102: How Forgiving Yourself Could Be Holding You Back

I don’t like messing up or making the wrong decision. I can sometimes be hard on myself. I’ve learned to forgive myself and show myself grace. That sounds good, sounds like growth, but it’s really quite problematic.

All that forgiveness and grace was holding me back and keeping me from growing my business and I’ll tell you why.

  1. Forgiveness implies you’ve done something “bad”, something wrong. It makes you feel bad. The truth is though, forgiveness is only appropriate for sin, wronging another person or harming someone in some way.
  2. Good people, purpose-driven, faith-filled women like you and me want to avoid doing “bad” things and therefore avoid making decisions where we aren’t certain of the outcome.
  3. Mistakes aren’t “bad” though unless they result in someone being wronged or harmed in some way.

In her book “Think Great, Be Great” Lailah Gifty Akita says “ Mistakes are experiences. Without these experiences, there is no learning.”

I couldn’t agree with her more!

Avoiding mistakes does not make you more successful. It actually ensures the opposite. When you avoid mistakes you do less and therefore learn nothing. I’m not suggesting reckless behavior, just doing the best with what you have and learning from anything that falls short of what you expected.

What can you do to get out of this way of thinking?

  • Change your mindset. Stop playing “not to lose” and start playing to win in your business, accept there are risks.
  • Change how you talk about the things that don’t pan out. Talk more about the lessons than the mistake itself
  • Change what you do. Take some time to process the lesson, then adjust your strategy accordingly
