaviors of a child are basically the same as your child parts and they want to come online and take over and be like those same children hanging around your legs as you struggle to deal with the oncoming stress and increased anxiety you feel because of the situation you find yourself in.

If you are not capable of regulating your emotions you will surely struggle to recognize the changes that are happening within you, mentally and physically. Those who have emotional regulation issues will likely be poor when it comes to their self awareness and will fail to notice things like being triggered, experiencing a flashback and allowing your child parts to behave on your behalf instead of taking control and leaving the situation to process and return later.

I have ADHD, there's a good chance you are listening to this podcast because you too have ADHD!  Now tell me, how do you explain to someone about your ADHD, the why's the how's the what's about this disability if you have such a hard time understanding what you know about it?  learning and comprehending the information that is out there for you to learn can be extremely hard to do, especially considering our condition.  So how can you possibly succeed in explaining your ADHD to anyone if you can't figure it out for yourself?

Those with CPTSD will easily struggle when it comes to socializing in any situation that we are presented with. Weddings, Parties, fun night out, group of friends, family gatherings and so on. The stress it creates causes us to experience flashbacks to when we experienced trauma and being social or avoiding social awkwardness will be extremely difficult and often overwhelming. For many of us we just won't even bother attempting the social interactions we face because it feels so much better and safer to not go and avoid any possible shame, humiliation and fear that we believe WILL happen if we go!

Please listen to this podcast about how someone with CPTSD struggles with socializing and experiencing social awkwardness.

Procrastination involves a tendency to delay a task or decision that needs to be completed by a specific deadline. Everyone procrastinates sometimes. When faced with a task that we just don't want to do, many of us will put it off until tomorrow, setting it aside until we feel less overwhelmed with all our other responsibilities or simply waiting until we have more energy to tackle the task on a new day.

I procrastinate because I feel that I'd rather do something that doesn't feel tedious or time consuming and a lot of the times this causes me to hold off and wait, often until I really have no choice but to do it.

Exposure to complex trauma in early childhood leads to structural and functional brain changes. Structural changes alter the volume or size of specific brain regions. Proven structural changes include enlargement of the amygdala, the alarm center of the brain, and shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain area critical to remembering the story of what happened during a traumatic experience. Functional changes alter activity of certain brain regions. These include overproduction of stress hormones in childhood that can wear down the immune system and lead to depletion by adulthood of hormones necessary tolerate and recover from stressful situations encountered in daily life.

this is really important to understand, it gives us amazing insight to how our brains change due to the trauma we experience as a child and I have 2 articles that are really good examples and show us what goes on inside the brain when we experience a traumatic event.

PLUS!, there's more evidence in the articles that show that many of us who were diagnosed with ADHD are likely actually suffering from CPTSD!

Inattentive ADHD is not the type of ADHD that most people will recognize or think of when you mention the whole "ADHD" to someone.  They usually think of a child or adult who's extremely hyperactive, cannot sit still, runs around, fidgets constantly, always doing something new and fun but then finds something else within moments.  Those who are diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD are the quiet ones, those who are easily distracted, bored, lose focus, can't complete a task because we quickly lose interest. forget things we are told, and so on.

Many who have ADHD tend to create routines so that they feel confident enough to get everything that is required of them so that they do not make mistakes and avoid making other people in their life think they can be just as capable as the rest of society.  I for example have a morning routine, weeks in the making to allow me to make sure everything I need to start my day off properly does indeed get done!  Unfortunately a small change, an unexpected problem that you didn't forsee happening or just a bad start to the day can be enough to completely ruin the perfect way you like to do something!

This episode I discuss how easily our routines get thrown off and also how it can cause someone who has trauma (like myself) to become triggered and cause everything to be even more difficult.

With my special guest JD (@nottodaynetwork) www.darkdaysbrightnights.org and host of "Dark Days Bright Nights" & "Fragile Moments" Podcasts, we discuss how educating people about mental health in every aspect is so very important as it will change it for the better, allow those who suffer from a mental illness today can feel safer and better about their lives and can believe that they can find the right help they need now and not be scared to speak out about their struggles in a society that for the most part still sees mental illness in a negative light.

