In today’s text, Paul says Jesus came as ‘a servant to the circumcised’ (v8), which is a clear and unambiguous reference to the Jews. He says it is for two reasons:

1. Firstly, (v8) to show ‘God’s truthfulness’ and to confirm the ‘promises to the patriarchs’.
2. Secondly, (v9) to trigger the worship of the Gentiles (this is expanded in v10–12). Paul also says what the Gentiles worship God for: ‘his mercy’.
