"should" is a judgment that was learned and then, internalized.

in this episode, i talk about how choosing to leave my corporate job, to remain single and not get married in my 20's, and to travel alone as a woman were all invitations for others to "should" all over me.

but where does that shoulding even come from?

most of the shoulding that happens from others comes from internalized capitalism, internalized misogyny & homophobia, and an internalized stigma around "being single" stemming from the historically oppressive institution of marriage. fun stuff! i talk about why that is, the history, and how to understand it so it's easy to spot and even easier to dismiss as what it is, which is, basically, other people's internalized judgments.