Everyone struggles with mental health, some more than others and many we do not know about at all. Hopefully this podcast can help!, even if its just a little but every discussion that there is about mental health is a push in the right direction!

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy, NLP's creators claim there is a connection between neurological processes (neuro-), language (linguistic) and behavioral patterns learned through experience (programming), and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.  Today, Christine who is a late diagnosed ADHD'er from Toronto Ontario Canada and Certified ADHD Coach uses this approach to help those with ADHD become more capable in their lives.

I found this to be a very interesting and exciting topic to discuss and I think you will find it very interesting to listen to as well!

Dealing with Complex Trauma like mine I have parts that I am struggling to update and gain their trust.  I am making progress but they are not always willing to listen and be updated.  I cannot be hard on them and I can't blame them or treat them with any disrespect because all that will do is create worse issues and they'll trust me even less.  I have to be patient but I also have to work harder with my processing so that this will pay off as you get closer to healing.  Listen to my podcast episode and see how stressful being blended with this child part is.

Recorded Live in Vancouver, BC. Even when you go on vacation you can still have ADHD symptoms or you can always get triggered and experience a flashback from your child parts. We need to be prepared! We need to plan out our vacation to reduce the chances of having our ADHD cause complications or having our CPTSD create potentially dangerous problems. Nobody wants to have flashback and become triggered while on a vacation but it could occur and it won’t turn out well for you. Plan ahead, do your research, learn about the place you are going. If you’re going with someone then make sure they are aware of your CPTSD.. have them help by handling some of the responsibilities and make sure they know how to help you if you have a trigger. Easiest way you can prevent or reduce the chance of a flashback is to do your work ahead of time! Process and update your parts!, show them that you’re ready for this vacation and that they can trust you to take care of everyone while away. Doing your work before you travel is truly the best way to be fully prepared for this trip and to ensure that you’ll likely have a great trip and enjoy it all! This was a great interview with a man who has years of experience with childhood trauma and has a big heart! J Bradley O. Author of the article "Break the Cycle of Negative Beliefs without Strife, Struggle, or Stress." that you can find on CPTSDfoundation.org who is an advocate in recovery for 30+ years and recently became a certified Peer Support Specialist from North Carolina.

J Discusses with me about the difficulties with Trauma, struggles to heal and break free from the cycle of negative beliefs in recovery. If we are not able to stop the negative beliefs within ourselves then it will be extremely difficult to start the healing process from our flashbacks and childhood trauma.

Like many of us with CPTSD we will have setbacks in our healing journey.  We think that we have accomplished a goal we set or feel like we have done a great deal of healing only to have much of it come crashing down on top of us and we feel frustrated, depressed, alone, dejected.  I need a safe place to go to help me recover and to help me process the trigger, the flashbacks.  I love nature! and it is a very freeing and calming place to go and allow myself to feel free.  The smells, the sounds and sites are incredible and truly there's nothing like it.    Please enjoy this episode where I discuss how nature can be very helpful for everyone who deals with trauma.

Trauma comes in all kinds and develops in many ways but a large percentage of it is Generational. For those who have suffered from Childhood abuse and neglect and experience CPTSD today, it's most likely that your father suffered from Trauma and his father and his father's father. Decades ago the recognition of trauma and abuse was pretty much non existent and 50-70 years later the amount of awareness when it comes to Trauma has increased a lot but sadly there is still such a long way to go before we have reached enough awareness to truly make giant changes in society!

It has to start from within, making the choice to stop abusing our own children but it also needs to come from areas like TV, Movies, Social Media and work environment. Please listen as Annette and I really discuss the problems that we face with Trauma and educating and increasing awareness about abuse and stopping the cycle.

People who suffer from chronic pain will often have their symptoms become more evident and occur more often if they have suffered from CPTSD and Trauma.  CPTSD does not cause chronic pain but  it certainly makes people more vulnerable to developing chronic pain. There are many studies which link chronic pain to trauma.

We know that our mind and body are connected. They can influence each other in many ways. We also know that stress and pain create a cycle, perpetuating one another. There are many ways in which stress worsens pain, including causing tense muscles and increasing inflammation. Trauma and unresolved emotional issues cause stress, so therefore contribute to the pain and stress cycle.

