Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer recently announced his plans to retire, and President Biden announced his plans to replace the Justice with a black woman. While I don’t have anything against a black woman filling the position, I do have a problem with our tendency to choose nominees based on anything other than qualifications.
Today, I talk about why we need to hire based on qualifications. I explain why, rather than empowering women and people of color, hiring by identity degrades and insults them.
“It sets all of us women back when white males make a statement about gender and race. It’s like we’re not competent to serve without bringing that up first.”
