In this episode of On the Same Page, Seamus and Blake discuss Maggie O’Farrell’s novel “Hamnet”, an example of historical fiction as imaginative as it is heart-breaking. Without so much as breathing his name, O’Farrell invites us into plague-ridden Elizabethan world of Shakespeare’s home life, breathing life into the oft undervalued Agnes (Anne Hathaway) and their oft overlooked son Hamnet. It would be challenge enough to write a novel in which the presence of Shakespeare is felt without that presence taking centre stage, but in “Hamnet” O’Farrell manages to turn the tables on great artistry by rendering The Bard as mere backdrop to the tale of marriage and grief which inspired him.