3 years of struggling with my CPTSD, my healing has been difficult to handle.  It affects my self confidence, my identity and it makes it very difficult for me to accept the reality of what CPTSD is to me.  My parts often are triggered and take over, I as the adult am often blended with my Child Parts and so my reality of what life is and each situation I face is not what's actually happening.  Believing my child parts skews the truth about most things in my life and I have to learn to see that reality isn't necessarily the truth.

I am learning and it takes a lot of effort, time and set backs to get there so I am sharing my struggles with you and showing all of you just how important it is to do your work and process.

On Today's episode on CPTSD I am fortunate enough to talk with founder of RE/ACT Tim Fletcher of Winnipeg, Manitoba who now resides in Windsor Ontario.

Tim Fletcher is the Founder and President of RE/ACT (Recovery Education for Addictions and Complex Trauma). He used his skills as a pastor and counsellor to develop this program to help the people he cared for overcome addiction.

During his early years, he realized that everyone has a loved one who struggles with addiction, and many people struggled with unrealized addictions and unhealthy coping techniques. He found that 97% of addicts also struggled from Complex Trauma (C-PTSD). After researching C-PTSD which was identified as, “A series of events that occur where a victim feels unsafe, and as such, develops mental disorders which inhibit them from coping in stressful or harmful circumstances”, he concluded that research was showing that there is a physical difference between the brains of those who grew up in loving and nurturing homes and those who didn’t – before any addiction became prevalent.

This was a really informative and extremely beneficial and educational opportunity for myself to learn more about CPTSD and I hope that you can learn so much more about your CPTSD as well with this episode!

No two people who have ADHD are alike, we all have different symptoms and they all affect us different.  Some have such severe ADHD that they really struggle with daily life, cannot focus, concentrate and stay still at all which makes life extremely frustrating and difficult and yet some with ADHD have it milder but still have issues but are more able to live their life and be productive, still have to take all the measures to make life easier but it's managed much easier.  ADHD is by no means an easy diagnosis to understand and deal with but everyone has their own challenges and strengths.

There's more and more evidence coming out that is starting to link some ADHD in children coming from their trauma they experienced during their childhood.  Most ADHD cases today are still linked to Genetics but there are more children and even adults who are now being diagnosed with CPTSD who have ADHD and their therapists are beginning to link their ADHD to their Childhood Trauma.

The studies are out there, I have a link showing the study and if you go look up Tim Fletcher on YouTube he has sessions where he discusses this as well.

A long time ago I started learning about CPTSD and Trauma because I have CPTSD. But then I learned that I also have ADHD and discovered how difficult and complex these two combined can be and the struggles they create together, hence the creation of my podcast. Then the thought of Autism became a reality and there were three! You can only imagine the frustration that this created for me, never truly understanding where each played a role in my life and how stressful it is on me, my relationship and work.

Then came Anxiety... my assessment with a psychiatrist for ADHD started the ever growing and obsessive thoughts of "Where does Anxiety fit in all this?" and so it grew and I started to get even more confused and frustrated until I had a long conversation with a relative about everything and she emphatically pushed Anxiety as the cause of everything. It was clear to me that anxiety is really what's holding me back from gaining ground on my Trauma and learning to handle CPTSD, ADHD and Autism! So, with the help of my doctor and the recommendation from that same psychiatrist, I started taking Anxiety medication and then a few weeks later, confirming with my Therapist that Anxiety is really what needs to be focused on...

The road to freedom, to healing has finally appeared in front of me! 4 lanes, freshly paved and straight, no traffic with amazing views but clearly marked. I am not afraid to travel on this road, even if I end up on it alone.

An exciting special guest will be coming on my podcast to be available on June 18th! Listen at the end to find out who will be on this show..

The last while has been very stressful and frustrating for myself and for my relationship and my girlfriend.  I have learned a lot about my past and my families past and came to realize that I suffer from a lot of Anxiety!  Likely dealing with Highly Functioning Anxiety along with my ADHD, my Autism and my CPTSD.  Been on Anxiety medication for two weeks now to help me deal with all the anxious feelings that I have been experiencing for such a long time but it's made things more complicated and confusing for everyone in my life.

