Ganesh travelled from Singapore to Canada without flights. Armed with just a phone, a 60-litre backpack and a mettlesome “can do” attitude, 20-year-old me hitchhiked and took numerous forms of public transport from Singapore to Germany before sailing across the Atlantic on a freighter ship to North America. Along the way, I toured North Korea, endured crowded train rides during China’s Lunar New Year rush, camped on an abandoned section of the Great Wall near Beijing one night in the dead of winter, dealt with state security in China’s Xinjiang province and repressive Turkmenistan, visited Silk Road cities in Central Asia, relied on the kindness of strangers across the ‘stans, Iran, Turkey and Europe, who kindly welcomed me to their home and fed me, and literally hitchhiked across half the world – amongst many other things.
