Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpiece “Frankenstein” is a story about a grief-stricken man who decides to play God, a modern Prometheus, and his creation, a modern Adam. Untiring as the creature that comes to life in its pages, “Frankenstein” remains one of the world’s most enduring novels because it cuts to the core of the only division there is, that between life and death. Shelley’s story, as much an example of the sublime as it is science-fiction or the Romantic mythology of the self, tears at the stitching of that divide from which all the dangers of mortality spring: knowledge and ignorance, good and evil, creation and destruction, love and fear, feelings and intellect, in short, monstrous humanity and monsters all too human.