Learned that the Trauma I have and the abuse I suffered is multi generational, I am not the first to deal with it and I am determined to make it myself the last.  Life is difficult, relationship nearly ended a few times and trying to gain control has not been easy!  Reality here is that I have a lot of hard, difficult work ahead for myself if I want things to get better.

What motivates you?  How do you stay motivated knowing you have ADHD?

We all realize that we are highly motivated when there's something knew and exciting in our lives for the first time but then we also notice how after a while that feeling we had is waning or even gone completely.  Why?  because our brains get used to the Dopamine affect that we are fed when it's new and fun and we haven't done it before and now the effect is gone and we need to get it back!  Need to find new ways to maintain that motivation and desire!

Recently I had a discussion with a relative about my Trauma and ADHD and I learned a lot that I found to be incredibly helpful to understand where my Trauma comes from and also learned that I suffer from way more Anxiety than I initially thought.  I had recently started taking an Anxiety Medication to help with this and began to really understand how the Anxiety fits in with my CPTSD.  I do have Anxiety as an adult!  Yes my parts are there and they do play a role with this entire complicated situation and the anxiety can cause me to become triggered but I know I have felt anxiety as the adult because the thoughts and feelings that I experience do not have child like thoughts or feelings.   I am still working on it but It appears that if I can get a better understanding and learn to handle the anxiety better that this will really help with the healing process for my CPTSD.

In the 2nd of four episodes on the 4 step process with a part I do a quick check in with the part before I move forward and tell the Part that he's an amazing, special part that was brave and incredible, thanking him for all that he did to protect me when I was in danger.  I wanted to let him know that he has every right to feel anxious when a trigger happens and that he has done an amazing job trying to protect me.

I also asked my Anxiety part if he felt that he believed he was able to trust me?  did I gain his trust enough that I could update him to today?  did I?

big news coming too!

Instead of doing an ADHD episode today I am going to perform to my audience in real time a 4 Step Process with a Part. this will be four 30 minute episodes over 2 weeks where I will go through all 4 steps (hopefully) with you the audience as I do some healing from trauma

the 4 steps are:

  1. Listening to your Part - identify your part, learn why they came to be and why they are protecting you. When were they born? what is the part's name? Gender? Show this part Kindness and compassion and love. give them what they never received back then, show them that you are ok now!

  2. Feel the Part's Emotions - sit with your part (unblended) and feel the emotions that this part felt when it was trying to protect you, allow yourself to feel what he or she felt back then. Experience the raw feelings so you can understand and empathize with this part later on.

  3. Acknowledge and Appreciation - You need to thank your part, acknowledge that what it was doing for you was good! that he/she was trying to protect you from what it saw and believed was dangerous for you when you were that child! Show this part that you are thankful that they were created so that you could survive and be here today. Show this part that you have loved and appreciated him/her all the time and that he/she's an incredible and beautiful part.

  4. Update your Part - after all 3 steps and if you know that your part trusts you and sees that you are now capable of taking care of yourself you can update this part! show them the present! Tell them what day/year it is, who you are, how old you are now. Show them that they have done the best job they could have ever possibly done for you and that they were amazing and brave and deserve so much better! Tell them that you are safe now, show them that they no longer need to protect you when trouble arises and you feel a trigger. Thank them for what they have done and show them love and care.

This Episode focuses primarily on Step one and Step two, although I will likely quickly revisit Step two before moving forward. each episode will be roughly 30 mins long.

What is Toxic Family Dynamics? Toxic Family Dynamics come in various forms and can damage a child’s development in visible and invisible ways. Some of the toxic family dynamics that sensitive/ intense children can get locked into include: Having depressed or emotionally blank parents, having controlling parents, enmeshment, having to step up as ‘little adults’, having to face parents’ envy, and being scapegoated as the black sheep.

I feel this is very important to discuss because the creation of trauma is complex and hard to discover due to the varied ways it comes from, so I highly recommend listening to this episode.

The older you get, the more shame you are apt to feel if your ADHD is undiagnosed.  Perhaps, you feel ashamed of what a mess your pocketbook always is in.  Or you feel ashamed of how late you usually are, no matter how hard you try not to be.  And, you feel ashamed that you haven’t made more of the abilities you were born with.

The shame may penetrate to deeper levels.  You may feel ashamed of your thoughts, desires, and predilections. Likewise, you may feel the only way you can be accepted is by putting on a mask. In addition, you may feel that the real you is fundamentally flawed.

I know I feel shame all the time mostly because of my lack of impulse control and it's difficult to get out of my shame cycle when it starts but it is getting better, never easy when it happens.

A trauma response is the reflexive use of over-adaptive coping mechanisms in the real or perceived presence of a trauma event.  The four trauma responses most commonly recognized are fight, flight, freeze, fawn, called the 4 Fs of trauma.

When we experience something traumatic or have been exposed to prolonged stress, it causes part of our brain, the amygdala, to go into hyperdrive where we see and feel threats in nonthreatening situations, this causes us to act in ways that we don't understand and can leave us feeling like we no longer have control over ourselves. The [trauma] response is often based on what your brain thinks will help you survive the current situation.

Please listen my episode on the 4Fs of Trauma as I also discuss which ones I typically fall into (Freeze and Fawn)

I was recently assessed earlier this week by a local Psychiatrist in the Edmonton area and just over an hour later she diagnosed me with Inattentive ADHD, which was a big relief and made me quite happy to finally have this done.  In this episode I discuss the details of the assessment, the questions she asked and the stuff I told her about my history and dealing with the issues that ADHD has presented to me throughout most of my life.

I also give a quick run down of what Inattentive ADHD is at the end.

Many who suffer from devastating CPTSD often choose self isolation rather than risk their safety in the world and re-experience the horrible trauma from their past.  Doesn't matter if it is in their work environment, new relationships or just being out in public with a group or friends or strangers they often feel unsafe because they cannot trust those they are with and do not want to trigger any flashbacks, so it's simply easier to stay home and isolate themselves from any dangers, real or not.  It's important for someone who uses self isolation as a method of soothing their pain and suffering to get the help they need in order to have any chance to live happy and healthy.

Seeing a therapist and getting the proper help, like Structural Dissociation theory will no doubt help a person with CPTSD begin to heal from their pain and suffering.  I will be hard work and you will experience set backs but this will ultimately give you the power and strength to again feel freedom from your trauma and learn to live your life without fear.

Children are readily diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) due to sleeping troubles, careless mistakes, fidgeting, or forgetfulness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source cites ADHD as the most commonly diagnosed neurobehavioral condition in children under 18.  However, many medical conditions in children can mirror ADHD symptoms, which can make getting a correct diagnosis difficult.  Rather than jump to conclusions, it’s important to consider alternative explanations to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

My own complicated situation with wondering if it's ADHD or Autism? or if CPTSD plays a role as well? could it be an Anxiety disorder?

Please come and listen to me describe all the possible other disabilities or things that it just might be instead of ADHD.

"Window of Tolerance" a term coined by Dr. Dan Siegel is now commonly used to understand and describe  normal brain/body reactions, especially following adversity. The concept suggests that we have an optimal arousal level when we are within the window of tolerance that allows for the ebb and flow (ups and downs of emotions) experienced by human beings. We may experience hurt, anxiety, pain, anger that brings us close to the edges of the window of tolerance but generally we are able to utilize strategies to keep us within this window. Similarly we may feel too exhausted, sad, or shut down but we generally shift out of this.

I have struggled off and on to manage my ADHD along with my life successfully because learning how to do it has always been hard.  Plus having CPTSD and Autism does not help at all and it makes things even more complicated.  Getting my life under control is clearly the key but I have to learn how to use the changes I've noticed to my advantage and change the things in my life that happen so it becomes easier.

It is not easy but it can be done, you are the only one who can determine whether or not you achieve the change and can maintain it!  takes strength, reinforcement and being responsible, taking ownership of your daily actions.  But it can be done!

There are a lot of people in the world who suffer from CPTSD but there are also many of us who knowingly or unknowingly are on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Autistic.  Doesn't really matter if you are high functional (aka Asperger's) or more on the lower end and are in constant need of support.

I developed CPTSD from an early age and then as a teenager due to bullying, teasing and events that I found to be overwhelming because of my Autism and I never really knew where it really came from.  It's quite complex really, (no pun intended) and few people out there in the Neurotypical world know that so many people who have CPTSD are likely autistic and experience their triggers and flashbacks more intensely and have a much harder time healing from their trauma.

Please listen to this episode and I hope you can gain some understanding for yourself or for someone else.

Everyone gets distracted!  fact of life, very few people are able to stay focused 100% and never have their minds wander.  But those who have ADHD find that they can be distracted multiple times by multiple things out there all around them and it takes literally nothing for it to occur.  We struggle because our minds can't focus enough on what we are looking at, working on, listening to and end up becoming involved in many things over the course of a day.

I really think we are trying to find that next dopamine hit and that's what can cause us to be distracted!  No, this isn't always why but i'm sure it often can be the explanation when we become bored easily with what we are doing in the moment.. especially those with ADHD!

This theory, Structural Dissociation Theory in my opinion has the ability to be the most helpful and successful way of helping those who suffer from CPTSD and have multiple flashbacks and have child parts. Our brain has parts that develop personalities that are Child Parts who interact with Adult Parts when they become triggered due to a flashback from trauma we have experienced in our childhood or even adult years. The goal of this theory is to reconnect these parts with our adult, build a relationship with them and give them the ability to learn to trust again and allow us to heal and eventually no longer experience flashbacks to our trauma.

if there was any episode of my podcasts you need to listen to this will be the one. I believe that this Model of therapy can be the most effective for a large majority of adults who suffer from CPTSD! The only issue is that because it is so new to the world of Psychology that not many therapists today use it for their clients. I recommend you do your research, find the right Therapist for you who does Structural Dissociation Theory as their therapy... many do remote connection therapy these days so you can find one if you look hard enough. Also and I want to point this out, there are forms of therapy that can do way more damage than good to someone who suffers from CPTSD. CBT therapy and other forms of therapy can create harm to child parts, trying to convince a part that they are bad, wrong, etc is never the way to go when it comes to healing as this only causes the part to trust you even less than it already does to begin with.

ADHD masking is a way of hiding symptoms through learned behaviors that can be healthy or unhealthy. Many people with ADHD break social rules through their behaviors and may face shame and ridicule. As a result, they develop coping strategies to hide parts of themselves.  ADHD masking can be used as a coping mechanism and sometimes may help people get by when they are young and trying to make sense of the world around them.  But eventually, this behavior becomes difficult to manage on its own.

It seems like we all use music to help improve our ability to concentrate and focus on what we are doing in the moment, to complete our tasks.   I used focus to help me sleep, listening to old 1930's 40's 50's radio programs every night.  Music seems to help me when it comes to improving my senses, increases my sense of awareness and makes me feel more confident, powerful, happy.

Many of us out there love to listen to all types of music to help them with their work, school, chores or just to feel good about themselves, a shot adrenaline or motivation.

This episode is one that I have been looking to do for a very long time!  discuss ADHD from a Woman's side.  But I needed to have someone who could talk about ADHD who isn't me!  Jo is from Manchester England and I get to talk about her ADHD, her diagnosis, the struggles she faces not only as a woman but living in the UK as well where if you want to get assessed for ADHD it can take 18 months to get there!

We really talk about all the problems people have when it comes to their mental health and what needs to change in order for those who have ADHD and even the ones who will need to be diagnosed in our future!  I hope you truly enjoy this 1 on 1 conversation about being a woman with ADHD and please share this with those you know!

Dysregulation refers to the inability to regulate your brain function and nervous system, which has physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. With CPTSD, our history of trauma can leave our nervous system always engaged in fight or flight, and we become extra sensitive to stress and other triggers.

For CPTSD survivors, dysregulation is generally caused by a trigger. This can be a seemingly ordinary or mild event, but it triggers an unconscious flashback to the feelings of a past traumatic or emotionally upsetting experience.

Sadly there’s an enormous amount of unfounded judgement, criticism and misinformation in the community around ADHD and stimulant medication, which adds to the stigma kids with ADHD and their parents experience.

Unfortunately this stigma (or mark of disgrace) can have severe, if not dire consequences, on the outcomes of kids with ADHD.

CPTSD can be and is at time's a #$@# Nightmare!  You feel like you are making a ton of progress then the doors fly open beneath your feet, falling on your ass and you're right back at square one.  Trauma is terrifying and causes so much grief for those who love you but more so causes grief for yourself!  Today I felt like I wanted to tell the entire world where to stick their "Mental Health" support!  This world truly needs to step up and give those with Mental Health issues a lot more!  Not everyone can afford to get the help they deserve and need yet those out there who help us are more interested in making the dollar than truly helping us get better!

Well I've got news for them.. there's many more where we came from!  it's truly time for society to step up and give Mental health the attention it deserves because if not there'll be way more than they'll know what do with and it's never going to go away quietly!

Hypervigilance and trauma create some of the most troubling life problems. Sleeplessness. Worry. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop. For the longest time that you can remember, you’ve always felt on edge. You always are looking for something that could go wrong. The constant scanning of hypervigilance you feel keeps you from ever completely relaxing.

So you keep up your guard, no matter the situation. Whether you are at the grocery store shopping or even at home watching TV, your defenses are always on. Loud noises startle you easily, and you have a tendency to get defensive quickly when talking to other people.

Why is this happening?

You are experiencing hypervigilance, which is likely a result of having endured some form of trauma and dealing with complex post-traumatic stress disorder

When someone with ADHD feels stress it is more intense and it also occurs more often and at a faster rate than for those who are neurotypical.  Our life is much harder to do when we are stressed, makes our symptoms more apparent and will make us less reliable.  Stress is not healthy for anyone and it will cause health issues if not properly dealt with so imagine what that means for someone who has ADHD and often has stress.

Listen to this podcast and I talk about stress with ADHD as well as some tips to help us when we are feeling stress.

BRAIN FOG - you know, that feeling that you have cobwebs in your brain; where it is hard to think clearly. You feel like you are walking around in a fog and it takes you a while to process what is going on around you. You might find it difficult to concentrate, but not because you are distracted - it is more because your thoughts simply won’t come together. You might feel like you are moving inside a dream. When you are forced to concentrate, you find it exhausting. Some people describe it simply as a “fuzzy” brain.

I also discuss ways that you can try to overcome this problem and what to change in your lifestyle that will help you.

With codependency, the need to support others goes beyond what’s generally considered healthy.

If you behave in codependent ways, you don’t just offer support temporarily, such as when a loved one faces a setback. Instead, you tend to focus on caretaking and caring for others to the point that you begin to define yourself in relation to their needs.  Some level of dependency is healthy in relationships. It may be tough to make it through life alone, and most people thrive with companionship and social support.

Please listen to my episode and see how a codependent partner is unhealthy for any relationship in life.

Medication can help reduce symptoms of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity in children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  However, medications come with side effects and risks—and they’re not the only treatment option. Whether you’re the parent or the patient, it’s important to learn the facts about ADHD medication so you can make an informed decision about what’s best.

Medication doesn’t cure ADHD. It can relieve symptoms while it’s being taken, but once medication stops, those symptoms come back. Also, ADHD medication helps some more than others. Some people experience dramatic improvement while others experience only modest gains.

Please listen to this episode (my 40th) as I discuss all the different types of medication and what it can do, also I discuss my personal experiences with how I started on medication, my side effects and how I got to where I am today.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)is a diagnosis that applies to some people who are excessively aggressive, angry, or defiant. Though it’s most commonly diagnosed in children, adults can have ODD. Oppositional defiant behavior goes beyond what is developmentally normal or a clear reaction to challenging circumstances. For example, neither a toddler throwing tantrums nor a teenager reacting with anger to abuse warrant a diagnosis of ODD.

ODD can feel overwhelming. Kids and teens may feel out of control and angry. This can affect their relationships with peers and family, and undermine their ability to succeed at school. ODD often affects an entire family. Parents may feel frustrated, angry, and anxious. Siblings may be afraid of another child with ODD. It’s common for families to disagree about how to manage ODD. Spouses may find themselves frequently fighting about the child.

Listen to my episode where I talk about ODD and share my experiences with this lesser known disability.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) are both mental health disorders that can develop after you go through a traumatic event, like witnessing violence or being sexually assaulted.

There are several important distinctions, however, in how the conditions develop and the best ways to treat them. Here is what you need to know about the difference between CPTSD and PTSD.

Also I discuss the Hypnotherapy session I had last week and briefly talk about what it is.

A common symptom of someone who has ADHD is Poor/Low or No impulse control.  They often make choices in their life before they realize what consequence the choice will have on their life and possibly who they are with.  You will say something to someone that you later will regret or won't make any sense because you weren't able to think about what was coming out of your mouth before you said it.

The dangers that come from Lack of Impulse Control are vast and serious!, you could get into trouble with the law, become deep in debt or maybe even kill yourself or even someone you love dearly because of the choice you make without the ability to think/reflect on that choice.

CPTSD triggers happen because we do not feel safe, trauma happened in the past where we were not in a safe place and danger occurred.  In order to feel safe our parts become activated and blended with the adult in order to attempt to be safe when we are in danger.

It is very important for someone who has CPTSD to feel safe wherever they are!  whether it is with a person in their lives or a location, if they do not feel safe they will experience flashbacks will have a desire to return to a state of safety and security.  Often the feeling of safety can lead to isolation so we need to find ways to feel safe when we are out in the world.

I don't really trust anyone 100%  implicit trust isn't something I believe I know or have.  There are obvious reasons for this, Child Parts, Trauma, etc.  You can learn to trust again with a lot of hard work with yourself and showing your parts that they too can trust the adult to do what is best for themself.   By doing the 4 step process, hopefully gaining the trust of your child parts you can begin to fully trust people again but first... trusting yourself needs to occur before you can possibly trust anyone else in your life.

Listen to my podcast about Dopamine on the ADHD brain,

There are many reasons one should become enlightened to the polyvagal theory, least of which is to understand why those bothersome behaviors such as hypervigilance are there and how to deal with them.

Another reason to learn more is that it is horrible to be a mystery to oneself reacting to danger that is not there as though one is back in situations that happened decades in the past.

The polyvagal theory also explains why people who were victimized as children freeze when confronted with a sexual predator such as a rapist or other abuser today. It isn’t because they don’t want to scream or run, their brain has shut down and they cannot.  Please listen to this episode and hopefully you will have a much better understand of CPTSD from it.

When you are experiencing a flashback of a traumatic event, often it can be too much to handle in the moment, overwhelming you to the point where your mind dissociates.  You feel numb, perhaps and out of body experience, zoned out and not being aware of anything going on around you and it can be potentially dangerous for you and others.  Often those who suffer from CPTSD will dissociate from reality in order to attempt to gain relief from the pain and trauma of your past and I will discuss what Dissociation is, why it happens and how you or your loved ones can help you when it occurs.

When you are dealing with CPTSD in your life you are taught by a Therapist to use Grounding Tools to assist you to unblend from your child parts that have become triggered by a flashback.  I cannot emphasize how important the use of Grounding is to your healing process!  Without the ability to ground when your parts feel triggered you will find that it is incredibly difficult to come out of your trigger and begin to heal your pain and suffering.

I offer my own experiences to you the audience and provide some new and interesting examples of the tools out there people have come up with to help them ground and unblend from their part's triggers.

Being diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for many is not an easy thing to accept.  We don't really believe that it's something that would happen to us and we look for other explanations and pretend to ourselves that we don't really have it.  But ultimately in order to begin the process of healing and moving forward in life we need to accept our condition and stay positive about our experiences throughout the stages of therapy and learning about this terrible disability that we have.  I talk about my own issues with accepting my diagnosis in this episode and give advice to my listeners in this episode.

Being blended with your child parts is a very difficult thing to recognize and even more difficult to acknowledge and accept. When you are blended the adult believes that he/she is the child and he/she believes what the child has to say and this can cause damage in your life, to your relationships and even to your career!
